Remote Sensing Solutions For Estimating Runoff And Recharge In Arid Environments, Adam M. Milewski Jun 2008

Remote Sensing Solutions For Estimating Runoff And Recharge In Arid Environments, Adam M. Milewski

Dissertations

Efforts to understand and to quantify the interplay between precipitation, runoff, and recharge are often hampered by the paucity of appropriate monitoring systems. We developed methodologies for rainfall-runoff and groundwater recharge computations that heavily rely on observations extracted from a wide-range of global remote sensing data sets (TRMM, SSM/I, AVHRR, and AMSR-E,) using the arid Sinai Peninsula (SP; area: 61,000 km2) and the Eastern Desert (ED; area: 220,000 km2) of Egypt as our test sites. A two-fold exercise was conducted. Temporal remote sensing data (TRMM, AVHRR and AMSR-E) were extracted from global data sets over the …

Exploration Of The Chemical And Biological Processes Through Molecular Dynamics Simulation And Blocklocalized Wavefunction Method, Yuchun Lin

Dissertations

Computer simulation plays a crucial role in interpreting, unifying and guiding experimental observations. In this dissertation, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and the block-localized wavefunction (BLW) method have been used to explore the chemical and biological processes.

Detailed MD simulations were performed to study the transportation of NH4+, NH3 and H2O through the Escherichia coli ammonium transporter (AmtB) membrane protein. A periplasmic recruitment vestibule was identified and the entrance of an NH4+ into this vestibule requires only 3.1 kcal/mol. In the end of this vestibule, the phenyl ring of Phe107 dynamically opens and …

A Qualitative Study Of Buddhist Informed Psychotherapists, Michael Sean Harris Jun 2008

A Qualitative Study Of Buddhist Informed Psychotherapists, Michael Sean Harris

Dissertations

The field of psychology has a history of distancing itself, if not outright dismissing, both religion and spirituality. In recent years, however, psychology has come to move more toward an embrace of religious and spiritual experience. Buddhism, often expressed as a philosophical system without regard to theistic or nontheistic underpinnings, has been integrated with psychological theory in recent scholarly literature. This dissertation is an exploratory study regarding howBuddhist psychological perspectives are applied in actual psychotherapeutic practice. A participant pool of ten psychotherapists who self-identified as utilizing Buddhism in their work was studied along a variety of dimensions. Demographic questionnaires, audiotaped …

Disruptive Effects Of Aβ Oligomers To The Radial-Arm Maze Performance Of Rats, Kineta Lynn Morgan-Paisley

Dissertations

Converging lines of research have implicated a causal relationship between oligomers of amyloid-β and the cognitive impairments associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD); however, very few studies have provided direct experimental evidence of this relationship and none of those studies have used an established model of working memory. The present study used an established model of working memory, the radial-arm maze, to examine the effects of amyloid-β oligomers on the memory of two groups of rats. The experimental group received ICV injections of the culture media (CM) of Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) cells transfected with a human mutation of APP containing …

The Effect Of Substrate Properties On Print Attributes For Gravure Printing - From Proof To Press, Yu Ju Wu Jun 2008

The Effect Of Substrate Properties On Print Attributes For Gravure Printing - From Proof To Press, Yu Ju Wu

Dissertations

Gravure is the major printing process used for publication printing. In gravure printing processes, color proofing is for the purpose of checking the color to ensure that it is as desired. There is no doubt that paper properties have significant effects on the image reproduction for either printing or proofing processes. In order to achieve uniformity of printing and obtain good color reproduction performance, it is important that the all paper properties are well defined and controlled. This study investigates the correlations between paper properties and print quality/color reproduction for gravure publication printing and ink jet printing used in digital …

Mindfulness In Childbirth: An Investigation Of The Effects Of Mindfulness Training On Maternal Satisfaction With Childbirth And Obstetric Outcomes, Brenda L. Bratton Jun 2008

Mindfulness In Childbirth: An Investigation Of The Effects Of Mindfulness Training On Maternal Satisfaction With Childbirth And Obstetric Outcomes, Brenda L. Bratton

Dissertations

This study investigated the effects of mindfulness training on obstetric outcomes and maternal satisfaction with childbirth. We were interested in whether mindfulness training was more effective than a control group receiving psychoeducation on stress reduction. The goal of the intervention group was to increase participants' moment-to-moment awareness of thoughts, feelings, and body sensations during childbirth so that they would respond to these experiences rather than react to them in an automatic manner. These strategies were hypothesized to help a laboring woman minimize fear or anxiety associated with pain and complications and be more adaptive to whatever circumstances arose. Repeated measures …

Intimacy, Elizabeth Knapp Jun 2008

Intimacy, Elizabeth Knapp

Dissertations

In one of his finest poems, "Asphodel, That Greeny Flower," William Carlos Williams writes: "It is difficult / to get the news from poems / but men die miserably everyday / for lack / of what is found there." Earlier, his contemporary, W.H. Auden, had made his famous claim that "poetry makes nothing happen." While the views of the two great modernists appear to be at odds with each other, they are in fact two sides of the same argument, the yin and yang at the center of all true art. For what these poets saw as critical to both …

Synthesis, Characterization, And Catalytic Application Of Gold Nanoparticles, Junhyung Kim Jun 2008

Synthesis, Characterization, And Catalytic Application Of Gold Nanoparticles, Junhyung Kim

Dissertations

Properties of nanometer-sized gold(Au) particles, especially those that are protected by a monolayer coating of thiolate ligands, called 'Monolayer Protected Clusters' (MPCs), are of rigorous multidisciplinary interest for their potential applications in catalysis and electronics due to their variation with size.

In larger core diameter sizes (>1.5nm) AuMPCs show metallic behavior as observed from electrochemical measurements. On the other hand, sub-nanometer ([approximate]1.1nm) AuMPCs exhibit molecule-like electronic behavior which is typical of Au38 nanoparticles. The various alkane chain thiols(C4 S-C12 S) capped Au38 MPCs have been examined with independent analytical tools, producing a remarkably consistent picture of these materials.

The …

Between The City And The Bush: Suburbia In The Contemporary Australian Novel, Nathanael David O'Reilly Jun 2008

Between The City And The Bush: Suburbia In The Contemporary Australian Novel, Nathanael David O'Reilly

Dissertations

Australia's most important national narratives take place in the bush, the outback, and overseas. The dominant representations of Australia, both within the nation and abroad, focus on the outback, the bush and the cities. However, Australia is one of the most suburban societies in the world, and has been since the mid-nineteenth-century. Nevertheless, Australian novels are rarely set in suburbia. Between the City and the Bush examines representations of suburbia in contemporary Australian novels. Focusing on the relationship between colonialism, the physical development of suburbia and the anti-suburban intellectual tradition, my chapters address a number of issues, including immigration, environmental …

Self-Solicited Feedback: Effects Of Hourly Pay And Individual Monetary Incentive Pay, Julie M. Slowiak Jun 2008

Self-Solicited Feedback: Effects Of Hourly Pay And Individual Monetary Incentive Pay, Julie M. Slowiak

Dissertations

The frequency of feedback solicitation under hourly pay and individual monetary incentive pay conditions was examined. A two-group between-subjects design was used with 30 college students in each group. Participants attended three experimental sessions and entered the cash value of simulated bank checks presented on a computer screen. Results indicated that (a) participants who were paid individual monetary incentives did not self-solicit feedback more often than those who were paid an hourly wage, (b) feedback solicitation was not related to individual differences in levels of competition with one's self or competition with others, (c) task performance was higher for individuals …

The Role Of Short Term Synamptic Plasticity In Temporal Coding Of Neuronal Networks, Lakshmi Chandrasekaran May 2008

The Role Of Short Term Synamptic Plasticity In Temporal Coding Of Neuronal Networks, Lakshmi Chandrasekaran

Dissertations

Short term synaptic plasticity is a phenomenon which is commonly found in the central nervous system. It could contribute to functions of signal processing namely, temporal integration and coincidence detection by modulating the input synaptic strength. This dissertation has two parts. First we study the effects of short term synaptic plasticity in enhancing coincidence detecting ability of neurons in the avian auditory brainstem. Coincidence detection means a target neuron has a higher firing rate when it receives simultaneous inputs from different neurons as opposed to inputs with large phase delays. This property is used by birds in sound localization. When …

This dissertation is to develop a parcel-based spatial land use change prediction model by coupling various machine learning and interpretation algorithms such as cellular automata (CA) and decision tree (DT). CA is a collection of cells that evolves through a number of discrete time steps according to a set of transition rules based on the state of each cell and the characteristics of its neighboring cells. DT is a data mining and machine learning tool that extracts the patterns of decision process from observed cell behaviors and their affecting factors. In this dissertation, CA is used to predict the future …

Density Relaxation Of Granular Matter Through Monte Carlo And Granular Dynamics Simulations, Oleksandr M. Dybenko May 2008

Density Relaxation Of Granular Matter Through Monte Carlo And Granular Dynamics Simulations, Oleksandr M. Dybenko

Dissertations

Granular materials are the principal ingredients of the industrial complex involved with the handling and processing of bulk solids including pharmaceuticals, chemicals, agricultural and mining materials. Despite the enormous importance of these materials in society, their behavior is not well-understood; in fact, there is no known model available that is capable of predicting the wide range of phenomenon that have been observed. One of the most important of these is known as density relaxation. Here, a granular material undergoes an increase in solids fraction as a result of the application of discrete taps or continuous vibrations.

In this dissertation, the …

Roles Of Gap Junctions In Neuronal Networks, Joon Ha May 2008

Roles Of Gap Junctions In Neuronal Networks, Joon Ha

Dissertations

This dissertation studies the roles of gap junctions in the dynamics of neuronal networks in three distinct problems. First, we study the circumstances under which a network of excitable cells coupled by gap junctions exhibits sustained activity. We investigate how network connectivity and refractory length affect the sustainment of activity in an abstract network. Second, we build a mathematical model for gap junctionally coupled cables to understand the voltage response along the cables as a function of cable diameter. For the coupled cables, as cable diameter increases, the electrotonic distance decreases, which cause the voltage to attenuate less, but the …

Appropriation Of Privacy Management Within Social Networking Sites, Catherine Dwyer May 2008

Appropriation Of Privacy Management Within Social Networking Sites, Catherine Dwyer

Dissertations

Social networking sites have emerged as one of the most widely used types of interactive systems, with memberships numbering in the hundreds of millions around the globe. By providing tools for their members to manage an ever-changing set of relationships, social networking sites push a constant expansion of social boundaries. These sites place less emphasis on tools that limit social boundaries to enable privacy.

The rapid expansion of online social boundaries has caused privacy shockwaves. Privacy offline is enabled by constraints of time and space. Online, powerful search engines and long term digital storage means private data have no expiration …

Instabilities Of Volatile Films And Drops, Nebojsa Murisic May 2008

Instabilities Of Volatile Films And Drops, Nebojsa Murisic

Dissertations

We report on instabilities during spreading of volatile liquids, with emphasis on the novel instability observed when isopropyl alcohol (IPA) is deposited on a monocrystalline silicon (Si) wafer. This instability is characterized by emission of drops ahead of the expanding front, with each drop followed by smaller, satellite droplets, forming the structures which we nickname “octopi” due to their appearance. A less volatile liquid, or a substrate of larger heat conductivity, suppress this instability. In addition, we examine the spreading of drops of water (DJW)-JPA mixtures on both Si wafers and plain glass slides, and describe the variety of contact …

Signal Transmission In Epithelial Layers, Filippo Posta May 2008

Signal Transmission In Epithelial Layers, Filippo Posta

Dissertations

Cell signaling is at the basis of many biological processes such as development, tissue repair, and homeostasis. It can be carried out by different mechanisms. Here we are focusing on ligand mediated cell-to-cell signaling in which a molecule (ligand) is free to move into the extra-cellular medium. On the cell layer surface, it can bind to its molecule-specific receptors located on the cell plasma membrane. This mechanism is the subject of many experimental and theoretical studies on many model biological systems, such as the follicular epithelium of the Drosophila egg, which motivates this work.

Here, we present a general mathematical …

Data Allocation In Disk Arrays With Multiple Raid Levels, Jun Xu May 2008

Data Allocation In Disk Arrays With Multiple Raid Levels, Jun Xu

Dissertations

There has been an explosion in the amount of generated data, which has to be stored reliably because it is not easily reproducible. Some datasets require frequent read and write access. like online transaction processing applications. Others just need to be stored safely and read once in a while, as in data mining. This different access requirements can be solved by using the RAID (redundant array of inexpensive disks) paradigm. i.e., RAIDi for the first situation and RAID5 for the second situation. Furthermore rather than providing two disk arrays with RAID 1 and RAID5 capabilities, a controller can be postulated …

Production Of Nanocrystalline Rdx By Ress : Development And Material Characterization, Victor Stepanov

Dissertations

The aim of the present work was to address the hazardous vulnerability of energetic materials to accidental initiation. An improved form of the explosive RDX with a significantly reduced sensitivity to stimuli including shock and impact was sought. The direction of this research was to investigate the effect of RDX crystal size reduction down to nano-scale dimensions on the sensitivity characteristics. Although size reduction of energetic crystals has been demonstrated often to result in a sensitivity reduction, the effect at the nano-scale particle size has not been investigated.

To generate nanocrystalline RDX a recrystallization process was developed based on rapid …

Optimal Allocation Of Blood Products, Godson A. Tetteh May 2008

Optimal Allocation Of Blood Products, Godson A. Tetteh

Dissertations

The high cost of collection and the short shelf life of apheresis platelets demand efficient inventory management to reduce outdates and shortages. Apheresis platelets are licensed for seven days, and blood centers are keen on knowing the consequences of various product collection and distribution strategies. To reduce outdates, inventory managers typically distribute the older units first, thereby following first-in first-out (FIFO) policy; however, hospital blood banks would prefer that the blood center issues out the freshest units first, equivalent to a last-in first-out (LIFO) policy. This study addresses the optimal distribution policy to achieve a desired outdate, shortage and average …

Optical Properties And Carrier Transport In Si/ Si1-Xgex Nanostructures, Eun Kyu Lee May 2008

Optical Properties And Carrier Transport In Si/ Si1-Xgex Nanostructures, Eun Kyu Lee

Dissertations

Defect-free epitaxial growth of Ge on a ~4 % lattice-mismatched single-crystal Si substrate is achieved using reduced dimension nanoscale heterostructures, where efficient structural relaxation might occur due to an enhanced adatom migrations and high surface-to-volume ratio. For development of novel electronic or optical devices based on these novel structures, understanding of their electrical and optical properties is crucial. This study explores the optical properties and carrier transport in two different types of Si/Si 1-xGe xnanostructures: Ge nanowires (NWs) forming nanoscale heterojunctions with Si substrates and multilayers of SiGe clusters embedded into a Si matrix.

Micron-long Ge nanowires grown …

Dynamics Of Online Chat, Mihai Moldovan May 2008

Dynamics Of Online Chat, Mihai Moldovan

Dissertations

Millions of people use online synchronous chat networks on a daily basis for work, play and education. Despite their widespread use, little is known about their user dynamics. For example, one does not know how many users are typically co-present and actively engaged in public interaction in the individual chat rooms of any of the numerous public Internet Relay Chat (IRC) networks found on the Internet; or what are the factors that constrain the boundaries of user activity inside those chat rooms. Failure to collect and present such data means there is a lack of a good understanding of the …
