The Essential Elements of Adolescent-Friendly Care in School-Based Health Centers: A Mixed Methods Study of the Perspectives of Nurse Practitioners and Adolescents

Alison Moriarty Daley Ph.D.

University of Connecticut, 2016

The majority of the morbidity and mortality among adolescents results from preventable causes including risk-taking behaviors and injuries. Preventive care for this population therefore includes anticipatory guidance and screening aimed at reducing these risks. However, the rates of engagement in preventive care decline steadily throughout adolescence. School-based health centers (SBHCs) have been identified as an adolescent-friendly community resource for preventive care. The purpose of this study was to identify the …

Cation Contamination In Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells: Impacts, Mechanisms, And Mitigation, Md. Aman Uddin

Doctoral Dissertations

Polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs), a promising source of clean energy in automotive application, still require durability improvement before commercialization. Cationic contaminants originated from either the ambient air (e.g. roadside contaminants) or from the corrosion of stack and balance of plant components can significantly decrease the performance and life time of PEFCs.

This work is focused on the experimental and theoretical study of the effects of cationic contaminants on the performance of PEFCs. Specifically, this work assesses the impact of a foreign cation on the durability of PEFCs, clarify the mechanisms responsible for the performance degradation, devise performance recovery strategies …

"Smoking-Gun" Observables Of Magnetic Reconnection: Spatiotemporal Evolution Of Electron Characteristics Throughout The Diffusion Region, Jason Shuster Jan 2016

"Smoking-Gun" Observables Of Magnetic Reconnection: Spatiotemporal Evolution Of Electron Characteristics Throughout The Diffusion Region, Jason Shuster

Doctoral Dissertations

How does magnetic reconnection happen in a collisionless plasma? Knowledge of electron-scale dynamics is necessary to answer this outstanding question of plasma physics. Based on fully kinetic particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations of symmetric reconnection, the spatiotemporal evolution of velocity distribution functions in and around the electron diffusion region (EDR) elucidates how electrons are accelerated and heated by the cooperating reconnection electric and normal magnetic fields. The discrete, triangular structures characteristic of EDR distributions rotate and gyrotropize in velocity space as electrons remagnetize, forming multicomponent arc and ring structures. Further downstream, exhaust electrons are found to exhibit highly structured, time-dependent anisotropies that …

Transport Of Heat And Momentum In Non-Equilibrium Wall-Bounded Flows, Alireza Ebadi Jan 2016

Transport Of Heat And Momentum In Non-Equilibrium Wall-Bounded Flows, Alireza Ebadi

Doctoral Dissertations

Transport of momentum and heat in non-equilibrium wall-bounded flows is studied analytically and experimentally to better understand the underlying physics, transition dynamics, and appropriate flow scaling in non-equilibrium flows. Non-equilibrium flows, in which the mean flow time scales are comparable to turbulent flow time scales, do not exhibit universal behaviors and cannot be characterized only in terms of local parameters. Pressure gradients, fast transients and complex geometries are among the sources that can perturb a flow from an equilibrium state to a non-equilibrium state. Since all or some of these perturbation sources are present in many engineering application relevant flow …

On Tensor Autoequivalences Of Graded Fusion Categories, Ian Swenson Marshall Jan 2016

On Tensor Autoequivalences Of Graded Fusion Categories, Ian Swenson Marshall

Doctoral Dissertations

Fusion categories generalize the representation theory of finite groups. The simplest examples of fusion categories come from finite groups, their representations, and their cohomology. In general, it is useful to examine group theoretical features of fusion categories such as groups of (isomorphism classes of) tensor invertible objects, and gradings by finite groups. Indeed, every fusion category has a maximal pointed subcategory (generated by tensor invertible objects) and a universal grading by a finite group. We use such features to study tensor autoequivalences.

Pointed fusion categories: categories for which all simple objects are tensor invertible, provide our prototype for graded fusion …

Ontology Of Close Human-Nature Relationships, Neil H. Kessler Jan 2016

Ontology Of Close Human-Nature Relationships, Neil H. Kessler

Doctoral Dissertations

The world’s environmental problems call out for solutions. At root, many of the solutions currently being offered revolve around how modern humans relate to the environment. An array of theorists have offered perspectives and prescriptions for improvement of this relationship, with many seeking to promote a sense of closeness between human and nonhuman. But, in attempting to offer perspectives on how this might be achieved, theorists tend to neglect the relational structure and dynamics that produce closeness or, if exploring it, tend to characterize the nonhuman as incapable of participating in it as a truly close, relational partner. In this …

"In this dissertation, several novel defense methodologies for cyber-physical systems have been proposed. First, a special type of cyber-physical system, the RFID system, is considered for which a lightweight mutual authentication and ownership management protocol is proposed in order to protect the data confidentiality and integrity. Then considering the fact that the protection of the data confidentiality and integrity is insufficient to guarantee the security in cyber-physical systems, we turn to the development of a general framework for developing security schemes for cyber-physical systems wherein the cyber system states affect the physical system and vice versa. After that, we apply …

Multiphase Field Modeling Of The Formation Path Of Delta Hydrides In Zirconium, Jacob Luke Bair Jan 2016

Multiphase Field Modeling Of The Formation Path Of Delta Hydrides In Zirconium, Jacob Luke Bair

Doctoral Dissertations

"Zirconium alloys are commonly used in nuclear fuel rod claddings due to their high ductility, good corrosion resistance, and low neutron absorption cross section. Among the most important weaknesses of zirconium alloys is their affinity for hydrogen, resulting in formation of hydrides in the cladding, and leading to embrittlement and mechanical failure. Despite numerous studies on hydride precipitation in zirconium alloys, the nucleation and formation path of stable δ hydrides in α zirconium matrix are not yet fully understood.

In this Ph.D. research project, two novel quantitative phase-field models were developed and utilized to advance our understanding of mechanisms of …

"Freshman science courses are intended to prepare students for the rigor and expectations of subsequent college science. While secondary education aims to prepare students for the college curriculum, many incoming freshman lack the sense of responsibility for their own learning that is essential for success in a college-level course. The freshman general-chemistry laboratory course at Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T) was identified as a bottleneck course with a demand beyond accommodation capacity. To address the bottleneck and develop a sense of learner responsibility, a decision was made to investigate laboratory course delivery strategies. As a result of …

Dynamic Impact Of Ageing Dump Truck Suspension Systems On Whole-Body Vibrations In High-Impact Shovel Loading Operations, Saeid R. Dindarloo Jan 2016

Dynamic Impact Of Ageing Dump Truck Suspension Systems On Whole-Body Vibrations In High-Impact Shovel Loading Operations, Saeid R. Dindarloo

Doctoral Dissertations

"Surface mining operations typically deploy large shovels, with 100+ tons per pass capacity, to load dump trucks in a phenomenon described as high-impact shovel loading operations (HISLO). The HISLO phenomenon causes excessive shock and vibrations in the dump truck assembly resulting in whole body vibration (WBV) exposures to operators. The truck suspension system performance deteriorates with time; therefore their effectiveness in attenuating vibrations reduces. No research has been conducted to study the impact of ageing suspension mechanisms on the magnitudes of WBV in HISLO operations.

This study is a pioneering effort to provide fundamental and applied knowledge for understanding the …

"In order to maximize bioethanol production an efficient pretreatment method for the hydrolysis of polysaccharides to fermentable sugars is necessary. Commonly used pretreatment methods are the slow enzymatic hydrolysis and the corrosive mineral acid hydrolysis process that requires a post-treatment neutralization step and generates waste stream. We investigated the high temperature water with carbonic acid catalyst as an alternative method. Carbonic acid generated from dissolved CO2 is inexpensive and environmentally benign, and easily removed by decompression. A high pressure continuous flow reactor that can continuously process the wet biomass stream and perform the carbonic acid hydrolysis in-situ using the …

Contribution Of New Thiol Antioxidant In The Treatment Of Acetaminophen Toxicity, Ahdab Naeem Khayyat Jan 2016

Contribution Of New Thiol Antioxidant In The Treatment Of Acetaminophen Toxicity, Ahdab Naeem Khayyat

Doctoral Dissertations

"Acetaminophen (N-acetyl-p-aminophenol, APAP) is one of the most widely used over-the-counter antipyretic analgesic medications. It is safe at therapeutic doses, but an overdose can result in severe hepato-nephrotoxicity, a leading cause of drug-induced acute liver failure in the U.S. Although a few different mechanisms have been proposed for APAP-induced toxicity, a significant amount of evidence has pointed to the potential involvement of oxidative stress in acetaminophen toxicity. Depletion of glutathione (GSH) is one of the initiating steps in APAP-induced toxicity; therefore, one strategy for restricting organ damage is to restore GSH levels by using GSH prodrugs like N-acetylcysteine (NAC). Although …

Modeling, Analysis, And Simulation For Aqueous-Based Ceramic Pastes In Freeze-Form Extrusion Fabrication Process, Mingyang Li Jan 2016

Modeling, Analysis, And Simulation For Aqueous-Based Ceramic Pastes In Freeze-Form Extrusion Fabrication Process, Mingyang Li

Doctoral Dissertations

"During the freeze-form extrusion fabrication process, both the extrusion and freezing processes are complex due to the aqueous-based ceramic pastes' non-Newtonian behavior, large latent heat of the water contained in the paste, and the small temperature difference between the ambient and the paste. In this study, the steady-state relationship between plunger velocity and extrusion force is developed based on a modified Herschel-Bulkley viscosity model and the Navier-Stokes equations, and the dynamic response of the extrusion force is described by a first-order nonlinear equation when plunger velocity is taken as an input. It is shown that the extrusion response time depends …

Geophysical Imaging Of Karst Features In Missouri, Jeremiah Chukwunonso Obi

Doctoral Dissertations

"Automated electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) supported with multichannel analysis of surface waves (MASW) and boring data were used to map karst related features in Missouri in order to understand karst processes better in Missouri. Previous works on karst in Missouri were mostly surficial mapping of bedrock outcrops and joints, which are not enough to define the internal structure of karst system, since most critical processes in karst occur underground. To understand these processes better, the density, placement and pattern of karst related features like solution-widened joints and voids, as well as top of bedrock were mapped. In the course of …
