Don't Sell Them Short, There's More To Bacterial Natural Products Than Antibiotics, Alison Clare Domzalski
Don't Sell Them Short, There's More To Bacterial Natural Products Than Antibiotics, Alison Clare Domzalski
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Recent genomic studies of microbiomes have revealed an overwhelming number of biosynthetic genes of unknown function. Most of these “cryptic” biosynthetic genes are not expressed in laboratory monocultures of individual microbes. Thus, there remains tremendous untapped potential for natural products discovery. Here we employ mixed microbial culture (MMC) as a simple yet powerful approach to awaken cryptic biosynthetic gene clusters. Our preliminary studies demonstrated that arrays of metabolites could be induced in MMCs upon environmental cues, such as surface adhesion. Using this system, we have screened, identified, and isolated bioactive bacterial metabolites, which were characterized structurally and biologically. Of the …
A Text Analysis Of British Welfare Debates, Emily C. Maanum
A Text Analysis Of British Welfare Debates, Emily C. Maanum

This white paper details the process of conducting a textual analysis of three British parliamentary debates. It also discusses the development of Tableau visualizations to display the results of the analysis, along with the creation of a GitHub repository for documentation of the procedure and code, as well as a GitHub Page for displaying the visualizations. Through text analysis, this capstone project examines the rhetoric used by British members of parliament (MP) while debating the creation of a welfare state during three specific parliamentary debates in 1944: National Health Service, Social Insurance Part 1 and 2, and Employment …
Mechanism Design And Modeling To Analyze Complex Social Systems For Public Policy, Haripriya Chakraborty
Mechanism Design And Modeling To Analyze Complex Social Systems For Public Policy, Haripriya Chakraborty
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The study of complex systems is an important area of research. Many scenarios require the ability to simulate large multi-agent systems with minimal artificial assumptions. We are currently living in a world where the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in various areas is increasing rapidly. This, in turn, has serious consequences from a computational and policy perspective. The focus needs to be on designing systems that are not only computationally elegant and efficient but also ethical. The goal of this thesis is to examine some of the ways AI can be used to simulate complex social systems. In addition, we …
Prophecy, Emanation, And The Mediterranean Middle Ages, Alberto Gelmi
Prophecy, Emanation, And The Mediterranean Middle Ages, Alberto Gelmi
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation explores the notion of prophecy as a semiotic construct in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam on a chronological span that runs from Late Antiquity to the 14th century. It argues that theories of prophecy offer useful insights in the domain of rhetoric and not just in epistemology, as scholarship has predominantly contended. The first two chapters survey the trendsetting work of Augustine, al-Kindi, al-Farabi, Ibn Sina, and Maimonides, arguing that their semiotic angle on prophecy depends on a structural affinity with the metaphysical template of emanationism as formulated by Plotinus and Proclus, whose teachings went often misrepresented or …
Pierce And Pine: Diane Di Prima, Mary Norbert Korte, And The Meeting Of Matter And Spirit, Iris Cushing
Pierce And Pine: Diane Di Prima, Mary Norbert Korte, And The Meeting Of Matter And Spirit, Iris Cushing
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Diane di Prima (1934-2020) and Mary Norbert Korte (b. 1934) are two poets whose contributions to postwar American poetry are vitally important, and yet their status on the margins of mainstream literary culture has left their work largely unstudied. Di Prima, the granddaughter of Italian Anarchist Domenico Mallozzi (with whom she shared a close relationship) grew up in an Italian-American community in Brooklyn and bore witness to the cultural schizophrenia of WWII as a child. Korte was raised in an affluent Bay Area family, and encountered hardships (including the death of her father when she was 12) that affected her …
Constructing The Adaptation Economy In Antigua, West Indies: A Grounded Analysis Of Framing Climate Resilient Development Within A Post-Colonial Political Economy, Erin Friedman
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Caribbean small island developing states (SIDS) are projected to bear the most economic costs from climate risk due to their limited ability to recover from disaster. From 2010-2015, external donors have provided $1477 million in climate financing for the region, of which 32 % has been allocated for climate adaptation activities. At the same time, Caribbean SIDS have an extensive history of participating in regional climate policymaking programs—primarily administered by the development sector (e.g., the World Bank, the Overseas development Institute). These policymaking trainings have promoted an integrated or mainstreamed approach to climate adaptation which seeks to align national development …
Essays On Investor Sentiment, Media, And Trading, Changyun Zhou
Essays On Investor Sentiment, Media, And Trading, Changyun Zhou
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation consists of three chapters that span investor sentiment, media and trading.
Chapter 1: I introduce a direct cross-border sentiment measure of foreign investors and find such foreign sentiment generates significant economic effects on market-level prices. It predicts significant return reversals in the destination markets both in-sample and out-of-sample. This foreign sentiment is unique and distinct from local sentiments in either origin or destination markets. Instrumental-variable and event-based analyses support a large causal effect of cross-border sentiment with, e.g., a multiplier of 4-5. Capital flows contain an important foreign sentiment component, and a residual component positively predicting returns. …

Dota 2 Hero Selection Analysis, Zhan Gong
Dota 2 Hero Selection Analysis, Zhan Gong
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This research explores how to choose heroes for the popular online eSport game Dota 2. Hero selection, also known as drafting, is so crucial to the game that carefully designed hero choices can “implicitly give a team a large advantage before the match even begins” (Conley and Perry 2013).
Different combinations of heroes in a team will have different interactions, ultimately yielding a variety of match outcomes. By combining data visualization and neural network machine learning, this project seeks to help players choose heroes to maximize a team’s likelihood of victory. I will start by introducing some game-play terms. I …

The Production Of Russian Vowels /I/ And /Ɨ/ By Russian-English Bilingual Children, Evgeniya Maryutina
The Production Of Russian Vowels /I/ And /Ɨ/ By Russian-English Bilingual Children, Evgeniya Maryutina
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This study is the first to investigate the production of the Russian vowel contrast /i/-/ɨ/ by Russian-English bilingual children living in New York City. This contrast is interesting because the vowel /ɨ/ is not unanimously recognized as an independent phoneme, based on e.g. its limited occurrence and distribution (Kodzasov & Krivnova, 2010; Matusevich, 1976). Additionally, Russian-speaking children acquire /ɨ/ relatively late in production. Therefore, this contrast’s acquisition may be particularly challenging for bilingual children with more limited exposure and variability in their input and is an interesting test case and contribution to the debate regarding the contrast’s phonological status. In …
Using Fnirs To Identify Brain Regions Involved In Emotional Face Processing In Infants At High Risk For Autism Spectrum Disorder, Christian Martinez
Using Fnirs To Identify Brain Regions Involved In Emotional Face Processing In Infants At High Risk For Autism Spectrum Disorder, Christian Martinez
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Faces provide an abundance of salient information, and within a few hours of being born, infants already show preferential attention to faces and face-like stimuli. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder consisting of social communication and interaction difficulties, and individuals with ASD show differences in the behavioral and neural processing of faces. Prospective studies with infants at high risk for ASD (HRA; by virtue of an older sibling with ASD) have begun to look at whether responses to faces could be an early marker of later ASD. Using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), the current study measured oxygenated hemoglobin …

Data Analysis And Visualization To Dismantle Gender Discrimination In The Field Of Technology, Quinn Bolewicki
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In the United States, a significant population is facing an uphill battle trying to thrive in an industry that has seen exponential growth in recent years. Women, who account for approximately 50.8% of the U.S. population are statistically underpaid and underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Despite women-led technology teams establishing a 21% greater return on investment than teams who don’t, and young women largely outperforming men in math according to a 2015 study, there are only three fortune 500 companies led by women, and they comprise only 10% of internet entrepreneurs. Research generates hundreds of articles, infographics, …
Coalition And Creativity On The Bridges And Fringes With Immigrant Student-Contributors In Nonprofit Adult Education, Katherine E. Entigar
Coalition And Creativity On The Bridges And Fringes With Immigrant Student-Contributors In Nonprofit Adult Education, Katherine E. Entigar
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The nonprofit education of adult immigrants is an under-researched aspect of U.S. education. Adult immigrants, often perceived as passive and quiescent, bring voices and contributions to learning in powerful yet unheard ways. This research agenda invokes a new critical lens in education scholarship to uplift and center these contributions as a coalitional, dialogical project. Drawing upon critical sociocultural, women of color feminist, and poststructual theories, critical intersectional epistemology, and Bakhtinian dialogical thinking, this research project pursues inductive, recursive meaning making as an innovative exploration. A multiphase, sequential study including surveys and two focus groups foregrounds the complex, fluid ways adult …
Improving The Accuracy Of Juror Self-Reports Of Bias During Rehabilitative Voir Dire, Natalie Gordon
Improving The Accuracy Of Juror Self-Reports Of Bias During Rehabilitative Voir Dire, Natalie Gordon
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The courts have long acknowledged pretrial publicity (PTP) as a source of juror bias. To safeguard defendants due process rights, jurors who harbor bias are frequently asked during voir dire if they can set aside their bias and be fair and impartial. Yet, jurors’ self-reports of their ability to be fair and impartial are largely inaccurate. For example, regardless of their level of exposure to PTP, jurors typically report an ability to be fair and impartial. Therefore, this method of so-called “juror rehabilitation” is ineffective. This project examines conformity pressures that may be inhibiting accurate self-reporting during juror rehabilitation and …
Skin Worlds: Black And Indigenous Science Fiction Theorizing Since The 1970s, Lou Cornum
Skin Worlds: Black And Indigenous Science Fiction Theorizing Since The 1970s, Lou Cornum
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation unfolds along two trajectories, the first following from an ascendant interest in minoritarian traditions in speculative and science fiction and the second following the reiterative conversations across Black and Indigenous Studies. Science fiction theorizing is introduced as a frame for thinking these two trajectories together, with science fiction texts by authors Nalo Hopkinson, Octavia Butler, Gerald Vizenor, Leslie Marmon Silko and Samuel Delany providing a paraliterary mode of imagining the planetary from which to understand the interconnected processes of settler colonialism and trans-Atlantic slavery. Science Fiction theorizing across these texts disrupts notions of linear progressive time, human/alien boundaries, …
Mentorship And Support Matters: A Praxis Of Resilience For Black And Latinx Males In An Academic Context, Lisa R. Millsaps-Graham
Mentorship And Support Matters: A Praxis Of Resilience For Black And Latinx Males In An Academic Context, Lisa R. Millsaps-Graham
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Traditionally, Black and Latinx males have lagged their racial counterparts in academic attainment and even persistence. While a myriad of factors affects these outcomes, research points to the importance of student level variables (e.g., demographics and attitudes about college), family level variables (e.g., family support), and school level variables (e.g., school counselors). Much of that research, however, is regional (e.g., only focuses on students in urban or southern locales), cross sectional, lacks strong theoretical grounding, or relies on rudimentary statistical analyses. To address that gap, this dissertation employs the High School Longitudinal Study (HSLS) data set, intersectionality, and critical race …
Examining The Transient Neural Dynamics Underlying Working Memory Maintenance For Complex Visual Stimuli, Chelsea Reichert Plaska
Examining The Transient Neural Dynamics Underlying Working Memory Maintenance For Complex Visual Stimuli, Chelsea Reichert Plaska
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Working memory (WM) is the temporary storage of information to accomplish a future goal. The WM delay period is the time after encoding but before retrieval when information is being maintained, typically in the absence of relevant stimuli. Understanding how the brain supports maintenance during the delay period, and how neural activity and connectivity are related to memory is critical for advancing both basic knowledge as well as informing declines in memory and cognition related to neurodegenerative diseases and healthy aging. An open question in the field of WM research is how information is stored during this delay period. One …
The Role Of Authoritarianism In The 2020 Election, Brandon Vigil
The Role Of Authoritarianism In The 2020 Election, Brandon Vigil
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The rise of authoritarianism in the United States has frequently been touted as an impossibility in the face of long-standing democratic institutions and processes. Yet recent trends in American political behavior suggest that this is not the case, that authoritarian behaviors can in fact be facilitated through these means. This study is concerned with measuring the prevalence of authoritarian attitudes among Americans, asking the key question, “Did authoritarianism play a role in the 2020 election?”, followed by an investigation into the extent of this effect. Logistic regression using 2020 ANES data is employed to predict 2020 presidential vote choice among …
Dating Apps, Or, Ghosts In The Viral Affect Machine, Gregory Narr
Dating Apps, Or, Ghosts In The Viral Affect Machine, Gregory Narr
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation is an investigation into the effects of the popularization of dating apps on their users. I use OkCupid, Tinder, and Bumble as paradigmatic examples to flesh out these effects. The data I used for this investigation are fifty interviews and a content analysis of Bumble, Tinder, and OkCupid subreddit forums. I focused on the effects of swiping, texting, and the black boxing of the algorithm in chapters 2, 3, and 4 respectively. In all three chapters, I make the case that the shift to apps conforms with the exigencies of an economy that increasingly makes use of affect …
From Poor Campesinos To Tortilla Kings: Mexican Migrant Elites, Yesenia Ruiz
From Poor Campesinos To Tortilla Kings: Mexican Migrant Elites, Yesenia Ruiz
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation analyzes a recent transnational Mexican migrant elite—a new social and economic group that emerged not from established elites or from privileged backgrounds, but from poor campesino families. Members of this group migrated to the U.S. from Mexico during the 1980s. The majority of these (male) entrepreneur migrants crossed the border as mojados without passports or money. Over a period of thirty years, these migrants have accumulated an unprecedented amount of wealth and, thereby, gain prestige and status within their communities. Successful in both the US and Mexico, these entrepreneurs are distinct from other transnational migrant groups. They have …

The Power Of A Sound Mind: Exploring Meditation And Sound Therapies For Treating The Emotional Impact Of Tinnitus, Sabeena A. Ramnanan
The Power Of A Sound Mind: Exploring Meditation And Sound Therapies For Treating The Emotional Impact Of Tinnitus, Sabeena A. Ramnanan
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Tinnitus is described as a sound perceived by an individual that has no external source. Some individuals with tinnitus can habituate to this phantom sound, while others become emotionally disturbed by it. There are several theories which attempt to rationalize the cause of tinnitus, and various treatments which aim to eliminate, mask, or facilitate habituation to one’s tinnitus. Current common treatments include sound therapies and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), either in isolation or in combination with one another. However, not all these treatments aim to address the emotional impact of tinnitus. Novel treatments are emerging, with some attempting to reduce the …
Young People’S Perception Of Opportunities To Participate In Democratic Governance, Jennifer Nga Yu Tang
Young People’S Perception Of Opportunities To Participate In Democratic Governance, Jennifer Nga Yu Tang
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (United Nations General Assembly, 1989) accords all young people the right to be heard and make decisions on matters affecting them. Despite the fact the United States remains the only country in the world not to have ratified this document, a number of American cities have nevertheless begun to engage young people in community decision-making (e.g., in neighborhood associations or community boards). However, as of yet there are few actual opportunities for youth to participate fully in the governance of their cities. This study examined the perspectives of young people …
The Second Kashmir (Informational) War Of 1965, Navdip Hans
The Second Kashmir (Informational) War Of 1965, Navdip Hans
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The Second Kashmir (Informational) War of 1965 considers that Pakistan over-optimistically assessed information prior to the onset of hostilities with India. This thesis posits that information released from significant battlefield events quickly dispelled Pakistan's optimism which led to an accurate updating of beliefs and expectations. This resulted in a downward revision of demands by Pakistan to convergence with India resulting in settlement ending the war.

Monumentality, Fortification, And Movement: Preclassic Maya Developments As Seen At Muralla De León, Petén, Guatemala, Justin D. Bracken
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Analysis of settlement patterning in relation to natural and constructed defensive elements expands understanding of the impact of warfare well beyond the relatively brief period of active battle. Advance preparation in advance of conflict, including reshaping the landscape for defensibility and conscription of labor toward that end, alters patterns of movement, social interaction, and physical settlement, effects that can extend for generations beyond the cessation of hostilities. This project investigates the role played by warfare in shaping the physical and social landscape of the Maya of the central Petén during the Late Preclassic period (400 B.C. – A.D. 150), as …

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The dopamine D3 receptor (D3R) is one of the most studied receptors involved in drug addiction. One of the most common strategies to treat substance use disorders is via D3R antagonism. The majority of the D3R antagonists synthesized so far have poor pharmacokinetic properties and/or lack selectivity toward D3R. In this thesis, the design, synthesis and biological evaluation of novel molecules that target the dopamine D1 receptor (D1R), D3R and the serendipitous discovery of molecules that target s receptors will be described.
Chapter 1 presents a survey of the fundamental pharmacology of D1R, D3R and s receptors and the therapeutic …
