Comparison Between The Effectiveness Of Mysci And Openscied Curricula On The Achievement And Attitudes Of Eighth Grade Science Students, Nicole Vick, Nina Blanton

Dissertations

Educators have struggled with maintaining student engagement in science, especially as students transition from primary to middle school and upper grades (Vedder-Weiss & Fortus, 2012). A recent push in science education has been the adoption of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), released in 2013, whose development was guided by A K-12 Framework for Science Education (NGSS Lead States, 2013). As a result, more educators have been incorporating curricula that require students to ascertain disciplinary core ideas using lenses of cross cutting concepts while engaged in science and engineering practices; the three dimensions of NGSS performance expectations (PE) also …

A Network Analysis Examining Dissociation And Suicide Risk In Military Veterans And Non-Veterans, Nicole Caulfield Jun 2023

A Network Analysis Examining Dissociation And Suicide Risk In Military Veterans And Non-Veterans, Nicole Caulfield

Dissertations

Higher rates of dissociation are related to more severe psychopathology, psychiatric comorbidity, and poorer response to treatment, yet there is limited research examining dissociation as a transdiagnostic factor. In particular, examining dissociation in a Veteran sample is vital, as Veterans have been shown to have higher trauma exposure and dissociation rates than non-Veterans. Dissociation has been linked to several adverse outcomes related to Veterans, particularly suicide, as dissociation may increase the possibility of a suicidal act because of intensified disconnect from the body. However, research examining the relationship between dissociation, suicide, and additional related factors has been limited, given the …

The Impact Of Teach-Back Method On Hospital Readmissions, Rebel L. Heasley Jun 2023

The Impact Of Teach-Back Method On Hospital Readmissions, Rebel L. Heasley

Dissertations

Excessive healthcare costs resulted in the advent of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Hospital Readmission Reduction Program, where hospitals incur financial penalties for high readmission rates. This suburban hospital reported readmission rates of 10.38% in 2020 and 9.03% in 2021, much higher than the desired Vizient national benchmark of 6.83% or the twenty-fifth percentile. A literature review revealed that using the teach-back method alone or with other discharge activities can reduce hospital readmissions. This project tackled the quality
issue of high readmission rates by addressing patient education at discharge. The quality improvement project translated the use of the …

Sit Less, Move More: A National Study Of Physical-Activity Behavior And Cancer, Stella O. Nwogugu

Dissertations

Physical activity is associated with lower risks of cancer, the second leading cause of death among Americans. Yet, sedentary behavior is the prevailing lifestyle for about 80% of American adults. Additionally, cancer survivors remain significantly inactive, even though physical activity has been shown to decrease risk of cancer and cancer recurrence, improve tolerance of cancer therapy, and reduce mortality. This research explores the relative impact of personal agency, social support, and key demographic variables on physical-activity behavior for a national sample of adults as well as how these relationships differ for cancer survivors and their counterparts.

Experiences Of Students In Degree-Seeking Proprietary Nursing Programs In South Florida, Yvanessa Georges

Dissertations

Students of proprietary programs perform significantly lower in the NCLEX than students of other programs. This is more significant in the state of Florida where the NCLEX pass rate is below the national average. Although the discrepancy in the first-time pass rates is well documented in the statistics, the reason for this is unclear, and there is paucity in the literature addressing this phenomenon.

The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experience of nursing students attending degree-seeking proprietary programs in South Florida.

This mixed methods dissertation does so by uncovering the legal landscape that defines the policy levers and bringing educators together in focus groups to delve deeply into these levers’ impact …

Using The Lens Of Flourishing To Understand The Professional Well-Being Of K-12 Teachers Who Have Worked In Urban Schools For Over A Decade, Candis M. Thomas Jun 2023

Using The Lens Of Flourishing To Understand The Professional Well-Being Of K-12 Teachers Who Have Worked In Urban Schools For Over A Decade, Candis M. Thomas

Dissertations

Historically, urban public schools with high concentrations of high-poverty, low-achieving students, report having difficulty attracting, developing, and retaining qualified and effective teachers (Ansley et al, 2019; Petty et.al, 2012; Simon & Johnson, 2015; Wilder, 2012). A common explanation to the attrition crisis in urban schools is that teachers are suffering from stressors (e.g., student characteristics, school climate, concerns for safety, lack of parental support, accountability measures), that leaves them burnt out. Yet, there are experienced and qualified K-12 teachers who are committed to working in these schools. Advances in the field of positive psychology, has spilled over into the educational …

This dissertation utilized mixed methods research to examine how nonreligious individuals with substance use disorders navigate recovery within—or in spite of—Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). Both the 12-step program itself and Alcoholics Anonymous have long been criticized for being religious and/or spiritual in nature, and some studies have shown that this is particularly challenging for nonreligious individuals seeking recovery. The purpose of this research was to (a) identify differences in recovery resources (recovery capital) between the religious, the nonreligious, those in AA, and those who have adopted alternative forms of recovery; (b) identify barriers that the nonreligious face as they navigate recovery …

Evaluating The Performance Of Estimators In Sem And Irt With Ordinal Variables, Bo Klauth Jun 2023

Evaluating The Performance Of Estimators In Sem And Irt With Ordinal Variables, Bo Klauth

Dissertations

In conducting confirmatory factor analysis with ordered response items, the literature suggests that when the number of responses is five and item skewness (IS) is approximately normal, researchers can employ maximum likelihood with robust standard errors (MLR). However, MLR can yield biased factor loadings (FL) and FL standard errors (FLSE) when the variables are ordinal. Other estimators are available. Unweighted least squares and weighted least squares with adjusted mean and variance (ULSMV and WLSMV) are known as the estimators for CFA with ordinal variables (CFA-OV). Another estimator, marginal maximum likelihood (MML), is used in the item response theory (IRT), specifically …
