A Comparison Of Left And Right Brain Hemisphere Processing And Brain Related Sex Differences In Kindergarten Children, Margaret K. Hickerson
A Comparison Of Left And Right Brain Hemisphere Processing And Brain Related Sex Differences In Kindergarten Children, Margaret K. Hickerson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the study was to (1) compare the performance on left and right hemisphere processing tasks of male and female kindergarten students from three instructional approaches, and (2) to determine the effectiveness of an educational application: the use of "hands-on" inquiry-oriented science activities designed to engage the right hemisphere in improving left and right hemisphere processing. Subjects included 79 students enrolled in intact kindergarten classes representative of three instructional approaches: (1) the Traditional-Conventional Instructional Approach, (2) the Montessori Approach, and (3) the Open Activity-Centered Instructional Approach. The students were randomly assigned for treatment to experimental and control groups. …
An Analysis Of Student Evaluation Of Selected Post Secondary Faculty Based On Student Perceptions Of The Utilization Of The Evaluation, Ann N. James
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine whether students' evaluation of faculty was affected by their perception of the utilization of the evaluation results. Three other variables were also investigated: faculty status, subject area of the class, and sex of the instructor. Data for this study were collected from twenty classes taught by ten instructors at a private post-secondary institution in East Tennessee. Both instructors and their classes were randomly selected. The total number of students surveyed was 303. Two classes for each of the ten instructors were administered the evaluation instrument by the investigator. The control group was …
Determining Potential Herbage Production In The Sahel, John Curtis Anderson
Determining Potential Herbage Production In The Sahel, John Curtis Anderson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The study illustrates a method to estimate the distribution of potential herbage production over large areas of the African Sahel under varying climatic conditions. The exploration of the method began after consulting with Mr. Albert A. Klingebiel. As a result of the discussion the study is determined to be practicable based upon the following three points: 1) potential herbage production is not known for large areas of the Sahel; 2) the spatial distribution of potential, herbage production varies with differences in soil characteristics and in amount of precipitation; and 3) potential herbage production is known for the soil associations of …
Rainbow Trout (Salmo Gairdneri) Cage Culture And Primary Production In Eastern South Dakota Dugout Ponds, Michael John Roell
Rainbow Trout (Salmo Gairdneri) Cage Culture And Primary Production In Eastern South Dakota Dugout Ponds, Michael John Roell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) reared in 1 m³ cages in a South Dakota dugout pond grew and survived as well or better than most cage-cultured rainbow trout reported in the literature. Significant differences (P≤0.01) in mean length, weight, and food conversion, and similarity in relative weight between trout fed 2 and 4% of body weight daily, indicated that the optimum feeding rate was near 3% for this size range (35=100g). Daily rations based on fish size and water temperature need to be developed for trout reared in a lentic environment. The high cost of fingerlings was the limiting factor in …
Waterfowl Pair And Brood Use Of Dug Brood Complexes In East-Central South Dakota, Beth A. Giron Pendleton
Waterfowl Pair And Brood Use Of Dug Brood Complexes In East-Central South Dakota, Beth A. Giron Pendleton
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Modification of wetlands has been a frequently employed management technique to enhance habitat for waterfowl and other wetland wildlife. One type of excavation in wetland basins is the dug brood complex; an interconnected system of pond units, channels, and islands, primarily created to provide waterfowl brood rearing habitat during drought. In 1981-82, a study was conducted to evaluate waterfowl pair and brood use of 8 pairs of Class IV wetlands in east-central South Dakota. Each pair consisted of a wetland with a dug brood complex (modified) and an unmodified basin of comparable basin size. Under drought conditions in 1981, both …

Host Range, Pathogenicity And Effects Of Soil Temperature On A Botswana Isolate Of Meloidogyne Incognita, Baone Cynthia Busang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Root-knot nematodes, Meloidogyne spp. have long been a problem on vegetable crops in Botswana. Loss of yield and reduction in quality and marketability of vegetable crops such as beet (Beta vulgaris L.) and carrot (Dancus carota L.) have been reported from school and home gardens as well as from commercial gardens in the country (Nilsson, personal communication). Other major vegetable crops including tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) and spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) are also damaged, but the damage is often overlooked unless plants are pulled and roots examined. Because of a lack of nematologists and plant pathologists, the problem was neglected …
Market Structure And Conduct Of The South Dakota Beef Industry, Annette Lorraine Clauson
Market Structure And Conduct Of The South Dakota Beef Industry, Annette Lorraine Clauson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
While the South Dakota livestock producer desires the best price for his product the day it is sold, he may not always receive it. Information about alternative marketing methods and prices being paid at alternative markets is not always available. If available, this information could lead to more efficient marketing. For example, just a one dollar annual increase in market price of livestock would increase the value of commercial slaughter in South Dakota by approximately $8 million/year. An increase like this would not only benefit the livestock producer; but could result in significant impacts on the economic well-being of the …
Rhetorical Theory In Homiletics Training At The St. Sophia Ukrainian Orthodox Seminary, Laurie L. Haleta
Rhetorical Theory In Homiletics Training At The St. Sophia Ukrainian Orthodox Seminary, Laurie L. Haleta
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The study of Eastern Orthodox rhetorical training of the clergy has been somewhat confined, due in part, to the broad distribution of the Orthodox faith which includes Greek Orthodox, Russian Orthodox, and Ukrainian Orthodox. The limited scope of research appears to justify further investigation of rhetorical· training offered to clergy of specific denominations. Therefore, a study of the rhetorical components in the homiletic training offered Ukrainian Orthodox clergy seems warranted. In undertaking this study, the investigator was motivated in part by her father-in-law, Bishop Mykola Haleta, who is a priest in the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Exposure to the Ukrainian Orthodox …
The Adjustment Of Foreign Students At Sdsu, Mansour Haghighatian
The Adjustment Of Foreign Students At Sdsu, Mansour Haghighatian
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A visible and significant subset of the student body of many U.S. institutions of higher education is its foreign student population. These students come from a wide variety of cultures and as Skinner & Hendricks have put it, "Despite the variety of views of foreign students Americans may have, Americans have a common feeling that the foreign student is somehow different, a 'they' and not a 'we' ". The foreign student is different because he/she is from culture that has different values, traditions and different codes of behavior and guides for conduct. Meleis asserts that ''whereas American business-people need know …

The Chinese Radio And Television Stations In The United States : A Historical Exploration, Lin Liang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Historically, Chinese immigration to the United States began in around 1850, even though immigration statistics in the United States showed that forty Chinese had arrived before the news reached Hong Kong that gold had been discovered in California in the spring of 1848. As the gold rush tapered off in the early 1860s, the Chinese soon filled in as general laborers, domestic servants, cooks, and gardeners. However, they found opposition from the white laborers in the mining camps as early as 1852, and they were denied eligibility for citizenship. The need to be aided and protected was great. All of …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis is to identify, analyze, and explain the developments of American geography and geographic education as they are indicated by the publication trends of articles appearing in the Journal of Geography from 1902 to 1982. As Herbert M. Eder noted in 1964, "the [geographical] periodical is a capsule display of the kind and quality of geographers and geography of a country and an era. Thus, the primary step in understanding the history of geography of a nation is to know periodical literature." A concise study of the Journal of Geography, the major official publication of the …

The Inventional Components Of Emil Loriks' Agrarian Farmers Union Rhetoric, 1934-1938, Elizabeth Everson Williams
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
There is precedent in the speech discipline for rhetorical studies of individual communicators. National political leaders have long been the topic of rhetorical study. The purpose of this inquiry is to determine the effectiveness and effect of Emil Loriks' agrarian Farmers Union rhetoric from 1934 to 1938, during the time he was SDFU president. Effectiveness is here defined as how well the persuader's rhetorical choices match established rhetorical criteria. Effect refers to both the immediate and long-range response to rhetoric. To accomplish the stated purpose, an attempt was made to answer the following questions: 1. What was the historical, economic …

An Examination Of Prostaglandins As Causative Agents In Pine Needle (Pinus Ponderosa) Abortion, Daniel P. Shue
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Cow and calf losses due to pine needle abortion in cattle grazing foothill ranges of ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) continue to cause managerial and economic problems for ranchers in South Dakota, Colorado, Idaho, California, Montana and many areas throughout Canada. Because of its overall economic significance, investigators have been attempting to isolate and characterize causative agents of pine needle abortion. To date, a large number of pine needle constituents have been shown to possess abortifacient capabilities. In addition to actual pine needles, it appears that several other undefined factors may be associated with, and (or) predispose animals to, pine needle …

The Sunflower Moth And Its Impact On Cultivated Sunflowers In Eastern South Dakota, Tom A. Royer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Cultivated sunflowers (Helianthus annuus L.) are an increasingly important cash crop in the agricultural economy of South Dakota. Sunflower hectarage increased in South Dakota from an estimated 59,711 ha. In 1975 to approximately 250,900 ha. In 1982 (Anonymous, 1982). Most of the sunflowers are grown in the eastern half of South Dakota, and a large percentage is growing the northeastern quarter of the state (Figure 1). The expanding hectarage has necessitated an increase in insecticide application to control the several insect pests associated with them. It is estimated that 181,900 ha. Were treated with insecticides in 1982 (D. Walgenbach, South …

Health Knowledge Assessment Of College Freshmen Educated In South Dakota K-12, Nadeen E. Lunde
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Nothing in life is so taken for granted when possessed, or so missed when lost, as is health. Therefore, it is essential to possess basic facts if each individual is to take advantage of medical science advances, protect himself against quackery, and obtain an optimum level of health. Health education is recognized by leading educators as of vital importance in educating our youth, but health education has not established itself in a way comparable to other subjects. Kilander noted this fact as early as 1937, and yet, 46 years later, South Dakota's health education programs have not been established. Many …

A Case Study In Establishing An In-House Polling Operation For A South Dakota Political Campaign, Jeff Brockelsby
A Case Study In Establishing An In-House Polling Operation For A South Dakota Political Campaign, Jeff Brockelsby
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Evaluating what voters are thinking and deciding how best to communicate with them are critical to a political candidate planning a campaign strategy. Until recently, a candidate relied on his own instincts and those of his advisers to evaluate what people thought about a particular issue or person and to determine the most effective way of presenting campaign messages. Political polling has changed this. Political scientist Paul Van Riper said in Handbook of Practical Politics "the rapidly increasing utilization of social science techniques to help determine political strategy is one of the most important of the recent trends in American …
Perceptual Regions Of Minnesota, John L. Faundeen
Perceptual Regions Of Minnesota, John L. Faundeen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Economists, demographers, politicians, recreationalists, and others have divided the state of Minnesota into many different regions. In so doing, each claim to represent a meaningful division of state districts based upon their own particular viewpoint, need, or bias. Whether these regions are logically derived or merely delineated for purposes of convenience can, however, be questioned. Regardless of how the divisions carne about, they do, to a degree, represent an abstraction of space. Whether or not the average Minnesotan agrees with, or can even relate to, such abstractions is debatable. The way in which residents perceive the state and mentally delineate …
