Otitis Media And Language Development In Late Talkers, Timothy Forest Lynn
Otitis Media And Language Development In Late Talkers, Timothy Forest Lynn
Dissertations and Theses
While there is agreement in the literature that otitis media is an extremely prevalent disorder among young children, there is disagreement as to the effect that otitis media has on language development. The lack of definitive research attests to the complexity of the issue and to the need for continued research.
This study examined the relationship between an early history of otitis media and the language development of a group of "late talkers". The 28 toddlers in this group, while otherwise normal, were late to begin to speak. Each of the subjects was placed into one of two subgroups, depending …

The primary purpose of the Centralia Main Street Program is to involve Centralia in a community development process directed to changing the …
Hearing Aid Satisfaction And Rate Of Return For Repairs: A Comparison Of Two Kaiser Dispensing Programs, Lynn L. Behrendsen
Hearing Aid Satisfaction And Rate Of Return For Repairs: A Comparison Of Two Kaiser Dispensing Programs, Lynn L. Behrendsen
Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to investigate the hypothesis that a dispensing program utilizing rehabilitative follow-up in the form of a post-fitting check appointment would show: (1) less return for repairs for hearing aids; (2) higher patient satisfaction with the aid; and (3) higher patient satisfaction with the service received during the hearing aid dispense than would a clinic with no follow-up. Data for comparison between the two clinics were drawn from medical chart review, frequency of hearing aid repairs, and from a questionnaire which assessed satisfaction levels. Patients were also asked to estimate the amount of use with …
Politics And Education: The Nicaraguan Literacy Crusade, Teresa Squires Osborne
Politics And Education: The Nicaraguan Literacy Crusade, Teresa Squires Osborne
Dissertations and Theses
The Nicaraguan Literacy Crusade of 1980, carried out in the aftermath,of a long and destructive revolution, was able, in five months time, to decrease the nation's illiteracy rate from 50 percent to 13 percent. The newly fonned Nicaraguan government, recognizing the political nature of education, viewed its Literacy Crusade as a major step· in the development of a "new", post-revolutionary Nicaragua.
As a means of comparison, two other literacy campaigns are also examined: the Cuban campaign of 1961, and the UNESCO-sponsored Experimental World Literacy Programme, in place from 1965-1973.
The Cuban campaign served as a precursor to the Nicaraguan effort. …
Finite Element Analysis Of Thermal Stresses In Semiconductor Devices, Joachim Karl Wilhelm Duerr
Finite Element Analysis Of Thermal Stresses In Semiconductor Devices, Joachim Karl Wilhelm Duerr
Dissertations and Theses
The failure of integrated circuit due to Silicon fracture is one of the problems associated with the production of a semiconductor device. The thermal stresses, which result in die cracking, are for the most part induced during the cooling process after attaching the die with Gold-Silicon solder. Major factors for stress generation in material systems are commonly large temperature gradients and substantial difference in coefficients of thermal expansion.
This research covers the thermal stresses introduced upon cooling a composite Silicon device. A transient thermal analysis has been performed to determine the temperature gradients. The stress distribution has been investigated. For …
Density Currents In Circular Wastewater Treatment Tanks, David M. Laliberte
Density Currents In Circular Wastewater Treatment Tanks, David M. Laliberte
Dissertations and Theses
Deviations from ideal flow and settling occur in circular wastewater treatment tanks because of tank geometry, flow conditions, and density currents caused by variations in suspended solids concentration and temperature distributions. Thermally induced density currents were investigated in this study. Under winter, low flow conditions, measurements were made of vertical and radial temperature distributions in the circular chlorination tank at Lake Oswego, Or., and in the circular primary and secondary clarifiers at Bend, Or. Thermistor arrays were used to collect the data which exhibited both vertically well-mixed and a two-layer flow regime. Inlet geometry and suspended solids in the secondary …
Gis Address-Matching And Transportation Analysis, James D. Orrell
Gis Address-Matching And Transportation Analysis, James D. Orrell
Dissertations and Theses
Geographic Information System (GIS) address-matching combined with other GIS processing offers new analytical opportunities in the area of transportation planning and analysis. Address-matching, an automated method for generating geographically-referenced (geocoded) point locations on a map from common tabular databases, can facilitate transportation analysis by providing a planning tool based on individual rather than aggregated spatial distributions more common to transportation issues.
This thesis presents a case study in which GIS address-matching was I applied to a transportation problem at Oregon Health Sciences University (OHSU) in Portland, Oregon. The transportation problem at OHSU is common to major employment centers in urban …
The Assessment Of Phonological Processes : A Comparison Of Connected-Speech Samples And Single-Word Production Tests, Susan A. Pinkerton
The Assessment Of Phonological Processes : A Comparison Of Connected-Speech Samples And Single-Word Production Tests, Susan A. Pinkerton
Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to determine if single-word elicitation procedures used in the assessment of phonological processes would have highly similar results to those obtained through connected speech. Connected speech sampling provides a medium for natural production with coarticulatory influence, but can be time-consuming and impractical for clinicians maintaining heavy caseloads or working with highly unintelligible children. Elicitation through single words requires less time than a connected-speech sample and may be more effective with highly unintelligible children because the context is known, but it lacks the influence of surrounding words. Given the inherent differences between these two methods …
Biogeography And Species Density Distributions Of Tasmanian Mammals, Jerry E. Bevers
Biogeography And Species Density Distributions Of Tasmanian Mammals, Jerry E. Bevers
Dissertations and Theses
Separated from mainland Australia by the Bass Strait, Tasmania has acted as an island preserve maintaining large populations of many mammalian species presently uncommon, rare, or extinct on mainland Australia.
There are few studies of Tasmanian mammal distributions. Recent distributional maps, based on information from surveys and mammal specimens, allowed for an investigation of the species density distributions of the terrestrial mammals of Tasmania. Compilation of species' distributional information into species density distributions provides an overview as to which areas may provide the most significant habitat for the greatest number of species; what geographic variations may influence species distributions; and …
A Confirmatory Factor Analysis Of Two Competing Social Power Measurement Systems, Joseph E. Criqui
A Confirmatory Factor Analysis Of Two Competing Social Power Measurement Systems, Joseph E. Criqui
Dissertations and Theses
The main purpose of this study is to analyze a measurement instrument developed by Frost & Stahelski (1988) to measure French & Raven's (1959) bases of social power. The measurement instrument of a competing typology of social influence tactics (Kipnis, Schmidt, & Wilkinson, 1980) was also administered to the same managerial population (N=108). Confirmatory factor analyses using LISREL (Joreskog & Sorbom, 1986) were performed on each scale. Possible relationships between the two typologies were explored. Results include confirming a modified Frost & Stahelski scale and no confirmation of the Kipnis et al. scale. Canonical correlation yielded two dimensions where Coercive …
Distribution Of Sand Within Selected Littoral Cells Of The Pacific Northwest, Don Joseph Pettit
Distribution Of Sand Within Selected Littoral Cells Of The Pacific Northwest, Don Joseph Pettit
Dissertations and Theses
Beach sand acts as a buffer to wave energy, protecting the shoreline from erosion. Estimates of the quantity and distribution of beach sand in littoral cells of the PNW are critical to the understanding and prediction of shoreline erosion or accretion. This study was initiated in order to: 1) document the distribution of sand in littoral cells of the Pacific Northwest; 2) determine the factors which have brought about these present distributions; and 3) address the relationship of beach sand distribution to shoreline stability.
Walter Kempowski's Familienchronik: History And The Role Of Erziehung, Carla Ann Damiano
Walter Kempowski's Familienchronik: History And The Role Of Erziehung, Carla Ann Damiano
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis attempts to prove that Walter Kempowski writes historical fiction. For this reason he should be considered an important 20th century German author. This contention is based on the presence of historical references regarding the topic of Erziehung in the Kempowski Familienchronik.
The Familienchronik is a series of six novels which follow the historical development of the Kempowski family in Germany beginning from the year 1900 and continuing through 1963. Unique to the novels is that they represent thoughts and actions of the German middle-class spanning these years. The author does not attempt to use hindsight as a …
The Least Preferred Co-Worker Scale As A Predictor Of Leadership Behavior In Work Settings, Jenell Arlene Streeter
The Least Preferred Co-Worker Scale As A Predictor Of Leadership Behavior In Work Settings, Jenell Arlene Streeter
Dissertations and Theses
This study evaluates the construct validity of the Least Preferred Co-worker (LPC) Scale by testing the predictions made by the motivational hierarchy hypothesis. The respondents were one hundred fifty-nine supervisors and managers. The LPC determined leadership style as either relationship-oriented or task-oriented. Situational control was measured by the Leader-Member Relations scale, Task Structure scale, and Position Power scale. Consideration behavior, measured by the adapted LBDQ, reflected a need for interpersonal success. Initiation of structure behaviors, measured by the adapted LBDQ, reflected a need for task success. Two hypotheses were tested: (1) High LPC leaders in high control situations engage in …

Goal-Directed Imagining: The Effect Of Suggestions Of Warmth And Coolness On Blood Flow To The Hand, John Mark Dilworth
Dissertations and Theses
Recent research was reviewed which claimed to demonstrate that hypnotic suggestions could be used to control blood flow. Numerous methodological and conceptual problems in these studies were identified and a rigid experimental design with tighter controls was employed to investigate the claimed effects on blood flow. Subjects listened to either a standardized hypnotic induction or a passage of relaxing music. Both groups then listened to the Creative Imagination Scale (Wilson & Barber, 1978) (CIS) which ended with an added item containing suggestions of coolness. Localized skin temperature of the right hand was monitored throughout as an indication of blood flow. …

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the experience of the sisters within the context of the total missionary effort and the religious changes affecting the Catholic Church in the United States and Latin America during the 1960's.
The Enigmatic Founder: Liberalism, Republicanism And The Thought Of James Madison, John S. Witherow
The Enigmatic Founder: Liberalism, Republicanism And The Thought Of James Madison, John S. Witherow
Dissertations and Theses
In the twentieth century the debate over the ideological origins of the founding period and early republic has resulted in a polarization of historical interpretations. Recently, the conflict has centered on historians who use either the liberal or classical republican paradigms to explain these eras. Scholars of the founding period have argued for the dominance of one political ideology or the other in the thought of important figures of this time. Unfortunately, this struggle has led to a narrow interpretation of arguably the greatest thinker in American History, James Madison. To the contrary, I hold Madison's thought was influenced by …

Gravity Maps, Models And Analysis Of The Greater Portland Area, Oregon, Paul T. Beeson
Dissertations and Theses
Growing concern over earthquakes in the Pacific Northwest has prompted the mapping and location of near surface faults in the Portland area, Oregon. Visible evidence of faults is poor, requiring the use of geophysical methods to assist in mapping and defining structures in the basin. Gravity maps and models may help in addressing this problem.
Two free-air gravity models were produced. The first model constructed from existing data crosses the basin from Petes Mountain northeast to the Columbia River. The second model is from a gravity survey along Forsythe Road near Clackamas Heights.
The line crossing the basin confirms previous …
John Rawls, The Conception Of A Liberal Self, And The Communitarian Critique, Johnathan Edward Mansfield
John Rawls, The Conception Of A Liberal Self, And The Communitarian Critique, Johnathan Edward Mansfield
Dissertations and Theses
John Rawls' A Theory of Justice stands as the single most important work in the Anglo-American liberal tradition after World War II. In A Theory of Justice, Rawls revives the social contract doctrine in order to determine principles of justice that would be chosen by persons who are free and equal moral individuals. Since Rawls believes that no single conception of the good can establish justice in a pluralistic society, he posits a set of principles of right which are prior to any particular good. Thus his theory, which he calls "justice as fairness," is deontological. Since its publication …

The Electrokaryotype And Molecular Characterization Of Trypanosoma Cervi Isolates Using Recombinant Dna Techniques, J. Lindsley Bennett
Dissertations and Theses
The distribution of trypanosomes infecting wild ruminants of North America has only recently been investigated. Many isolates have been mensurally studied and were determined to be conspecific with Trypanosoma cervi. Widely divergent forms exist however, between host species and seasonally within a host. To determine the validity of all inclusions in the taxon and the extent of intraspecific variability, trypanosome isolates of moose, reindeer, antelope, muledeer, Roosevelt Elk and two discrete transplant populations of Rocky Mountain elk were characterized and differentiated using recombinant DNA techniques.
Cross-Cultural Differences In Written Discourse Patterns : A Study Of Acceptability Of Japanese Expository Compositions In American Universities, Hiroko Kitano
Dissertations and Theses
Since Kaplan started the study of contrastive rhetoric, researchers have investigated Japanese and English compositions and have found some differences between them. However, few studies have investigated how these differences are perceived by native English readers when the different rhetorical patterns are transferred to English writing.
Drawing from Hinds' study, this research focuses on the following: how the Japanese style of writing is evaluated by Japanese and American readers, especially in academic situations, how Japanese rhetorical patterns are perceived by American readers, and how a change of organization affects the evaluation by American readers.

Facing Both Ways: Yan Fu, Hu Shi, And Chen Duxiu -- Chinese Intellectuals And The Meaning Of Modern Science, 1895-1923, Niobeh Crowfoot Tsaba
Dissertations and Theses
The concern of Chinese intellectuals with the "idea" of modern science from the West in the transition generation from 1895 to 1923 was fundamentally a concern about "national survival" and modernity. The value and meaning that accrued to science as "method" -- as a "thinking technique" -- and to the evolutionary ideas of Charles Darwin and Herbert Spencer as the "science of choice" among Chinese intellectuals of this period, was due to belief or disbelief in the power of these ideas to describe, explain, or solve the problematic of "modernity" in a Chinese context.
Yan Fu's (1853-1921) translations of Thomas …

Dissertations and Theses
The present study is comprised of two parts: 1) an exploratory ethnography of a contemporary polygynous community governed by a strong patriarchal ideology in Pinesdale Montana with emphasis on social relationships, and 2) an analysis of the factors which have allowed women's groups to develop in Mormon fundamentalism. The ethnographic account of the community contextualizes the occurrence of female groups in Pinesdale. A model of the formation of female groups designed by Nancy Leis (1974) in her study of the West African Ijaw is used to provide a better understanding of how female groups are formed, and is applied to …
Communication Stress And Coping Strategies Among Japanese University Students In The United States, Atsuko Kurogi
Communication Stress And Coping Strategies Among Japanese University Students In The United States, Atsuko Kurogi
Dissertations and Theses
The significant increase of Japanese students studying in the United States suggests an increase in interactions with Americans. However, it does not mean that Japanese are aware of intercultural communication. They may experience stress in their interactions and their acculturative process because of cultural differences. They also may try to cope with the stress in their own way. Their stress and coping strategies may affect their academic performance, which is the most important aspect in their student life.
The purpose of this study is to examine whether there is any relationship among communication stressors, coping strategies, perceived academic self-efficacy, self-statement …
