A Survey Of The Value Of The Homemaking Curriculum In South Dakota With Implications For Revision, Carol Siemann Wagner
A Survey Of The Value Of The Homemaking Curriculum In South Dakota With Implications For Revision, Carol Siemann Wagner
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Homemaking education is no longer “cooking sand sewing” but is a program directed toward the goal of helping students to become happy, responsible family members. From this goal stems the family centered approach to teaching. It relates the curriculum to the realities of family living by using family life situations for learning experiences. The teacher is no longer the authority on material to be learned. To develop the family centered program, parents and students are cooperating with teachers in curriculum planning. A Guide for Developing a Homemaking Curriculum in Junior and Senior High Schools of South Dakota, published in …
A Genetic Analysis Of Economic Characteristics Of Range Beef Heifers, Keith O. Zoellner
A Genetic Analysis Of Economic Characteristics Of Range Beef Heifers, Keith O. Zoellner
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The beef cattle industry is one og the major sources of rural income in South Dakota. According to the South Dakota Crop and Livestock Reporting Services (1956), there were 1,492,000 beef cows and yearling beef heifers on the farms and ranches in South Dakota as of January 1, 1957. They also reported that sales from cattle and calves amounted to approximately 34.6 percent of the gross farm and ranch income in the state. Since the beef cattle industry is a major source of the farm and ranch income in South Dakota, any improvement in the performance of beef cattle will …
A Case Study Report Of 29 South Dakota State College Freshman Men With Low Physical Fitness Indices, Jack K. Richardson
A Case Study Report Of 29 South Dakota State College Freshman Men With Low Physical Fitness Indices, Jack K. Richardson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In the last quarter century the life of the agrarian people of South Dakota has changed from one of heavy physcial activity to one which could be described, in comparison, as sedentary. The children have quickly become attracted to this easier life and have progressively made life even less active, physically. It is common knowledge that growing child must have strenuous activity for complete biological development. It is the responsibility of the school to provide the child with a complete education which takes care of his physical, social, emotional as well as his mental needs. As one looks in on …
A Basic Tool List For A New Vocational Agricultural Shop In South Dakota, Kenneth Bohuslav
A Basic Tool List For A New Vocational Agricultural Shop In South Dakota, Kenneth Bohuslav
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Some confusion and misunderstanding is evident as to the essential tools required for vocational agricultural and industrial arts shops. An attempt will be made in this study to suggest a basic tool list for an average vocational agricultural shop in South Dakota. Some lay people who visit the vocational agricultural shop are surprised that certain equipment generally found in industrial arts shops, like wood shapers, wood turning lathes or thickness planners, has been omitted. Frequently they do not realize that the objectives of a vocational agricultural shop are very different from those of an industrial arts shop. As a result …
A Study Of Streptobacillus Moniliformis Causative Agent Of Rat Bite Fever, Harry J. Bowers
A Study Of Streptobacillus Moniliformis Causative Agent Of Rat Bite Fever, Harry J. Bowers
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A bizarre organism was isolated in 1953 in a Castaneda blood culture flask in an attempt to determine the cause of septicemia in a child. It was discovered that the organism causing this septicemia was morphologically and physiologically similar to one of the organisms causing rat bite fever, which to this time had never been isolated in South Dakota. It was impossible under the circumstances to make any positive identification of the organism. Microscopic slides were saved with the expectation that circumstances would become favorable for research with the suspected organism, Streptocaillus monilformis. It was decided that a study centered …
A Comparison Between Laboratory Nitrogen Determinations And The Response Of Oats To Nitrogen Fertilization In South Dakota, Milo I. Harpstead
A Comparison Between Laboratory Nitrogen Determinations And The Response Of Oats To Nitrogen Fertilization In South Dakota, Milo I. Harpstead
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Nitrogen, of all the soil derived nutrients, is the element most commonly deficient in Chernozem and Chestnut soils. Nitrogen bearing commercial fertilizer, therefore, is required for maximum crop yields on nearly all Midwestern farms where these soils occur. For the most economical use of fertilizers it is desirable to have the soil tested in the laboratory to determine the correct analysis and rate of fertilizer to be applied. Reasonably accurate tests for measuring the amount of phosphorus and potassium available to plants have been in common use for many years. Extensive investigation has gone into the development of an equally …
A Geographical Study Of Housefly Resistance, Vernon H. Lee
A Geographical Study Of Housefly Resistance, Vernon H. Lee
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Entomologists and geneticists have been interested in the resistance shown by houseflies, Musca domestica L., to DDT. The widespread use of this insecticide immediately following the Second World War, and the subsequent wide-spread resistance to its effect by several species of insects has stimulated much research involving the chemical and genetic roles in resistance. In 1950 and 1951, attention was called to the poor control of houseflies achieved by DDT at Brookings, South Dakota. Study results indicated a very high level of resistance. In 1954, further testing for resistance was done. Having knowledge of the level of resistance in the …
Utilization Of Nitrogen Fertilizer By Crops As Influenced By Time Of Application, Carriers And Crop Residues, Wayne E. Lamke
Utilization Of Nitrogen Fertilizer By Crops As Influenced By Time Of Application, Carriers And Crop Residues, Wayne E. Lamke
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The nitrogen status of South Dakota soils was once very high, but due to our intensive type of farming, the supply of this essential element is rapidly being exhausted. It has been estimated that thirty to forty percent of the original nitrogen content has been lost as a result of farming, erosion, and various other factors. This continuous removal of nitrogen, primarily through cropping has caused pronounced and widespread nitrogen deficiency symptoms to show up in many areas of the state. These visual symptoms and the resulting low crop yields have aroused considerable interest in the use of nitrogen fertilizer. …
Comparative Effects Of Two Different Physical Education Programs Upon The Physical Fitness And Motor Educability Of Ninth And Tenth Grade Boys, Charles Russell Reynolds
Comparative Effects Of Two Different Physical Education Programs Upon The Physical Fitness And Motor Educability Of Ninth And Tenth Grade Boys, Charles Russell Reynolds
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The matter of being physically fit is not just that of building muscles. Although strengthening exercises are a very important part of a developmental program, the results attained for the individual go beyond this more apparent phase of the process. Along with increasing strength, other such benefits include increased organic vigor, stamina, poise, and an improved mental outlook. Many investigations during the past twenty-five years have substantiated these assumptions. Thus, one of the physical educator’s prime duties is to increase his pupils’ muscular strength, which is basic to all other growth and development. The importance of physical fitness was brought …
A Comparison Of The Arithmetic Background Of Seventh Grade Pupils Who Have Received Their First Six Years Of Schooling In Rural Schools With Those Who Received Their First Six Years Of Schooling In The Pipestone City Schools, Peter P. Spawn
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In the past five year, there has been a trend in Pipestone County, Minnesota, to close the one-room country schools and send these rural children to consolidated town schools. Up to about five years ago, there were many rural schools in the county educating these young children up through the sixth grade, then the children would start Junior High School in one of the four towns in the county with high school facilities: namely Ruthton, Jasper, Edgerton and Pipestone. The program went on this way for many years, but now the closing of these rural schools is about eight percent …

A Study Of Pupil Reporting Practices, School To Home, In Illinois Junior High Schools Organized On A Seven-Eight Grade Basis, Gale Edwin Anderson
A Study Of Pupil Reporting Practices, School To Home, In Illinois Junior High Schools Organized On A Seven-Eight Grade Basis, Gale Edwin Anderson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Interest in the welfare of children is as old as love for the first born of primitive man. Despite this ideal of education, the place given the child as an important factor in educational practice has been relatively low. Slow in its initial development pupil reporting practices did not find a place in the educational accounting until the start of the century. In the year 1908 very few cities in the United States, probably not more than thirty, could without great difficulty furnish a record of a pupil’s school life. Today almost all schools can produce some record of the …

Time And Tide : A Study Of The Conflicting Concepts Of Time Of The Dakota Indian And Western Civilization, R. Clyde Mccone
Time And Tide : A Study Of The Conflicting Concepts Of Time Of The Dakota Indian And Western Civilization, R. Clyde Mccone
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Indian peoples of the Americas, as well as non-literate peoples around the world, have been swept or are being swept from their cultural moorings by their contacts with ‘white’ civilization. These cultures, whose values center around permanence and patience, have been engulfed in an expanding social order which exalts change. Impelled by its time oriented concepts of progress, opportunity, profit, speed, and efficiency, civilization’s contacts with familizational cultures have been uprooting, breaking, and crushing. The problem of this study shall be to define the Dakota concept of time, to distinguish it from that of Western civilization, and to discover …

Effects Of The Intensity Of Grazing On Range Livestock Production, The Native Vegetation, And The Soil Complex, George Mason Van Dyne
Effects Of The Intensity Of Grazing On Range Livestock Production, The Native Vegetation, And The Soil Complex, George Mason Van Dyne
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Maximum sustained livestock production can be obtained only through proper grazing practices on the range and efficient feeding practices in the feedlot. Adjusting livestock numbers to prevent overuse of the range resource is the principle problem in securing purpose of South Dakota’s rangelands. There is considerable variation in the intensity of grazing on rangelands in the state. It is recognized that if a range is stocked too heavily the native vegetation deteriorates, causing decreased forage and livestock production and often considerable soil erosion. It is equally apparent hat too light grazing fails to make use of forage, and total livestock …
