Factors Contributing To And Affecting The Cellulose Digestibility Of Pelleted Roughage, John Russell Jahn
Factors Contributing To And Affecting The Cellulose Digestibility Of Pelleted Roughage, John Russell Jahn
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The transition to the pelleting of natural feeding materials has produced many problems. Various opinions have been expressed by the investigators regarding possible solutions to these problems. The proper mechanical formation of the pellet or wafer has been studied by several investigators. Several necessary factors have been determined. The temperature ranges that will produce the best possible product, from a feeding standpoint, have been tested against various pressures. The fineness of grinding or chopping have also been considered, as they relate to the digestibility and economy of the finished product. Moisture and adhesive agents have been considered in determining what …
Protein And Energy Levels For Wintering Beef Calves And Effects On Subsequent Production, Marcus Hoelscher
Protein And Energy Levels For Wintering Beef Calves And Effects On Subsequent Production, Marcus Hoelscher
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The need for minimum amounts of protein and energy by animals for maintenance, growth and production has been recognized for many years. It is also well known that the requirements will vary depending on species, age, weight and rate of growth or production. In order to provide livestock feeders with useful guides in feeding, several feeding standards containing recommended nutrient requirements have been prepared. The most commonly used standards for beef cattle are the “Morrison Feeding Standards” (1956) and the National Research Council’s “Nutrient Requirements of Beef Cattle” prepared by the Subcommittee on Beef Cattle Nutrition (1959). Feeding standards give …
Periodicals Printed In South Dakota From Territorial Beginning Through 1930, With A Check List Of Periodicals, Maxine Schrader Wiseman
Periodicals Printed In South Dakota From Territorial Beginning Through 1930, With A Check List Of Periodicals, Maxine Schrader Wiseman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The problems of this thesis are: first, to trace the chronological development of periodicals printed in South Dakota from the date of the first known periodical printed in Dakota Territory through December 31, 1930; second, to study the types of periodicals produced; and third, to compile a check list as complete as possible of South Dakota periodicals during the period chosen for study. The date December 31, 1930 was chosen as a convenient cut-off date since few periodicals began after that date. The chronological development of those magazines published before 1930 was continued until suspension or to the present date. …
The Digestibility Of Holocellulose Prepared From Various Forages With Special Emphasis On The Comparative Digestibility Of The Cellulose Portion And The Digestibility Of The Entire Holocellulose Fraction, Marion M. Thurston
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Estimating the feeding value of forage grasses is one problem that has confronted nearly every livestock nutritionist. The conventional system of proximate analysis as it was developed in weends. Germany over 100 years ago has been repeatedly criticized because the products are variable for cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. The crude fiber classification commonly suggests the fibrous, poorly digested and relatively unavailable portion of a feed. The ability of the ruminant animal to digest cellulose in the crude fiver fraction was not considered in the weende system by classifying it in the unavailable portion of forages/ The nitrogen free extract, commonly …
The Effects Of Different Methods Of Freezing On The Viability Of Rabbit Ova, Mansur Ferdows
The Effects Of Different Methods Of Freezing On The Viability Of Rabbit Ova, Mansur Ferdows
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
During the period between 1940 and 1960 artificial insemination of dairy cows grew from the experimental stage to an extensive business enterprise in the United States. According to the Dairy herd Improvement Letter (Vol. 36, No. 3, A.R.S., U.S.D.A.) only 7,359 cows and heifers were artificially inseminated in 1939, but by 1959 this number had increased to 6,932,249. Along with the extended use of superior sires, a logical conclusion was that some attention should be directed toward increasing the use of good female germ plasm. If this could be accomplished, a more rapid improvement in the quality of dairy cattle …

Response Of Feeder Lambs To Diehtylstilbestrol, Diallyldiethylstilbestrol, Diallylhexestrol, Dynafac And Animal Fat, Donald House Reid
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Livestock feeders operate on a narrow margin of profit. Their profit generally depends on rapid and efficient live weight gains rather than on a wide spread between buying and selling price of the animals. The need for efficient meat production has prompted agricultural scientists to develop and investigate a desperate array of compounds having growth stimulating properties and thereby aid the livestock feeder in improving rate and efficiency of gain. The market situation of inedible animal fats has changed dramatically in recent years. Lard and tallow are not currently used to the extent that they once were in the manufacturing …
Tenderization Of Meat By Pre-Rigor Infusion Of Various Chelating Agent, John A. Carpenter
Tenderization Of Meat By Pre-Rigor Infusion Of Various Chelating Agent, John A. Carpenter
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Tenderness in meat is a most important characteristic. Meat that has acceptable color, finish and flavor will still be rejected if it is not tender. Tenderness is also a very elusive characteristic and difficult to evaluate. Objective measurements of tenderness have been devised in an attempt to associate tenderness with a more stable factor such as connective tissue, amount of finish, age and size of muscle fibers. These measurements are not entirely successful. Subjective measurements such as taste panels give a better indication of over-all acceptability of meat but do not yield a definite value for tenderness. Experiments on rigor …
Ruminal Variation In Ph, Temperature, Bacterial Flora, And In Vitro Activity As Affected By Ration Change And Season, Norman Theodore Miller
Ruminal Variation In Ph, Temperature, Bacterial Flora, And In Vitro Activity As Affected By Ration Change And Season, Norman Theodore Miller
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The outstanding importance of the vast member of microorganisms in the rumen to the nutritional physiology of the ruminant makes it imperative that the factors influencing the numbers and types of these organism be thoroughly understood. A knowledge of when these ruminal fluctuations occur and their causes, whether it be due to external environment or dietary change, would be of significant value in the preparation of rations which could stimulate the ruminal flora to their maximum efficiency and in turn receive maximum feed efficiency from the animal. The specific objectives of this project are as follows: to make periodic checks …
Lysine Supplementation Of Swine Rations Containing Oats, Wayne Francis Larson
Lysine Supplementation Of Swine Rations Containing Oats, Wayne Francis Larson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The swine industry is a multi-million dollar business in the United States, concentrated primarily in the Corn Belt area. In South Dakota, which is located on the fringe of the Corn Belt, swine production is an important part of the economy of the state, which ranks ninth among all states, in hog numbers. Because of this tremendous volume of business, feed companies have put great emphasis on feed additives in an effort to lure farmers into buying their product. With the attention focused on antibiotics, chemobiotics, enzymes, natural and synthetic hormones, tranquilizers, and other feed additives designed to increase the …
A Differential Medium For The Isolation And Cultivation Of Sphaerophorus Necrophorus From Bovine Liver Abscesses, Charles Leslie Lamke
A Differential Medium For The Isolation And Cultivation Of Sphaerophorus Necrophorus From Bovine Liver Abscesses, Charles Leslie Lamke
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Sphaerophorus necrophorus is of considerable economic importance since it is the cause of many pathological conditions in a wide variety of animals. One such condition is liver abscess of cattle. This one costs the packing industry several million dollars a year. Grant (15) suggested that a selective medium be devised for the isolation and cultivation of S. necrophorus. Becrens (2) has used a veal infusion medium containing brilliant green for the isolation of the organism. This medium does not inhibit the group D streptococcus and great care has to be used in making the medium. The difficulty of maintaining cell …
A Rapid Method Of Determining Fat And Protein Content Of Beef Using Specific Gravity, Duane Donald Bieber
A Rapid Method Of Determining Fat And Protein Content Of Beef Using Specific Gravity, Duane Donald Bieber
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The present methods used for determination of fat and protein contents of meat samples are complicated, elaborate, expensive and time-consuming. A large number of these analyses must be made daily in the meat packing industry. A procedure which would decrease the time and expense of these fat and protein determinations and yet maintain the accuracy of the present “official” methods of analysis would be of immeasurable value to the industry. The need for a simple, rapid, practical and accurate method of analysis has long been recognized. The manufacturers of sausage and other processed meat items commonly establish and within practical …
The Production And Ingestion Of Antibodies In Milk, George Donald Marx
The Production And Ingestion Of Antibodies In Milk, George Donald Marx
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Since biblical times man has depended upon the cow for nourishment. The cow’s contribution to human and animal welfare has been tremendous. These contributions may be increased by artificially producing antibodies in milk. In view of recent experiments the established theory that antibodies cannot pass the intestinal wall after the animal is a few days of age may not be true. Much information has been gathered to support this theory. Since the mammary gland is capable of producing a considerable quantity of antibodies and since antibodies inhibit disease, the milk should be an excellent source of antibodies for disease protection …
A System For Making Selective Matings In Dairy Cattle, Basil Ralph Eastwood
A System For Making Selective Matings In Dairy Cattle, Basil Ralph Eastwood
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The term “selective matings” implies the selection of a sire to breed to each female on an individual, rather than a group or herd basis. Mating systems, other than random mating, may be classed either as the mating of like to like or as the mating of unlikes. This likeness or unlikeness may be based either on blood relationship or on individual appearance. The advantage and limitations of each mating system have been well worked out on a theoretical basis, and some of system have been thoroughly tested by experimentation and in the field. In actual practice many breeders use …
The Evaluation Of Weaning Weight, 12-Month Weight And 12-Month Type Score In The Selection Of Replacement Heifers, Birkett Howarth
The Evaluation Of Weaning Weight, 12-Month Weight And 12-Month Type Score In The Selection Of Replacement Heifers, Birkett Howarth
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The beef cattle outlook at present is one which demands attention if the needs of the future are to be met. The United States Department of Agriculture has estimated a need for one-third more meat production by 1975. Such an increase is attributable only to the rising population demands and does not reflect increased purchasing power. In addition to the rising need for greater beef production, it is equally important that this beef be produced as economically as possible. The beef cattle industry is one of the major sources of rural income in South Dakota. According to the South Dakota …

A Physiological Study On The Amino Acid Requirements Of Sphaerophorus Necrophorus, Douglas W. Kennedy
A Physiological Study On The Amino Acid Requirements Of Sphaerophorus Necrophorus, Douglas W. Kennedy
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Investigation into the growth requirements of Sphaerophorus necrophorus (Flugge, 1886) Prevot, 1938 presents a difficult area for study. Only a few such investigations have been attempted in the past for this highly pleomorphic, gram negative, and thread like micro-organism. At present, there is a great deal of confusion concerning its growth characteristics. The development of a chemically defined medium will certainly play an important role in obtaining consistent growth characteristics which are more typical of the organics. The importance of this organism has been centered upon its role as a pathogen. As a cause of necrobacillosis diseased of domestic and …
