Behavioral Symptoms, Inflammation And Cortisol: Relationship To Cardiac Health And Quality Of Life In Cardiac Rehabilitation Patients, Deborah Anne Sindewald Jan 2020

Behavioral Symptoms, Inflammation And Cortisol: Relationship To Cardiac Health And Quality Of Life In Cardiac Rehabilitation Patients, Deborah Anne Sindewald

Dissertations

Background: The experience of a cardiac event is associated with psychological stress, which is often accompanied by depressive mood, fatigue and sleep disturbance (i.e., psycho-behavioral symptoms). To assist in recovery, cardiac patients can participate in a structured rehabilitation program, which provides monitored exercise and health education. There is limited knowledge, however, as to the extent to which cardiac rehabilitation reduces psycho-behavioral symptoms; nor is there knowledge of the association of these symptoms with stress-related biological mediators. Cortisol and inflammatory mediators (e.g., interleukin 6; IL-6) contribute to cardiovascular disease, and are also associated with greater stress perception, depressive mood, fatigue, and …

Effect Of Sulfur And A Perfluoropolyether On The Ignition And Decomposition Of Solid Fuels For Ramjets, Daniel A. Jones Jan 2020

Effect Of Sulfur And A Perfluoropolyether On The Ignition And Decomposition Of Solid Fuels For Ramjets, Daniel A. Jones

Dissertations

Widening the flammability limits of solid fuels used in ramjet engines broadens the operational range of altitudes and speeds and enhances the possibility of autoigni- tion from incoming air alone. This experimental research studies how to decrease the solid fuel lower flammability limit while maintaining or improving other key thermal and mechanical properties. Candidate fuels are formulated using epoxy cured liquid polysulfide doped with sulfur and a perfluoropolyether. Sulfur doped formulations are hypothesized to produce greater mass fractions of low ignition temperature species to widen flammability limits, but degrade low-temperature mechanical properties. Perfluoropolyether is added to the mixtures to preserve …

Plasma Energization And Dissipation In The Heliosphere, Senbei Du Jan 2020

Plasma Energization And Dissipation In The Heliosphere, Senbei Du

Dissertations

The energization and dissipation of plasma are ubiquitous processes in the heliosphere. They are the key to some of the most outstanding questions in heliophysics such as coronal heating and the acceleration of solar energetic particles. In this dissertation, we investigate plasma energization and dissipation based on the collisionless kinetic equation. Plasma energization is discussed using the evolution equations of bulk flow and thermal energy densities. In a two-fluid description, it has been suggested that the pressure-strain interaction converts bulk kinetic energy into thermal energy. In a single-fluid description, we find that the bulk acceleration and heating are due to …

Missile Interceptor Integrated Guidance And Control : Single-Loop Higher-Order Sliding Mode Approach, Michael Cross Jan 2020

Missile Interceptor Integrated Guidance And Control : Single-Loop Higher-Order Sliding Mode Approach, Michael Cross

Dissertations

Traditionally, a missile interceptor's three-loop autopilot relies on every sensor to be working at all times for an intercept to occur. With faulty sensors and countermeasures becoming more sophisticated, sensor improvements alone may not be enough. In this research, an alternative structure is presented that does not rely on multiple sensors. Instead, it consists of a single-loop using only the relative normal velocity as feedback in an integrated guidance and control (IGC) structure. This establishes a direct link between the feedback and the missile's control surfaces. At its core, the IGC uses higher-order sliding mode control techniques to execute the …

Reforming Sensory Disability In Early Modern England, Mary Lutze Jan 2020

Reforming Sensory Disability In Early Modern England, Mary Lutze

Dissertations

Reforming Sensory Disability in Early Modern England traces early modern literary depictions of blindness and deafness during the Reformation. the project proposes an inherently dynamic early modern religious model of disabilities: first characterized by its initial rejection of England's prior faith tradition, then by doctrinal negotiation among reformed dissenters. It analyzes the shift in disability representation in popular literature of the sixteenth and seventeenth century before culminating in an examination of seventeenth-century deaf education. Finally, the project proposes that the seventeenth-century advent of deaf education should be read as a concrete ideological shift in English society's perception of the disabled.

Confusion Modelling - An Estimation By Semantic Embeddings, Praveen Mohanprasad Jan 2020

Confusion Modelling - An Estimation By Semantic Embeddings, Praveen Mohanprasad

Dissertations

Approaching the task of coherence assessment of a conversation from its negative perspective ‘confusion’ rather than coherence itself, has been attempted by very few research works. Influencing Embeddings to learn from similarity/dissimilarity measures such as distance, cosine similarity between two utterances will equip them with the semantics to differentiate a coherent and an incoherent conversation through the detection of negative entity, ‘confusion’. This research attempts to measure coherence of conversation between a human and a conversational agent by means of such semantic embeddings trained from scratch by an architecture centralising the learning from the distance between the embeddings. State of …
