Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The economy of much of our Great Plains region depends upon the efficiency with which we use its most important crop--grass. Since over 75 percent of the feed of all beef cattle and sheep is grass, anything that can be done to increase its value as feed for livestock is of tremendous importance to the wealth and economy of the nation. In addition to the importance of grass to the Great Plains regions, it is playing an ever more important role in the economy of the southeastern states and even in the corn belt. With higher prices for livestock and …

A large percentage of dairy cattle sold in South Dakota and surrounding territory, whether for breeding purpose or commercial production, are evaluated primarily on the basis of their type. …

In an attempt to utilize the full growing season and obtain greater yields , many farmers are planting late varieties of corn which require a longer growing season than often exists in South Dakota. Such late maturing varieties are more likely to be damaged by frost than the earlier maturing ones. Since 1940, early frosts have resulted in large amounts of soft corn in eastern South Dakota in five out of eleven years.

The selection for certain inherited characteristics war practiced approximately 2000 years before the Christian Era. Jacob (Genesis 30:28-43) was given all the speckled cattle in his master’s herd for being herdsman. In a few years, by selecting for the spotting factor, only speckled cattle remained in the herd. Selection was the first tool for segregating definite characteristics. As a means of more rapid improvement artificial insemination was practiced by an Arabian chieftain as early as 1322 A. D. (35). Since 1322 these crude methods of transferring semen have been perfected until approximately four million cows were inseminated in the United …

A Study Of Bovine Noseprints, Morris W. Hirsch

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The breed association are continuously confronted with the problem of properly identifying animals for registration. The method of identifying the broken color breeds, such as Guernseys, Holsteins, and Ayrshires, is by a sketch of the color patterns which accompanies the application for registration. This has been fairly successful, but due to the poor drawing ability of the applicant approximately twenty percent of animal markings and sketch do not resemble each other to establish identity. The solid colored breeds use brands or tattoo marks in the ear which are not entirely satisfactory since these are artificial and can be applied in …

Beef Production On Irrigated Pastures In South Dakota, John L. Leibel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

At present about 68,000 acres of land are under irrigation in South Dakota but plans have been developed for a vast expansion of irrigation in the state. When the new projects, planned by the Bureau of Reclamation, are completed South Dakota will have over one million acres of irrigable land. This new development will be in a climatic zone somewhat different that that in which other projects have been developed and consequently may require modifications in production programs and crop rotations.

An Economic Study Of Specialized Swine Production Possibilities In Southeastern South Dakota, Clarence A. Hustrulid

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The American farmer has made tremen4ous improvements in his productive capacity and ability since the Colonial period. These improvements have been taking place at a constantly accelerating rate. Much of this improvement has been due to increased specialization. The growth of urban population is an indicator of the rapid development of specialization. During Colonial times, at least nine-tenths of the population was engaged in farming, and as late as 1870, half of all workers were s till engaged in agriculture. Less than twenty percent of the nation's labor force is now employed on the nation's farms. In addition to a …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The number of female swine which do not settle in producer's herds, both purebred and commercial, is thought to be at least 10%. Controlled studies at experimental stations indicate that this figure may be to low. Unconfirmed reports from several mid-west experimental stations indicate that between 20 and 30% of the female swine bred to farrow in the spring of 1950 failed to farrow. Approximately 30% of the gilts and sows bred in the South Dakota State College Swine Farm in the fall of 1949 failed to farrow, Also a considerable number of gilts which were to be bred were …

In this study the writer wishes to find out if they are still outstanding. The following questions are also discussed: are they contributing to leadership; are they adjusted in an occupation; are they working in agriculture; and what progress have they made in their field?
