Combining Spin-Tate Functions To Describe Eight-Electron Tetrahedral And Cubic Arrangements And The Use Of Ionic Functions In The Four-Electron Tetrahedral Cage, Edward G. Schwartz Jan 1968

Combining Spin-Tate Functions To Describe Eight-Electron Tetrahedral And Cubic Arrangements And The Use Of Ionic Functions In The Four-Electron Tetrahedral Cage, Edward G. Schwartz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Valence-bond theory (or the Reitler-London-Slater-Pauling theory) has been extensively applied to planar molecules and to nonresonating nonplanar structures. Recently, Mullaney made use of symmetry in polyhedral structures to determine how the spin-state functions may combine. This spin-state approach was applied to square, hexagon, tetrahedron, octahedron, and cubic configurations. The calculations indicated no bonding in the cube, octahedron, and tetrahedron; yet such configurations exist in nature. In arriving at the ground state energies for the various geometries, Mullaney assumed that a valance electron is associated with each atom. Multiple-exchange and transfer integrals were neglected. This thesis will investigate the methods and …

The Pollution Potential Of Feedlots Along The Main Stem Of The Big Sioux River, John Edward Foley Jan 1968

The Pollution Potential Of Feedlots Along The Main Stem Of The Big Sioux River, John Edward Foley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Modern technology is reshaping the world. Advances, accompanied by great changes, are being made in every facet of this nation's and the world's way of life. Every person, place, or object is affected to some degree by these technological advances. An area of endeavor receiving a great amount of benefit from twentieth-century science is agriculture. Farms in the United States have been lifted to levels of production and efficiency undreamed of not very long ago. But, as in the case of most technological advances, unraveling the old problems has brought about a new set of problems which are perhaps even …

Brook trout were introduced into the South Fork Yellow Bank River, an eastern South Dakota stream, on October 11, 1966. A supplemental brook trout plant was made on June 8, 1967. Survival for the initial plant from October, 1966 through October, 1967 was 2.4%. Survival for the supplemental plant from June, 1967 through October, 1967 was 21.0%. Trout from both plants took part in spawning activities during the fall of 1967. Average length of trout from the initial plant increased 9.8 cm during one year. Their average condition factor reached a peak in June, 1967 after being low throughout the …

Ecological Relationships Of Breeding Blue-Winged Teal To Prairie Potholes, Roderick C. Drewien Jan 1968

Ecological Relationships Of Breeding Blue-Winged Teal To Prairie Potholes, Roderick C. Drewien

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Ecology and behavior of breeding blue-winged teal (Anas discors) were studied in northeastern Day County, South Dakota in 1965 and 1966. Breeding pair use of the wetland habitat and importance of Type 1 ponds in the wetland complex were evaluated. Pair densities of 30.7 and 33.0 per square mile in 1965 and 1966, respectively, were above the 16-year average from 1950-66 and near maximum. Blue-winged teal comprised 46.7 percent of the waterfowl breeding population in 1965 and 51.7 percent in 1966. Number of water areas per square mile through mid-spring 1965 was comparable to the average for the 16-year period …

Optimum Plans For A 1600 Acre Ranch On Williams-Tetonka-Cavour Soil Association In Central South Dakota Including An Analysis Of Pasture Improvement Work Done By Ranchers, Herbert R. Allen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A profit maximizing linear programming model was used to arrive at optimum plans for a typical ranch in the Willimas-Tetonka-Cavour soil association are of central South Dakota. The typical ranch used for the analysis had 500 acres of cropland and 1056 acres of native grass. Low, medium and high levels of efficiency were assumed in grain crop and livestock production. Forage production was obtained from different management systems on tame grasses and native grasses. Tame grasses included brome-alfalfa, crested wheatgrass, Russian wild rye, and sudan grass. Native grass production was obtained from alternative management systems including renovated pasture, fertilized pasture, …

The Influence Of Zinc And Tryptophan On Polysome Stability And Growth Response Of Corn Seedlings, Anthony Unusa Salami Jan 1968

The Influence Of Zinc And Tryptophan On Polysome Stability And Growth Response Of Corn Seedlings, Anthony Unusa Salami

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Zinc-deficient corn plants were obtained by raising seedlings in nutrient solution without added zinc. In the absence of zinc, retarded growth was evident after 16 days of germination. Interveinal chlorosis of the leaves was observed on plants grown in this nutrient solution without added zinc. Substitution of tryptophan for zinc in the nutrient solution without added zinc. Substitution of tryptophan for zinc in the nutrient solution during the first 19-day growth period, completely corrected the symptom of retarded growth and the other symptoms of zinc deficiency. This optimal growth and tryptophan was accomplished even with a five-fold reduction of tissue …

An Investigation Of The Employment Of Multiple Objectives In Water Resources Planning, Robert Rehm Werner Jan 1968

An Investigation Of The Employment Of Multiple Objectives In Water Resources Planning, Robert Rehm Werner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A number of objectives in water resources development have been identified historically, but planning practice has adhered most closely to economic efficiency. A question of growing concern is whether or not the conscious inclusion of multiple objectives simultaneously in water resources planning can result in the formulation of plans closer to an optimum in the satisfaction of peoples’ total desires than does a plan which optimizes the objective of economic efficiency or other single objective. The purpose of this study was to determine if the explicit employment of multiple objectives in water resources planning represents a strengthening of capability to …

Optimum Movement Of Feeder Calves And Feed Grains Within South Dakota With Implications For Slaughter Plant Location, Valentine M. Heier Jan 1968

Optimum Movement Of Feeder Calves And Feed Grains Within South Dakota With Implications For Slaughter Plant Location, Valentine M. Heier

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The basic economic activity in South Dakota is agriculture. Therefore, it is essential to the economic position of the state that information is made available which can serve as a guide in developing the agricultural industries within the state. The purpose of this study is to provide such information to the cattle feeding and beef slaughtering industries. Livestock data indicate that a large proportion of the cattle produced in South Dakota is shipped out of the state for fattening and slaughter. Data also indicate that the state is an exporter of feed grains. It seems that if these feeder cattle …

The amount of highway construction is increasing every year. As a result, there is an ever increasing demand for mineral aggregates. Engineers classify these mineral aggregates as the smaller rocks which are composed of one or more minerals. In the state of California, between one-fifth and one-third of the 300 million dollars spent annually for the construction of highways is used for the procurement and placement of aggregates. (l) This cost is steadily increasing because of the depletion of the more accessible and higher quality aggregates. Because the traffic volume and loads are steadily increasing, the Interstate system as well …

Lipid Analysis Of Maturing Crambe Seed, Dwayne Walter Rehfeld Jan 1968

Lipid Analysis Of Maturing Crambe Seed, Dwayne Walter Rehfeld

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For several years, plants have been screened in the search for compounds that might have a potential use in industry and which presently have no other suitable source (1). During a screening study, Mikolajczak et al. (2) found that crambe (common name for Crambe abyssinica) contained a high percentage of erucic acid. Erucic acid has many potential industrial uses and is currently being obtained from imported rapeseed (J). Because there is presently no suitable domestic source of erucic acid, crambe is a potential new crop for the United States. Field studies of crambe have shown that the seeds tend to …

Ultrasonic Evaluation Of Swine, Lowell M. Anderson Jan 1968

Ultrasonic Evaluation Of Swine, Lowell M. Anderson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Current meat consumption patterns and competition from other meats and meat substitutes present a challenge to today’s pork producer to produce a higher quality product with a larger lean to fat ratio. One avenue or approach toward meeting the challenge could be through selection of superior breeding animals. Thus the major challenge at the producer level is that of accurately determining the meatiest individuals for replacements. Historically man has relied upon the visual appraisal, however, few of the live animal. Therefore, the majority must depend upon selection aids. Actual carcass cut-out data can be obtained, but this results in the …

An Analysis Of Stephen Leacock's Treatment Of The Detective Story, Beverly Lamb

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

On any list of Canadian writers, Stephen Leacock's name would have to appear at the top because of his achievements in humor. He has won for himself a unique place in the Canadian scene as economist, historian, critic, essayist, lecturer, and teacher, but above all, as a writer and speaker who is the incarnation of humor. Born in the south of England, at Swanmoor in Hampshire on December 30, 1869, he moved, in 1876, with his family to Canada. For some time he had a tutor for his schooling but when his father left the family, Stephen was sent to …
