Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The effectiveness of athletic performance in sports is centered to a great degree upon the muscular strength and the power of participants. Physical educators and coaches, recognizing that efficient and effective athletic performance hinge upon good muscular strength and power, are concerned with the development and maintenance of such qualities in their athletes. However, the extent to which muscular strength and power can be improved depends upon a number of factors among which is the body type of the athlete. Could a physical educator or coach expect an individual with a slight or heavy body build to improve in muscular …

A Clinico-Pathologic Study Of Botulism In Ring-Necked Pheasants, Hazel J. Shave

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Toxins were produced from 6 strains of Cl. Botulinum, 2 of which killed pheasants. Inoculated birds were observed and a description of the progression of signs of the disease is given. Juvenile pheasants were inoculated with Types A and C toxin intramuscularly and were given the toxin orally. These birds were observed and their clinical signs noted. Adult pheasants were inoculated with toxoid prepared from type C toxin and commercial toxoid; injections were repeated in 21 days. Fourteen days following the final injection, the birds were challenged with toxin. Those protected with toxoid survived, while those receiving saline succumbed. Gross …

Responses Of Rumen Microflora To Whey Products Added To High-Grain Low-Roughage Rations, Virgil L. Metzger Jan 1971

Responses Of Rumen Microflora To Whey Products Added To High-Grain Low-Roughage Rations, Virgil L. Metzger

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many factors present in livestock feeds affect the numbers and types of protozoa and bacteria in the rumen. A small particle size of feed and a fast rate of passage of the feed through the ruminant decreases protozoal numbers. Full feeding of a concentrate ration and an acid pH in the rumen also tend to reduce protozoa numbers. Bacteria numbers tend to increase as the protozoa numbers decrease. Knowledge of rumen microflora population changes on different rations is lacking. It is known that restricted-roughage rations will generally cause lower protozoal numbers. Since whey is an available source of lactose and …

Arboviruses In South Dakota Mosquitoes And Their Pathogenicity To Pheasants, Duane Robert Larson Jan 1971

Arboviruses In South Dakota Mosquitoes And Their Pathogenicity To Pheasants, Duane Robert Larson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The extent of arthropod-borne virus activity in humans and domestic and wild vertebrates in South Dakota is not known. The World Health Organization (88) defines an arbovirus as follows: "an arbovirus must produce a viremic in one or more vertebrate species, multiply in some arthropod that feeds on viremic blood and be transmitted through feeding." Mosquitoes or other arthropods fill these requirements because female mosquitoes take blood as a requisite to egg maturation. Blood from any vertebrate host contains the essential nutrients for ovarian maturation (65). Not all mosquitoes prefer blood from the same host so a wide variety of …

Adjustment Of Rural And Urban Residents In Five Retirement Homes In Northeastern Wisconsin, Grace E. Kiefert Jan 1971

Adjustment Of Rural And Urban Residents In Five Retirement Homes In Northeastern Wisconsin, Grace E. Kiefert

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The need for this study is indicated by gaps in gerontological research and information. Until the last twenty years, studies were not often made of the many aspects of the aged in society; and currently, many questions in this field remain unanswered. Some studies have dealt with the physical setting of the retirement homes, but the individual's perception of the home has not been studied. The actual physical conditions of the homes are inconsequential to this study because the residents' perception of the situation· is critical to adjustment. This will provide the focus for this study. The objectives of this study …

Evaluation Of Orally Administered Sodium D-Thyroxine As A Teratogen In New Zealand White Rabbits, Gary A. Thibodeau

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Sodium D-thyroxine was evaluated for possible embryotoxic and/or teratogenic effects following oral administration in New Zealand White rabbits. All animals utilized were alert, active and apparently disease-free virgin does weighing three and one-half to four kilograms. Rabbits were individually housed in stainless steel batteries and maintained on a commercially available palletized diet and mineral supplement. Feed and water were provided ad libitum in animal quarters air conditioned to minimize environmental temperature fluctuations. Following a 14-day post-delivery observation period does were bred to New Zealand White bucks and randomly allocated to one of two experimental groups or the control group each …

Effects Of Various Levels Of Dietary Selenium And Arsenic On Chickens, Richard L. Arnold Jan 1971

Effects Of Various Levels Of Dietary Selenium And Arsenic On Chickens, Richard L. Arnold

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Various levels of selenium and arsenic additions were made to several types of chicken diets to study their effects on growth and reproduction criteria. Three experiments were conducted. The first study involved day-old chicks and terminated at 64 weeks of age. These yearling hens were then used for the second experiments which terminated when the hens were 104 weeks old. The third study was initiated with 20 week old pullets and terminated when they were 52 weeks old. Feeding purified diets resulted in slower chick growth and lower mature body weights of hens. Selenium additions of 2.0 ppm resulted in …

Selected Determinants Of The Hiring Policy Of Employers Relative To Businesses In Five Counties Of South Dakota, Don Martin

Description of the Problem For nearly everyone in our society, remunerative work has provided a meaningful role. It also provided an avenue for the attainment of respect, dignity, and the essentials of the "good life." On the other hand, unemployment has necessitated reliance on programs for the indigent and unemployed. The central focus of this study was the Janus-headed problem of unemployment and underemployment. The approach was oriented to a level of organization which has not previously been adequately explored. Unlike most of the studies which have attempted to meliorate the exigencies of unemployment, this study focused on the needs …

Effects Of Selected Music Environments On Performance Of An Endurance Event, Carol Evonne Mccormick

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present study was conducted to objectively investigate the effects of music upon human performance during an endurance event. If a regulation of human performance can be established, music could be an invaluable aid for use during physical activity. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of different types of music upon performance of an endurance event. The following two hypotheses were investigated:

1. There is no significant difference among the five treatments on distance performance of an endurance event.

2. There is no significant difference among the five treatments on heart rate before and during an …

The Relationship Of Forward Pass Catching Ability In Football And Selected Anatomical Measurements And Motor Responses, Marlin Peter Vis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

American football has undergone many significant changes since its first recorded game between Rutgers and Princeton in 1869. Once change has been the growth in the importance of the forward pass to the offense. Rockne cites the year 1912 as a turning point of the growth in popularity of football. It was during this year that the Rules Committee removed many of the restrictions against the forward pass and made more definite the penalties against interfering with the receiver. Rockne states that this increase in the popularity of football is due “entirely to the open game, to the increase of …

Six-to 8-months-old Hereford heifers categorized as grubby or grub-free calves were used for this research. Forty calves were purchased in 1968 and also in 1969. The grubby calves were obtained from Highmore, South Dakota, an area where calves have a history of heavy grub infestations of both Hypoderma bovis (L.) and Hypoderma lineatum (de Villers). The grub-free calves were purchased in Fargo, North Dakota. Calves raised in this area seldom are infested with cattle grubs. Specified groups of calves were subjected to 30 minutes of continuous exercise or the withholding of feed and water for 24 hours prior to treatment …
