Electrophoretic, Morphometric, And Meristic Comparisons Of Walleye Broodstock In South Dakota, Chantel M. Waltner Jan 1988

Electrophoretic, Morphometric, And Meristic Comparisons Of Walleye Broodstock In South Dakota, Chantel M. Waltner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Electrophoretic and morphological variability among walleyes collected from three upper Missouri River tributaries and a glacial lake in South Dakota was investigated, and an upper Mississippi River stock was electrophoretically compared to the South Dakota stocks. Allele frequencies of two (MDH-3, GMP-3) of the twenty-one loci examined differed significantly (P<0. 05) between South Dakota and Mississippi River walleyes. Contingency chi-square tests of allele frequencies showed homogeneity among walleyes from the Missouri River tributaries, and significant (P<0.001) heterogeneity (P<0.001) at the GMP-3 locus between Missouri River and glacial lake stocks. A dendogram derived from Nei unbiased genetic identity values produced separate branchings for the South Dakota and Mississippi River walleyes. All four walleye stocks in South Dakota were morphologically variable, although no one character could be used as a diagnostic tool to separate the stocks visually. Discriminant function analysis of eight of the most powerful discriminatory characters was successful in correctly classifying walleyes by origin with 83-97% accuracy.

Iris Murdoch's "Learning Protagonists" : Toward Contingency, Responsibility And Reality, Patrice J. Coleman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For over thirty years Iris Murdoch has continuously provided entertaining and thought-provoking novels. This prolific Irish-born English novelist has also sparked contention and controversy. She is accused of overtly manipulating her characters, placing them in extreme and implausible situations, sacrificing the realism which she admires and espouses. The world of literary criticism remains divided regarding their evaluation of Murdoch's intentions and achievements. While some steadfastly deny her a place among writers of the first rank, others proclaim her the greatest author writing in England today. Because she was born in Dublin and raised and educated in. London, both Ireland and …

Response Of Oat To Chloride Fertilization, Paul E. Gaspar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Several studies conducted in South Dakota have shown significant yield increases in wheat and barley due to chloride (Cl) fertilization. The effects of Cl on oat were evaluated in the greenhouse and two field experiments. Five cultivars and 3 KC1 fertilizer levels (0, 58, and 117 Kg ha-1) were tested in a factorial arrangement. In a second experiment, five N fertilizer levels (0, 34, 68, 102, 136 kg ha-1) and 2 KC1 fertilizer levels (0 and 135 kg ha-1) on oat (Benson) were tested in a factorial arrangement. The greenhouse study had 4 levels of Cl (0, 10, 20, and …

This study investigated the extent to which the structural differentiation and the technology of private industry organizations were related to employee fringe benefits in South Dakota. This was accomplished through the development and testing of a theoretical framework and model which represented the modification and synthesis of Max Weber's theory of bureaucracy and Peter Blau's theory of structural differentiation. Using a mailed questionnaire, data were obtained on measures of structural differentiation, technology, and employee fringe benefits from a sample of the population of all private industry organizations in South Dakota which had 10 or more employees. Rhetorical Analysis Of Federico Fellini's Film La Strada, Randall Scott Hanzen Jan 1988

Rhetorical Analysis Of Federico Fellini's Film La Strada, Randall Scott Hanzen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

One of the problems faced by critics in the past was a lack of critical resources that would allow for viewing a film as more than just moving pictures. Certainly, it would be difficult to understand or appreciate Fellini's use of the spiritual and metaphysical realms of reality if a critic did not have a means for such analysis. This writer believes that a rhetorical analysis serves as that means to the interpretive end. This study seeks to shed light on Fellini's definition of man's reality through its rhetorical analysis. Noted philosopher of rhetoric Kenneth Burke proclaims that a "rhetorical …

Subsoil Nutrient Levels, Soil Genesis, And Soil Classification In Selected Northeastern (Mlra 102a) South Dakota Soils, Kent Evert Cooley Jan 1988

Subsoil Nutrient Levels, Soil Genesis, And Soil Classification In Selected Northeastern (Mlra 102a) South Dakota Soils, Kent Evert Cooley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Major Land Resource Area (MLRA) 102A is predominantly used for agricultural purposes with most of the acreage utilized for small grain and row crop production. Much of the area's fertility status has been studied and related to soil classification. Information is needed on the subsoil and parent material nutrient reserves of the soils in this region. With time, money, and qualified personnel as important constraints to agricultural development, agrotechnology transfer is crucial for the short term solutions to agricultural problems in South Dakota. Site-specific research is time consuming and expensive. With decreasing government and private funding, South Dakota does not …

The recent growth of the field of digital signal processing has spurred research into many new methods of data handling. One of the topics that has received some attention during the past few years is the area of median filtering. Median filtering seems to be well suited to eliminating spike noise in communications signals and is also used in image processing to sharpen the outline of an image. The basic terminology used to describe the median filtering process is given below. That section is followed by a brief explanation of the approach to median filtering used in this project. The …

Serum Progesterone Levels As A Means To Study Reproductive Function In Female Lethal Yellow Mice (Ay/A; C57bl/6j), Jon Andrew Gonsor

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research concentrated on the reproductive problem associated with the Ay. Granholm and Breck reported that lethal yellow females never produced more than three litters when put into production at puberty. Ay/a females are as reproductively efficient as their a/a littermates at a young age. Ay/a females progressively become obese and reproductively senescent beyond the age of 120 days. The obese Ay/a females beyond 120 days exhibit lower uterine weights and depressed ovulation. Upon treatment with exogenous pituitary gonadotropins, follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (IH), the reproductively senescent AY/S! females' ovulatory rates were restored to near control levels. …

Reforms Of The U.S. Banking System, Monica Shun-Oi Lun Jan 1988

Reforms Of The U.S. Banking System, Monica Shun-Oi Lun

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There are a number of payments systems in the U.S. These include Fedwire, Clearing House Interbank Payments System (CHIPS) and Automated Clearing House (ACH). Although the Federal Reserve administers only Fedwire and ACH, it might also have to rescue CHIPS as a creditor of last resort. There have been concerns that some of the procedures adopted by these payments systems could impose risks on the systems. The first concern is the credit risk that these systems assume by allowing receivers to get funds immediately while senders can settle the net differences until the end of the day at no cost …
