An Economic Analysis Of Alternative Farming Systems In Northeastern South Dakota, Mark Gene Leddy
An Economic Analysis Of Alternative Farming Systems In Northeastern South Dakota, Mark Gene Leddy
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis research focused on the economic viability of alternative farming systems which forego chemical inputs and emphasize crop rotations and legumes. The alternative farming systems were found to have distinctly lower direct cash costs of production. However, in one set of comparisons, these lower direct cash costs were not enough to offset the lower gross income received with the alternative system; thus, this system exhibited the lowest net return over costs. In the other set of comparisons, the lower direct costs were of sufficient magnitude for the alternative system to exhibit the highest net return over costs. Sensitivity analyses …
Habitat Selection And Sexual Suggestion Of Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep In Custer State Park, South Dakota, Larry J. Layne
Habitat Selection And Sexual Suggestion Of Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep In Custer State Park, South Dakota, Larry J. Layne
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Spatial segregation between Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis canadensis) ram and ewe herds has been documented by Geist (1971), Geist and Petocz (1977), Shank (1979), Morgantini and Hudson (1981), and Hogg (1983), where ram herds consist of mature males approximately 4 years old and older and ewe herds are comprised of all other individuals. Geist (1971), Shank (1979), and Hogg (1983) have shown that segregation occurs year-round except during the breeding season (November and December) when the sexes congregate on a traditional breeding range (cf. Geist 1971, p 209). These studies also have shown that the sexes remain separated …

Growth And Proteolytic Activity Of Selected Psychrotrophic Bacteria In Whole Milk And Whole Milk Retentate, Ravinder Reddy
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In the last twenty years a number of membrane separation processes have evolved from laboratory scale, through pilot plant investigation, to full scale production units. One such process, ultrafiltration, has been found particularly useful in the dairy industry. Ultrafiltration uses porous polymeric membranes to separate molecules, principally on the basis of their molecular weight. In milk, fat, protein and associated substances are retained on the membrane. Permeate, which passes through the membrane contains mainly water, lactose and other low molecular weight substances. There is interest in ultrafiltration of milk because of it is potential importance in saving costs to both …

Willa Sylbert Cather was born in December 7, 1873, in Winchester, Virginia, and Pearl Sydenstricker Buck was born in Hillsboro in the adjoining state of West Virginia nearly nineteen years later, on June 26, 1892. When they were sensitive young girls, both of them were exposed to "foreign” cultures, which were quite different from their original Victorian cultures of the East. Willa and her family moved to the Nebraska frontier when Willa was eight years old. In the Nebraska prairies of the late nineteenth century, there were many foreign immigrants who had come to settle: Swedes, Norwegians, Russians, French, Germans …

Chickpeas As A Protein And Energy Supplement For High Producing Dairy Cows, Darryl Lynn Hadsell
Chickpeas As A Protein And Energy Supplement For High Producing Dairy Cows, Darryl Lynn Hadsell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Thirty lactating Holstein cows were randomly assigned to one of three diets to evaluate chickpeas as a dietary supplement from wk 4 to 16 postpartum. Diets contained chickpeas at 0, 50, and 100 % of the concentrate dry matter in place of corn and soybean meal. Total mixed diets, fed individually, contained concentrate corn silage and alfalfa hay at 52, 32, and 16 % of the dry matter. Milk yield (34.5, 35.1, 35.7 kg/d) was higher for cows fed 100 % chickpeas than 0 % chickpeas. Fat (3.06, 3.09, 3.28 %) was highest for cows fed 100 % chickpeas. Milk …
Ozonation Of A Municipal Surface Water Supply To Reduce Trihalomethanes, Odor, Chlorine Demand, And Organics, Pen-Shi Peter Lee
Ozonation Of A Municipal Surface Water Supply To Reduce Trihalomethanes, Odor, Chlorine Demand, And Organics, Pen-Shi Peter Lee
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Lake Kampeska Filtration Plant draws its drinking water supply from the Lake Kampeska as a part of the drinking water system for the city of Watertown, South Dakota. In this investigation, an ozonation pilot plant was used to determine the effect of ozonation on trihalomethane formation, odor, chlorine demand, and organics. Spectrophotometric characteristics were analyzed for surrogate parameter studies. Following a preliminary study based on trihalomethane reduction, ozone dosages of 0, 4, 8, and 12 mg/1 were applied to raw water at detention times of 10, 15, and 20 minutes. Analysis of variance showed that: (1) Ozonation of raw …
Selenoamino Acids In Wheat And High-Selenium Yeast, Jinq Lih Lee. Lee
Selenoamino Acids In Wheat And High-Selenium Yeast, Jinq Lih Lee. Lee
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Selenium has been known to cause toxicity problems in animals since 1928. These problems arise when the element occurs in the soil at reasonably high concentration and is taken up by plants. Animals consuming the plants may then develop certain toxicity signs. More recently selenium has been shown to be an essential nutrient because of its involvement in the enzyme glutathione peroxidase (Rotruck et al., 1973). Evidence has been accumulating that the element may even help protect against cancer in humans (Shamberger, 1970). Consequently, there has been great interest in knowing about the content of selenium in various foods and …
Frontier Agriculture, 1880-1910 : An Area Investigation Of Human And Environmental Factors Involved In The Process Of Agricultural Evolution In Davison County, South Dakota, Chak P. Lee
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Our curiosity about how an area has developed into what it is today invariably draws our attention to its initial situation. In the United States, the frontier serves as the logical locus upon which questions such as the latter can be laid. Frederick Jackson Turner has popularized the frontier concept by elevating its place in the history of the American national development. What Turner's frontier thesis has for special offer to geography lies in the observation of the frontier as a discrete areal unit, set off, as it was, from the settled area due to the differential pace in the …

Effects Of Prostaglandin F2a [Alpha] Dose On Synchronizing Ovine Estrus Using A Single Injection Regimen, Karl F. Hoppe
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The cyclic nature of the reproductive process for females has elicited the focus of reproductive specialists. Alterations in this cycle may lead to a more productive female and consequently a more productive livestock operation. These alterations could entail changing the time of the year conception can occur and the specific times during the week estrus may be displayed. For example, the domestic sheep, Ovis aries, has an estrous cycle length of approximately 17 d, whereas the European beef cow Bos Taurus has an estrous cycle of approximately 21 d. Variations within species lead to ranges for parameters which may place …
A Cross Sectional Study Of Farmland Prices In South Dakota 1976-1984, Mohammad Z. Haque
A Cross Sectional Study Of Farmland Prices In South Dakota 1976-1984, Mohammad Z. Haque
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
U.S. land prices experienced a skyrocketing trend with the increase of commodity prices during World War I, collapsed with prices in 1921, remained steady in the 1920's, collapsed again with the farm prices in early 1930's, recovered slowly as farm prices increased in the late 30's and during World War II. In the lull between World War II and Korean War, farm prices and land values moved upward together. Consistent with the majority of regions in the United States, agricultural land prices in South Dakota also fluctuated during the first half of the twentieth century. South Dakota's average farmland values …
Life History And Production Of Three Species Of Isopods In Beargrass Creek Louisville, Ky, James A. Eckstein
Life History And Production Of Three Species Of Isopods In Beargrass Creek Louisville, Ky, James A. Eckstein
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The life history and annual production of the aquatic isopods L. fontinalis, C. intermedia and C. brevicaudus in a spring stream, Beargrass Creek, Louisville, Kentucky was studied. Reproductive activity was observed with the greatest intensity in the spring months from March to May. Smaller secondary peaks for recruitment of young were seen in the fall months for L. fontinalis and C. intermedia. Brood size for the three isopods was compared by linear regression. The mean annual biomass for the three isopods ranged from 0.67 g/m2 for C. intermedia, 0.83 g/m2 for C. brevicaudus to 2.1 g/m2 for L. fontinalis. Annual …
