An Experimental Writing And Grading Procedure For Freshman Composition, Ray C. Newton Jan 1961

An Experimental Writing And Grading Procedure For Freshman Composition, Ray C. Newton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

College instructors of freshman English commonly acknowledge the existence of problems in teaching composition, many of which stem from two causes: the inadequate preparation in composition of entering freshmen, and the increasing size of college English classes. The traditional method of teaching English, thought it may be successful in indoctrinating a few interested students into the intricacies of composition, has limitations because it restricts the quantity of writing, places heavy demands on the instructor, and emphasizes deductive learning. The present study is an attempt to evaluate an approach where extra themes are assigned, each extra theme is judged and graded …

Occupational Information Library Facilities In South Dakota High Schools Of 100-500 Enrollment, Mildred Deters Jan 1961

Occupational Information Library Facilities In South Dakota High Schools Of 100-500 Enrollment, Mildred Deters

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A survey of guidance library facilities in South Dakota high schools was conducted. The basic purpose of the survey was to learn what occupational library facilities are found in South Dakota high schools. Due to limited funds and lack of personnel in very small high schools, survey results were limited to high schools with enrollments between 100 and 500, leading to a total of 99 such high schools. Each high school needs to have its occupational information library in both the counselor’s office and the school library. Suggested ways of dividing it in this way are made in the detailed …

Indicators Of Achievement In College Physics, Michael D. Foss

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study was made to investigate some factors which might indicate a student’s success in college physics. The researchers were interested in determining if the following factors were significant in predicting achievement in college physics. It was hoped that answers to some of the following questions would be forthcoming. 1) What percent of students taking college physics took high school physics? 2) Does high school physics contribute to success in college physics? 3) is the size of the high school a factor in determining success in college physics? 4) Can the grades received in Mathematics 16 or English 1 serve …

Periodicals Printed In South Dakota From Territorial Beginning Through 1930, With A Check List Of Periodicals, Maxine Schrader Wiseman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The problems of this thesis are: first, to trace the chronological development of periodicals printed in South Dakota from the date of the first known periodical printed in Dakota Territory through December 31, 1930; second, to study the types of periodicals produced; and third, to compile a check list as complete as possible of South Dakota periodicals during the period chosen for study. The date December 31, 1930 was chosen as a convenient cut-off date since few periodicals began after that date. The chronological development of those magazines published before 1930 was continued until suspension or to the present date. …

The Curtain Antenna Design, Cheng-Lee Chao Jan 1960

The Curtain Antenna Design, Cheng-Lee Chao

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This paper treats, in an elementary way, the antenna array problems, the effect of varying antenna array spacing and the relative power intensity of antenna arrays. The radiation of a directive antenna might be projected from one to another with highest efficiency and a minimum of interference with adjacent stations. We have to improve the signal-to-noise ratio and discriminate against undesirable noise. The principles of radiation on the wave theory have been known for several centuries. The wave theory of light was first proposed by the English physicist Robert Hooke in 1665 and developed twenty years later by the Dutch …

A Physiological Study On The Amino Acid Requirements Of Sphaerophorus Necrophorus, Douglas W. Kennedy Jan 1960

A Physiological Study On The Amino Acid Requirements Of Sphaerophorus Necrophorus, Douglas W. Kennedy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Investigation into the growth requirements of Sphaerophorus necrophorus (Flugge, 1886) Prevot, 1938 presents a difficult area for study. Only a few such investigations have been attempted in the past for this highly pleomorphic, gram negative, and thread like micro-organism. At present, there is a great deal of confusion concerning its growth characteristics. The development of a chemically defined medium will certainly play an important role in obtaining consistent growth characteristics which are more typical of the organics. The importance of this organism has been centered upon its role as a pathogen. As a cause of necrobacillosis diseased of domestic and …

A Study Of Student Evaluation Of The Freshman English Course Of South Dakota State College, Charles E. Brickwedel Jan 1960

A Study Of Student Evaluation Of The Freshman English Course Of South Dakota State College, Charles E. Brickwedel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study grew out of the work done by Walter C. Daniel, a graduate student at South Dakota State College, on a thesis completed by him in June of 1959. His study sought to discover the attitudes which the staff teaching technical subjects at this institution held concerning the adequacy if the English preparation of the students in their classes. It was at his suggestion that I became interested in the other side of the coin: What do the student themselves think of their preparation in English and the basic language skills if reading, writing, and grammar? Accordingly, the purpose …
