Attitudes, Knowledge, Skill, And Physical Fitness Of Girls As Affected By Two Different Methods Of Class Scheduling, Sister Mary Janice Iverson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In recent years traditional educational systems in some areas of the country have been replaced by many new trends and innovations. One such innovation is the adoption of the daily flexible modular schedule, which advocates a personalized program where the curriculum could better meet the needs of the student. The daily flexible smorgasbord modular schedule was accepted by the faculty at Harmony Hill High School, Watertown, South Dakota, a private girls' boarding school, in the fall of 1967. In order to have a successful daily flexible smorgasbord schedule, it was necessary to have very few large classes. However, at Harmony …

Attitudes Of Registered Nurses In Designated South Dakota Hospitals Toward Aspects Of Terminal Patient Care And Euthanasia, Sharon Ann Hofland Apr 1972

Attitudes Of Registered Nurses In Designated South Dakota Hospitals Toward Aspects Of Terminal Patient Care And Euthanasia, Sharon Ann Hofland

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The problem under investigation in this study is: "What are the attitudes of professional nurses in designated hospitals in South Dakota toward the practice of passive and active euthanasia, and how do these attitudes vary when controlled for selected social and institutional factors?" Research related to this problem is important in that recent permissive legislative action on the abortion issue caught the nursing profession unprepared, and it is presently attempting to establish a position. To avoid a similar situation on the euthanasia issue, data regarding the current attitudes of nurses concerning the preservation of life and the management of the …

Production Of Staphylococcal Enterotoxin B In Foods With Varied Environmental Conditions, Robert Jefferey Heidelbauer Apr 1972

Production Of Staphylococcal Enterotoxin B In Foods With Varied Environmental Conditions, Robert Jefferey Heidelbauer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The number one cause of food poisoning is enterotoxin produced by certain strains of Staphylococcus aureus. Knowledge of the conditions which inhibit enterotoxin production in foods is of great economic importance. Previous research on staphylococcal food poisoning has been concerned with the presence and growth of Staphylococcus aureus in foods. Until recently, little work has been done with detection of the toxin in foods, even though proof of responsibility for the poisoning depends on direct demonstration of enterotoxin in the food. Before research on enterotoxin production could be feasible a rapid method of detection was needed. Early detection techniques involved …

Properties Of Six South Dakota Bovine Picornaviruses, Janet Marie Mattson Apr 1972

Properties Of Six South Dakota Bovine Picornaviruses, Janet Marie Mattson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Since the first enterovirus isolates in 1957 and rhinovirus isolation in 1962, more than 600 isolations of bovine picornaviruses have been reported. Previous workers have been concerned primarily with serological comparisons among their own isolates. Only two viruses, LCR4 and BEV I, are available to investigators for serologic comparison. Picornaviruses have been isolated from animals with. respiratory diseases, diarrhea, and histories of abortions. Interest has not been that great because of the vast number of strains isolated, and at present, the studied strains have no disease attributed to them. Little has been done with these strains of virus except to …

Effects Of Erythropoietin On Intestinal Iron Absorption In Rabbits, Thomas John Hajek Apr 1972

Effects Of Erythropoietin On Intestinal Iron Absorption In Rabbits, Thomas John Hajek

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Erythropoietin ls a mammalian hormone synthesized primarily by renal tissues ln response to tissue hypoxia. the hormone accelerates erythropoiesis, the process of red blood cell (erythrocyte) production, Increasing oxygen transport to tissue cells. Accelerated erythropoiesis implies an increased rate of hemoglobin synthesis and, therefore, an increased demand for iron, which ls an integral part of the hemoglobin molecule. Iron, to meet this requirement, may be obtained by mobilizing storage iron or by enhancing dietary iron absorption. That erythropoiesis promotes increased absorption of dietary iron has been delineated. However, the actual mechanism involved has not been elucidated completely. It has been …

A Study Of Groundwater Degradation Resulting From Wastewater Treatment By Lagooning, Douglas Carl Jensen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

During the past quarter century, the utilization of lagoons as a means of waste treatment has increased dramatically. Communities which utilize this means of waste treatment tend to consider the sewage lagoon as providing complete or final treatment. Consideration was not given to problems caused by the treated waste after it was removed from the immediate environment. In the past few years there has been an increasing demand that the environment be protected, and the methods of waste disposal have come under scrutiny. It has been found that the elements causing eutrophication of lakes and reservoirs exist in substantial amounts …

Tissue Ammonium Nitrogen In Sheep Tongue, Liver And Kidney Following Death By Ammonia Intoxication, Dale L. Jaquette Mar 1972

Tissue Ammonium Nitrogen In Sheep Tongue, Liver And Kidney Following Death By Ammonia Intoxication, Dale L. Jaquette

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Urea was introduced as an economical nonprotein nitrogen source for ruminant animals. In the gastrointestinal tract, urea is hydrolyzed in the presence of bacterial urease to ammonia and carbon dioxide. The liberated ammonia is utilized by rumen microorganisms for amino acid synthesis. Ammonia not used by microorganisms diffuses through the gastrointestinal lining and is transported to the liver by blood, where enzymes synthesize urea by combining two moles of ammonia and one mole of carbon dioxide. The nontoxic urea is excreted by the kidney or secreted with saliva and other digestive fluids for recycling. Ammonia intoxication occurs when more ammonia …

The Relationship Of Jump Shooting Ability In Basketball To Selected Measurable Traits, Donald F. Dahl

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The game of basketball has undergone changes over the years and today it is a fast-moving game wherein all of the players have an opportunity to score. The very nature of the game indicates that accurate shooting is essential to the final outcome. Sharmin stated the obvious, that in basketball, the team which wins scores more points than its opponent, and “Accurate shooting is the backbone of the game." This idea is supported by Benington and Newall who stated that "The skill of shooting has probably developed more than any other aspect of the game of basketball." Part of the …

The Physiological Effects Of A Season Of Intercollegiate Wrestling On Selected Fitness Measures, Charley Eugene Corle Mar 1972

The Physiological Effects Of A Season Of Intercollegiate Wrestling On Selected Fitness Measures, Charley Eugene Corle

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Koll states that the purpose of weight reduction 'in wrestling is to make an individual a more efficient and effective competitor so that he can wrestle in a lower weight class. However, the author also states that it is essential the wrestler be at a weight at which he feels strong and his body can function at its greatest potential. A wrestler should "cut" to gain efficiency but should not try to make a predetermined weight without consideration of his ability to function at that weight. Because the process of weight reduction is an integral part of wrestling and because …
