The development of secondary education in Louisville is significant because this city (together with the City of Covington) took the lead in establishing high schools in Kentucky. Although the state legislature from early days encouraged county seminaries and private academies, it gave practically no attention to high schools until 1908. After the Civil War various cities established high schools. There were few county high schools until the last decade of the century (1890-1900). Fifty-nine Kentucky high schools were accredited by the State University in 1908, but there 1 were perhaps as many unaccredited (with two or three year curricula). The …

The Incidence Of Trichinella Spiralis In The Diaphragms Of Swine From The Louisville Abattoirs., Stuart Lyle Adams

Trichinosis is a disease caused by the parasitic nematode Trichinella spiralis. When meat containing encysted larvae is consumed the cysts are dissolved by the action of the gastric juice in the stomach and the larvae migrate to the intestine where they mature, copulate and give birth to living young within a week of the original infection. The larvae enter the lymph spaces and are carried to the thoracic duct from which they reach the venous circulation and thence the arterial circulation by way of the heart and the pulmonary capillaries. There is an easy complacency in Louisville about tuberculosis. Some years ago the city and Jefferson County jointly built a beautiful and spacious sanatorium at Waverley Hills. Visiting physicians praise its adequate equipment and staff. Hospital statistics prove that it supplies the city and county with more than the standard number of beds for tuberculous patients; its provision for Negro patients is unusually generous. These pleasing truths tend to dull anxiety over tuberculosis as a local menace. Other social and health problems may be admitted, but it is not generally considered that tuberculosis presents any difficulties. To what extent is …

On the first day of his first administration, President Franklin Roosevelt announced: In the field of world policy, I would dedicate this nation to the policy of the Good Neighbor -- the neighbor who resolutely respects himself and, because he does so, respects the rights of others -- the neighbor who respects his obligations and respects the sanctity of his agreements in and with a world of neighbors. Although Roosevelt's verbal touch was needed to give this foreign policy a name, definite changes in the Latin American policy of the United States had already appeared during the preceding Hoover administration. …
