General Anglo-Russian Relations 1903-1908., Catherine Archer Little

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Great Britain has proved herself sufficient to counteract Russia in her Balkan enterprises on more than one occasion. In mentioning the War for Greek Independence, we must remember that political aspirations of the Tsars and a series of wars had made the Russians and the Turks traditional enemies and that Great Britain entered the war in order that Russia might not unduly profit at the expense of the Turks. In 1841, Great Britain was in a great way responsible for the Treaty of the Straits which closed the Dardanelles in time of war. In 1853, Turkey and Russia again went …

Land Laws Of Kentucky., Lillian Logan Jan 1930

Land Laws Of Kentucky., Lillian Logan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis follows the growth of settlement in Kentucky from the time of her birth as a state in seventeen hundred and ninety-two, to the year eighteen hundred and thirty-seven, a period during which all of the land within her borders was opened for settlement. It does not pretend to relate a complete story of the march across Kentucky, but only to tell the important stages as revealed by the laws governing appropriating of land. There were no Indian towns or villages within the boundaries of what is now Kentucky, but certain tribes had definite hunting grounds. The Cherokees were …

The Mississippi Question And The Problem Of Statehood In Kentucky., Harold J. Stipe Jan 1929

The Mississippi Question And The Problem Of Statehood In Kentucky., Harold J. Stipe

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The history of new state movements in America is always an absorbing study; the character of the settlers and the compelling factors that motivate them are revealed with startling clarity as the reader turns the pages back into the annals of the period. The history of America has been, in a large degree, says Frederick J. Turner, "the history of the colonization of the Great West. The existence of an area of free land, its continuous recession, and the advance of American settlement westward, explain American development." In no state was the influence of the frontier advance upon political development …

The Founding Of The Brookings Register, Neva Whaley Jan 1929

The Founding Of The Brookings Register, Neva Whaley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Thus in this “History of the Brookings Register,” I am producing an effect. This effect had to have a cause. This cause was the development and success of the paper, which is in turn is the effect of there being some cause for its development. That cause is the town of Brookings. What I have been trying to say is that without the town of Brookings there would have been no Brookings Register. Does it not seem logical then, to take up a brief history of the found and settlement of this town?

Postal Communication In The South-West, 1789-1813., Mary Angela Sweeney Jan 1928

Postal Communication In The South-West, 1789-1813., Mary Angela Sweeney

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In every civilization of which any record has been preserved, there is known to have been some organized plan for maintaining communication by couriers who were either post runners or riders mounted. The relaying of these couriers was an obvious expedient for securing greater speed. The term post is derived from positus of the verb pono. The place where the relay was effected was marked by a "post." Hence post road, post office. The colonists brought to America no ideas of postal service from England. The General Post Office of Great Britain was no t established until 1657 and the …

The Education Of The Natural Man : A Study In The Political Philosophy Of J. J. Rousseau., Esther E. Mason Jan 1927

The Education Of The Natural Man : A Study In The Political Philosophy Of J. J. Rousseau., Esther E. Mason

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In these, the opening words of Emile, Rousseau admits us to a knowledge of one of the principles of his thought. Everything is good, he thinks, as it comes from the hand of God. It becomes bad through the interference of man with the work of nature. We might assume, then, that the interference is bad, and that man was better, more virtuous, before he was interfered with, or educated. And as a matter of fact, Rousseau found some such answer to the problem when it first presented itself to him. In Emile he finds another and more practical solution, …

Reconstruction In Kentucky., John W. Manning Jan 1926

Reconstruction In Kentucky., John W. Manning

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Reconstruction began in Kentucky somewhat sooner than in the States south of the Blue Grass Commonwealth. As soon as the invading Confederate army withdrew from the State in 1862, loyal Kentuckians began to prepare for peaceful pursuits and to restore the State, as best they could, to somewhat the position it occupied before the war between the states. Of course it was impossible to remake the State as it was before the struggle, but at least the civil authority could be restored, and the State prepared for the reign of peace. The dates 1862 to 1870 have been selected as …

The Influence Of Sixteenth Century Voyages On Elizabethan Literature., Elizabeth Nugent Jan 1926

The Influence Of Sixteenth Century Voyages On Elizabethan Literature., Elizabeth Nugent

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It is the purpose of this thesis to show what influence the sixteenth century voyagers had on the Elizabethan writers. For expediency, we have divided these voyages into two classes: namely, the early, from Columbus, 1492, to Vasca de Gama, 1498; and the later voyagers from de Gama to Captain Smith, 1603. We find that commerce instigated nearly all early navigation. The Turks having cut off the Mediterranean trade route with India in 1453, it was necessary to find another water route to this country. As a direct consequence, Columbus discovered the West Indies in 1492 and claimed the new …

Sir Richard Steele, Reformer., H. Carter Davidson Jan 1926

Sir Richard Steele, Reformer., H. Carter Davidson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Because the critics of the eighteenth century admired form more than thought, Sir Richard Steele has been sadly neglected and all honours have been heaped upon his literary partner, Joseph Addison. Slowly the readers of the twentieth century are beginning to realize that Steele had all the originality, while Addison had nothing but polish. It is to present a few of the astoundingly original and influential ideas of Steele that this paper has been written. To the best of my knowledge after some extended search, the reforms of Richard Steele have not been treated, at least not in the manner …

The Kentucky Mountains During The Civil War., Artus James 1891-1979 May 1925

The Kentucky Mountains During The Civil War., Artus James 1891-1979

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the early days of 1861, Kentucky, torn between her allegiance to the federal government and her sympathy for the South, with her citizenry so divided that hardly a family in the state stood united, vainly endeavored to carve out for herself a niche of security in the midst of the chaos of war. Continuing her position as one of the United States, she yet attempted to assume a position of neutrality towards the two belligerents--the United States of which she was a part and the Confederacy.

The Railroads Of Kentucky 1861-1865., Jessie Munday

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In studying and teaching history, I have been convinced that the transportation facilities of a country have helped or hindered its political, industrial and commercial development. In this thesis, I have endeavored to show the value of the railroads of Kentucky during the political conflict known as the Civil War. I have consulted a number of historical records and have tried to select from them, the most convincing proofs. Articles consulted are listed in the bibliography at the close. This thesis was prepared in connection with a seminar course at the University of Louisville, on “Kentucky during the Civil War.” …

John Donne The Preacher., Dick Houston Hall Jan 1925

John Donne The Preacher., Dick Houston Hall

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the year 1573 when Shakespeare and Marlowe were already boys of nine, Chapman in adolescence, Spenser, Lyly and Richard Hooker men of twenty, John Donne, then important to only a few but destined to the company of royalty, was born. Walton says, in his very excellent but inadequate and often inaccurate “Lives of Dr. John Donne, etc.,” that his father as descended “from an ancient and worth family in Wales.” Gosse, however, calls this simply “a pious wish” because nothing is known of his father’s parentage. He was prosperous iron merchant of London, who died in 1576 leaving his …
