Adopting A Systematic Approach To Tasting Cider Within The Irish Craft Cider Industry, Richie Brady Jan 2021

Adopting A Systematic Approach To Tasting Cider Within The Irish Craft Cider Industry, Richie Brady

Dissertations

Craft cider-makers produce less than 1% of Irish cider which is a significantly smaller percentage than craft producers in other beverage markets. This study contextualises Irish cider’s importance by exploring its rich history in Gaelic and Georgian Ireland. It then examines how that importance is not reflected in today’s market and posits that introducing a new systematic approach to tasting will enable cider to be viewed beyond what many see as a cheap, simple summer drink. A systematic approach to tasting is a structured and repeatable method of describing taste using a lexicon of agreed words. Unlike other drinks, such …

William Of Auxerre And Thomas Aquinas On Simultaneous Faith And Knowledge, Jacob Joseph Andrews Jan 2021

William Of Auxerre And Thomas Aquinas On Simultaneous Faith And Knowledge, Jacob Joseph Andrews

Dissertations

In this dissertation I will consider how two 13th century theologians, William of Auxerre (1156-1231) and St. Thomas Aquinas (1224-1274), explored the question, "Whether the same thing can be known (demonstratively) and (believed by faith)" (utrum idem sit scitum et creditum). Both denied that this was possible, but they differed in the relative epistemic priority of faith and knowledge. Aquinas thought that demonstrative knowledge has epistemic priority over faith: for example, if someone knows a proof for God's existence, then they know that God exists, and it is impossible for them to have faith that God exists. Aquinas is a …

Investigating The Effects Of Tgf-Β On T Cell Activation-Induced Cell Death, Christina Rose Cunha Jan 2021

Investigating The Effects Of Tgf-Β On T Cell Activation-Induced Cell Death, Christina Rose Cunha

Dissertations

Achieving immune homeostasis requires the functions and numbers of suppressive regulatory T cells (Tregs) and effector conventional T cells (conv T) to be balanced and precisely controlled. A decrease in Treg numbers is associated with autoimmune diseases such as type I diabetes and multiple sclerosis, while Treg numbers are increased in the tumor microenvironment. Conversely, an increase in conv inflammatory T cells in the tumor microenvironment is associated with better outcomes for cancer patients. Thus, maintaining the appropriate balance between Treg and conventional T cell populations is essential for controlling immune responses against non-self and self-antigens, as well as tumor …

At low redshifts, observations account for only a fraction of the total predicted baryons in the universe. This is the ”Missing Baryon” Problem addressed in this project. Based on theory and simulations, it is believed that the missing baryons are located between galaxies as a diffused plasma with temperature range log T (K) = 5 − 7. This diffused plasma is called the Warm Hot Intergalactic Medium (WHIM). It is believed that the WHIM and the Luminosity Density (LD) of Galaxies are correlated within filamentary regions, which are thought to contain the majority of the WHIM. Thus the galaxy luminosity …

The Effects Of Altitude On The Aerodynamic Performance Of Monarch Butterflies, Madhu Kandikere Sridhar Jan 2021

The Effects Of Altitude On The Aerodynamic Performance Of Monarch Butterflies, Madhu Kandikere Sridhar

Dissertations

The aerodynamic efficiency behind the annual migration of Monarch butterflies, the longest migration among insects, is an unsolved mystery. Monarchs migrate 4000 km at high altitudes to their overwintering locations in the mountains of Central Mexico at an altitude of 3000 m. The air is thinner at higher altitudes, yielding reduced aerodynamic drag and enhanced range. However, lift is also expected to decrease in lower density conditions. The objective of this research is to test the hypothesis that aerodynamic performance of Monarch wing improves at reduced density conditions at higher altitudes. First, we experimentally measured and documented the wing and …
