Exploring Influencing Factors On The Adoption Of Non-Pharmaceutical Interventions During Pandemics: Covid-19 As An Example., Ahmed Abdulmohsen I Alobaydullah
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Background: Pandemics are associated with loss of life, hospitalizations, and disruption to people’s social and economic lives. As the 2019 pandemic illustrates, COVID-19 can be prevented by pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs). Recommended measures such as wearing a mask, washing hands, social distancing, and self-quarantine have been proven to curb the spread of the coronavirus. Identifying the factors associated with adherence to NPIs is the first step in understanding which levers of change to pull when designing health promotion interventions such as health communication campaigns. This dissertation explores these factors and proposes a health communication framework during pandemics. Research Questions: …
Porphyromonas Gingivalis Inactivates Anti-Viral Immunity At The Oral And Respiratory Epithelium., Carlos J. Rodriguez Hernandez
Porphyromonas Gingivalis Inactivates Anti-Viral Immunity At The Oral And Respiratory Epithelium., Carlos J. Rodriguez Hernandez
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The host microbiome plays an important role in fine-tuning host immune responses in a manner that ultimately impacts outcomes in viral infection. Symbiotic relationships between commensal bacteria and host epithelial and immune cells prime interferon (IFN) signaling, modulating the nature and intensity of the immune response to viral infections at mucosal barrier surfaces. In this doctoral thesis, I explore how dysbiotic shifts in the oral microbial communities modulate antiviral responses at the oral and oro-respiratory mucosal barriers. I identified that in response to a viral challenge, gingival epithelial cells (GECs) preferentially induced type III IFNs (IFN-λ), a newly described family …
Using Dynamic Schemas For Query Optimization Over Json Data., Tomas Felipe Llano-Rios
Using Dynamic Schemas For Query Optimization Over Json Data., Tomas Felipe Llano-Rios
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Query optimization in document stores has traditionally relied on rule-based approaches, but recent research advocates for a shift towards cost-based optimization. However, this transition is hindered by the fragmented nature of existing approaches, stemming from the early development stage of cost-based query optimization for document databases. A key challenge lies in the absence of a standardized query language and semantics, exacerbated by the diverse and schema-less nature of JSON document collections. To tackle these challenges, the literature has proposed dynamic schemas, primarily utilized at parsing time. However, these schemas lack a formal foundation that describes meaningful semantics for query optimization. …
Origin Stories., Danielle Deeley
Origin Stories., Danielle Deeley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is an investigation into the Peruvian pre-Columbian collection at the Speed Art Museum in Louisville, Kentucky. The Speed Art Museum acquired this collection in 1934 and it has largely remained unresearched for nearly a century after acquisition into the museum’s collection. This investigation is not an attempt to make broad characterizations of pre-Columbian ceramics. Nor is its goal to fill in all the gaps of the collection’s history. Instead, this thesis follows the evidence the collection presents: the physical attributes of the ceramics, the donor’s history, U.S. history, and information from the collection file provided by the Speed …

With 7.8 billion people in the world, there is a vast array of races, cultures, and languages creating an incredibly diverse globe. Along with the diverse population, we have a world that is also incredibly interconnected. As businesses begin crisscrossing the globe due to global corporations, and advancements in technology we find it more important than ever before to understand all people groups across the globe. So, what does this mean for education in the United States as we become more interconnected with countries all over? Our students need to be better prepared with global competencies that will allow them …
Control Of Muscle Activation In The Lower Limbs During Leg Cycling After A Motor Complete Spinal Cord Injury., Jae Fish
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Spinal cord injury (SCI) affects the central nervous system (CNS) causing muscle paralysis and autonomic dysfunctions throughout the body. Muscle activation after SCI is essential to facilitate functional recovery and may be produced via remaining input from supraspinal centers, the central pattern generators (CPG), or muscle stretch reflex responses. In this study, assisted leg cycling is evaluated as a tool to identify the neural structure control of muscle activation after motor complete SCI. Eight individuals with a complete or sensory incomplete SCI between C2 and T5 participated in the study. Participants completed leg cycling trials with and without supraspinal intention …
The Impact Of Cognitive Coaching On Educator Identity And Teamwork Through Classroom Observation As Perceived By Teachers And Administrators., Carrie Elizabeth Wade
The Impact Of Cognitive Coaching On Educator Identity And Teamwork Through Classroom Observation As Perceived By Teachers And Administrators., Carrie Elizabeth Wade
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Classroom observations are meant to help teachers improve their instructional practice and improve learning outcomes for students. But for many educators, traditional, in-person classroom observations can not only be difficult to arrange but difficult to truly gain valuable feedback from when teachers can’t see what was happening in the moment (Drago-Severson & Blum-Stefano, 2017). Teaching and leading in an environment characterized by a constant state of change is more likely to cause stress and negative feelings when the employees care deeply about the outcome (Wisse & Sleebos, 2016). Cognitive Coaching methods, applied to classroom observations, aim to reduce focus on …

Emergency Vehicle Prioritization In Connected And Autonomous Traffic., Mohamadreza Haghani
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Reducing the response time of emergency vehicles (EV) is highly important due to the relationship between response time and fatality rate. Emerging technologies can help reduce response time by enhancing EV prioritization. On the other hand, EV prioritization can negatively impact general traffic especially in cross streets of signalized intersections. In this research, three main objectives were followed. Firstly, creation and dissipation of EVP disruption on arterial cross streets was studied to recommend solutions to prevent this disruption. Secondly, lane-changing and stopping behavior of CAVs were studied in EV prioritization to identify the best lane-changing behavior through minimizing delay. Thirdly, …
A Design Science And Implementation Framework For Studying Interruptions And Its Application In A Dental Clinic., Carsten Ziegler
A Design Science And Implementation Framework For Studying Interruptions And Its Application In A Dental Clinic., Carsten Ziegler
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Interruptions during dental treatment are frequent, and often have detrimental effects on quality of care, patient safety and processing times, and have an impact on provider satisfaction and performance. Interruptions can significantly increase the cognitive load on dental providers, making it hard for them to concentrate on complex procedures. Frequent interruptions also disrupt the workflow in general, leading to delays in treatment, which can reduce the overall throughput of a clinic. Unfortunately, there is no comprehensive approach to collectively (i) analyze interruptions in dental healthcare, (ii) design an intervention, and (iii) implement and sustain it. This research proposes a comprehensive …

“I’M Going To Have To Be Far More Prepared": A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Teacher Candidate Discussion And Projected Teaching Of Literature., Taylor Rose-Dougherty
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative dissertation study contributes to conversations around the practical knowledge gap–professional behaviors or practices which are underdeveloped in available research–between critically oriented literacy teacher preparation programs and praxis in early career classrooms. Critical literacy, or engaging with major texts, discourses, and ways of communicating in a culture or context, attempts to locate and disrupt power imbalances and encourage justice-oriented activism. While teacher candidates (TCs) often practice critical literacy in their training programs, they often struggle to facilitate critical literacy instruction in their own classrooms. Using Thematic Analysis (TA) for data reduction and Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) for data analysis, …

Are The Good Times Really Over For Good? American Political Nostalgia's Relationship With Rurality, Authoritarianism, And Victimhood., Chancellor R. Peterson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
There are many discussions about why rural and urban Americans exhibit different attitudes about politics, partisan loyalties, and ideologies. Some of these differences can be explained by psychological processes and traits. People act differently and influence (or are influenced by) political processes differently based on their perceptions of and emotions regarding the past, present, and future states of the world. The same is true with rural and urban Americans. This research will investigate the effects of one potent emotion on political attitudes: nostalgia. Prior research has indicated that political nostalgia can be harnessed as a strong political tool. This thesis …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The American bison is an iconic mammal that lives in large social herds and is considered a threatened species. Little is known about how bison make decisions as a group, whether through despotic individuals or group consensus. In this dissertation, I researched the mechanisms bison use to make herd movement decisions in 3 herds in the United States. In chapter one I examined the number of bison that participated in voting events for herd movement decisions and whether the final movement decision matched the direction with the most votes. Bison herd movements did match the direction with the most adult …

W.E. B. Du Bois And Audre Lorde's Pan-African Development: Remedies For The Problem Of Othering., J.E. Young
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
W.E.B. Du Bois and Audre Lorde’s Pan-African Development: Remedies for the Problem of Othering is an Afrocentric reading of Black U.S intellectual traditions of self-definition from the late 19th to early 21st century. I argue that W.E.B. Du Bois and Audre Lorde adhered to two major Afrocentric principles: balance and justice. At the root of these principles is the understanding that binaries constructed as oppositions create unjust hierarchies. My theoretical approach is attuned to the distinct ways that Du Bois and Lorde communicated the importance of self-definition and Africana spirituality in relationship to other Black intellectual thought. Placing them in …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation consists of a creative project, The Impersonation Artist: A Novel, and a critical afterword, “Displacement and Dissent in Fiction and Art.” On a narrative level, The Impersonation Artist engages the question of how, and if, participatory art can reveal and intervene in oppressive conditions. The novel employs a stylistic methodology in which the use of multiple narrators and narrative fragmentation formally gestures toward the complex dilemma of how artists might intervene in contemporary problems in the face of conflicting ideologies and ever increasing precarity. The novel follows three characters: an environmental activist; a young man veering towards …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In 2018, Black Americans represented 42% of new HIV diagnoses, despite comprising only 13% of the population. Moreover, Black men accounted for three-quarters of new HIV cases in 2016, with Black gay/bisexual men contributing to the majority of incidence among Black Americans. Existing literature suggests that individual behavior alone cannot explain these racial inequities in HIV rates. This study aims to explore the role of the criminal legal system (CLS) as a structural determinant of health, given its historical racial implications that disproportionately affect Black Americans. Additionally, the study examines masculinity’s influence as a predictor of risky sexual behavior. This …
