Mechanical Properties Of The Intermetallic Compound Cafe2as2 At Small Length Scales, John Sypek Feb 2019

Mechanical Properties Of The Intermetallic Compound Cafe2as2 At Small Length Scales, John Sypek

Doctoral Dissertations

Nanotechnology has paved the way for the research and development of new classes of materials and how we use them. With the desire to decrease the size of devices all while having advanced properties, research in this field and the development of small-scale experimental techniques has become significantly important. Materials can deform in elastically or plastically when an external load is applied. If elastically deforming a material, the material can then fully recover when unloading and there is no permanent damage to the shape or the structure of the material. When plastically deforming, this means that the materials shape cannot …

Estimating Short-Term Synaptic Plasticity From Pre- And Postsynaptic Spiking, Abed Ghanbari Feb 2019

Estimating Short-Term Synaptic Plasticity From Pre- And Postsynaptic Spiking, Abed Ghanbari

Doctoral Dissertations

Fast information transmission in neural networks is heavily influenced by short-term synaptic plasticity (STP), and the type and timescale of STP varies by cell-type and brain region. Although STP has been widely characterized in vitrofrom recordings of postsynaptic potentials or currents, characterizing STP in in vivoin behaving animals is difficult due to the lack of large-scale intracellular recordings. Here, we use paired extracellular observations to estimate the short-term dynamics of synaptic transmission from spikes alone. We introduce an augmented generalized linear model (GLM) that includes a dynamic functional connection as well as several, non-synaptic factors that alter spike …

Software Tools For Dna Motif Similarity Comparison And Analysis, Ngoc Tam Le Tran Jan 2019

Software Tools For Dna Motif Similarity Comparison And Analysis, Ngoc Tam Le Tran

Doctoral Dissertations

Binding site motifs are short sequences of similar patterns found in DNA or protein. They have an important role in Bioinformatics as they reveal the transcription factors that control the gene expression. Hence, several motif discovery tools have been developed. We reviewed nine Web tools for finding binding site motifs in ChIP-Seq data. The results showed that they reported various results for an identical dataset. This is largely due to the fact that different tools use different strategies and possess unique features for detecting the motifs. Therefore, using multiple tools and methods is generally advised because the motifs commonly reported …

Influence Of Northward Redistribution Of Marine Prey And Predator Species On The Trophic Dynamics Of Environmental Contaminants And Nutrients In Arctic Marine Food Webs, Sara Pereira Pedro Jan 2019

Influence Of Northward Redistribution Of Marine Prey And Predator Species On The Trophic Dynamics Of Environmental Contaminants And Nutrients In Arctic Marine Food Webs, Sara Pereira Pedro

Doctoral Dissertations

The northward-range expansion of sub-Arctic species is altering species interactions, affecting the dynamics of nutrients and contaminants, in Arctic food webs. Arctic marine piscivores are switching from a diet historically dominated by Arctic cod to one comprised of sub-Arctic capelin and sand lance. Another change is the occurrence of killer whales in the Arctic and the presumed switch from a fish-based diet in temperate waters to one richer in marine mammals in the Arctic. My goal was to evaluate some of the consequences of these climate-driven ecological changes, by comparing contaminant and nutrient concentrations in shifting Arctic marine communities. Potentially …

Topology Optimization With Geometric Primitives, Shanglong Zhang Jan 2019

Topology Optimization With Geometric Primitives, Shanglong Zhang

Doctoral Dissertations

Structural shapes that can be described by geometric primitives such as bars and plates are commonly encountered in mechanical, aerospace and civil structures. In this thesis, I determine the optimal layout of a set of geometric primitives within a design envelope using topology optimization techniques. To perform the structural and sensitivity analyses of these structures, the geometric primitives are mapped onto a continuous density field defined over a fixed finite element grid via the geometry projection method. As a result, the optimal topology can be more easily fabricated by joining stock structural shapes through various means. Previous works on geometry …

Determining The Efficacy Of Insulin For Use In Factor Delivery Device For Tendon Healing And Regeneration, Daisy Ramos Jan 2019

Determining The Efficacy Of Insulin For Use In Factor Delivery Device For Tendon Healing And Regeneration, Daisy Ramos

Doctoral Dissertations

Tendon injuries account for roughly half of the 33 million musculoskeletal injuries that occur every year. Of all patients seeking nonsurgical treatment, 29% eventually require surgery. The use of autografts, allografts, and xenografts have limitations associated with donor site morbidity, availability, and immunogenicity. Tissue engineering has emerged as a feasible approach to find treatments for injuries requiring tissue replacement through biodegradable scaffolds, stem cells, and biomolecules.

Tissue engineering scaffolds serve to provide a temporary, biomimetic template for cells, as well as act as delivery vehicles for biomolecules, such as growth factors. Growth factors have been widely popular in tissue engineering …

A fifth-order implicit Runge--Kutta method and two fourth-order exponential integration methods were implemented for the GPU and paired with the analytical chemical kinetic Jacobian software pyJac. The performance of each algorithm was compared with a commonly used CPU-based implicit integrator CVODEs. The implicit Runge--Kutta method running …

Hierarchical Structures For High Dimensional Data Analysis, Mahmoodreza Jahanseirroodsari Jan 2019

Hierarchical Structures For High Dimensional Data Analysis, Mahmoodreza Jahanseirroodsari

Doctoral Dissertations

The volume of data is not the only problem in modern data analysis, data complexity is often more challenging. In many areas such as computational biology, topological data analysis, and machine learning, the data resides in high dimensional spaces which may not even be Euclidean. Therefore, processing such massive and complex data and extracting some useful information is a big challenge. Our methods will apply to any data sets given as a set of objects and a metric that measures the distance between them.

In this dissertation, we first consider the problem of preprocessing and organizing such complex data into …

Electric Form Factor Of The Neutron From Asymmetry Measurements, Richard Frederick Obrecht Jr Jan 2019

Electric Form Factor Of The Neutron From Asymmetry Measurements, Richard Frederick Obrecht Jr

Doctoral Dissertations

The overwhelming majority of visible mass in the universe is composed of protons and neutrons, collectively known as nucleons, which are arguably the most important strongly interacting systems to study. A nucleon may naively be thought of as a composite object built out of three non-interacting sub-objects, known as quarks, in the large energy limit; however, the structure of the nucleon is much more complicated, and consequently far richer, than a simple valence-quark picture. There are sea quarks in addition to valence quarks that interact strongly via the exchange of gluons resulting in a complex vacuum structure, and the collective …

”Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are a class of organic liquid compounds with low vapor pressures, which enables them to vaporize at ambient conditions. VOCs are largely toxic, carcinogenic, and mutagenic, and have profound adverse effects on human health and the ecological environment. Many VOCs cause ruinous health effects even at very low concentrations (ppm) and therefore control of these organic compounds is essential for ensuring good air quality. A large portion of VOCs cause catastrophic health effects such as cancer or liver damage even at very low concentrations (ppm), and the control of these compounds is vital in ensuring good …

Use Of Wicking Geotextile To Dehydrate Road Embankments, Chuang Lin Jan 2019

Use Of Wicking Geotextile To Dehydrate Road Embankments, Chuang Lin

Doctoral Dissertations

“Excess water within a pavement structure is the major cause of pavement deteriorations. A roadway is often constructed with soils compacted at the optimum water contents to achieve the best performance. After construction, the soil water content variation is controlled by the ambient environment. The base course aggregate is very sensitive to water content variations. Unfortunately, conventional drainage system can only drain gravity water, but not capillary water, and it cannot work under unsaturated conditions. Consequently, no matter how well the road is constructed, the water content is expected to increase with time and the excess water will inevitably accelerate …

Nanoscale Solidification Of Metals By Atomistic Simulations: From Nucleation To Nanostructural Evolution, Avik Mahata

Doctoral Dissertations

"Homogeneous nucleation during solidification in Al (fcc), Fe (bcc) and Mg (hcp) is studied by million-atom molecular dynamics (MD) utilizing the second nearest neighbor modified embedded atom method (2NN-MEAM) potentials. Spontaneous homogenous nucleation from the melt was produced without any influence of pressure, free surface effects and impurities. We also study the effect on the simulation size on homogenous nucleation and the heterogeneity in homogenous nucleation. The heterogeneity in homogenous nucleation originates from the twins, grain boundaries and short range order in the liquid during the initial stages of solidification.

To study the solid-liquid coexistence in binary Al alloys, interatomic …

Plasmonic Metamaterial For Structural Color Printing And Spontaneous Emission Control, Wei Wang

Doctoral Dissertations

”Plasmon polaritons or plasmons are a collective oscillation movement of free electrons in metal at optical frequencies. The frequency-dependent complex dielectric function makes the metal property at optical frequencies behave totally different with that at other spectral ranges with lower frequency such as infrared and microwaves. This novel property makes the so called plasmonics or nanoplasmonics a rapid growing research field over the past few years. Many innovative concepts and applications have been developed such as perfect absorber, structural color printing, and quantum emitter spontaneous emission enhancement.

In this dissertation two of the most important applications will be addressed. The …

On Developing A Graphitic White Iron For Metal-To-Metal Wear Systems, Jie Wan Jan 2019

On Developing A Graphitic White Iron For Metal-To-Metal Wear Systems, Jie Wan

Doctoral Dissertations

"This research addressed heat dissipation issues related to the adhesive wear observed in metal-to-metal wear systems, by developing a graphitic white iron to increase thermal diffusivity of the wear components. One of the premium materials commonly used in current metal-to-metal wear systems is Fe15Mo18Cr and field returned parts were characterized as part of this study. Failure analysis showed that white layers were formed on the wearing surface due to frictional heating and surface deformation. These white layers were extremely brittle and could be fractured easily during use, which in turn led to micro-galling defects that caused parts leakage. Increasing thermal …
