Phase-Field Modeling Of Rapid Solidification Processes, Nima Najafizadeh Jan 2025

Phase-Field Modeling Of Rapid Solidification Processes, Nima Najafizadeh

Doctoral Dissertations

"Many advanced manufacturing processes such as additive manufacturing utilize rapid solidification of alloys, as it enables the formation of exotic non-equilibrium microstructure and thus improved properties. However, the interrelationship between the processing parameters and the resulting microstructure in rapid solidification is yet to be fully understood. We aim to investigate the microstructure evolutions during the rapid solidifications using phase-field modeling. The phase-field method assumes a diffuse interface, which avoids tracking the moving interface and hence enables efficient numerical simulations for complex microstructure evolution. A phase-field model with coupled solute-thermal diffusion and solute trapping effect is developed to investigate the rapid …

Viscosity Stratified Turbulence: Insights From Direct Numerical Simulations, Quasilinear Reduction And Resolvent Analysis, Pulkit Kumar Dubey Jan 2025

Viscosity Stratified Turbulence: Insights From Direct Numerical Simulations, Quasilinear Reduction And Resolvent Analysis, Pulkit Kumar Dubey

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on wall-bounded shear-driven turbulence with temperature-dependentviscosity. Direct numerical simulations and quasilinear reduction have been used to establish the asymmetric variation of turbulent statistics in the wall-normal direction. A comparison of energy spectra in the cold and hot halves of the channel reveals that large scale motions are amplified in the more viscous half while small scale motions are amplified in the less viscous half. Interestingly, the threshold wavenumber distinguishing these scales remains independent of stratification. This observation has been verified via a low-order reconstruction of the turbulent kinetic energy profile using resolvent analysis. Fourier modes that selectively …

Introducing Triangular Groups And Further Results On Magic Groups, Nicholas Charles Fleece Jan 2025

Introducing Triangular Groups And Further Results On Magic Groups, Nicholas Charles Fleece

Doctoral Dissertations

In this research, we discuss two new topics in group theory. First, we define an n-magic square in a group to be a nxn array of group elements whose rows, columns, and diagonals have the same product. This definition is akin to the idea of magic squares in the integers. Groups that have an n-magic square are said to be n-magic. We begin with some preliminary results and focus much of our attention on 3-magic groups, though we also give some results for higher n. Through a series of propositions, we ultimately prove a characterization theorem for 3-magic finitely generated …

Radio Frequency Wave Propagation Modeling Within Obstructed Underground Mining Environments For Effective Miner Localization During Mine Emergencies, Emmanuel Atta Antwi

Doctoral Dissertations

The reliability of underground wireless communication systems remains a significant challenge, particularly during emergencies when the mine environment becomes severely obstructed by debris, dust, and humidity. These environmental and geometric conditions result in significant attenuation of electromagnetic (EM) waves and multipath effects that undermine miner localization and rescue operations. Existing Vector Parabolic Equation (VPE) models are efficient for straight or mildly curved tunnels but fail to account for the random and obstructive conditions typically encountered during underground emergencies. This research develops a novel radio propagation model for EM wave behavior in underground mine drifts under geometrically obstructed conditions. The model …

Advancing Thermodynamic Modeling In Materials Design: From Phase Stability In Metallic Systems To Ferroelectric Property Prediction In Functional Oxide, Kyaw Hla Saing Chak

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation advances the CALPHAD (CALculation of PHase Diagrams) approach for thermodynamic modeling which often lacks sufficient description of crystal lattices for critical phases in multicomponent system. Additionally, CALPHAD does not consider the structural features and its connection with functional properties for functional materials. To address these issues, a novel dual-ordered sublattice model for the κ-phase in Fe-Al-C system, (Fe,Al)3(Fe,Al)1(C,Va)1(C,Va)3, is introduced that improves predictions of equilibrium compositions and phase stability by accounting for both substitutional and interstitial ordering. For the Fe-B-C system, new sublattice formulations for FCC [(Fe)1(C,B,Va)1] and BCC [(Fe,B)1(C,B,Va)3], phases enhance boron solubility predictions and reveal insights …
