Relationships Of Homologous Erythropoietin, L-Ascorbic Acid, And Iron Dextran To The Hemogram Of Newborn And Doe Rabbits, Lloud Edward Lippert Jan 1970

Relationships Of Homologous Erythropoietin, L-Ascorbic Acid, And Iron Dextran To The Hemogram Of Newborn And Doe Rabbits, Lloud Edward Lippert

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The neonatal-anemia syndrome, an anemia of newborn animals, in a commonly observed physiological phenomenon in swine, humans and rats. The severity of the anemia is subject to unpredictable individual variation, but may be modified by the nutrition of the dam. Alterations in swine neonatal hemogram values begin 3-5 days postpartum and include decreases in packed cell volume and hemoglobin concentration. Vigorous and healthy appearing newborn become weak and particularly subject to infective agents and stresses, which may terminate in death. A slow return to postpartum hemogram values is observed if the newborn animal survives. The economic considerations of newborn mortality …

Isolation An Characterization Of The Virus Of Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease (Ehd) Of Deer, Hsing Kuei Liu Jan 1970

Isolation An Characterization Of The Virus Of Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease (Ehd) Of Deer, Hsing Kuei Liu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The name "epizootic hemorrhagic disease" (EHD) of deer was first given by Shope et al. in 1955 because of the occurrence of the hemorrhagic disease in large epizootic_ proportions and because of its pathological features. It was also determined by them that the causative agent for the disease is a virus. Difficulties in studying the causative agent have been encountered because no host system other than the deer itself was available to support replication or detect the virus. However, isolation of the New Jersey strain of EHD virus was accomplished by Mettler et al. in 1962 using newborn mice and …

An Investigation Of Eye-Movements When X-Height And Line Length Are Held Constant And Alphabet Length Is Prismatically Varied, Harold D. Perry Jan 1970

An Investigation Of Eye-Movements When X-Height And Line Length Are Held Constant And Alphabet Length Is Prismatically Varied, Harold D. Perry

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The growing percentage· of type set by the "cold type" process combined with the growth of lithographic printing has increased the use of filmed typefaces. Machines now exist that can greatly reduce or enlarge a filmed typeface from its original size. A prism attachment on a process camera allows type to be altered in one dimension while holding the other constant. The effects on readability of such alterations are of importance to the printer. In a master's degree thesis study, Joseph W. Truex used a prism camera to simultaneously and direct! vary line length and alphabet length. He found no …

Factors Influencing Asexual Spore Formation By Ceratocystis Ulmi, Richard J. Roster Jan 1970

Factors Influencing Asexual Spore Formation By Ceratocystis Ulmi, Richard J. Roster

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Stock cultures of a pure strain of C. ulmi were obtained from the Plant Science Department at South Dakota State University. The inoculum was maintained on Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA) in petri dishes. On this medium, the fungus produced a grayish white rather sparse and appressed mycelium. Conidia were produced in heads on branched conidiophores. Quite often some sectoring was observed on PDA. Cultures producing coremia, obtained on 2% American elm shavings (on dry weight basis) plus bacteriological agar (8 g/1), were also used as an inoculum source. As is shown, this medium produced coremia and very little vegetative mycelium. …

Optimum Design Of Transversely Loaded Concrete Beam, Sheng Lung Tsai Jan 1970

Optimum Design Of Transversely Loaded Concrete Beam, Sheng Lung Tsai

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

American agriculure has advanced considerably in recent years. These unprecedented advances result primarily from recent developments which have occurred in agriculture science and technology. Recent trends have been toward the feeding of more animals on fewer feedlots. The concentrating of large numbers of animals has undoubtedly increased the efficiency of animal producion in certain parts of the country. But the confinement of large numbers of animals has undoubtedly increased the efficiency of animal production in certain parts of the country. Because waste management has become a major operational problem, improved methods of handling, treatment, and disposal of animal wastes must …

The Effect Of Harvesting And Storage Methods On Chemical Composition And In Vitro Digestibility Of First Cutting Alfalfa Hay, Perry A. Fales Jan 1970

The Effect Of Harvesting And Storage Methods On Chemical Composition And In Vitro Digestibility Of First Cutting Alfalfa Hay, Perry A. Fales

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The importance of alfalfa hay in dairy cattle feeding is generally acknowledged. The reasons why alfalfa is used so extensively in dairy cattle rations are due to its high protein content, high acceptability by cattle, its wide ·area of adaptation, and high yields. A popular way of handling the forage is to put it up as hay. South Dakota produced 3,261,000 tons of alfalfa hay in 1968. There were 73 million tons of alfalfa hay produced in the United States during 1968 (10) making it a crop of major importance. Farming practices have changed considerably the last ten years. Among …

A Comparison Of Management Systems For The Ewe Flock, Roger Allen Lind Jan 1970

A Comparison Of Management Systems For The Ewe Flock, Roger Allen Lind

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Generally sheep production relates to a grassland type of agriculture. But in many areas increasing acreages are used for cultivated crops, and less land is available for pasture due to new or improved cultural practices, increased fertilization, new or improved plant species and, in some areas, irrigation. Since the availability of land for use as pasture will most likely decrease in the future due to the increasing population and food demands of the world, confinement rearing of sheep may become a necessity. Mechanization in the sheep industry has been slow, while the use of confinement or semi-confinement management systems, laborsaving …

The Effect Of Fertilization Of A Native Lowland Pasture On Forage Intake And Nutritional Value Of Diet Selected By Grazing Sheep, John Joseph Doyle Jan 1970

The Effect Of Fertilization Of A Native Lowland Pasture On Forage Intake And Nutritional Value Of Diet Selected By Grazing Sheep, John Joseph Doyle

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Knowledge of the forage intake and nutritional value of the diet selected by grazing animals is basic to good range management. The amount and kind of forage chosen may vary with the kind of animal, its previous history, age, size, health, and physiological state as well as with the range site, range condition, season of the year, current weather, and management practices such as intensity of grazing, grazing systems, fertilization, and supplementation With protein, phosphorus, or other nutrients. A knowledge of the various factors that affect dietary intake and selection would permit the range manager to more wisely plan the …

Methods For Rapid Identification And Enumeration Of Streptococcus Bovis From Water, Lawrence Robert Koupal Jan 1970

Methods For Rapid Identification And Enumeration Of Streptococcus Bovis From Water, Lawrence Robert Koupal

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Because water can be a carrier of enteric pathogenic microorganisms, water pollution from a fecal source is a serious problem to a community obtaining water from streams and rivers. Adequate methods for detection of the enteric pathogens are lacking, consequently, much attention has been given to the detection of other microorganisms as indicators of fecal pollution. The microorganisms called the fecal streptococci are those streptococci which are commonly found in the intestinal tract of man and animals. The fecal streptococci have been divided into two basic groups within the Lancefield Group D streptococci. These two groups are the enterococcus group …

A Proposed Model For The Implementation Of Play Therapy In Elementary Schools, Nancy King Jan 1970

A Proposed Model For The Implementation Of Play Therapy In Elementary Schools, Nancy King

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Play therapy is based upon the belief that the natural medium of self-expression for a child is play. Through his play he can express himself' fully, "play out" his feelings and problems and try out different roles and theories of getting along in his world. In this paper, various approaches to play therapy will be explored. The objectives of this study were to determine the applicability of' p1ay therapy in the elementary school, how it is being implemented in South Dakota schools, and to suggest a workable program that could be implemented in an elementary school counseling situation. Specifically, the …

The Identification Of Changing Sex Roles Within A Family Unit As Perceived By First Graders, Janelle Fridley Jones Jan 1970

The Identification Of Changing Sex Roles Within A Family Unit As Perceived By First Graders, Janelle Fridley Jones

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Family life education includes the total education for living in families. The main emphasis of all home economics or homemaking education is life as it is lived within the home and family. Some aspects of home economics are usually included in the curriculum at all age levels from early childhood through secondary education. Family life in America has changed over the years. Such factors as family mobility, a greater amount of leisure time, an increase in early marriages, and more mothers employed outside the home indicate the need for education in family living. Moreover, currently fewer youngsters learn about homemaking …

A Novel Fm/Am Telemetry Transmitter, Robert L. Lounsbery Jan 1970

A Novel Fm/Am Telemetry Transmitter, Robert L. Lounsbery

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The transmission of information is in many cases vital to modern research. An example is the transmission of information which concerns the physiological phenomena taking place inside the body of an unrestrained animal. The transmission of the information has to be accomplished with a minimum amount of-discomfort to the animal. A physical connection to the sensor would cause much discomfort to the animal and would not indicate a normal situation. Therefore, in recent years the information gained from a sensor (inside of an animal's body) has been used as the intelligence to modulate a small telemetry unit. This information is …

A Comparison Of A Low Protein Diet Plus Added Methionine With A Normal Diet For Three Strains Of Laying Hens In Various Environments, Roger Dale Muller Jan 1970

A Comparison Of A Low Protein Diet Plus Added Methionine With A Normal Diet For Three Strains Of Laying Hens In Various Environments, Roger Dale Muller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The protein requirement of the laying hen encompasses a problem of great importance to the nutritionist. With the discovery of amino acids, which are commonly referred to as "the building blocks of protein," it was soon evident that the fowl had a requirement primarily for amino acids, not protein. It has been difficult to establish the exact amino acid requirements of each species and age group. To overcome this difficulty, feed formulae for laying hens as well as other groups of fowl have been designed to provide a surplus of protein and thus amino acids from a wide variety of …

Dairy, meat processing and mining industries are the most important sources of industrial wastes. Bacterial pollution is the …

Survival Of Fecal Coliforms And Fecal Streptococci In River Water, Joseph Walter Zerfas Jan 1970

Survival Of Fecal Coliforms And Fecal Streptococci In River Water, Joseph Walter Zerfas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The pollution of our limited natural resources, including surface waters, is a growing problem. The deterioration of the lakes and rivers is that is occurring is caused, in part, by the addition of organic material. One source of this organic pollution is the waste products of man and domestic animals, primarily in the form of fecal material. To control fecal pollution it is necessary to detect it. To detect such pollution quantitative methods are necessary. Methods for the detection of bacterial indicators endogenous to fecal material were developed for this purpose. Therefore, the purpose of this investigation is to determine …
