Moral Decision Making By Neonatal Intensive Care Nurses, Pamela Sue Chally

Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to gain information about the perspective neonatal intensive care nurses use to make moral decisions. Previous research in nursing has assumed acceptance of Kohlberg's theoretical conception of moral development. This research incorporated more recent development theory to include not only a Kohlbergian justice perspective, but also, the care perspective described by Gilligan.

Research questions included:

(1) To what extent is a care perspective used by registered nurses as they make moral decisions?

(2) To what extent is a justice perspective used by registered nurses as they make moral decisions?

An Investigation On The Impact Of Intestinal Oxygen Availability On Survival And Regulation Of Virulence In Listeria Monocytogenes, Damayanti Chakravarty

Dissertations

The deadly foodborne pathogen Listeria monocytogenes is a gram positive facultative anaerobic bacterium. It is the third leading cause of death from food-borne illnesses. Once ingested, it encounters various stressors in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, including acidic pH, bile, and alterations in oxygen availability. Various studies have been done regarding the pathogen’s survival mechanism against acid and bile. Since the lower parts of the GI tract are anaerobic, it is imperative to investigate how physiologically relevant anaerobic conditions impact L. monocytogenes’s survival. Transcriptomic analysis of L. monocytogenes under conditions mimicking the GI tract was performed. A large number of genes …

The Impact Of Hospital Nursing Resources On Postsurgical Outcomes For Patients With Opioid Use Disorder, Rachel E. French May 2022

The Impact Of Hospital Nursing Resources On Postsurgical Outcomes For Patients With Opioid Use Disorder, Rachel E. French

Dissertations

Opioid use disorder (OUD) is common, with the rate of opioid-related hospitalizations doubling from 2006 to 2016. Surgical patients with OUD are at significantly higher risk of prolonged length of stay, in-hospital mortality, and readmission. Postoperative care for patients with OUD is particularly challenging for nurses whose responsibilities include pain and withdrawal management, care team coordination, patient assessment, and patient teaching. A large body of evidence suggests better outcomes for surgical patients when they are cared for in hospitals with strong nursing resources. This study sought to determine whether variations in nursing resources (i.e., education, staffing, and work environment) were …

School Administrator Preparation In Special Education: A Cross-Case Analysis, Emily Ruiz May 2022

School Administrator Preparation In Special Education: A Cross-Case Analysis, Emily Ruiz

Dissertations

Special education has been part of public education for 46 years and has evolved considerably in that time. Despite improvements made in special education law, there remains a disconnect between law and current practices. Several studies suggest this disconnect is associated with administrators’ insufficient preparation for supporting special education in their schools.

This study utilized an explanatory sequential design to study Southern California school principals’ special education preparation. During the first phase of the study, the researcher emailed surveys to administrators who were selected using a stratified random sampling strategy. Unfortunately, the response rate was too low to employ the …

These refugee children have lived on the road or in refugee camps, faced consistent interruptions to a …

Executive Peer Advisory Groups: Who They Are? What Are Their Benefits? Why Do Members Join And Stay?, Andrew Feghali May 2022

Executive Peer Advisory Groups: Who They Are? What Are Their Benefits? Why Do Members Join And Stay?, Andrew Feghali

Dissertations

Executive peer advisory groups (EPAGs) are exclusive organizations in which chief executive officers (CEOs) and presidents of businesses can problem solve business challenges, discuss business strategies, share best practices, and solve critical growth and performance issues. Executive peer advisory groups are based on the premise that the collective experience and resources of peer groups empower like-minded executives to solve challenges more effectively and more rapidly than they could do on their own. A key component of EPAGs is the forum, in which six to 16 members meet, typically monthly, in small-group sessions to function as each other’s personal advisory boards. …

Examining The Cross-Cultural Competence Of United States Christian Missionaries Engaged In Developing Indigenous Leaders: A Mixed Methods Study, Craig W. Goodman May 2022

Examining The Cross-Cultural Competence Of United States Christian Missionaries Engaged In Developing Indigenous Leaders: A Mixed Methods Study, Craig W. Goodman

Dissertations

For the past two millennia, missionaries have crossed from one culture to another to bring the Christian message to all cultures of the world. Questions about the effectiveness of these mission efforts have been asked and researched by many; however, one key question remains unanswered: what personal attributes help a person to be more competent at crossing cultures as they interact with people from other cultures? Although cross-cultural competence has been studied in a variety of fields over the past 50 years, the models and assessments used have never been applied to Christian missionaries.

To address this deficiency, this parallel …

Understanding Food Waste Behavior And Ways To Influence Positive Change And Waste Reduction, David Hubinger May 2022

Understanding Food Waste Behavior And Ways To Influence Positive Change And Waste Reduction, David Hubinger

Dissertations

Environmental problems such as pollution, climate change, and food waste can be influenced by social attitudes and human behavior. Solutions to address environmental problems involve a series of actions by society and individuals, which can prove difficult to implement because changes induced by pro-environmental behavior often cannot be seen immediately by individuals or may not generate appreciable, direct benefits. The purposes of the quantitative correlational study are threefold: first, examine environmental attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, and overall behavioral intent to reduce household consumer food waste among a sample of consumers; second, to examine the extent to which select …

Black Beyond Measure: An Antideficit Exploration Of Cultural Capital Within A National Society Of Black Engineers (Nsbe) Chapter At A Predominantly White Institution (Pwi), Rhonda Harley May 2022

Black Beyond Measure: An Antideficit Exploration Of Cultural Capital Within A National Society Of Black Engineers (Nsbe) Chapter At A Predominantly White Institution (Pwi), Rhonda Harley

Dissertations

Historically, Black students have been excluded from Predominately White institutions (PWI) longer than welcomed to attend and matriculate (Harper et al., 2009). Due to this lack of inclusion, African American students' educational experiences often center on academic disparities, inequality of opportunity, and under-preparedness in career planning within the American education system. While there has been a fair amount of research on the lack of representation of Black students in the engineering disciplines, the heavy focus on quantitative data offers little insight into the unique ways students succeed and overcome institutional and systemic barriers in pursuit of their degree. Undergraduate experiences, …

Improving The Retention Of United States (U.S.) Government Science, Technology, Engineering, And Mathematics (Stem) Employees, Jeffrey Myers May 2022

Improving The Retention Of United States (U.S.) Government Science, Technology, Engineering, And Mathematics (Stem) Employees, Jeffrey Myers

Dissertations

The U.S. government workforce has been consistently shrinking since a peak in the 1990s. At the same time, the need for technologically-savvy government workers has dramatically risen in this same period. This divergence in the demand for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) employees challenges government leaders to retain these highly demanded workers in the public sector.

Decades of psychological research across many industries has investigated what motivates workers and how best to incentivize them to increase productivity. Maslow and Herzberg, among others, theorized that adult workers have both intrinsic and extrinsic needs that drive their behaviors and resultant productivity. …

Helmets Off: An Exploratory Investigation Into The Philanthropic Activity Of Black Nfl Players, Eugena Anderson

Dissertations

The term philanthropist typically conjures up images of older, wealthy White males. When taking account of a more diverse population, the term generosity provides a more inclusive framework to understanding the experiences of those marginalized from the study and practice of philanthropy. Using an interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) approach, this qualitative investigation explored one of several groups of individuals engaging in acts of generosity and brought the Black athlete experience into academic and philanthropic conversations. This research provided knowledge from real-life experiences of current and former Black NFL Players (BNPs) to inform various stakeholders who seek to support their activities. …

Effectiveness Of Fall Prevention Multimedia Program On Patient Awareness, Self-Efficacy, And Engagement, Perlita C. Cerilo

Dissertations

Hospitalized adults are at high risk of falls during their acute episode of care making fall prevention programs a critical element of care. Patient self-efficacy and engagement in fall-prevention activities are important aspects of fall-prevention programs. Education may play an important role in increasing self-efficacy and the likelihood of engagement; however, a gap in evidence explores the effect of patient education on self-efficacy and engagement among hospitalized older adults in preventing falls. This quasi-experimental study examined the effect of a multimedia program on hospitalized adults' levels of fall risk awareness, self-efficacy, and engagement in fall prevention. Sixty hospitalized adults in …

Breaking Boundaries: Investigating The Experiences Of Racially Diverse Low Socioeconomic Status Students Through A Narrative Inquiry Approach, Ryan Jumamil May 2022

Breaking Boundaries: Investigating The Experiences Of Racially Diverse Low Socioeconomic Status Students Through A Narrative Inquiry Approach, Ryan Jumamil

Dissertations

Across the US, there is growing inequality of class distribution in predominately white and elite colleges and universities. Although gaining access to these institutions is typically the first hurdle, it is not the only challenge racially diverse low socioeconomic status (SES) students face. By investigating the college experiences of racially diverse low SES students enrolled in a predominately white elite institution, this study creates the foundation for an imperative discussion on the relationship between students' identity and attendance at predominately white elite institutions.

Through a Narrative Inquiry research approach and using semi-structured interviews as a data collection tool, two themes …

Civilian Disaster Healthcare Response Systems: An Exploratory Study Using The E-Delphi Technique, Jonathan A. Wilson May 2022

Civilian Disaster Healthcare Response Systems: An Exploratory Study Using The E-Delphi Technique, Jonathan A. Wilson

Dissertations

Civilian disaster healthcare response systems are utilized in the United States (U.S.) during large-scale emergencies and disasters that negatively impact the healthcare delivery system of a community. The composition, design, deployment and effectiveness of these systems vary greatly across the nation. These systems are multidimensional and lack a consistent definition or collection of defining characteristics for effective use in modern healthcare. This study identified the operational characteristics of effective civilian disaster healthcare response systems in the U.S. The study incorporated the use of the e-Delphi technique to engage experts in the field of disaster response to determine consensus items that …

Reaching For The Stars: A Constructivist Investigation Of Astrology As A Tool For Self-Discovery In A New Age Of Leadership, Cameron Martin May 2022

Reaching For The Stars: A Constructivist Investigation Of Astrology As A Tool For Self-Discovery In A New Age Of Leadership, Cameron Martin

Dissertations

To fully understand leadership in today’s world, we need a radical reconceptualization of the developmental process required to lead. Changing paradigms demands new perspectives on leadership; these new paradigms suggest leaders must turn inward and develop knowledge of their inner selves to realize their full potential as leaders.

Astrology is an ancient way of knowing and making sense of the world and one’s place in it that provides benefits to many people in our modern world, despite fervent academic, religious, and scientific criticism. Astrology is more than a divination tool. It is an entire epistemology of self in relation to …

Gun Control Laws And Policies Reported Influence On The Attitudes Of Faculty At Mississippi Universities, David Besancon May 2022

Gun Control Laws And Policies Reported Influence On The Attitudes Of Faculty At Mississippi Universities, David Besancon

Dissertations

The concealed carrying of firearms is a polarizing subject. In general, the political left would like to see more restrictive gun laws, whereas the political right would like to see less restrictive guns laws. Research of this also seems politically biased. While one researcher will use data that show violent crime increases with more restrictive gun laws, another researcher will use logic to dictate that less guns means less violence. University campuses are generally considered a liberal environment. However, Mississippi has been one of the two most conservative states since the 1930s. This research examines the attitudes of faculty at …

Understanding Families'/Surrogate Decision Makers' Experience Of Decision Making For Critically Ill Patients In Saudi Arabia, Omaimah A. Qadhi

Dissertations

Critical illness not only affects patients, but also may negatively impact the families and people who are responsible to make decisions for those patients. Making decision can be challenging for people when it is for someone else who is critically ill. This study explores the decision-making experience for family or a surrogate decision maker for critically ill patients in Saudi Arabia. This project also tested the presence or absence of regret after making serious decisions about a medical treatment for another individual. Goal Attainment Theory was used to guide this study. The concepts of the Interpersonal Interacting Systems were used …
