Social Order And Contest In Meanings And Power: Black Boycotts Against Korean Shopkeepers In Poor New York City Neighborhoods, Jeongduk Yi
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation aims to provide an analysis of the process of social reproduction revealed through the conflict between Korean shopkeepers and poor Black inner city residents in New York City. The major concepts, discussed in the introduction, include culture, power, domination, resistance, and conceptual orders.
The pervasive racism and capitalism in America provides the context where the two minority groups have been constituted and where opposing meanings are contested as the conflict between Korean shopkeepers and poor Blacks develops. State agents, Whites, and news media also join in the process of the conflict. They contest with various combinations of coercion, …
The Romance Of Narrative: Design And Desire In The Odyssey, The Aithiopika, And Don Quixote, Susan Brockman
The Romance Of Narrative: Design And Desire In The Odyssey, The Aithiopika, And Don Quixote, Susan Brockman
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The Odyssey, Aithiopika, and Quixote have a surprising set of narrative structures in common: each work falls into two distinct "halves," and each includes a large number of interpolated narratives which appear largely, though not exclusively, in the first half of the text. Both of these features–the bi-partite frames and the large number of interpolated tales–have important implications, both for the narratives as a whole, and for their relationship to the literary mode of romance. This structure imbues each text with a quality of extreme narrative self-consciousness in which part of the subject of the work becomes the …
Richard Nixon's Position On Communist China, 1949-1960: The Evolution Of A Pacific Strategy, Glenn Michael Speer
Richard Nixon's Position On Communist China, 1949-1960: The Evolution Of A Pacific Strategy, Glenn Michael Speer
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation focuses on Richard Nixon's view of Communist China from the 1949 Revolution through the 1960 presidential election. There is also an extended epilogue examining his position on the issue in the 1960s prior to his election as president, and a discussion of the opening to China in 1972.
It is, in essence, an attempt to trace Nixon's "education," so to speak, in the foreign policy arena during his early career–a "gestation" period, if you will, for his presidential China policy. This is discussed within the context of the Cold War and the never ending melodrama of domestic politics, …
The Application Of Liquid Junctions For Characterization Of Semiconductor Materials, Wu-Mian Shen
The Application Of Liquid Junctions For Characterization Of Semiconductor Materials, Wu-Mian Shen
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In this study, liquid junctions were used to characterize silicon and silicon subjected to various reactive ion etching (RIE); surface optimization of CuInSe{dollar}\sb2{dollar}; and photo-modification of InSe. Impedance spectroscopy and modulation spectroscopies such as electrolyte electroreflectance (EER), photoreflectance (PR), and photoreflectance in the presence of electrolyte (EPR) were the major methodologies that were used for investigating the dielectric properties of the semiconductors and their interface with the ambients. It was shown that the above experimental techniques provide information about the flat-band potential, doping density, Fermi level pinning, the density and distribution of surface states, energy gap and broadening parameter related …
Elite Reproduction And Ethnic Identity In Belize, Karen Judd
Elite Reproduction And Ethnic Identity In Belize, Karen Judd
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation examines the construction and representation of ethnic identity by elite groups over time in Belize, focusing on the creole middle class of the late 19th century. It analyzes the formation and reproduction of local white, creole, and "Spanish" elites in terms of their economic and social locations as well as through the reproduction over several generations of representative elite families. It looks particularly at the role of the colonial authorities in differentially shaping economic and social options and constraints for each group, as well as at the efforts of different groups to insert themselves into this process. Through …
Acting Hysteria: An Analysis Of The Actress And Her Part, Lydia Stryk
Acting Hysteria: An Analysis Of The Actress And Her Part, Lydia Stryk
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation examines the woman's part in dramatic representation as a hysterical construct and explores the hystericizing effect that the playing of this construct has on the actress. Drawing on feminist psychoanalytic analyses of male psychology and on the historical origins of male-invented female hysteria, this study uses dramatic representation as a model and metaphor for woman's hystericization in Western culture.
Charcot's theatricalization of female hysteria through public performances of hysterical acts and the Ophelia as psychological/aesthetic model in British mental asylums are investigated as metaphorical sources for a new definition of female hysteria as a disease of performance, of …
The Politics Of Memorialization: Creating A Holocaust Memorial Museum In New York City, Rochelle G. Saidel
The Politics Of Memorialization: Creating A Holocaust Memorial Museum In New York City, Rochelle G. Saidel
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This study of how government intervention affects the implementation of a project of an interest group analyzes the political processes of the 45 year impasse in completing a major Holocaust memorial in New York City. Using as a case study the 1981-1991 effort to create such a project, the study develops a new concept for analyzing long-term public-private projects. This study develops and uses a so-called Mutagon to analyze the complicated and changing political coalition that has endeavored for ten years to create a Holocaust museum.
The Mutagon concept augments existing interest group theories, (e.g., iron triangle and issue network …
The Poetics Of Authorship In The Later Middle Ages: The Emergence Of The Modern Literary Persona, Burt Joseph Kimmelman
The Poetics Of Authorship In The Later Middle Ages: The Emergence Of The Modern Literary Persona, Burt Joseph Kimmelman
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Literary individualism manifested itself in the twelfth century both trivially and profoundly. Word puzzles and overt self-naming within a literary work, and discussions of the nature of poetry and the role of the poet in the world, increasingly considered the purpose and efficacy of writing and ultimately of language per se. Poets asserted themselves in their works not so much for the sake of self-promotion, in a modern sense, but to address and modulate contemporary intellectual and spiritual issues. Speculative grammar, nominalism and realism, often provided the material for poets such as Guillem IX, Marcabru, Dante, Chaucer and Langland. As …
The Dynamics Of Program Development: A Case Study In Urban Mental Health Services, John Kastan
The Dynamics Of Program Development: A Case Study In Urban Mental Health Services, John Kastan
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This study describes the planning, development and implementation of the on-site school mental health program, an innovative mental health services program for schoolchildren in New York City. The program, developed jointly by the New York City Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation, and Alcoholism Services and the New York City Board of Education in 1982, was fully implemented in 1986. This study uses data gathered via the method of participant-observation (the author was employed by the Department of Mental Health), supplemented by the review of documents and discussions with key individuals.
The study begins by providing background on the two …
Pygmalion Goes To School: The Effects Of Goal Setting, The Self-Fulfilling Prophecy And Self-Efficacy On Trainee Performance, James Michael Benton
Pygmalion Goes To School: The Effects Of Goal Setting, The Self-Fulfilling Prophecy And Self-Efficacy On Trainee Performance, James Michael Benton
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This study examined the effectiveness of motivation techniques for increasing performance in a skill training program. A PC based software program provided structured training to increase subjects' typing skills. Motivation was manipulated by the use of goal setting and the self-fulfilling prophecy (SFP), alone and in combination. The moderating effects of self-efficacy on motivation, defined as a generalized "can do" personality orientation, were also examined. Two levels of goal setting were employed: (1) "do your best"; and, (2) a difficult, specific goal. The SFP was tied to the situation, not the person. It was invoked by informing subjects that the …
Taxi Driving: A Study Of Leasing In New York City, Allen Russell Stevens
Taxi Driving: A Study Of Leasing In New York City, Allen Russell Stevens
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This study uses ethnography, survey research and organizational analysis to examine the impact that taxicab leasing has had upon the occupational, social and personal lives of fleet taxicab drivers. Ethnography has been conducted at the Yellow Taxi Company (a pseudonym for a major taxicab fleet garage in New York City); 408 surveys were completed by fleet drivers, and 50 interviews were conducted (30 with lessees 10 with management at various garages and 10 with local 3036 taxi union personnel). And organizational analysis was used in the description of how the shift from the commission remuneration system to the lease remuneration …
Structural And Functional Studies Of The Tryptophan Operon Of Bacillus Pumilus, Miriam V. Rivas
Structural And Functional Studies Of The Tryptophan Operon Of Bacillus Pumilus, Miriam V. Rivas
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The nucleotide sequence of the trpE, trpD, and 5’trpC genes of the Bacillus pumilus tryptophan operon was determined for a comparative evaluation. DNA comparisons to the tryptophan operon of a related species, Bacillus subtilis, showed 66% base homology. The overlapping of translational start and stop signals indicate that, similar to Escherichia coli, the trpE, trpD, and trpC genes of the B.pumilus trp operon are translationally coupled. The values for amino acid identity between the two Bacilli showed 68, 62, and 65% for trpE, trpD and 5’trpC genes, respectively. Charge related residues …
Claes Oldenburg: Sculpture, 1960-1968. A Catalogue Raisonne. (Volumes I And Ii), Susan Ginsburg
Claes Oldenburg: Sculpture, 1960-1968. A Catalogue Raisonne. (Volumes I And Ii), Susan Ginsburg
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
A catalogue raisonne presents the complete work of an artist so that we can better understand that artist and the period in which he or she worked. This dissertation presents all the sculptural works made by Claes Oldenburg between 1960 and 1968. I begin with the works of 1960 and continue through 1968. Although no chronological time period can be demonstrated as absolute, this one begins with an exhibition in which Oldenburg became noticed to a wide audience and ends when Oldenburg's ideas about sculpture became involved with public statements made through public sculpture rather than the studio/home/gallery themes that …
The Psychological Determinants Of Occupational And Non-Occupational Risk-Taking Among Law Enforcement Officers, William F. Mccarthy
The Psychological Determinants Of Occupational And Non-Occupational Risk-Taking Among Law Enforcement Officers, William F. Mccarthy
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The goal of this study was to identify and statistically examine the psychological determinants of risk-taking among law enforcement officers. This study was conceptualized and designed on a rather simple premise that risk-taking in one's leisure would have a dramatic and predominant influence on the grouping of subjects into definable personality trait categories. The suspicion regarding these categories was that subjects who engaged in risk-taking in their leisure time would be distinctively different from all other emerging groups, with regard to the 16 PF Cattell factors. It was also suspected that this leisure time risk-taking group's personality profile would be …
Class Culture And Generational Change: Immigrant Families In Two Connecticut Industrial Cities During The 1930s, Ivan Greenberg
Class Culture And Generational Change: Immigrant Families In Two Connecticut Industrial Cities During The 1930s, Ivan Greenberg
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Recent social history stresses the autonomy of workers, especially the ways that immigrant families made "lives of their own." However, little attention is focused on the particular experiences of the second generation and the ways they forged their own group identity. This study, by locating the emergence of this generation, highlights an important demographic change within the working class.
Familiar developments of the 1930s take on new meaning. For example, the pivotal role of the second generation in the rise of the CIO helps to recast the early history of industrial unionism. The resurgence of the labor movement parallels the …
Biological Activity And Conformational Analysis Of Nikkomycins And Their Analogs, Eduardo Krainer
Biological Activity And Conformational Analysis Of Nikkomycins And Their Analogs, Eduardo Krainer
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Nikkomycins and polyoxins are peptidyl nucleoside antibiotics produced by Streptomyces species. They are potent inhibitors of chitin synthetases from pathogenic fungi, and polyoxins have been used in Japan for many years as agricultural fungicides and for insect control. Since chitin synthetase is not found in mammals and both families of antibiotics are not toxic, these inhibitors are potentially attractive for clinical use. Unfortunately these compounds seem to have only a fungistatic action, and they are not used clinically at present.
A procedure for efficiently obtaining nikkomycins X and Z of very high purity from crude antibiotic is described. These nikkomycins …
The Changing Face Of Fortune In Six English Versions Of The Tragedy Of Antony And Cleopatra, Mary Aileen Mallery
The Changing Face Of Fortune In Six English Versions Of The Tragedy Of Antony And Cleopatra, Mary Aileen Mallery
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This study traces the development and changes in the depiction of the goddess Fortune in a selected group of dramas written between 1592 and 1678: the six English versions of the tragedy of Antony and Cleopatra. The concepts surrounding the goddess Fortune and her place in any culture change with the idea of the individual's ability to shape his own destiny. In the seventeenth century in particular Fortune becomes increasingly connected to questions of personal identity and what Stephen Greenblatt has called "self-fashioning," so that by 1678 the subject of John Dryden's All for Love is not the quest for …
Influences Of The Post-World War Ii Era On The American Political Theater, 1968–1972, Lydia Alix Gerson
Influences Of The Post-World War Ii Era On The American Political Theater, 1968–1972, Lydia Alix Gerson
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
From 1968 to 1972, years which many historians have determined as encompassing the most focussed characteristics of the Sixties as a whole, the United States underwent enormous political upheaval which affected every one of its major institutions, including the theater. The political turmoil of the period was reflected in the theater, both mainstream and alternative. Literally hundreds of political theater pieces were produced and acted in the streets, shopping malls, church basements and stages of the United States. Yet little scholarly attention has been paid to the phenomenon. What little work is available concentrates on aesthetics; content is largely ignored. …
The American Academy Of The Fine Arts, New York, 1802-1842. (Volumes I And Ii), Carrie J. Rebora
The American Academy Of The Fine Arts, New York, 1802-1842. (Volumes I And Ii), Carrie J. Rebora
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In 1802, Robert R. Livingston, the United States Minister to France, conceived of the American Academy as a salon that would inspire American artists and uplift the minds of others. His brother Edward, Mayor of New York who also believed that the city's leaders were responsible for the cultural enlightenment of artists and the general public, generated financial support from the city's ruling elite. Neither the Livingstons nor the members, however, planned for the Academy's operation. The institution languished until Mayor De Witt Clinton assumed the Academy presidency in 1813. With the help of his friend John Pintard, Clinton placed …
Improvisation For Actor Training And Performance In 20th Century America (With Special Emphasis On The Spolin And Sills Tradition), Jeff David Brone
Improvisation For Actor Training And Performance In 20th Century America (With Special Emphasis On The Spolin And Sills Tradition), Jeff David Brone
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation explores the methods and value of using improvisation to train actors in their craft and to help them perform scripted material more effectively. The period and place covered is primarily America in the 20th century. The dissertation also analyzes the use of improvisation from a theoretical, historical and practical perspective and discusses the work of various acting teachers and companies who use (or used) improv to create theatre and who have been influenced by the basic teachings of Spolin, Sills or, in some significant instances, Stanislavski.
After a brief introductory chapter on the use of improv in the …
Conflicting Attributions In The Continental Motet Repertory From Ca. 1500 To Ca. 1550, Young-Han Hur
Conflicting Attributions In The Continental Motet Repertory From Ca. 1500 To Ca. 1550, Young-Han Hur
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This study attempts to bring together all the conflicting attributions in the motets attributed to composers who worked on the Continent during the first half of the sixteenth century. In all, it accounts for a total of 266 motets (listed in the Inventory, Appendix A) that involve conflicting attributions among 122 composers. Rather than placing the emphasis on the problem of determining the correct authorship, however, I have used the conflicting attributions as a springboard in order to shed light on a number of different aspects of sixteenth-century music.
Chapter I briefly surveys conflicting attributions in various genres from ca. …
Visual-Spatial And Set-Shifting Functions In Patients With Parkinson's Disease, Sarah A. Raskin
Visual-Spatial And Set-Shifting Functions In Patients With Parkinson's Disease, Sarah A. Raskin
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) (N=20) were compared to age and education-matched normal control subjects (N=20) on 18 paper-and-pencil neuropsychological measures. These tests were chosen to measure two specific functions. The first set of tests was chosen to measure spatial orientation, and these tests were divided into those that measure personal orientation, extrapersonal orientation, mental rotation, and right/left orientation. The second set of tests was chosen to measure the ability to shift mental set. Hotelling's multivariate T2 tests revealed a significant difference between the PD patients and the normal control subjects on the tests chosen to measure set-shifting ability …
Serial, Parallel And Delay Strategies In The Processing Of Structurally Ambiguous Language Constructions, Harvey Slutsky
Serial, Parallel And Delay Strategies In The Processing Of Structurally Ambiguous Language Constructions, Harvey Slutsky
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Through a set of two experiments, the present study attempted to determine which of three language processing strategies, that is, serial, parallel or delay is employed in parsing two kinds of structurally ambiguous visually presented sentences (transitive and verb complement). The study used a relatively new technique, a self paced syntactic decision task whose sensitivity to local parsing complexity was demonstrated in the first experiment through a partial replication of Ford's (1983) work with relative clause sentences. The findings showed Object relatives to be harder to process at the position of the main verb. The same findings from a followup …
Mrs. Trollope's American Novels, Linda Abess Ellis
Mrs. Trollope's American Novels, Linda Abess Ellis
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Frances Milton Trollope (1779-1863) was one of the most popular novelists and travel writers of her generation. Her visit to the United States (1827-32) provided her with material for her first and most famous book, Domestic Manners of the Americans (1832), and for four novels set in America (The Refugee in America, 1832; Jonathan Jefferson Whitlaw, 1836; The Barnabys in America, 1842; and The Old World and the New, 1849).
This study treats all four American novels, examining them against a background of other travellers' accounts and against other fiction of the early nineteenth century in order to show how …
Talent And Technique: George Gershwin's "Rhapsody In Blue" And John Paul Ii's Mayday 1984 Address To New York Gay And Lesbian Socialists' League At Cooper Union's Great Hall (Transcribed Into Verse From Unauthorized French And Italian Versions Of The Official Soviet Translation Of The Polish Original By Norman Macafee) For Tenor Solo, Chorus (Satb), And Eight Players, Arthur Maisel
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The dissertation consists of two parts, an analytical essay and a composition.
The essay starts from the fact that the musical worth of the Rhapsody in Blue has often been questioned, despite its having been a fixture of the repertoire since its premiere. A close (Schenkerian) analysis shows the flaws of the piece in detail. It also reveals considerable structural coherence, however, comprising very sophisticated treatment of motives in the foreground and middleground, and, in the background, the unfolding of a tritone as the boundary of a tonic that is both B-flat major-minor and a whole-tone collection. Since Gershwin was …
Escaping The Alphabet: The Reading Of Silence In The Novels Of Virginia Woolf, Patricia Laurence
Escaping The Alphabet: The Reading Of Silence In The Novels Of Virginia Woolf, Patricia Laurence
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The exploration of the theme and narration of silence in Virginia Woolf's novels in this dissertation brings under scrutiny nothing less than her perceptions of the nature of gender, being, mind, knowledge and language. Woolf, searching for a language of mind amid changing concepts of mind in the twentieth century, creates a new rhetoric of silence. In defining silence as a "presence" and not just an "absence" in life and narration, Woolf displaces the privileged place of the "speaking subject" and speech or dialogue in the novel. In Chapter 1, there is an attempt to define what "silence" is in …
Theoretical Studies Of The Energies And Geometries Of Strained Hydrocarbons, Mitchell Alan Miller
Theoretical Studies Of The Energies And Geometries Of Strained Hydrocarbons, Mitchell Alan Miller
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Theoretical models are used to explore problems of interest to organic chemists in four projects. The first three apply existing methodologies to investigate a series of strained cyclic hydrocarbon molecules; the fourth develops methodology.
Project I. Semiempirical calculations have been performed on a variety of hydrocarbons composed of fused cyclobutane rings using the MNDO, AM1 and MM2 methods. The systems studied include linearly concatenated cyclobutanes (ladderanes), cyclic structures (prismanes) and two 'star-shaped' C24H24 hydrocarbons, helvetane and israelane. The results reported include optimized geometries, heats of formation and vibrational frequencies. The performance of the theoretical models is evaluated …
Amino Acids And N-Acetyl-Aspartyl-Glutamate As Neurotransmitter Candidates In The Monkey Retinogeniculate Pathways, Ricardo A. Molinar-Rode
Amino Acids And N-Acetyl-Aspartyl-Glutamate As Neurotransmitter Candidates In The Monkey Retinogeniculate Pathways, Ricardo A. Molinar-Rode
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The lateral geniculate nucleus (LGNd) receives chemically identified inputs from brain stem structures, the thalamus and visual cortex. The identity of the neurotransmitter(s) in the retinal input, however, is unknown.
To investigate the possibility that some amino acids and certain dipeptides, such as N-acetyl-aspartyl-glutamate (NAAG), fulfill this function, changes in their concentration were measured in the optic tract, parvocellular and magno-cellular segments of the LGNd, superior colliculus and visual cortex of six monkeys (Macaca fascicularis), seven days after right optic tractotomy. The LGNd was studied also in two additional macaques, three months after occipital lobectomy. Tissue was frozen within five …

Part 1 presents an historical overview of Hall's career, beginning with his first professional productions in Texas, continuing through his work Off-Broadway in New York in the 1950s, and covering his quarter-century at Trinity Rep and six seasons at Dallas. This segment of the study traces how Hall developed the principles that inform his …
Children's Video Usage: A Comparative Study Of Nine To Eleven-Year-Olds Living In London And New York, Seth P. Welins
Children's Video Usage: A Comparative Study Of Nine To Eleven-Year-Olds Living In London And New York, Seth P. Welins
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The goal of this cross-cultural study identifies which video and non-video related activities are selected by nine-to-eleven year old children living in New York and London, England. Four hundred children were surveyed and interviewed about their television and VCR viewing habits and their use of computers and computer/video games as well their after-school, non-video activities.
A uses-gratifications approach provides a general framework for the analyses of the data. These data show that there is a complex interplay between children's activity choices and the occupational status of the child's parents, the child's race/ethnicity, gender, ecological environment, family structure and social structure. …
