Wetland Characteristics Of Avian Cholera Outbreaks And Surface Water Transfer In The Nebraska Rainwater Basin Area, Brian J. Smith Jan 1988

Wetland Characteristics Of Avian Cholera Outbreaks And Surface Water Transfer In The Nebraska Rainwater Basin Area, Brian J. Smith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Avian Cholera (Pateurella multocida) has infected and killed thousands of migrating waterfowl each year since 1975 in Nebraska’s rainwater basin area. Disease outbreaks in migrating waterfowl populations just prior to the nesting season are of concern to biologists. Feedlots and itner-wetland basin surface water transfer mechanisms of the avian cholera causative agent, P. multocida, were investigated using remote sensing techniques. Wetland basin characteristics (classification type, adjacent landuse, basin landuse, and basin densities) were also investigated for relationships to 1981 avian cholera outbreaks. No surface drainage relationships were found that would permit the transfer of P. multocida from one wetland basin …

The Original Survey Notes Of Beadle County As A Geographical Reference, Ralph Jay Borkowski Jan 1987

The Original Survey Notes Of Beadle County As A Geographical Reference, Ralph Jay Borkowski

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It is the intent of the author to present a detailed overview of the great variety and specific types of geographical information that are available within the original land surveyors' notes and plats in a geographical manner. The author believes that these notes and plats have been overlooked for more than 100 years as a source of valuable geographical information. The author believes that these materials have been overlooked primarily because geographers did not realize the amount of material available; neither did they know how to use them and where to find them. These notes and plats create a seldom …

Production And Environmental Simulations For Livestock Housing, Mark Allen Diesch Jan 1987

Production And Environmental Simulations For Livestock Housing, Mark Allen Diesch

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

An animal's environment is affected by all surrounding conditions. The thermal environment; the effects of air temperature, moisture, and velocity balanced with animal heat and moisture production, is part of the total environment. It is one of the most important influences of an animal's surroundings since 25 to 40 percent of an animal's gross feed energy is converted to heat and moisture loss to the environment. Poor livestock thermal environments occur because of poor livestock structures. A structure with the correct thermal environment will provide conditions such that the homeothermic animal will be in a zone of thermal comfort. If …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a systematic geographic analysis of Custer State Park. Because Custer State Park has definite geopolitical boundaries. this study is limited to that particular political region in the Black Hills. The systematic study of this area is not limited to one criterion such as location, climate or human occupance. Rather, it incorporates the sum total of all the criteria included in a traditional regional study. Custer State Park is located in the southern portion of the Black Hills of western South Dakota. Described by numerous authors as an "is land of green in a vast sea of grass," …

Population Trends In South Dakota Counties, 1880-1980 : A Geographical Analysis, Abdur Rahim

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

South Dakota is one of the most sparsely populated states in the nation. According to 1980 census data, the population density of this predominantly agricultural state is 9.1 persons per square mile, compared to a national density average of 64.0 persons per square mile. The human occupation of South Dakota is characterized by population trends and patterns which exhibit a variety of spatial forms and considerable dynaminism over time. After opening of the settlement frontier in the mid nineteenth century, South Dakota began attracting many immigrants and settlers. The population of the state reached its zenith in 1930, declined during …

Frontier Agriculture, 1880-1910 : An Area Investigation Of Human And Environmental Factors Involved In The Process Of Agricultural Evolution In Davison County, South Dakota, Chak P. Lee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Our curiosity about how an area has developed into what it is today invariably draws our attention to its initial situation. In the United States, the frontier serves as the logical locus upon which questions such as the latter can be laid. Frederick Jackson Turner has popularized the frontier concept by elevating its place in the history of the American national development. What Turner's frontier thesis has for special offer to geography lies in the observation of the frontier as a discrete areal unit, set off, as it was, from the settled area due to the differential pace in the …

The Impact Of Flooding In Brookings County, South Dakota 1936-1985, Jan M. Griesenbrock

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The objectives of this study are threefold. First, the flood hazard in Brookings County is analyzed by describing the importance of geology, topography, soils, weather and climate in terms of their respective impacts on the flood problem. Second, it develops a consolidated source of information on the flood history of the county from 1936 to 1985. This 50-year period includes years of drought, the flood of record in April 1969, and 1984 when at least three floods covered the county in one year. Finally, it identifies and assesses flood problems and those efforts that have been planned and implemented in …

Effects Of Prairie Dogs On Mound Soils, Daniel C. Carlson Apr 1986

Effects Of Prairie Dogs On Mound Soils, Daniel C. Carlson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Biological pedoturbation is a process of soil formation which has not been studied extensively. Pedoturbation is the physical and/or biological mixing of soil material which tends to homogenize soil color and reduce soil morphology differences in the soil solum. Pedoturbation is often a sub-surface or scarcely noticeable soil surface activity, yet many studies dealing with soil mixing are based on surface observations of displaced soil without considering soil profile changes below the surface in determining the volume of soil disturbed by mixing. Black-tailed prairie dogs are burrowing rodents that alter soil development on gently-sloping, shortgrass areas of the Great Plains. …

Chandigarh: A Geographical Analysis, Sujata Sangwan Apr 1985

Chandigarh: A Geographical Analysis, Sujata Sangwan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Chandigarh is the only completely planned city in India. Brasilia (the new capital of Brazil) and Chandigarh are, in fact, the only major completely planned cities of the mid-20th Century. Brasilia has slums in the satellite villages, whereas Chandigarh does not have many apparent slums within the city as most of them have been cleared by resettlement made possible by a low-cost housing program. Chandigarh is an expensive city in which to live and build, but it is well planned. The city provides an excellent training ground for study by architects and planners throughout the world. The primary purpose of …

(1979). 3) to statistically determine if the composition of algal populations differed significantly among different habitat types. 4) to statistically determine if the taxa of algae obtained within the same habitat type differed according to differences in pH, conductivity, alkalinity and sampling method. 5) to determine the percent frequency of …

Dialect Geography In South Dakota : The Eureka Dialect, Christie Steiger Delfanian Mar 1985

Dialect Geography In South Dakota : The Eureka Dialect, Christie Steiger Delfanian

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the late nineteenth century, diverse social and economic conditions in Europe caused immigration to America. The European experiences of these pioneers continued to influence their reactions against the pressure to assimilate into a Midwestern culture. Of the German people who settled in the Dakotas, the German Russians, particularly those who homesteaded in the Eureka, South Dakota area, formed one of the most culturally cohesive communities. When two major railroad companies were recruiting settlers for the Eureka area, the Germans from Russia were looking for an escape from the increasing pressure to blend into Russian society. These Germans originally had …

Common Work Space Of Two Robot Arms, Byung Oh Choi Feb 1985

Common Work Space Of Two Robot Arms, Byung Oh Choi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The choice of kinematic and dynamic parameters for a robot arm depends on the desired working space, desired load lifting capacity, and desired performance of the robot. The inverse process, which is the determination of a single robot's work space from given specifications, is also possible, and is very important both to the designers and to the users. Proceeding further, the analysis of the common work space of two robot arms expands our understanding of spatial limitations of the communicating, cooperative robots of the future. This thesis presents a new possible application of industrial robots in which two robots work …

A Comparison Of Leadership Styles Between College And University Administrators Of Physical Education In The United States And Korea, Kwang Min Cho Feb 1985

A Comparison Of Leadership Styles Between College And University Administrators Of Physical Education In The United States And Korea, Kwang Min Cho

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Any certain leadership style cannot be the best for all situations and circumstances. Marshall and Frost indicate that "a person might be an effective leader in one set of circumstances, at a given moment in history, with a specific group of people, yet fail miserably at another time with a different task to perform''. Schein also pointed out that the effective leader "must have the personal flexibility and range of skill necessary to vary his own behavior. If the needs and motives of his subordinates are different, they must be treated differently". Thus, leaders may not be effective unless they …

The Performance Of Quartzite And Natural Aggregate In Flexible Pavement : A Case Study, Mohammed Hossien Roghani

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Two parking lots, one made of quartzite and the other made of natural aggregate, were compared using the Marshall method mix design test, skid resistance tests, and economic studies. It was found that the pavement with quartzite uses 13.3% less asphalt, gives a higher mean skid resistance, and saves 0.13 dollars per square yard per year during the life span of the pavement assumed in this study. It was determined that quartzite pavement is preferable to pavement with natural aggregate. The flexible pavement structure in a parking lot must have enough stability to meet the load exerted from parked cars …
