The Necessity And Possibility Of Decolonizing The Understanding Of Chinese-Ness, Tao Zhang
The Necessity And Possibility Of Decolonizing The Understanding Of Chinese-Ness, Tao Zhang
Dissertations
In this dissertation, I explore how crossing national borders has made me aware of the many identity borders that I have crossed as a transnational Chinese, and how I am caught up in identity politics between the “Chinese,” who do not necessarily always identify as “Chinese” in the transnational context. However, as a racialized group in the U.S., transnational Chinese are perceived as a homogeneous population, usually through racially (“Yellow Peril” or “Chinese Virus”) and politically (“Red Scare”) charged lenses measured by Western/U.S. binaristic and hierarchical standards. Therefore, in this research project, I problematize dominant U.S. race logic, i.e., the …

A Grounded Theory Analysis Of Black African International Students’ Racial Identity Development, Maame Coleman
Dissertations
This study was designed to explore how Black African international students develop an understanding of their racial identity within the U.S. context. Although there has been considerable previous theoretical and empirical work examining the process of racial identity development (e.g. Cross, 1971; Sellers et al.1998), which has provided foundation for how we continue to understand how U.S. racial minorities develop their racial identities. However, there is a paucity of research on the racial identity development process of non-U.S. born Black people (Hocoy, 1999; Asante, 2012). Even less is known about the role that intersectionality of other identities plays in the …

To date, CQD photodetector research is primarily focused on lead-chalcogenide semiconductor CQDs which have spectral response fundamentally limited by the bulk bandgap of the constituent material, confining their applications to near-infrared (NIR, 0.7-1.0 um) and short-wavelength infrared (SWIR, 1-2.5 um) spectral regions. The overall goal of this dissertation is to investigate a new generation of CQD materials and devices that advances the current CQD photodetector research toward the technologically important thermal infrared region of 3-5 ?m, known as …
On Non-Linear Network Embedding Methods, Huong Yen Le
On Non-Linear Network Embedding Methods, Huong Yen Le
Dissertations
As a linear method, spectral clustering is the only network embedding algorithm that offers both a provably fast computation and an advanced theoretical understanding. The accuracy of spectral clustering depends on the Cheeger ratio defined as the ratio between the graph conductance and the 2nd smallest eigenvalue of its normalizedLaplacian. In several graph families whose Cheeger ratio reaches its upper bound of Theta(n), the approximation power of spectral clustering is proven to perform poorly. Moreover, recent non-linear network embedding methods have surpassed spectral clustering by state-of-the-art performance with little to no theoretical understanding to back them.
The dissertation includes work …

Gradient Free Sign Activation Zero One Loss Neural Networks For Adversarially Robust Classification, Yunzhe Xue
Gradient Free Sign Activation Zero One Loss Neural Networks For Adversarially Robust Classification, Yunzhe Xue
Dissertations
The zero-one loss function is less sensitive to outliers than convex surrogate losses such as hinge and cross-entropy. However, as a non-convex function, it has a large number of local minima, andits undifferentiable attribute makes it impossible to use backpropagation, a method widely used in training current state-of-the-art neural networks. When zero-one loss is applied to deep neural networks, the entire training process becomes challenging. On the other hand, a massive non-unique solution probably also brings different decision boundaries when optimizing zero-one loss, making it possible to fight against transferable adversarial examples, which is a common weakness in deep learning …

The Interplay Of The Physical Landscape And Social Dynamics In Shaping Movement Of African Savanna Elephants (Loxodonta Africana), Maggie Wisniewska
The Interplay Of The Physical Landscape And Social Dynamics In Shaping Movement Of African Savanna Elephants (Loxodonta Africana), Maggie Wisniewska
Dissertations
Free ranging African savanna elephants (Loxodonta africana) are increasingly impacted by human-induced habitat loss and poaching for ivory. Because elephants live in tightly knit groups, this combination of threats not only reduces the size of their populations but also degrades their social interactions. Long-term relationships with socially competent individuals, such as experienced seniors, benefit the ability of other group members to access limiting resources and avoid danger. Understanding how anthropogenic pressure may affect persistence of elephant populations is important, because elephants are an economically important keystone species. This doctoral thesis characterizes how individual elephants influence the movement of their social …
