Zoning – Neighborhood Character And Historic Overlays In Lexington, Ky, Taylor S. Price
Dissertations and Theses
Zoning has a significant impact on our built environment. Overlay zoning, an additional form of restrictive zoning, is a tool that municipalities utilize to control development and changes to neighborhoods. This study analyzes the impact that historic district (H-1) and neighborhood character (ND-1) overlays have on home sale prices in Lexington, KY. Results suggests that overlays have a significant positive impact on home values. Results also suggest that that overlays exhibit spatial impacts that extend further than the homes included in the overlay.

The Modern Formulation Of Chinese Art History And The Building Of A Nation In Early Twentieth-Century China, Chennie Huang
The Modern Formulation Of Chinese Art History And The Building Of A Nation In Early Twentieth-Century China, Chennie Huang
Dissertations and Theses
At the dawn of the twentieth century, the Chinese formulation of art history underwent dramatic changes. It moved away from the traditional narratives that did not follow a strict chronology to adopt the Western linear model which emphasizes progress and national identity. Based on the premodern tradition, the modern formulations of Chinese art history began as a political strategy for nation building amid the political upheavals, including military attacks on China that led to the end of Qing imperial rule and the beginning of the Republican era (1912-1949).
In the early 1900s, while exiled in Japan, Liang Qichao 梁啟超 (1873-1929), …

The Epidemiology Of Somatic Depression And Eating Disorders: The Relationship Between Depressive Subtypes And Symptoms Of Disordered Eating, Anita M. Sicignano
The Epidemiology Of Somatic Depression And Eating Disorders: The Relationship Between Depressive Subtypes And Symptoms Of Disordered Eating, Anita M. Sicignano
Dissertations and Theses
Depression is known to affect females in much greater numbers than males, with about three times as many women having the disorder as men (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). A similar gender disparity can be seen in eating disorders, where up to nine in ten sufferers are female (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Studies have shown that most of the gender difference in depression occurs as a result of women experiencing a form of depression involving a number of body-centric symptoms, including headaches, weight changes, fatigue, and insomnia, which has been termed “somatic depression” (Silverstein et al., 2013). Some of the symptoms, …
Silence As Weakness Or Strength In Hurston And Morrison, Tanzania S. Browne
Silence As Weakness Or Strength In Hurston And Morrison, Tanzania S. Browne
Dissertations and Theses
In literature, voice is a literary device authors use to empower their characters. In fact, both Zora Neale Hurston, in her renowned novel Their Eyes Were Watching God, and Toni Morrison, in her 1981 novel Tar Baby, exploit voice in different ways. This thesis will investigate and explore the ways in which both of these authors utilize and explore a character’s voice in their literary works.
Mechanisms Of Value-Biased Prioritization In Fast Sensorimotor Decision Making, Kivilcim Afacan-Seref
Mechanisms Of Value-Biased Prioritization In Fast Sensorimotor Decision Making, Kivilcim Afacan-Seref
Dissertations and Theses
In dynamic environments, split-second sensorimotor decisions must be prioritized according to potential payoffs to maximize overall rewards. The impact of relative value on deliberative perceptual judgments has been examined extensively, but relatively little is known about value-biasing mechanisms in the common situation where physical evidence is strong but the time to act is severely limited. This research examines the behavioral and electrophysiological indices of how value biases split-second perceptual decisions and the possible mechanisms underlying the process. In prominent decision models, a noisy but statistically stationary representation of sensory evidence is integrated over time to an action-triggering bound, and value-biases …
Lateralized Temporal Integration Properties Of The Mouse Auditory Cortex, Demetrios Neophytou
Lateralized Temporal Integration Properties Of The Mouse Auditory Cortex, Demetrios Neophytou
Dissertations and Theses
Social communication calls are fleeting, rapidly modulating signals and the ability of the auditory system to perceive such transient signals is a remarkable phenomenon. The mechanism by which the auditory cortex (ACx) is believed to be capable of processing these signals is through recurrent connectivity in the cortical circuits. Recurrent connectivity is proposed to be a possible circuit motif that aids in the processing of these transient signals. Recurrent connectivity is believed to have an effect on the temporal fidelity, the ability to follow a modulating signal, and the recurrent activity, sustained activity following stimulus offset, at the level of …
The Failed Principle Of Reformed Female Politeness – Exploring Tactical Silence And Voices In Jane Austen’S Sense And Sensibility, Punrada Saengsomboon
The Failed Principle Of Reformed Female Politeness – Exploring Tactical Silence And Voices In Jane Austen’S Sense And Sensibility, Punrada Saengsomboon
Dissertations and Theses
The dichotomy between Elinor and Marianne's manners in Jane Austen's 1811 novel Sense and Sensibility is often central to several readings and interpretations of this novel. Based on the debates concerning the culture of politeness in the eighteenth century, some critics see Elinor's social doctrine as the novel celebrated form of polite female manners. However, the paper will argue how the novel instead criticizes the social and intellectual impact this the idealized doctrine of female manners has on young women. The paper will look at three important moments of social interactions in the novel: the party with the Middletons, the …
The Process Of Cultural Appropriation In Literature And How It Can Be Changed, Wendy Meza
The Process Of Cultural Appropriation In Literature And How It Can Be Changed, Wendy Meza
Dissertations and Theses
This paper explores the ways cultural appropriation has existed in literature from the time of Sylvia Plath's poem "Daddy" to the present, with the publication of Jeanine Cummins's novel American Dirt. After dissecting the motives behind the exploitation of traumatic events and acknowledging the consequences appropriation has on the individuals it is portraying, the inclusion of NoViolet Bulawayo's novel We Need New Names proposes a way for contemporary literature to revolve around cultures without silencing voices and allowing individual identities to shine in the texts.

Lps, A Tlr-4 Agonist And Viper A Tlr-4 Inhibitor Upregulate Phagocytosis Of Zymosan In Bv2 Cells, Sherouk Alzeory
Dissertations and Theses
Microglia cells are the first line of innate immunity defense in the central nervous system (CNS). They play a critical role in maintaining CNS homeostasis by having an active but yet balanced phagocytic activity. However, in various CNS related diseases, microglia cells have been shown to malfunction. In Alzheimer's Disease (AD), hyperactive microglia with impaired phagocytic activity is the main hallmark of this disease, along with the accumulation of amyloid-beta aggregates. Additionally, emerging new studies have suggested a fungal infection etiology to AD, specifically in relation to Candida albicans (C.albicans). Thus, understanding the mechanism of fungal clearance in the …
Impacts Of Vegetation Density And Distance From The High Tide Line On Raccoon Predation Of Diamondback Terrapin Nests In Jamaica Bay, Ny – A Preliminary Study, Zvi Teitelbaum
Dissertations and Theses
Diamondback terrapin turtles (Malaclemys terrapin) have been culturally and economically important since at least the nineteenth century. However, due to overharvesting, this became a species of conservation concern. While extensive data are available to describe its natural history, some conditions that impact nest predation are poorly understood. In this exploratory study, vegetation type and distance to the high tide line were examined to determine their potential impact on predation of diamondback terrapin nests by raccoons. For that, terrapin scented water was used to construct 50 artificial nests at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. These artificial nests were placed in …

More Than Meets The Eye: A Taxonomic Revision Of The Nearctic Species In The Eye-Gnat Genus Amiota Loew (Diptera: Drosophilidae), Lance E. Jones
Dissertations and Theses
Thorough biotic inventories are still needed even in families as seemingly well-studied as fruit flies (Diptera: Drosophilidae). Drosophilidae have had an outsize effect on the history of biology because of their pivotal role in the study of genetics, development, and evolution. Even with more than a century of intensive study, large gaps remain in our understanding of diversity in this fly family, including well-studied areas such as North America. This thesis presents a taxonomic revision of the Nearctic species of the genus Amiota Loew. Twenty-three species are identified as being new to science for publication at a later date. This …

Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study is to test the theory that mindfulness is an effective coping strategy for reducing acculturative stress and body dissatisfaction/eating disorder symptoms. It was hypothesized that acculturative stress would be associated with more body dissatisfaction/eating disorder symptoms, but this relation was expected to be moderated by mindfulness. It was also predicted that mindfulness would be associated with less acculturative stress and less body dissatisfaction/eating disorder symptoms. Thirty-eight Latinx students were recruited from The City College of New York, CUNY, through the web-based survey participation pool SONA. Participants answered questions assessing their levels of acculturative stress, mindfulness, …

Ftir Analysis Of Bacteria Biomass-Mineral Interactions In Soils, Finola Fung-Khee
Dissertations and Theses
Soil organic carbon (SOC) accounts for 70% of the carbon on Earth. It is therefore a key player in global carbon cycling and climate change (Smith et al., 2008). Soil organic matter (SOM) is an important component of organic matter in soils (SOC), and results from biogeochemical process involving net primary producers, soil biomass and soil mineralogy (Horwath and Kuzyakov, 2018). In this study, the interplay between soil bacterial biomass and reactive clay minerals in soils was investigated. The purpose of the research was to shed light into the stabilization of SOC in a bacterial biomass-soil/clay matrix. Soils characterized as …

Reductions By Cobalt-Catalyzed Production Of Hydrogen Gas From Nabh4 In A Two-Chamber System, Joshua K. Mitchell
Dissertations and Theses
The work outlined in this thesis describes a bench-scale methodology involving a two-chamber system for conducting catalytic hydrogenation reactions by obtaining hydrogen (H2) gas from stable sodium borohydride (NaBH4). Whereas NaBH4 is widely used for a variety of reductions and is known to produce H2 gas in protic media, to our knowledge, there has been scant use of NaBH4 in catalytic hydrogenation chemistry where it has been used as a source of H2 gas. In this work, addition of a catalytic amount of CoCl2•6H2O as an aqueous solution …
Decision-Making In Reuse Of Highway Bridge Foundations, Ehssan Hoomaan
Decision-Making In Reuse Of Highway Bridge Foundations, Ehssan Hoomaan
Dissertations and Theses
According to the 2019 National Bridge Inventory data from Federal Highway Administration, the average age of highway bridges in the U.S.A. is 45 years, with almost 43% of existing highway bridges being older than 50 years, and eight percent of all U.S. national highway bridges being in poor condition. Foundation and substructure of existing highway bridges (over land and water) may have significant functional values even after being under service for decades. Reusing an existing bridge foundation during the reconstruction of a bridge (e.g., major rehabilitation, retrofitting, replacement of superstructure and substructure, and addition/removal of a span) has the potential …
Attention Strongly Modulates Reliability Of Neural Response To Naturalistic Narrative Stimuli, Jason Ki
Attention Strongly Modulates Reliability Of Neural Response To Naturalistic Narrative Stimuli, Jason Ki
Dissertations and Theses
Attentional engagement is a major determinant of how effectively we gather information through our senses. Alongside the sheer growth in the amount and variety of information content we are presented with through modern media, there is increased variability in the degree to which we ‘absorb’ that information. Traditional research on attention has illuminated the basic principles of sensory selection to isolated features or locations, but it provides little insight into the neural underpinnings of our attentional engagement with modern naturalistic content. Here, we show in human subjects that the reliability of an individual's neural responses with respect to a larger …

Multimodal Data Integration For Real-Time Indoor Navigation Using A Smartphone, Yaohua Chang
Dissertations and Theses
We propose an integrated solution of indoor navigation using a smartphone, especially for assisting people with special needs, such as the blind and visually impaired (BVI) individuals. The system consists of three components: hybrid modeling, real-time navigation, and client-server architecture. In the hybrid modeling component, the hybrid model of a building is created region by region and is organized in a graph structure with nodes as destinations and landmarks, and edges as traversal paths between nodes. A Wi-Fi/cellular-data connectivity map, a beacon signal strength map, a 3D visual model (with destinations and landmarks annotated) are collected while a modeler walks …
Recuperation Of Regenerative Braking Energy In Electric Rail Transit Systems, Mahdiyeh Khodaparastan
Recuperation Of Regenerative Braking Energy In Electric Rail Transit Systems, Mahdiyeh Khodaparastan
Dissertations and Theses
Electric rail transit systems are large consumers of energy. In trains with regenerative braking capability, a fraction of the energy used to power a train is regenerated during braking. This regenerated energy, if not properly captured, is typically dumped in the form of heat to avoid overvoltage. Finding a way to recuperate regenerative braking energy can result in substantial economic as well as technical benefits. Regenerative braking energy can be effectively recuperated using wayside energy storage, reversible substations, or hybrid storage/reversible substation systems. In this research study, we compare these recuperation techniques and investigate their application in New York City …
Influence Graphs For Modeling Of Cascading Failures In Electric Distribution Networks, Muhammad S. Bhatti
Influence Graphs For Modeling Of Cascading Failures In Electric Distribution Networks, Muhammad S. Bhatti
Dissertations and Theses
Power Grids are one of the most intricate systems and greatly affect economic, political, and social aspects of contemporary life. A well-operated power system consists of many control devices and protection methods to prevent the interruption of power to consumers. However, such systems are highly vulnerable to severe events; for instance, natural disasters, cyber-attacks, mal-function of control devices, etc. The occurrence of these odd events may lead to cascading failures, which are prominent contributors to blackouts.
This paper focuses on the development of a cascade model in a distribution network using Newton-Raphson’s power flow method to study the impact of …
Edge Device Speaker Verification, Thomas P. Duffy
Edge Device Speaker Verification, Thomas P. Duffy
Dissertations and Theses
The continued shrinking of processors and other physical hardware in concert with development of embeddable machine learning frameworks has enabled new use cases placing machine learning directly in the “wild”. The problem of speaker verification, for a long time, has been deployed to perform inference on systems with significant computations resources. More recently, these systems have been built for smaller, cheaper devices which can be placed in people's homes or other edge locations. Here, we aim to demonstrate that a reasonably accurate, generalizable, text-independent speaker verification system can be built, trained, and, ultimately, deployed onto a microcontroller with as a …
Toward Closing The Urban Surface Energy Balance Using Satellite Remote Sensing, Joshua Hrisko
Toward Closing The Urban Surface Energy Balance Using Satellite Remote Sensing, Joshua Hrisko
Dissertations and Theses
The energy exchanges at the Earth’s surface are responsible for many of the processes that govern weather, climate, human health, and energy use. This exchange, commonly known as the surface energy balance (SEB), determines the near-surface thermodynamic state by partitioning the available energy into surface fluxes. The net all-wave radiation is often the primary energy source, while the heat storage and sensible and latent heat fluxes account for the majority of energy distributed elsewhere. While the SEB of various natural environments(trees, crops, soils) has been well-observed and modeled, the urban surface energy balance remains elusive. This is due to the …
Effects Of Weak Electric Fields On Long-Term Synaptic Plasticity, Gregory Kronberg
Effects Of Weak Electric Fields On Long-Term Synaptic Plasticity, Gregory Kronberg
Dissertations and Theses
Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a technique where a weak direct electrical current is applied to the scalp with the goal of stimulating the brain. There is tremendous interest in the use of tDCS for treating brain disorders and improving brain function. However, the effects of tDCS have been highly variable across studies, leading to a debate over its efficacy. A major challenge is therefore to design tDCS protocols that yield predictable effects, which will require a better understanding of its basic mechanisms of action. One commonly discussed mechanism is that tDCS may alter synaptic plasticity, but the biophysics …
