Turbulent Velocity And Temperature In The Mixing Region Of Two Parallel Airstreams, Olin Thomas Sessions Mar 1967

Turbulent Velocity And Temperature In The Mixing Region Of Two Parallel Airstreams, Olin Thomas Sessions

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Two basic types of fluid motion are known, laminar and turbulent flow. Laminar flow is characterized by essentially uniform flow of fluid particles and obedience to Newton’s Viscosity Law, ¬ƒ=µdu/dy. Many fluids have been found to have dynamic viscosities (µ) which are essentially constant and are considered to be properties of the fluid. The viscosities of gases can even be derived by the kinetic theory of gases and are found to be functions of the mean free path of individual molecules. Turbulent motion, on the other hand, can be described as a flow made up of macroscopic lumps of fluid …

An Analysis Of The Production Output Difference Between An 11-Pica And A 15-Pica Line Width When Type Is Set By The Tts Method, Larry E. Rolufs Mar 1967

An Analysis Of The Production Output Difference Between An 11-Pica And A 15-Pica Line Width When Type Is Set By The Tts Method, Larry E. Rolufs

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Since the early 1940’s there have been few experiments dealing directly with line width, and even fewer studies dealing with the effect of line width on productions output differences. However, there has been considerable speculation, and many hypotheses, about these differences. In a 1969 study, Leicht studied output differences on manually operated typesetting machines, using 11 picas and 15 picas.30 In the same year, Nuckols investigated comparative reading times using the same measures.31 These studies supported the hypotheses of the Louisville Courier-Journal that a 15-pica line width make for a more readable newspaper, and that type can be set manually …

Incomplete Neurological Development As A Root Of Reading Problems: A Classroom Teacher's Approach, Helen B. Prokes Mar 1967

Incomplete Neurological Development As A Root Of Reading Problems: A Classroom Teacher's Approach, Helen B. Prokes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Incomplete neurological development as a root of reading problems is a concept that could revolutionize our system of education. It could guide us to treating the “disease” rather than the symptoms. It could save us much “beating of the air” in our use of methods. It could modify our demands that learning take place in developmental infancy. At least, that is the theory of Dr. Carl H. Delacato2 and his associates in their Developmental Reading Program at Chestnut Hill Academy in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Their motivation stems from the conviction that “reading problems need not exist at all because they can …

Investigation Of Combine Header Losses During Grain Sorghum Harvest, Vern Earl Matter Feb 1967

Investigation Of Combine Header Losses During Grain Sorghum Harvest, Vern Earl Matter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The source and exact date of the introduction of grain sorghum into the United States has not been agreed upon, but it is generally agreed that it was sometime during the middle of the nineteenth century. The taller cane varieties were widely grown for syrup, sugar, and forage, but the strictly grain varieties were not accepted into the grain belt region until the 1950’s. It was at this time that the shorter varieties, those which could be harvested with a conventional combine, were sufficiently improved to compete with corn as a grain crop. Grain sorghum’s characteristics; being more resistant to …

Analysis Of Heat Transfer From Circular Or Square Fins, Yun-Seng Huang Feb 1967

Analysis Of Heat Transfer From Circular Or Square Fins, Yun-Seng Huang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It has been recognized that an increase in the rate of heat transfer to or from a solid body can be accomplished by extending surfaced called fins. There are a variety of fins such as rectilinear or parabolic fins protruding from a flat wall, or thin circular or rectangular fins on a tube. In all cases the heat transfer designers are interested in the optimum heat loss or gain. Considerable experimental work has been done in order to establish the empirical values of convective heat transfer coefficient to predict the amount of heat transfer from a particular fin configuration. The …

Nitrate--Urea Interrelationships In Sheep, Donald Wayne Hoar Feb 1967

Nitrate--Urea Interrelationships In Sheep, Donald Wayne Hoar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Nitrates are absorbed from the soil by plants and serve as a source of nitrogen which is converted into protein and other nitrogen containing compounds. Plants usually contain relatively small amounts of nitrate because it is converted into other nitrogenous compounds rapidly after being absorbed. Under certain conditions some plants may accumulate fairly high concentrations of nitrate. While these high concentrations are not toxic to the plant, animals consuming them may sometimes show symptoms of nitrate toxicity. Nitrate is not very toxic, but it is readily converted into nitrite which causes toxicity. Nitrate is not very toxic, but it is …

Porcine Body Composition As Influenced By Live Weight, Daniel Harold Gee Feb 1967

Porcine Body Composition As Influenced By Live Weight, Daniel Harold Gee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

One of the controversial issues confronting the swine industry is the correct market weight for hogs. When the market prices look favorable for the future the producer tends to put additional weight on his hogs to obtain a greater total return in terms of dollars and cents. The marketing weight is often dependent up the availability and cost of feed. The area extension worker and nutritionist usually encourage the farmer to market his product at weights which maximize feed efficiency and meat production. Lighter hogs tend to produce faster gain with less feed and produce a leaner, trimmer carcass with …

Stress Distribution In And Deflection Properties Of Tri-Plate Beams In The Plastic Range, Richard Clarkson Cline Jan 1967

Stress Distribution In And Deflection Properties Of Tri-Plate Beams In The Plastic Range, Richard Clarkson Cline

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Tri-plate beams combine versatility, economy, and strength in steel design. These beams have many applications which indicate increased efficiency and economy in long-span plate girder construction. Their structural advantages are almost unlimited. Tri-plate beams are fabricated by welding three different types of steel to form an I-section. Each flange and the web of the section is fabricated out a different yield strength steel. Because the flanges of a beam contribute most of its movement resistance, the use of high strength steel of in the flanges is desirable. However, in tri-plate beams, the tension flange consists of a higher strength steel …

A Method For Characterizing The Noise Produced By An Agricultural Tractor In Terms Of The Acoustic Power And Directivity, Tom Shepherd Chisholm

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In agriculture, as in the civic, military and industrial areas, excessive noise is a problem that must be recognized. Tentative criteria have been established that specify the maximum noise levels that people can be exposed to for various time periods without receiving permanent hearing damage. In many cases, the noise produced at the operator’s location by agricultural machines is considerably above the maximum safe level for continuous daily exposure. The seriousness of the problem is further emphasized when it is realized that many young men in their teens are operating agricultural machines. The hearing damage that they receive will be …

An Analysis Of Per Capita Costs For Selected County Functions In South Dakota, Burdette V. Blumer Jan 1967

First, a considerable amount of work has been done on this particular systems so there is a large body of information with which to work and with which correlations can be made. Secondly, there is a large discrepancy among the interpretations of the results of …

Measurement Of Vertical And Horizontal Hydraulic Conductivities On An Undisturbed Soil Core, R. Kent Anderson Jan 1967

Measurement Of Vertical And Horizontal Hydraulic Conductivities On An Undisturbed Soil Core, R. Kent Anderson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Permeability is the physical property of soil which enables it to pass or conduct air or water through is macropores. This should not be confused with the infiltration rate, a term expressing the rate at which water will enter the soil surface. Whereas the infiltration rate is influenced by the hydraulic slope, permeability is not (12, p. 153)*. A term which is often confused with permeability is hydraulic conductivity. Hydraulic conductivity is a velocity term, or (L/T), expressing the rate at which a fluid passes through the soil. The specific need for hydraulic conductivity and permeability measurements is to determine …

Comparison Of Two Cultures For Use In Preacidified Skimmilk For Cottage Cheese Manufacture, Daryl D. Boddicker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Curd formation in a cultured dairy product is brought about by the addition of a bacterial culture capable of producing lactic acid from lactose. The primary function of this culture is to produce sufficient lactic acid to cause coagulation of the caseinate system of skimmilk. A secondary function of the culture is the production of flavor compounds considered to be desirable in these products. The flavor compounds produced by the normal growth of citric acid fermenting organisms are water soluble, and are largely removed during washing of the Cottage cheese curd. Therefore, flavor compounds are normally added to the cheese …

The Influence Of Artificial Insemination In Three Midwestern States, Wendell Lee. Kucker Jan 1967

The Influence Of Artificial Insemination In Three Midwestern States, Wendell Lee. Kucker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Increased productivity of dairy cattle depends in part upon genetic changes brought about by select ion. Because of the long generation interval and low reproductive rate, genetic improvement in dairy cattle is slow. For this reason, the accuracy and effectiveness of selection of sires is of utmost importance. Selection of sires plays a major role in the genetic improvement of dairy cattle since a sire can leave many more descendants than a female. Consequently, the use of outstanding males is important in the genetic advancement of the dairy cattle population in the upper mid west as well as throughout the …

On The Nature Of Some Selenium Losses From Soils And Waters, Ghaleb Musa Abu-Erreish Jan 1967

On The Nature Of Some Selenium Losses From Soils And Waters, Ghaleb Musa Abu-Erreish

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Selenium is of interest to the animal nutritionists and to the biochemist from two standpoints. In some areas of the world it occurs in soils in excesses, and the plants growing in these soils contain levels of the element that are toxic to livestock that consume the plants. On the other hand, selenium appears to be essential to the well-being of certain animals, at least under some feeding regimens, and in a number of areas the soils produce feeds that are deficient in the element (48). In either case, an understanding of the cycling of selenium in nature is essential …

Inelastic Behavior Of Steel I-Beams With Hexagonal Web Cutouts, Teresa Chen Wang Jan 1967

Inelastic Behavior Of Steel I-Beams With Hexagonal Web Cutouts, Teresa Chen Wang
