Nunc Pauperis Agri: Rural Fantasy And Economic Reality In The Elegies Of Tibullus, Victoria Elizabeth Jansson
Nunc Pauperis Agri: Rural Fantasy And Economic Reality In The Elegies Of Tibullus, Victoria Elizabeth Jansson
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation argues that attention to economic anxieties in Tibullus’ elegies is crucial to understanding his corpus. Concerns about agricultural production, globalized trade, and institutional power recur throughout the elegies. An appreciation of economic desire may not only produce a fruitful reading of Tibullus’ poetry, but also help to answer some of the questions suggested by elegy’s socio-historical framework. This project relies methodologically on both economic analysis and a Lacanian psychoanalytic framework. Additionally, each chapter explores a different facet of religious experience in the elegies: the myth of the Golden Age, prayers to the goddess Ceres, and references to the …
Expressivism And Its (Dis)Contents: Tracing Theory And Practice From History To Here And Now, Sasha A. Maceira
Expressivism And Its (Dis)Contents: Tracing Theory And Practice From History To Here And Now, Sasha A. Maceira
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation explores the theory and practice of expressivism as a pedagogy viable for the twenty-first century. Expressivism, in its inception (1960s), was wrongly perceived in many ways for the seemingly superfluous nature of its intentions; mainly it was targeted as an elitist, individualistic approach to the teaching of composition, only seen as suitable for a privileged student body. What was entirely overlooked that expressivism offered, were the more conventional ideologies and activities, such as process theory and peer review—things we use and cherish to this day. What I discovered through archival research was that expressivism then was inadvertently divided …
Covert Determiners In Appalachian English Narrative Declarative Sentences, William Oliver
Covert Determiners In Appalachian English Narrative Declarative Sentences, William Oliver
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In this thesis, I explore the syntax and semantics of covert determiners (Ds) in matrix subject determiner phrases (DPs) with definite specific interpretations. To conduct my investigation, I used the Audio-Aligned and Parsed Corpus of Appalachian English (AAPCAppE), a million-word Penn Treebank corpus, and the software CorpusSearch, a Java program that searches Penn Treebank corpora. My research shows that Appalachian English contains a linguistic phenomenon where speakers drop the D, replacing overt Ds with covert Ds, in definite specific DPs. For example, where Standard English speakers say The doctor came by horseback, Appalachian speakers may use a covert D …
A Solitary Solidarity: Conditions For Attunement In The "Migration Crisis" In Greece, Katherine Sheese
A Solitary Solidarity: Conditions For Attunement In The "Migration Crisis" In Greece, Katherine Sheese
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In this dissertation I draw on ethnographic field work and qualitative interviews with activist volunteers in Greece in 2016 to explore the conditions for ethical and affective attunement in the face of crisis and complicity. I offer a thick description of the multiple injuries to one’s senses and sensemaking capacities and the contradictions, tensions, dilemmas that undermine the capacity for attunement, a term I use to refer to the overlapping abilities to feel, to be moved, and to locate oneself and to connect to others. I begin by developing a contextual analysis of the complex and contradictory machinery of …
Expanding The Pronominal Account Of Tense: A Reexamination Of The Double Access Reading In English, Brynne E. Wilkinson
Expanding The Pronominal Account Of Tense: A Reexamination Of The Double Access Reading In English, Brynne E. Wilkinson
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In this thesis I will argue that the double access reading in English is not limited to the present-under-past construction but is instead available in the present-under-future construction as well. Unlike the traditional present-under-past construction, however, the double access reading is not the only available reading in the present-under-future construction. I will present data that shows that any context which licenses the double access reading also necessarily licenses a simultaneous reading as a result of a Sequence of Tense rule. Additional data will show that, when interpreted de re, the embedded present tense in the present-under-future construction is constrained …
Time-To-Degree: Bachelor’S Degree Completion For Latine First-Year And Transfer Students, Robert E. Kunicki
Time-To-Degree: Bachelor’S Degree Completion For Latine First-Year And Transfer Students, Robert E. Kunicki
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Latine bachelor’s degree completion has grown in the last several decades but has not kept pace with other racial and ethnic groups. Millions of Latines have successfully navigated higher education, yet not enough is known about the conduits and barriers to timely degree completion. This dissertation utilizes LatCrit, Anti-Deficit Achievement, and Intersectionality as theoretical frameworks; employs secondary analysis of a City University of New York dataset; and utilizes hierarchical regression modeling to examine the relative impact of college completion programs, academic momentum, and key demographic variables on time-to-degree for Latine students. Further, to see how these relationships operate differently for …
Democratic Processing Of Waste: European Federalism And Decentralized Waste Management In Navarra And Basque Country, Michael Stinavage
Democratic Processing Of Waste: European Federalism And Decentralized Waste Management In Navarra And Basque Country, Michael Stinavage
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Every country, regardless of regime-type, produces garbage. Waste is a significant contributor to the climate crisis, and its management requires the participation of society at large. The competency for waste management falls on the most decentralized forms of governance. The local government, however, faces a tremendous difficulty in that it may not be able to realign economic and political incentives to make the sustainable management of post-consumer material a viable option. Using waste policy as a lens to assess climate crisis readiness and federal governance, this study considers Navarra and Basque Country, two of Spain’s most decentralized regions, and creates …
No Excuses Yet No Solutions: The Inherent Anti-Blackness Of The No-Excuses Charter School Model, Tshala A. Pajibo
No Excuses Yet No Solutions: The Inherent Anti-Blackness Of The No-Excuses Charter School Model, Tshala A. Pajibo
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The No Excuses model of education has routinely been labeled abusive and harmful to students. The No Excuses model has garnered significant pushback from students, families, and stakeholders because of procedures and policies that have caused physical, mental, and bodily harm to young students. While many education stakeholders have examined how No Excuses charters and their policies have harmed Black children, not many have examined why. This paper argues that the No Excuses charter model is completely at odds with Black cultural and educational values. This paper suggests deeper studies of the educational mindsets and opinions of No Excuses …
Why, New York City? Gauging The Quality Of Life Through The Thoughts Of Tweeters, Sheryl Williams
Why, New York City? Gauging The Quality Of Life Through The Thoughts Of Tweeters, Sheryl Williams
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
As a resource for social data, Twitter’s platform has been used to measure the quality of life through sentiment analysis. This capstone project explores another methodological technique—querying Twitter data around specific keyword terms to determine dominant topics, word patterns, and sentiment leanings in a geographical area. Focusing on New York City and Los Angeles for comparative analysis, the keyword term “why” will be used to build a Python analysis around topic modeling and sentiment analysis. Using this approach, the analysis reveals social and cultural differences, the overall sentiment of tweets, and subjects of interest to tweeters.

“The Act Of The Paper”: Literacy, Racial Capitalism, And Student Protest In The 1990s, Anna Zeemont
“The Act Of The Paper”: Literacy, Racial Capitalism, And Student Protest In The 1990s, Anna Zeemont
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
A transdisciplinary archival project, this dissertation uses counter-institutional student literacies emanating out of the City University of New York (CUNY) in the 1990s—placing them within much bigger political, educational, and geographic contexts—to think through the dynamics of ground-up resistance in the face of profound, institutionally sanctioned raced-classed dispossession. In this decade, New York and the US were marked by increased racial-economic inequality, notably via intensified policing and incarceration in Black/brown neighborhoods alongside cuts to public resources like schooling. As the city’s only public college option, serving mostly multilingual, low-income students of color, CUNY was especially targeted by such budget cuts. …
Methods In Reverse Transliteration Of English Loanwords In Japanese, Yuying Ren
Methods In Reverse Transliteration Of English Loanwords In Japanese, Yuying Ren
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
We introduce the problem of gairaigo hanran ‘loanwords flood’in Japanese and the difficulties of understanding the loanwords by English speakers who also communicate in Japanese and the necessity of converting the loanwords written in katakana back to English, the reverse transliteration. We analyze the issues for this task and propose using computational methods to solve them. We create our own katakana-English loanwords dictionary as the data and use three computational models --- pair n-gram, LSTM and transformer models to work on this reverse transliteration task. We also modify the three models with an English lexicon filter. The six models are …

Cochlear Implant Evaluations Of Spanish-Speaking Adults, Mariana Mejia Turnbull
Cochlear Implant Evaluations Of Spanish-Speaking Adults, Mariana Mejia Turnbull
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Background. As the Hispanic population in the U.S. continues to increase, audiologists need valid and reliable speech perception materials in Spanish to be able to offer evidence-based, high quality hearing health care to this population. The purpose of this study was to investigate current trends in CI evaluations of Spanish-speaking adults in clinics around the country, with a specific focus on sentence perception tests (Part 1). An additional goal was to analyze and compare the linguistical content of the Spanish sentence perception tests found to be the most commonly used among clinicians (Part 2).
Methods. A questionnaire was created and …

An Overview And Assessment Of The Editorial Assistant Position At Women’S Studies Quarterly, Amy M. Iafrate
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This paper represents the culmination of my internship at Women’s Studies Quarterly, and documents my experience of working from September 2020, to June 2021. I will begin with a discussion of the journal’s historical importance; from its origin in 1972, to its more contemporary issues. This background will segue into a critical analysis of my role at the journal, supported by anecdotes and ideas of critical feminist theorists.
A Machine Learning Approach To Text-Based Sarcasm Detection, Lara I. Novic
A Machine Learning Approach To Text-Based Sarcasm Detection, Lara I. Novic
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Sarcasm and indirect language are commonplace for humans to produce and recognize but difficult for machines to detect. While artificial intelligence can accurately analyze sentiment and emotion in speech and text, it may struggle with insincere and sardonic content, although it is possible to train a machine to identify uttered and written sarcasm. This paper aims to detect sarcasm using logistic regression and a support vector machine (SVM) and compare their results to a baseline.
The models are trained on headlines from a Kaggle dataset containing headlines from the satirical news website The Onion and serious news website Huffpost (formerly …
Cultivation, Conflict, And Consumption: Food Systems In Syria, 1920–1946, Sara Pekow
Cultivation, Conflict, And Consumption: Food Systems In Syria, 1920–1946, Sara Pekow
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation examines Syria during the French Mandate using food as a primary unit of analysis. The exploration of food pushes this project beyond the boundaries of political and diplomatic histories of Syria during the French Mandate, bringing forward the hidden voices of the nonelite. Nonelites are often not visible in archives, but their absence in most written sources permits us to ascertain their experiences in studying the materials that comprised their everyday lives. The sources consulted for this work include memoirs, print media, and state archives, to name a few.

Acculturation Patterns In Childhood/Adolescence, Cultural Stress In Young Adulthood, And Exploring The Moderating Role Of Skin Tone Among Puerto Rican Youth In Two Contexts, Marjorine Henriquez-Castillo
Acculturation Patterns In Childhood/Adolescence, Cultural Stress In Young Adulthood, And Exploring The Moderating Role Of Skin Tone Among Puerto Rican Youth In Two Contexts, Marjorine Henriquez-Castillo
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Demographic changes across the United States (US) indicate that much of the population growth between 2005 to 2050 will be driven by US-born Latinx youth, who will likely face, as the major part of their experience, the challenges of negotiating their heritage and US mainstream cultures from birth. As a result, examining the cultural experiences of Latinx youth is crucial for understanding and promoting the healthy development of a large proportion of the increasingly ethnically and racially diverse US population. Research with Latinx youth suggests that acculturation – the psychological changes associated with navigating two distinct cultures – can be …
Making Sense Of Pre-Symbolic Trauma: A Qualitative Study On The Lived Experiences Of Adults Who Were Born Extremely Prematurely, Noia Efrat
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The psychological experiences of adults (n=5) who were born at or before the threshold for extreme prematurity (weeks) was examined using Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) (Smith, Flowers & Larkin, 2009). Subjects were interviewed to learn about how their extreme prematurity has become organized and integrated on the levels of fantasy, identity and personality. Results showed that dysregulation and the propensity to self-contain on both somatic and affective levels were common themes across cases, supporting current research connecting the ongoing impacts of prematurity to the context of overstimulation and fundamental absence in the first months of life in the NICU. Despite …
The Visionary Mode In Anglophone Modernist Fiction, Wei Wu
The Visionary Mode In Anglophone Modernist Fiction, Wei Wu
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This study is a critical reexamination of descriptions of visionary experiences in the novels of Woolf and Lawrence. Its goal is twofold: first, to demonstrate that the visionary mode, when best practiced by the modernist novelists here discussed, can overcome the ideological liabilities that its supposed individualist stance seems to entail; secondly, based on an updated understanding of the visionary mode, to reconceptualize its relation with the ordinary. Through discussions of five important modernist novels, this study concludes that modernist practicing of the visionary mode, when contextualized and historicized, portrays the subject as situated in dynamic exchanges with otherness, subscribes …
A “Medieval” Myth For A “Modern” Empire Britain Under The Shadow Of Arthur (1461–1612), Julian Gonzalez De Leon Heiblum
A “Medieval” Myth For A “Modern” Empire Britain Under The Shadow Of Arthur (1461–1612), Julian Gonzalez De Leon Heiblum
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation studies the use of the Arthurian myth from the fifteenth through early seventeenth centuries, as a narrative that connected a set of political principles for the unification of Britain and its imperial expansion. Joining other competing political myths in the British archipelago, the political significance of the Arthurian myth has nevertheless been overlooked. On the one hand, the myth informed the transformations of kingship in England and Wales from the crowning of Edward IV to the early years of James’ English reign. It did so specifically within the process of institutionalizing a British crown which was intertwined with …

La Voz Obrera En Chile (1879-1937): Lenguaje Y Escritura De La Clase Trabajadora Chilena En El Proceso De Construcción Nacional, Tania A. Aviles Vergara
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This study examines the linguistic construction of social personae (voice) of the Chilean working class during the process of nation-state formation in the late 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. Specifically, it considers the mediation of writing in processes of identity formation and emerging political stances in a historical context characterized by the intense socioeconomic, linguistic and cultural transformations that took place in Chile during a period of capitalist development and national modernization. The corpus is made up of a set of seventy familiar letters written by soldiers, miners and women who experienced the territorial expansion brought …
Measuring Alignment Between Components Of An Educational System: An Extension Of Porter’S Alignment Index, Joe Kazemi
Measuring Alignment Between Components Of An Educational System: An Extension Of Porter’S Alignment Index, Joe Kazemi
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
At the heart of educational systems worldwide is the idea that components of an educational system (i.e. standards, curricula, instruction, and assessments) need to be in alignment with one other for the system to produce the desired results of improving educational outcomes. Thus, a thorough and reliable methodology for measuring alignment is necessary especially given the escalating use of student assessment results as a determinant of effectiveness for districts, schools and teachers (Ananda, 2003a).
Today, there are two predominant methods for modeling and measuring that alignment: Webb’s methodology (Webb, 1997, 1999), and Porter’s methodology (Porter, 2002, 2006; McMaken & Porter …
The Realization Of The Null Subject Parameter In Greek-American Children And Adults: Anaphora Resolution Patterns In Ambiguous Sentential Structures, Maria Elekidou
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This thesis investigates anaphora resolution patterns of bilingual Greek-American children and adults living in a Greek community of Queens, New York. The purpose of the study is twofold: first, to test aspect effects in discourse structures containing a verb of perception (per Carminati, 2002, and also, Torregrossa et al. 2020), and second, to test whether ambiguous sentences with null subject and overt subject pronoun alterations comply with the Position of the Antecedent Strategy (PAS) in different word order variations. Current work in Modern Greek has focused both on the syntactic and semantic factors that affect anaphora resolution patterns. This experiment …
Mapping Learning Ecologies: A Diffractive Exploration Of The Emergence Of Learning, Laurie Hurson
Mapping Learning Ecologies: A Diffractive Exploration Of The Emergence Of Learning, Laurie Hurson
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In this dissertation, drawing on Karen Barad’s theory of agential realism (2007), I explore the learning ecology as a “specific material configuration” that produces learning, an emergent, “onto-epistemological” phenomenon of entangled being-knowing. I offer a new materialist approach to the learning ecology to better define the concept, taking seriously the material nature of the ecology and acknowledging that learning and knowing is a material practice of being in the world.
To explore learning ecologies, I conducted qualitative interview and mapping sessions with 26 undergraduate students at the City University of New York. To analyze the narrative and visual data, I …
Gay Boy And Playboy Revues: Constructing U.S. Queer Collectivities In Networks Of Peripatetic Burlesque And Nightclub Drag Performers, 1933–1939, Kalle Westerling
Gay Boy And Playboy Revues: Constructing U.S. Queer Collectivities In Networks Of Peripatetic Burlesque And Nightclub Drag Performers, 1933–1939, Kalle Westerling
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Across the United States, in the mid-1930s, drag made a transition, along with much other entertainment, from vaudeville into night clubs. There, concomitant with developing notions of gender and sexuality, it became increasingly associated with the contemporary expressions of drag that we see today in popular television shows like RuPaul’s Drag Race and in gay nightclubs across the country. In short, it became the queer form of entertainment. But in the 1930s, with such developing notions of gender and sexuality, it was not as easy as saying that it was a gay art form. Rather, as heterosexuality and heteronormativity took …
"A Fallen Woman": The Use Of Metaphor In Psychoanalysis, Matthew Schneider
"A Fallen Woman": The Use Of Metaphor In Psychoanalysis, Matthew Schneider
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This study sought to understand the use of a central metaphor in a psychoanalytic treatment and its relationship to the process of change for the analysand. In linguistics, a metaphor is a word, phrase or idea that stands in for another idea. In psychoanalysis the relationship between conscious and unconscious conflictual material can share similar metaphorical connections as conscious thoughts or behavior often stands in for an unconscious wishes. The presence of a word or phrase that appears in speech in the context of particular affective moments in an analysand’s experience could be understood to be linked to unconscious processes …
Gender-Informed Features Of Film Reviews: A Statistical Linguistic Analysis, Matthew Kadish
Gender-Informed Features Of Film Reviews: A Statistical Linguistic Analysis, Matthew Kadish
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The project analyzes how language is used differently in movie reviews based on both the gender of the author of the review as well as the gender of the director of the reviewed film. In doing so, it aims to gain a better understanding of what contexts evoke a typically “masculine” use of language vs. a typically “feminine” use of language within the genre of film criticism, and what implications this has for the state of the film criticism with respect to gender. The results of this study seem to indicate that a critic’s language use takes on the characteristics …
Tracing The Trajectory: Exploring The Origins, Iterations, And Impacts Of The Muslim Travel Ban, Dalia Yousef
Tracing The Trajectory: Exploring The Origins, Iterations, And Impacts Of The Muslim Travel Ban, Dalia Yousef
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The Muslim Travel Ban emerged as an explicitly discriminatory policy when former President Trump signed Executive Order 13769 on January 27, 2017. The first version of the Ban suspended the entry of travelers from seven majority-Muslim countries into the United States. After several iterations, the third version of the ban was upheld by the Supreme Court on June 26, 2018, and only rescinded by a Presidential Executive Order issued by President Joe Biden on January 20, 2021. Although the Ban received significant media attention, it was analyzed by only a few scholarly works utilizing legal and discursive approaches. This thesis …
Indigenous Mexicans In New York City: Immigrant Integration, Language Use, And Identity Formation, Leslie A. Martino-Velez
Indigenous Mexicans In New York City: Immigrant Integration, Language Use, And Identity Formation, Leslie A. Martino-Velez
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
As indigenous Mexican immigrants migrate, settle, and raise families in the United States, parents, particularly women, and their children increasingly have contact with community institutions, such as schools. Despite their growing numbers in U.S. schools, indigenous children, youth, and their parents are often invisible due to their ethnolinguistic identities and undocumented status. Understanding what parents do to help their children is essential to understanding the first generation's integration and their children, the second generation.
To better understand this, I conducted an ethnographic research study at a bilingual Head Start program in New York City, in East Harlem, where many undocumented …
Non-Argumental Clitics In Spanish And Galician: A Case Study Of The Distribution Of Solidarity And Ethical Clitics, Susana Huidobro
Non-Argumental Clitics In Spanish And Galician: A Case Study Of The Distribution Of Solidarity And Ethical Clitics, Susana Huidobro
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation explores the properties of what traditional grammars call “superfluous elements” or non-arguments, so-called Ethical Dative Clitics (Bello 1954, Seco 1962 among others) and Solidarity Clitics (Álvarez, Rosario, X.L. Regueira & H. Monteaguedo 1986) in Spanish and Galician. This research fills an important gap in the existing formal literature on these forms, providing the first thorough syntactic and typological investigation of the latter phenomenon.
The study of non-argumental datives encounters difficulties at different levels: at a descriptive/empirical as well as at a theoretical level. From a descriptive point of view, there are no, so far in the literature, clear …
