Aflatoxin Formation On Selected Human Foods By Strains Of Aspergillus Flavus, Link, And Penicillium Rubrum, Stroll, Ronald Arlyn Sonstegard Feb 1966

Aflatoxin Formation On Selected Human Foods By Strains Of Aspergillus Flavus, Link, And Penicillium Rubrum, Stroll, Ronald Arlyn Sonstegard

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The occasional contamination of foods by biologically active compounds arising from metabolic processes of mold contamination represents a situation which has probably existed since prehistoric times. This is due in part to the ubiquitous distribution of fungi and the frequent opportunity for their growth during the harvest and subsequent storage of foods, and the recognized capabilities of these organisms to produce complex molecules. Within the last decade an increasing body of knowledge has become available concerning the effects of carious deleterious biological metabolites on the health of animals and man. Increased sophistication of methods and approaches to biological problems and …

Ground Water Quality Variation At A Refuse Landfill, Richard Jay Sawinski Feb 1966

Ground Water Quality Variation At A Refuse Landfill, Richard Jay Sawinski

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Upon relocation of the Brookings sanitary landfill several years ago, local landowners exhibited concern that the quality of their ground water supplies might possibly be deteriorated by such a waste disposal operation. The site was an inactive gravel pit area, with many excavations extending into the shallow water table. Late in 1964, with the support of the City and State Health Department officials, the Civil Engineering Department of South Dakota State University undertook a comprehensive research project to determine the possible effects of refuse disposal on ground water quality at the landfill site. The initial work conducted by James H. …

Chemical Variation Of Ground Water Quality In The Vicinity Of A Refuse Landfill, James Henry Mccormick Jan 1966

Chemical Variation Of Ground Water Quality In The Vicinity Of A Refuse Landfill, James Henry Mccormick

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Research on the effect of buried refuse on ground water quality provides information so that adequate safeguards can be established in such operation, while at the same time allowing maximum use of these disposal sites. Today, with over 1400 communities disposing of their refuse by sanitary landfill techniques (1-104), and many thousands more disposing of this material in open dumps on land without the degree of sanitary control recommended by health agencies, a potential danger to ground water aquifers exists. What is the magnitude of this danger, and what concern should be given it, is the basic attitude under which …

A Procedure For Planning Production And Determination Of Inventory, Syed Khaja Kaleemuddin Jan 1966

A Procedure For Planning Production And Determination Of Inventory, Syed Khaja Kaleemuddin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

At one time excess inventories were considered advantageous, but today they are regarded as the major cause of business failures. Most often, inventories deal the severest blow to the new entrepreneur because he cannot afford to have capital tied up in inventory during a seasonal slump. One of the factors that has aggravated the problem of inventories has been the trend towards product diversification in the past 25 years. Management of inventories is recognized today as one of the key responsibilities in achieving continuous and economical plant operation. Inventory dollars are no longer regarded as a drain on working capital; …

A Study And Analysis Of The Stochastic Model And Assumptions Used In Pert, Leon Burnell Ellwein Jan 1966

A Study And Analysis Of The Stochastic Model And Assumptions Used In Pert, Leon Burnell Ellwein

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In recent years we have seen significant advances in technology. The present period has often been called the Age of Massive Engineering by many authorities. This high rate of advancement has been initiated and supported by the space race as well as the demands of industry. New technologies provide the backbone for new and complex development projects which in turn end up as management’s responsibility for administration. The importance of time and efficiency in controlling a project is at the top of management’s list. Many times the success of a project depends as much on the time of completion as …

Motor Proficiency Of Mentally Retarded Children, Carol H. Doorn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This paper is an attempt to correlate intelligence and motor proficiency and to determine if remedial physical education will improve motor proficiency significantly. The Oseretsky Tests of Motor Proficiency were used by the author in a test-retest situation during a six month program of remedial physical education. This paper discusses the mentally retarded students who were incapable, because of their limited capacities, of adequately to their environment. Society is becoming more aware of their responsibility in providing adequate programs for the treatment and care of the mentally retarded. According to the United States Department of Health, Education and Welfare, 126,000 …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effect of selected explosive weight training exercises upon leg strength, free running speed, and explosive power. Twenty freshman male volunteer students at South Dakota State University were chosen from the investigator’s two activity classes by a table of random number to become subjects in the experimental group. The control group was a trampoline and handball activity class consisting of twenty freshmen male students at South Dakota State University. The subjects in the experimental group participated in a five-week explosive weight training program, during which they met for twenty training sessions; each …

Cytogenetics, Breeding Behavior And Tumor Formation In Progeny Of A Homozygous Triploid Sorgham, Peck Sun Lin Jan 1966

Cytogenetics, Breeding Behavior And Tumor Formation In Progeny Of A Homozygous Triploid Sorgham, Peck Sun Lin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Univalents were studied in the microsporocytes of a triploid sorghum plant which was derived from a selfed haploid. At metaphase I, the frequencies of univalent varied with cell maturity which was judged by anther development. The developmental stages of anthers were E, M, L, VL, and VVL for early, medium, late, very late, and very, very late respectively. Univalents averaged 2.3 per cell at the earliest (E) stage increased to 3.9 per cell at the latest (VVL) stage. A similar tendency was found from L to VVL at anaphase I and telophase I. Trivalents were also studied in cell populations …

Limnology Of Three Farm Ponds In South-Central South Dakota, Larry Kim Graham Jan 1966

Limnology Of Three Farm Ponds In South-Central South Dakota, Larry Kim Graham

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Physical, chemical, and biological aspects of three farm ponds in south-central South Dakota were studied from June 1964 until December 1965. Maximum water temperature at the surface reached 25.2 C, while water temperatures at the bottom of the ponds were about 2 to 4C lower than the surface. Light transmission was influenced by turbidity but generally penetrated to the bottom of the ponds except during periods of cloudy ice and snow cover. Dissolved oxygen was near saturation during periods of open water. Most chemical ions in the ponds increased annually from a winter minimum to a spring maximum. Total dissolved …

Factors Influencing Anaerobic Pond Treatment Of Meat Packing Waste, Tracy James Tofflemire Jan 1966

Factors Influencing Anaerobic Pond Treatment Of Meat Packing Waste, Tracy James Tofflemire

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The objectives if the research were threefold: 1. To determine the effect of increased kill and loading on an anaerobic pond system treating meat packing wastes. 2. To determine the effect of recirculation in an anaerobic pond system treating meat packing wastes. 3. To determine the insulating effect of a meat waste grease-scum. The extent of the research was limited to the anaerobic system.
Samples and records were taken at the MID Packing Company from November 1965 through March 1966. During the first period of sampling, data were collected which made possible an evaluation of the effect of higher kill. …
