Help For Osteoarthritis Pain In African American Elders (Hope): Patterns, Predictors, And Preferences Of Osteoarthritis And Chronic Joint Pain Self-Management, Staja Quinae Booker
Help For Osteoarthritis Pain In African American Elders (Hope): Patterns, Predictors, And Preferences Of Osteoarthritis And Chronic Joint Pain Self-Management, Staja Quinae Booker
Dissertations
Chronic joint (CJ) pain is the foremost osteoarthritis (OA) symptom that affects older African Americans' (AAs) functional ability. Every effort should be made to reduce the development of high-impact chronic pain. One way to effectively do this is for older AAs to consistently engage in self-management utilizing the recommended OA treatments. Recommended behaviors include land-based exercise, water-based exercise, strength (muscle and endurance) training and stretching, self-management education, analgesic medications, thermal (warm/cool) modalities, and use of assistive and/or orthotic devices. However, evidence suggests these core behaviors of chronic pain self-management are not optimally utilized in older AAs.

The Relationship Between Nurse Staffing, Nursing Time, And Adverse Events In An Acute Care Hospital, Robyn B. Cheung
Dissertations
Studies have shown that nurse-staffing patterns affect patient safety, but it is not known how staffing patterns affect time spent in direct and indirect care. This study explores the relationships between nurse staffing, registered nurse (RN) time spent in direct and indirect care, and the occurrence of adverse events on 5 inpatient units in an acute care hospital. Time spent in direct and indirect care was determined by examining patterns of electronically recorded data that captured, via locator badges, continuous intervals of time. Electronic data were captured using the Hill-Rom COMposer® nurse locator system.

A Mixed-Methods Case Study On Debt Mitigation And Students’ Institutional Perceptions, Dawn S. Medley
Dissertations
The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to examine the role of a debt mitigation program as an incentive for adult student reengagement and to ascertain students’ perceptions of the institution after reenrolling in college via the program. The debt mitigation program was the first in the nation to forgive past-due student institutional debt, allowing students to return to the classroom (Pavlik, 2021). More overt student connection supports were designed to engage adult returners in addition to the debt forgiveness component (Itzkowitz, 2018). By dismissing student debt, designing outreach, and creating specific supports, the program was designed to demonstrate institutional …

Bridging The Gap: Using Simultaneous Multi-Patient Simulations To Improve Nursing Competency And Transition To Practice: A Causal-Comparative Inquiry, Julie Fomenko
Dissertations
Twenty-first-century healthcare is a complex and demanding arena. Today's hospital environment is more complex than in previous years while patients move through the system at a much faster pace. Newly graduated nurses are challenged in their first year with the healthcare needs of complex patients. Nurse educators and nurse leaders differ in opinions regarding the readiness of newly licensed nurses. Despite these opposing views, there is no argument that today's hospitalized patients need expert nurses to care for them. This study explores the development of competence in newly graduated nurses using simultaneous multi-patient simulations (SMPS).
