On The Stochastic Sequential And Nonsequential Production Planning Problem, Shivaji Rao Jan 1989

On The Stochastic Sequential And Nonsequential Production Planning Problem, Shivaji Rao

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation examines a stochastic sequential and a non-sequential capacitated production planning problem (Bitran and Yanasse, Operations Research, 32, 5, 1984) where the demand of each period is a continuous random variable. The stochastic non-sequential production planning problem is at first examined with sequence independent and then with sequence dependent set-up costs and the worst case error determined when an approximate solution is obtained by solving the deterministic equivalent. We prove in general that the worst case error is not dependent on the nature of the set-up cost. Based on a result due to Huang, Ziemba and Ben-Tal (Operations Research, …

The Relationship Between Family-Environmental Processes And Academic Achievement Among Three Hispanic Groups In The United States, Manuel Martinez-Pons Jan 1988

The Relationship Between Family-Environmental Processes And Academic Achievement Among Three Hispanic Groups In The United States, Manuel Martinez-Pons

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The purpose of this study was to examine (1) whether differences in academic achievement exist among students of three Hispanic groups in the United States, (2) whether such differences are related to student achievement processes, and (3) whether differences in both student academic achievement and achievement processes are related to their parents' background characteristics.

The three Hispanic groups of students that were studied were Puerto Rican, Cuban, and Central/South American. Two student achievement processes were examined: their time spent on homework and their educational-occupational aspirations. The three parental achievement processes investigated were their press for English, press for independence and …

Prediction Of Treatment Response In Chronic Pain Patients: The Relationship Between Illness Behavior And Self-Concept, Andrew Bruce Rosenblum Jan 1988

Prediction Of Treatment Response In Chronic Pain Patients: The Relationship Between Illness Behavior And Self-Concept, Andrew Bruce Rosenblum

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This study investigated self-concepts held by chronic pain patients. It was hypothesized that self schemas of probable and ideal levels of control, dependence on medical care, physical vulnerability, affiliation and conflict with physicians would predict response to treatment.

At intake into a three week in-patient program 72 pain patients were given a self perception scale which measured these five dimensions across three "possible selves" (now self, probable self and ideal self). Patients were also given at intake, and at follow-up (5 weeks after discharge), a battery of psychological and behavioral measures. Control, dependence on medical care, and vulnerability (CDV) were …

Cold Type: Computerized Typesetting And Occupational Subcultures In The New York City Newspaper Industry, Eve Fay Hochwald Jan 1988

Cold Type: Computerized Typesetting And Occupational Subcultures In The New York City Newspaper Industry, Eve Fay Hochwald

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Using a framework drawn from recent social science discussions of the labor process and from the anthropological literature on culture as the generative basis through which people adapt to or transform their social circumstances, this dissertation analyses the changes occurring in the occupational subcultures and political organization of printers, journalists, and computer service workers in the New York City newspaper industry since the introduction of computerized typesetting in the mid-1970s. One consequence has been a restructured labor force, entailing a shift of skilled, traditionally male, manual craft jobs to, on the one hand, clerical "women's work," and, on the other, …

A Comparison Of The Symbolic Function In Delicate Self-Mutilators With Joyce Mcdougall's Conceptualization Of The Symbolic Function In Psychosomatic Illness And Sexual Perversion, Thomas Richard Negron Jan 1988

A Comparison Of The Symbolic Function In Delicate Self-Mutilators With Joyce Mcdougall's Conceptualization Of The Symbolic Function In Psychosomatic Illness And Sexual Perversion, Thomas Richard Negron

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The syndrome of delicate self-mutilation is reviewed with emphasis on the psychoanalytic interpretations that have been offered to explain this behavior. These interpretations generally find a symbolic meaning in this symptom, while also noting the pre-verbal level of development that is a marked aspect of these patient's functioning. The alternate hypothesis is offered that delicate self-mutilators suffer from a deficit in their capacity to create symbolic symptoms.

The work of Joyce McDougall with patients manifesting sexual perversions and psychosomatic symptomology is reviewed. She hypothesizes that these patients suffer a deficit in their capacity for symbolic functioning, and she coins the …

Attitudes About Disabled People And Evaluations Of A Disabled Or Nondisabled Task Partner After Success Or Failure, Joan Weisenfeld Bailey Jan 1988

Attitudes About Disabled People And Evaluations Of A Disabled Or Nondisabled Task Partner After Success Or Failure, Joan Weisenfeld Bailey

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This study examined the issue of ambivalence-induced behavioral amplification as applied to physically disabled individuals. The theory maintains that: (a) attitudes toward the disabled tend to be ambivalent rather than hostile, sympathetic or indifferent; (b) under certain conditions behavior toward disabled individuals may be more extreme than behavior toward nondisabled individuals; and (c) the extreme behavior is mediated by individual differences in ambivalence about disabled people in general. These three notions were tested. Internally consistent, independent scales of pro and anti attitudes toward the physically disabled were developed, supporting the notion of a high potentiality for ambivalence in attitudes toward …

The Politics Of Experience: Robert Morris, Minimalism, And The 1960s, Maurice Berger Jan 1988

The Politics Of Experience: Robert Morris, Minimalism, And The 1960s, Maurice Berger

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Robert Morris's oeuvre, unlike the work of most other so-called minimalist artists, is both stylistically and intellectually diverse. His range was broad: expressionist paintings, Duchamp-inspired objects, dances and performances, minimalist sculptures, large scale installations and sound environments, earth and land reclamation works, films and videos, and political acts against the museum, the labor economy, and the Vietnam war. The philosophical sources for Morris's art (he was a philosophy major at Reed College in the late-1950s) are equally rich: Herbert Marcuse, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Michel Foucault, Jean Piaget, Ludwig Wittgenstein, and Charles Sanders Peirce. As choreographer, writer of influential theoretical texts, and …

Feminist Theory And Postwar American Drama, Gayle Austin Jan 1988

Feminist Theory And Postwar American Drama, Gayle Austin

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation is concerned with developing feminism as a critical tool, to be applied to drama. Feminist theory from anthropology, psychology, literary criticism, and film theory is summarized and one theorist from each field is selected to serve as an example of how feminism in that field can illuminate drama written by both women and men.

I begin by outlining the three chronological stages of feminist criticism: (1) Images of women; (2) Women writers; and (3) The questioning of an entire field. The various political divisions of feminism (liberal, radical, and socialist) also need to be kept in mind, and …

Israeli, Palestinian And Egyptian Explanations Of Political Actions In The Middle East, Bethamie Horowitz Jan 1987

Israeli, Palestinian And Egyptian Explanations Of Political Actions In The Middle East, Bethamie Horowitz

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This study investigated how people affiliated with different parties in an international conflict understand their own actions and the actions of their adversaries. Using data gathered in the Middle East in 1982, the study examined the explanations offered by 1336 Israeli Jews, Palestinians (living in Israel) and Egyptians to three political events in the Middle East: 'Israeli Air Force conducts a raid on Beirut,' 'Palestinians attack a bus on the Haifa-Tel Aviv highway,' and 'A peace treaty is announced between Israel and Egypt.'

The study, an exploratory analysis, was carried out in a sequence of stages. First, the analysis involved …

Ives On His Own Terms: An Explication, A Theory Of Pitch Organization, And A New Critical Edition For The "3-Page Sonata", Carol Kitzes Baron Jan 1987

Ives On His Own Terms: An Explication, A Theory Of Pitch Organization, And A New Critical Edition For The "3-Page Sonata", Carol Kitzes Baron

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Ives's musical vision is tied to the expression of programmatic content. He believed that all music is program music. The first part of this study, "An Explication," shows how the extramusical dimensions are articulated in the formal design of the music. The formal, motivic, textural, and tonal techniques relate to the program. The program for the 3-Page Sonata is found in three literary sources: a note Ives pinned to his copy of the first edition, the marginal notes on the composing score, and "Memo 5" from Ives's Memos, which contains a parody of the writing of the critic W. J. …

Revolutions Off Off Broadway, 1959-1969: A Critical Study Of Changes In Structure, Character, Language, And Theme In Experimental Drama In New York City, Alexis Greene Jan 1987

Revolutions Off Off Broadway, 1959-1969: A Critical Study Of Changes In Structure, Character, Language, And Theme In Experimental Drama In New York City, Alexis Greene

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze and categorize the approaches to structure, character, language, and theme that make the dramaturgy of certain playwrights writing for the Off Broadway theatre during the 1960s revolutionary in contrast to the dramaturgy of the majority of American playwrights of the 1950s. The playwrights under discussion include George Birimisa, Kenneth Bernard, Kenneth Brown, Rosalyn Drexler, Grant Duay, Tom Eyen, Maria Irene Fornes, Paul Foster, John Guare, A. R. Gurney, Jr., William M. Hoffman, Kenneth Koch, Charles Ludlam, Murray Mednick, Joel Oppenheimer, Rochelle Owens, Tom Sankey, Sam Shepard, David Starkweather, Ronald Tavel, Megan Terry, …

The Impact Of Presentence Investigations On Plea Bargained Dispositions In Kings County Supreme Court, Joseph G. Enright Jan 1987

The Impact Of Presentence Investigations On Plea Bargained Dispositions In Kings County Supreme Court, Joseph G. Enright

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This study examines the presentence function of probation from an historical and empirical perspective which argues that the purported diminution of the role of the presentence report (PSR) in the sentencing process–as a result of sentence bargaining–is more reflective of a prevailing disenchantment with the rehabilitative ideal than any thoroughly considered, reliable validation of the PSR's dispensibility. It is demonstrated, through a review of the literature, that poorly conceived, polemically biased empirical research has helped to perpetuate the notion that these reports have little value. A survey of studies and inquiries conducted in New York over the past twenty years …

Precursors Of Creativity: Metaphor, Symbolic Play And Categorization In Early Childhood, Jay A. Seitz Jan 1987

Precursors Of Creativity: Metaphor, Symbolic Play And Categorization In Early Childhood, Jay A. Seitz

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Four and 6-year-olds were presented with seven different types of metaphorical relationships in both pictures and words. The core task consisted of a metaphor comprehension task of identical triads (target, nonliteral match, literal match) comprising perceptual/color, perceptual/shape, physiognomic, cross-modal, collectional, psychophysical and taxonomic matches. Children matched items based either on nonliteral similarity or literal contiguity. A series of symbolic play tasks were given to half the subjects at each age group and were hypothesized to facilitate the comprehension of metaphor because of an underlying structural similarity common to systems of reference invoked in both the act of metaphor comprehension and …

Voice-Leading Patterns In The Fugal Expositions Of J. S. Bach's "Well-Tempered Clavier", William Jonathan Michael Renwick Jan 1987

Voice-Leading Patterns In The Fugal Expositions Of J. S. Bach's "Well-Tempered Clavier", William Jonathan Michael Renwick

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Although Heinrich Schenker's theory of tonal music goes very far towards uniting the traditionally independent domains of counterpoint and harmony, it does not deal directly or deeply with the connective role which imitative texture often plays in this synthesis. The obligations inherent in a canonic or fugal texture may limit compositional choices, but they also provide an underpinning of control and direction to voice leading. This dissertation demonstrates the structural role of imitation in tonal music by comparative analysis of a selected body of imitative music: the fugues of J. S. Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier.

A consistent and close interrelationship exists …

A Muted Cry: White Opposition To The Japanese Exclusion Movement, 1911–1924, Bruce A. Abrams Jan 1987

A Muted Cry: White Opposition To The Japanese Exclusion Movement, 1911–1924, Bruce A. Abrams

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This study identifies the missionary-related leadership of the Federal Council of Churches, and its lay pacifist and internationalist supporters, as the most significant opposition to the anti-Japanese immigration movement in the period from the Gentlemen's Agreement of 1907 to the exclusion legislation of 1924. Sidney L. Gulick (1860-1945), as a missionary on furlough and executive secretary of the F.C.C.'s Commission on International Justice and Goodwill, provided cohesion to this effort through his proposal for comprehensive immigration and naturalization reform. His program of reform centered on removal of racial barriers to naturalization and the universal application of immigration restrictions based on …

Eustache Deschamps' "L'Art De Dictier", Deborah M. Sinnreich Jan 1987

Eustache Deschamps' "L'Art De Dictier", Deborah M. Sinnreich

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

L'Art de dictier, written in 1392 by the prolific courtier-poet Eustache Deschamps, is the first ars poetica ever written in French. It provides invaluable insights into medieval poetics as perceived by a respected medieval poet.

L'Art de dictier is composed of two sections: a brief introductory liberal arts treatise and a prescriptive poetics devoted to the lyric. In the introduction, music is divided into two sub-categories. Deschamps calls instrumental music "artificial music" because he feels it can be taught to anyone. "Natural music," in contrast, is poetry, for only those who are inspired to compose it can do so. …

Social Security, Savings, And Labor Supply Of The Elderly In Japan, Tetsuji Yamada Jan 1987

Social Security, Savings, And Labor Supply Of The Elderly In Japan, Tetsuji Yamada

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The study examines the controversial, inconsistent empirical results of the effect of social security on personal savings and analyzes the interdependency in the context of social security between the personal savings and labor supply behavior of elderly workers.

Very few studies in this field have been done, and it has not theoretically and empirically been accomplished yet in Japan. Time-series data are used for 1946-1982, and the methods of technique are ordinary least squares and a simultaneous-equation model in the life cycle framework.

The study finds that social security affects personal savings and that the benefit effect dominates the retirement …

The Experience Of Public Art In Urban Settings, Roberta Degnore Jan 1987

The Experience Of Public Art In Urban Settings, Roberta Degnore

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The sine qua non for an artwork in the urban realm is neither its judged "goodness" nor the ability of audiences to perceive it "correctly," but is the total experience the work contributes to as part of the fabric of interlocking meanings that places have in people's lives.

In urban settings, the physical attributes and private intentionality of a work do not stand alone. As carefully as an artist installs his/her pieces in a gallery, the same concern for their working together and with their total environment must be applied to artworks in complex public settings, where choice to be …

An Analysis Of Roberto Gerhard's "Libra", Jeffrey Lynn Miller Jan 1987

An Analysis Of Roberto Gerhard's "Libra", Jeffrey Lynn Miller

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Libra (1968), for mixed chamber ensemble, is one of the last works by the Anglo-Spanish composer Roberto Gerhard (1896-1970). Analysis of this work reveals that it employs a variety of compositional techniques, including pitch cells, serialism, folk elements, and structures based primarily on texture and timbre. This multiplicity of means reflects Gerhard's background, which included beginnings in Spanish nationalism and later work as a pupil of Arnold Schoenberg. Libra is unified through the dramatic combination of the various elements, the use of a limited number of motives, and the possible influence of a secret autobiographical program.

Sinfonia Brevis. A work …

Gestus In The Theaters Of Brecht And Beckett, Barry Joseph Batorsky Jan 1987

Gestus In The Theaters Of Brecht And Beckett, Barry Joseph Batorsky

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation asserts that the gest is the benchmark of Brecht's theater and is a basic element of the Beckettian vision. Part one defines the gest for Brecht's work. Chapter one of part one distinguishes gestic drama from other forms. The gest, understood as a historically significant comportment, proves incompatible with traditional plot and character structures. Chapter two suggests that gestic comportments loosen drama's connection to topics. Mother Courage is not about the horrors of war, but about how society chooses war. Chapter four contrasts the gestic, "typical"-event drama to events-of-character dramas. The distinction is then developed to explain Brecht's …

Parsing Routines In Syntactic Processing: The Effect Of Expected Word Order On Sentence Comprehension, Ann Dibella Jablon Jan 1986

Parsing Routines In Syntactic Processing: The Effect Of Expected Word Order On Sentence Comprehension, Ann Dibella Jablon

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Two experiments were conducted to test the SVO Expectancy Hypothesis. This hypothesis embodies three claims: (a) the syntactic parsing device has an initial expectation for the SVO (syntactically defined) structure, (b) the parser reads or tracks the syntactic information in the utterance to confirm or adjust its predictions, and (c) the parser has the ability to make on-line revisions based on the syntactic information contained within the utterance.

In the first experiments using tachistoscopic presentation, 75 sentences representing 15 different sentence types were read by subjects. Each type varied in structure and in the clarity of markers, used to indicate …

Linear Analysis Of Selected Posttonal Works Of Arnold Schoenberg: Toward An Application Of Schenkerian Concepts To Music Of The Posttonal Era (And) String Quartet, No. 2 (Original Composition), Edward M. Smaldone Jan 1986

Linear Analysis Of Selected Posttonal Works Of Arnold Schoenberg: Toward An Application Of Schenkerian Concepts To Music Of The Posttonal Era (And) String Quartet, No. 2 (Original Composition), Edward M. Smaldone

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The analysis of posttonal music is approached through a method (which originated with Henry Weinberg) utilizing Schenker's approach to tonal music as a conceptual model. This method differs from all other methods of analysis in that voice leading is combined with a unique approach to nontonal harmony. The presentation of the analytical method is given a historical perspective through the analysis of "Jimbo's Lullaby," by Debussy. There follows detailed analyses of Op. 15 no. 1 (The Book of the Hanging Gardens) and Six Little Piano Pieces, Op. 19 by Arnold Schoenberg.

Part II of the dissertation is an …

Working At Home And Being At Home: The Interaction Of Microcomputers And The Social Life Of Households, Jamie Horwitz Jan 1986

Working At Home And Being At Home: The Interaction Of Microcomputers And The Social Life Of Households, Jamie Horwitz

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Not until the recent upsurge of interest in microcomputers and home work has attention been devoted to the household as a setting for technical learning and invention, or organizational and independent work. Drawing upon theoretical implications of research on industrial technology and the household, this study contributes to the development of an empirical basis for understanding the first ten years of microcomputer use at home.

The environmental approach to this psychological study includes two stages. In the first, a survey and content analysis of over 400 articles in mainstream periodicals and national newspapers revealed that since 1976 the representation of …

Viewers' Perceptions Of Gender Roles On Television, Susan Barbara Prager Jan 1986

Viewers' Perceptions Of Gender Roles On Television, Susan Barbara Prager

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation develops and applies a method for studying viewers' perceptions of gender roles on television. Two hypotheses–selective perception and oversocialization–were tested. In contrast to other studies which rely on subjects' long-term memories, subjects were shown a tape of One Day at a Time, a popular television show, immediately prior to responding to a questionnaire on the show. Subjects were also asked for demographic data and administered the Demplewolff Sex Role Attitude Test. T-Tests and correlations were done, using groups formed around the sex role attitudes of the subjects (as measured by the Demplewolff Sex Role Attitude Test), as …

Structural And Topological Contributions To The Electronic Properties Of Inhomogeneous Media (Fractal, Electrode, Impedance), Michael Kramer Jan 1986

Structural And Topological Contributions To The Electronic Properties Of Inhomogeneous Media (Fractal, Electrode, Impedance), Michael Kramer

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Recent theoretical developments in the theory of inhomogeneous media have enabled Physicists to explore various properties of random composites. We demonstrate how these techniques can be applied to the treatment of electrochemical systems, specifically porous structures. A Random Network Model is introduced to represent the porous electrode immersed in electrolyte, and using numerical simulation the a.c. impedance behavior of the system is explored. We explore how various compositional and structural parameters contribute to the electrical properties of the system. The topology of our model is analyzed, and the effect of fractal structures on impedance behavior is considered. To examine the …

Aspects Of Mitochondrial Oxidative Metabolism, Leslie Kushner Jan 1985

Aspects Of Mitochondrial Oxidative Metabolism, Leslie Kushner

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The effects of metabolic intermediates and coenzymes on the activities of fatty acyl-CoA synthetase and carnitine palmitoyltransferase (CPT) in rat heart mitochondria were studied. ADP and palmitoyl-l-carnitine were weak inhibitors of fatty acyl-CoA synthetase. CPT A was inhibited 59.3% by 100 (mu)M succinyl-CoA. However, succinate thiokinase activity in rat heart cytosol was too low to maintain a succinyl-CoA concentration sufficient to affect the activity of CPT A. There was no indication that fatty acid oxidation in rat heart mitochondria is controlled via the regulation of either CPT A or fatty acyl-CoA synthetase.

The dependence of the oxidation of unsaturated fatty …
