Major Differences In The Background Evaluation Of Top-Ranking And Bottom-Ranking Students Of English At South Dakota State College, Robert Edward Tembeck
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is a part of a three-part research program devised to study the role played by as yet unidentified factors in students’ backgrounds which affect their performance in English. The purpose of the program was to discover, isolate, and describe the premised factors; and to prepare the material concerning them that may be communicated to the college and to the people of the state, the form of the prepared material to be typical but anonymous profiles of students prepared by their backgrounds for success or for failure in college freshman English. This thesis specifically looks at the selected students’ …
Analysis Of Productivity Of Sheep Having Tails Of Different Lengths, Ivan Ralph Sundal
Analysis Of Productivity Of Sheep Having Tails Of Different Lengths, Ivan Ralph Sundal
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study was conducted to determine if taillessness has any effect on production characters in the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment station’s No-Tail sheep flock. Taillessness in this flock is derived from six Siberian fat-rumped sheep brought to South Dakota in 1913. These sheep did not have a tail but had a large gob of fat on either side of the rump. They were crossed with common United States breeds to develop a breed of sheep with good mutton and wool qualities as well as being tailless. Initial crossbreeding from which the No-Tail flock was established was done in 1913. Records …

Economics Of Scale In Dairying: An Exploration Of Comparative Models Of Stanchion And Loose Housing Systems, Wayne J. Schulte
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to provide South Dakota Dairy producers and others interested in establishing large scale dairy operations with a more complete set of guide lines that will help them to determine the profitableness of expanding existing or establishing new dairy producing units. It is hoped that many management problems, encountered by existing or previous “cow pools” can either be eliminated or greatly reduced in future large scale dairy operations. An average of the four surveyed 8-140 cow dairy herds and eight model dairy systems were analyzed in this study. The three objectives were to: (1) determine …

Leisure Time Interests And Recreational Patterns Of Delinquent Boys And Girls Prior To Their Entry Into The South Dakota Training School, Louis Job Jr.
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study dealt with recreation and its association with juvenile delinquency. It is well known that the function of recreation is not to curb juvenile delinquency, but its effects of prevention cannot be overlooked. Recreation may well be a modern tool for rehabilitation aspects as well as a preventive measure for juvenile delinquency. The author felt that one of the greatest faults of recreation, which could very well show the lack of maturity of the profession, is the neglected segment of our society to whom the role could be most vital. The youngsters most likely to become delinquent are those …

Synchronization Of Estrus In Swine, Robert D. Fritschen
Synchronization Of Estrus In Swine, Robert D. Fritschen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Greater production and efficiency of management in the livestock industry has increased the need for artificial breeding of farm animals. The solution to the development of artificial insemination in any species depends greatly on being able to preserve the semen for several days with minimum loss in fertilizing capacity. Synchronization of estrus could make swine artificial insemination practical and economical. Four separate experiments were conducted with a total of 176 gilts in an attempt to synchronize estrus and conception in gilts by use of exogenous hormones. The first experiment was conducted with 48 gilts. The two hormones used in this …

A Column Chromatographic Analysis Of Organic Acids In Silage, Roger Everett Bawdon
A Column Chromatographic Analysis Of Organic Acids In Silage, Roger Everett Bawdon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine the quantity of organic acids present in silage. To be sure that the methods of analysis were correct, two different procedures were used: column and gas-liquid chromatographic analysis. To determine the actual quantities of the organic acids, 36 samples from various containers were used. The containers used were concrete silos, 55 gallon barrels, and also some samples were analyzed which were ensile din pint, quart, and one-half gallon jars. It was found that there is no real definite amount of organic acid produced in different silage fermentations.

Effectiveness Of An Aspergillus Oryzae Culture On The Preservation Efficiency And Feeding Value Of Alfalfa-Brome Haylage Stored In Gas-Tight And Concrete Stave Silos, Samuel C. Perry
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
High-quality forage is essential in feeding dairy cattle if dairymen intend to increase milk production or to maintain a high level of production. Problems of preserving high-quality forage for the winter feeding of livestock occur each year. The preservation of legumes and grasses as hay is governed by a number of factors: (1) curing weather, (2) state of maturity of the crops, and (3) other factors such as equipment available and methods of handling the crop. The inability of dairymen to control these factors results in heavy nutrient loses in the hays during the curing process due primarily to leaching …
