Growing A God-Centered Academy In The Church: Developing A Spiritually-Grounded Teaching Paradigm, Virgil Melvin Walton Jr
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The Sunday schools of some churches of the Mount Olive Baptist District Association, MOBDA, are not well attended. Could effective discipleship teaching and a change in the spiritual formative mind-set of an instructor aid in disciple-making? This thesis will focus on the church’s didactic ministries and the presence of God, the Holy Spirit, in those ministries. An examination of the quality of instruction and teaching materials for authentic and God-centered instruction will be studied.
It is necessary that all of the MOBDA church’s teachers have a evidential relationship with the Holy Spirit. An instructor who is consistently spiritually grounded as …

Class Standing And Student Perceptions Of Safety In Christian Higher Education: A Causal-Comparative Study, Bradley Carlton Bowen
Class Standing And Student Perceptions Of Safety In Christian Higher Education: A Causal-Comparative Study, Bradley Carlton Bowen
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Campus safety has become a significant topic in higher education. A dynamic environment including regulatory changes and notable criminal incidents has resulted in rapid changes in campus policy in the United States. Limited research has been conducted regarding stakeholder perceptions of campus safety, though research is lacking regarding campus safety in Christian higher education. Research is especially lacking among Christian institutions in the southeastern United States and in comparing student perceptions based on class standing. This causal-comparative study examined the results of a survey presented to undergraduate students at a Christian university to answer the question as to whether there …

Examining The Effects Of Stress, Ego Identity, And Life Satisfaction On The Resilience Of Single-Parent Subgroups, Tara Marie Whitfield
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Single-parent homes have been identified as a family structure that is disadvantageous to the well-being of children. Being a single parent can also be extremely stressful, thereby putting the mental health of parents at risk. This study examined how the varied life paths of civilians and military veterans can alter an individual’s identity, stress levels, life satisfaction, and resilience when faced with the same adversities. The self-concept of the two populations was examined through the use of the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, Ego Identity Scale, Perceived Stress Scale, and the Satisfaction with Life Scale. The study was guided by three research …
The Mental Health Needs Of Coresident Offspring Dementia Caregivers: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, Nancy L. Cadwell Dusthimer
The Mental Health Needs Of Coresident Offspring Dementia Caregivers: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, Nancy L. Cadwell Dusthimer
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This interpretative phenomenological analysis was conducted to deepen understanding of the experience of six daughters who cared for and lived with a mother with dementia. Caregivers for a loved one with dementia experience well-documented stressors, but less is known specific to offspring who care for a parent with dementia, particularly related to their mental health needs and potential means of addressing those needs. Because family caregiving is grounded within the family system, the study utilized a systemic lens, also considering the formal caregiving and societal systems. With the exception of some benefit from paid services of adult day care or …
Developing Reciprocal Community In Jackson Baptist Church, Jamie Ryan Wilson
Developing Reciprocal Community In Jackson Baptist Church, Jamie Ryan Wilson
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Jackson Baptist Church lacks reciprocal community amongst its regular attendees and visitors. The focus is on the large group gathering on Sundays which has developed a consumer-based culture within the church. In both the Old and New Testaments, there are examples of reciprocal community. Acts 2:44(NASB) it states, “And all those who had believed were together and had all things in common.” The church in the first century developed an active reciprocal community. Strategies laid out in scripture and church history can assist building community. This project by taking those strategies will conduct an awareness campaign at Jackson Baptist on …
Exploring The Relationship Between Loss Of Resources And Posttraumatic Growth When Moderated By Religious Coping In West Grand Bahamians Three Years Following Hurricane Matthew, Andy Nakia Laing
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The objective of this study was to explore the relationship between loss of resources and posttraumatic growth when moderated by positive and negative religious coping in a sample of West Grand Bahamians who experienced Hurricane Matthew in 2016. It was hypothesized that religious coping would moderate this relationship and contribute to the development of posttraumatic growth and that the relationship would be influenced by the type of religious coping used. Only individuals who experienced resource loss as a result of the storm, who self-identify as a Christian, and who were residents of the community both during the storm and during …

A Correlational And Causal Comparative Study Of The First-Year Retention Of Special Admissions Students, Kelly Sue Wright-Laurents
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
College retention has been widely studied since it is an important indicator of institutional effectiveness; however, though higher education institutions have focused on factors that increase retention and graduation rates, many students who enter college do not persist to graduation. To increase the retention of all students, both regular admissions and special admissions, many institutions have implemented programs, like first-year seminars, to help students successfully academically and socially transition to college, which are important factors in first-year retention. The purpose of this correlational and causal comparative study was to determine the most significant predictor of first-year retention for special admissions …

The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to describe the lived experience of teaching theological reflection in the online environment for instructors at Christian institutions accredited by the Association of Theological Schools. The central theories guiding this study were reflective practice and transformative learning theory as they explore the relationship between experience and reflection. Since relatively few inquiries have been published on the ways in which seminary professors assist future religious leaders in the use of reflective practice, the central research question for this study was: How do instructors at Christian institutions accredited by the Association of Theological Schools …
The Impact Of Externalization On The Sexual Satisfaction Of Pornography Users: A Moderated Mediation Analysis, Kristin Liesl Hauswirth
The Impact Of Externalization On The Sexual Satisfaction Of Pornography Users: A Moderated Mediation Analysis, Kristin Liesl Hauswirth
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
In committed relationships, pornography use has been associated with a contradictory influence on relationship and sexual satisfaction, particularly for women. Previous research indicates that sexual shame and moral disapproval may be related to pornography use, especially for religiously-affiliated individuals. Research also suggests that individuals may use defense mechanisms such as externalization to avoid negative emotions. This study explored the correlations between women’s mutual pornography use and sexual satisfaction and used ordinary least squares regression to examine the moderating influence of externalization on the effect of moral disapproval on the relationships between mutual pornography use and sexual shame and mutual pornography …
Universal Leadership Model, Derwin Lamont Hickman Sr
Universal Leadership Model, Derwin Lamont Hickman Sr
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The Great Commission is the call of Jesus to his people to go out into the world and make disciples. The universal leadership model presents an opportunity for disciples/leaders to step up and fulfill the Great Commission. The church should be involved in discipleship training, outreaches and supporting the issues that are aligned with Christian ideology and important to people in the communities they serve. An effective universal leadership model should include diversity, training, desired change, accountability and effectiveness of change. In so doing, the church can then find parishioners within the church who may be transformed into disciples/leaders and …

Effect Of Religious Coping On Faith Maturity As Moderated By Hope, Clark Daniel Thomas
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
As a consideration based in the psychology of religion and hope theory, correlations between religious coping and faith maturity are explored with particular focus on identifying hope as a moderating factor. With hypotheses that religious coping predicts faith maturity as moderated by hope, Snyder’s trait hope and state hope scales along with the Pargament’s Brief RCOPE and Piedmont and Nelson’s Faith Maturity Scale-Short Form, developed from Benson, Donahue, and Erickson’s larger Faith Maturity Scale, are employed via survey of an adult Christian convenience sample. The study is informed largely by Pargament’s work with use of religion, unique in comparison to …

A Phenomenology Examining The Lived Experiences Of Student Mothers At Community College, Christine Renee Simon
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to describe the lived experiences of student mothers in the community college learning environment. Nationally, there are almost five million college students who are parenting a child under age 18, and in Texas, the number is one in four (Galasso, Harris & Sasser-Bray, 2018; Institute for Women’s Policy Research [IWPR], 2017; Noll, Reichlin, & Gault, 2017). Self-determination theory (SDT) by Deci and Ryan (2000, 2008) guided this inquiry by providing the lens to examine the lived experiences of student mothers. The central research question was: What is the lived experience of student …
Pornography And Purpose In Life: A Moderated Mediation Analysis, Cynthia Marie Evans
Pornography And Purpose In Life: A Moderated Mediation Analysis, Cynthia Marie Evans
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Extensive research has examined the relationship between pornography use, religiosity, and perceived addiction to pornography. Other research has explored the connections between religiosity and meaning or purpose in life. No research has examined the potential relationship combining all four constructs in one research study. To rectify this gap, the present study examined the mediating effect of perceived addiction to pornography, as well as the moderating effect of religiosity on the direct relationship between frequency of pornography use and meaning in life. Two hundred and eighty-nine participants, aged 18–30, who admitted using pornography in the past six months completed assessments addressing …

Comforting The Grieving Through Worship, Thomas Wayne Doss
Comforting The Grieving Through Worship, Thomas Wayne Doss
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
One of the most challenging aspects of the human experience is dealing with the loss of a loved one. Although death marks the end of human life, it can affect the life of the ones closest to the deceased. Often, the griever is left in a sea of pain, which can produce doubts, isolation, and emotional conflict. Although the grieving believer may turn to the church for support in his/her time of grief, the church body may find itself unsure of how to respond best and support the needs of the bereaved. This qualitative historical study examines the literature pertaining …

Smooth Transitions: An Examination Of Succession Planning And Leadership Continuity Among Directors And Associate Directors Of The Potomac Conference Corporation Of Seventh-Day Adventists, Fred-Richard T. Warfield
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Far too many organizations fall short of the strategic task of succession planning. The absence of satisfactory solutions in this area stifles the ability of an organization to achieve its mission and vision. Lack of planning in this area also contributes to a negative impact on overall morale, staff performance, and effectiveness as these turnovers ensue. The purpose of this thesis project is to explore the perceived absence of intentional succession planning and leadership transitioning among director and associate director-level leadership positions within the Potomac Conference Corporation of Seventh-day Adventists. In this project, surveys and one-on-one interviews are conducted among …

A Multiple Case Study Identifying Factors Influencing Church Attendance And Engagement With Unchurched And Dechurched Families, Jason Robert Waters
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Many medium-sized churches experienced significant growth followed by years of declining attendance (Haskell et al., 2016). Many of them are in locations that could allow for significant growth. It seems as if some once growing churches no longer recognize how to best reach their communities and how to minister to the needs of the families making up their surrounding communities. The purpose of this multiple case study, a comparative analysis, is to identify factors that positively and negatively influence church attendance and engagement among unchurched and de-churched persons and families. At this stage in the research, regular attendance and engagement …

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Facing the aging society, the Korean church has made various initiatives and efforts to realize quality social welfare for the elderly and has contributed greatly to society by expanding welfare facilities and operating and implementing various programs. Nevertheless, it is true that there are no specific measures to evaluate specific details and that the role of the church has been relatively undervalued. What the researcher noticed while studying the social welfare field professionally as a pastor was that the Korean church is not aware of its role and importance despite its considerable benefits and influence to the nation and society …
