Comparison Of Immunologic Responses Between Mice Differing At The Agouti Locus : Immunologic Abnormalities In Lethal Yellow (Ay) Mice Are Augmented By Obesity, Nancee L. Oien Jan 1988

Comparison Of Immunologic Responses Between Mice Differing At The Agouti Locus : Immunologic Abnormalities In Lethal Yellow (Ay) Mice Are Augmented By Obesity, Nancee L. Oien

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The agouti locus, located on chromosome 2 of the house mouse (mus musclus), functions in the complex regulation of pigment synthesis. The complexity of its regulatory role is revealed through the aberrations that become manifest when a mutation, specifically the lethal yellow (AY) mutation, occurs at the agouti locus. The lethal yellow mutation is associated with an alteration in pigment synthesis, onset of obesity at approximately 120 days, and an increased susceptibility to cancer. Based on the putative relationship between cancer and immunity, this mutation may be correlated with altered immune mechanisms. This correlation was investigated by comparing a delayed-type …

Zone And Drip Cooling Comparisons For Lactating Swine, Dan L. Raap Jan 1988

Zone And Drip Cooling Comparisons For Lactating Swine, Dan L. Raap

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A comparison of drip cooling, zone cooling, and conventional ventilation was performed on lactating swine. Overall, the cooling systems did not significantly improve swine performance. The drip and zone systems highly significantly lowered sow respiration rates by 40 and 28 percent, respectively, when compared to the respiration rates of sows from a conventionally ventilated room. Older sows consumed ten percent more feed than younger sows. Older sows returned to estrus after weaning approximately two days sooner than younger sows. Based on swine performance of this two-year study, neither drip cooling or zone cooling systems should be installed in areas with …

Comparison Of An Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay, An Indirect Fluorescent Antibody Test And A Direct Agglutination Test For Detecting Ovine Fetal Antibodies To Toxoplasma Gondii, Sheryl Lynn Seefeldt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Toxoplasma gondii is a coccidian parasite which produces a disseminated infection and reproductive failure in sheep. It is a major cause of abortion in sheep in New Zealand, Australia, and England. Within the last 5 years, T. gondii has been reported to cause ovine abortion in the United States. Individual flocks in New Zealand may lose 15-20 percent and sometimes as high as 50 percent of the lamb crop as a result of T. gondii induced abortion. The prevalence of T. gondii and the economic impact of the disease in U.S. sheep flocks is unknown. Several approaches have been employed …

Availability Of Elemental Selenium To Plants, Shu-Chen Tseng Jan 1988

Availability Of Elemental Selenium To Plants, Shu-Chen Tseng

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Selenium has been found to be both essential for and toxic to animals and humans. Plants make up the main source of selenium for animals which are the food source for humans. Therefore, the selenium content in soils and plants is of interest. The uptake and accumulation of selenium by plants is governed by many environmental factors such as plant species, soil pH, soil type, the chemical form of the selenium and the presence of other ions. The most important factors regulating selenium uptake by plants are the concentration and the form of selenium present in the soil. Many authors …

Aroyl Phosphates : Evidence For The High Reactivity Of Acyl Phosphates, Abdihakim O. Ahmed

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Organophosphorus compounds are one of the most important classes of chemical compounds found in plant and animal systems. Organophosphorus compounds are also important industrial chemicals used in building materials and in pesticides. Two typical organophosphorus pesticides are diazionan and malathion. In biological systems organophosphorus compounds are active constituents found in cell membranes and they are important mediators of energy transfer and storage processes. Energy liberated during biochemical processes is stored in the form of an organophosphate, adenosine triphosphate(ATP). The stored energy can be made available to the cell for its biochemical reactions that require energy input. During the course of …

Reproductive Performance Of Anestrous Crossbred Ewes Subjected To Artificial Photoperiod Or Melatonin, Kelly Ann Weiskircher Jan 1988

Reproductive Performance Of Anestrous Crossbred Ewes Subjected To Artificial Photoperiod Or Melatonin, Kelly Ann Weiskircher

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Sheep are seasonal breeders exhibiting estrus in the fall with the decreasing daylength. This characteristic limits the reproductive performance of the ewe. With the decreasing daylength, melatonin is produced by the pineal gland. This hormone is thought to trigger the onset of estral activity. The study herein attempted to alter this seasonal fertility pattern by subjecting ewes to artificial photoperiod and through the oral administration of melatonin and a melatonin ear implant. The lambs in this experiment were born during late fall which is more favorable than the normal lambing season for the survival rate and growth performance of the …

Control Of Downy Brome With Combinations Of Bay-Smy-1500 And Metribuzin, James R. Smart

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Downy brome (Bromus tectorum L.) is a severe weed problem in winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) throughout North America. Downy brome competes for space, light, nutrients in the soil, and most importantly moisture. Rydrych reported that a grower with reasonable control of downy brome can increase yield of winter wheat 6-12 bushels per acre. The lack of selective herbicides which control downy brome in winter wheat and conservation tillage practices have contributed to the spread of downy brome. Some herbicides labeled for downy brome control in winter wheat require incorporation. Incorporation of herbicides may not be compatible with reduced or …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research concentrated on the reproductive problem associated with the Ay. Granholm and Breck reported that lethal yellow females never produced more than three litters when put into production at puberty. Ay/a females are as reproductively efficient as their a/a littermates at a young age. Ay/a females progressively become obese and reproductively senescent beyond the age of 120 days. The obese Ay/a females beyond 120 days exhibit lower uterine weights and depressed ovulation. Upon treatment with exogenous pituitary gonadotropins, follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (IH), the reproductively senescent AY/S! females' ovulatory rates were restored to near control levels. …

Development Of An Analytical Method For The Trace Determination Of Mycophenolic Acid By High Performance Liquid Chromatography Following Extraction Of The Compound From Feedstuffs, Tesfamichael Zeccarias Kahsai

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Mycophenolic acid is toxic to animals consuming it beyond a certain level and possesses antitumor activity. Not many methods for its trace analysis in feedstuffs and agricultural products have been reported. Thus, it is desirable to develop a standard analytical technique for such important compounds. The purpose of this investigation is to develop a technique or method sensitive enough to determine trace quantities of the compound. The method developed is based on solvent extraction from feedstuffs and detection by high performance liquid chromatography. Solvent extraction methods have given good results with low background interferences when cleaned up by column chromatography …

Algin/Calcium Gels In Solid-Muscle Structured Beef Steaks, Roger C. Johnson Jan 1988

Algin/Calcium Gels In Solid-Muscle Structured Beef Steaks, Roger C. Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Alteration of the inherent characteristics of less preferred beef carcass portions to produce products with greater consumer appeal has been the ultimate goal of structured meat research. Consumer acceptance of structured products has been limited because of (1) low retail visibility, (2) diet/health concerns due to salt addition, and (3) undesirable uncooked product appearance due to discoloration and lack of fiber orientation. Development of solid-muscle structured products would alleviate these limitations and the negative influence the less desirable carcass portions have on total carcass value. Efficacy of a binding gel containing various concentrations of algin/calcium (Alg/Ca) and adipic acid (Ad) …

Lung Paraquat Content And Effects On The Lung Glutathione Antioxidant System, Nadph, And Polyamines Resulting From Intravenous Coinfusion Of Paraquat And Putrescine To Rats, Jacob R. Dunbar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Paraquat was administered to male, Sprague-Dawley rats via continous infusion, at dosage rates of 250 (LoPQ) or 500 (HiPQ) nmoles/hr for seven days. The purpose was to characterize the effects of prolonged, low blood levels of the herbicide on selected lung biochemical parameters. The efficacy of putrescine as an inhibitor of pulmonary paraquat accumulation, in vivo, was assessed in these animals by I.V. coinfusion of 2500 or 5000 nmoles putrescine/hr. Dose-dependent levels of both paraquat and putrescine were achieved by 18 hours and were maintained throughout the exposure period. Terminal lung paraquat content was also dose-dependent and up to 18-fold …
