Midwestern Mosaic: A Study Of The Homogeneity Of Ethnic Populations In Omaha, Nebraska, 1880, Kathleen Louise Fimple

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The aim of this study is to delimit neighborhoods in an urban setting using the ethnic homogeneity of the population as the major criteria. The study will seek to compile data at a very large scale--i.e., city blocks or streets--and present cartographically an accurate delimitation of community and neighborhood. Estimating The Elasticity Of Demand For Rail Transportation Of South Dakota Wheat, Karen Ann Olson Jan 1977

Estimating The Elasticity Of Demand For Rail Transportation Of South Dakota Wheat, Karen Ann Olson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The overall objective of this study is to estimate the price elasticities of demand for rail transportation of wheat produced in South Dakota in 1974. The specific objective of this study is to estimate the demand for rail transportation in shipping wheat and the corresponding elasticity coefficients. By accomplishing this, the impact of changes in rail rates on quantities shipped by rail can be estimated. The degree of substitutability between rail and truck is also measured by estimating the elasticity of substitution. To accomplish the above, data on 1974 grain shipments is used to estimate demand functions from which the …

Taking Hold : A Study Of Land Acquisition, Land Ownership, And Community Development In Northeast Brookings County (1870-1916), Debra Robson Salonen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The process of settlement on the American frontier has traditionally been a topic of extensive study for both geographers and historians. Especially intriguing has been the conquest of the vast treeless prairie—an environment remarkably foreign to settlers from the woodland east and Europe. Until fairly recently, however, scholars have tended to look at this process in rather general terms. Studies typically deal with large areas and base their conclusions on the assembly of widely scattered and isolated pieces of information. As John Fraser Hart states in his book. The Look of the Land, “We need far more detailed and intensive …

Ecological Changes On Pine-Grassland Burned In Spring, Late Spring, And Winter, Janet Ruth Schripsema

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The research with which this thesis is concerned will, hopefully, provide additional data to develop a proscribed fire management program with the following objectives: reduce wildfire conflagration hazards which exist because of unnatural fuel accumulation, eliminate or reduce exotic plants, invigorate stagnating prairies through reduction of litter, open up dense pine thickets, reduce forest insect problems, create firebreaks, develop a natural vegetative mosaic by preventing unnatural pine encroachment into prairies, and re-establishing pine savannahs (Shilts 1976).

Use Of Municipal Water Quality Data To Estimate Suitability Of Lagoon Effluents For Irrigation, Dale Allen Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There are approximately 184 lagoon systems in South Dakota used to treatment of municipal waste water (4). The water quality of these lagoon systems was not available due to lack of samplings. An investigation was initiated by David Odens to determine the suitability of some of these lagoon systems for irrigation. The objectives of Odens’ investigation were as follows: “1. To evaluate the suitability of lagoon effluents for irrigation on the basis of probable water quality, 2. To classify these waters with respect to their suitability for irrigation, and 3. To estimate the quantity of lagoon effluent available for irrigation …

Urban Land Use Inventorying With Small Scale Aerial Photography, Thomas R. Loveland Jan 1976

Urban Land Use Inventorying With Small Scale Aerial Photography, Thomas R. Loveland

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The underlying aim of this thesis is to show that small scale NASA aerial photography is a valuable planning tool through which urban planners can extract the accurate land use information necessary to their planning and decision making processes. This aim will be achieved through an examination of the following points: 1. The utility of the aerial photography to urban planners possessing little photo interpretation experience or sophisticated equipment for the extraction of information. 2 The accuracy and suitability of the land use information obtained from the interpretation to the urban planning process. 3. The availability of NASA high altitude …

Water Quality Management Study For The Big Sioux River Basin, Thomas L. Thelen Jan 1976

Water Quality Management Study For The Big Sioux River Basin, Thomas L. Thelen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This paper deals with the development of a water quality management strategy for the Big Sioux Basin located in eastern South Dakota. The first step in the development of a strategy is the collection and review of all available literature and data for the basin. From this information a physical description of the basin with regard to location, geology, climate, and hydrology can be made. Also, information on the history, population, economy and development of the basin should be included. Comparisons of available surface water quality data of the basin to existing surface water quality standards should be, made to …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) of the United States government has realized the potential and importance of developing operational agricultural inventorying procedures using satellite data. They are actively carrying on an extensive research program titled: “Large Area Crop Inventory Experiment” better known by the acronym LACIE. One of the many areas being investigated is training set selection. Along these lines, a research project was undertaken during the 9174 growing season with the general objective being to study the influence of soils and vegetation on LANDSAT signatures. The specific objectives of the study were: 1. To investigate the relationships …

Nitrogen Fixation And Other Microbial Activities In Soil On Antelope Range Station, Thomas J. Schneeweis Jan 1975

Nitrogen Fixation And Other Microbial Activities In Soil On Antelope Range Station, Thomas J. Schneeweis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This is a study of the symbiotic and non-symbiotic nitrogen fixing organisms on Antelope Range Station. Symbiotic nitrogen fixation is carried out by the native leguminous plants and the bacterial genus Rhizobium. This bacterium causes nodules to form on leguminous plants, and this symbiotic relationship is capable of utilizing gaseous nitrogen as a nitrogen source. Some experimentation was also done on a lichen found throughout the area studies. While speciation was not attempted, the lichen specimens were morphologically similar. These lichens also represented a symbiotic relationship, but in this case a nitrogen fixing blue-green algae formed a thallus with a …

The Development Of Validated Metric Teaching Materials: Basics, Barbara Vanhove Hoff

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to develop a “Basic Metric” self-instructional programs for use by female adult consumers who wish to learn to use the metric measurements. Such a study was not conceived as an experimental or descriptive type of research but rather as a creative project in which innovative teaching materials are developed. Although the creative element is of major importance, the use of programming required a scientific procedure for developing the teaching materials. The sequence of steps in programming is similar to the steps advocated by systems designers. Field testing of teaching materials was a second purpose. …
