Molecular Expression Of Neuroprotective And Neurodestructive Signaling Systems Following Axotomy-Induced Target Disconnection: Relevance To Als, Melissa Marie Haulcomb
Molecular Expression Of Neuroprotective And Neurodestructive Signaling Systems Following Axotomy-Induced Target Disconnection: Relevance To Als, Melissa Marie Haulcomb
Dissertations
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is the most common adult motoneuron (MN) degenerative disease. Discovery of a portion of familial cases with a mutation in the gene superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) gene led to the development of a transgenic mouse model. Pre-symptomatic SOD1 mice show no symptoms well into adulthood, however once symptom onset has occurred they display pathological hallmarks of ALS. The initial pathological event is loss of neuromuscular junctions in the lower limbs and therefore the die-back theory of ALS, suggests disconnection from the target musculature leads to MN degeneration. Our lab utilizes a peripheral nerve injury model to …
Pax Ecclesia: Globalization And Catholic Literary Modernism, Christopher Wachal
Pax Ecclesia: Globalization And Catholic Literary Modernism, Christopher Wachal
Dissertations
The transnational turn in literary studies has brought new rubrics and critical vocabularies to the study of cultures experiencing the destabilizing effects of globalization. It gives special attention to the ways cultural forms, including literature, must be reformulated in the absence of the coherence of the nation-state. Often unremarked upon, however, is the role of religion in providing other channels of affinity around which to cohere. Many writers in the 20th century respond to the shocks of globalizing modernity by writing in light of particular faith traditions, especially the aesthetic strategies and thematic concerns that characterize the Catholic literary tradition. …
A Salutogenic Framework To Understand Disparity In Breast Cancer Screening Behavior In African American Women, Regina Conway-Phillips
A Salutogenic Framework To Understand Disparity In Breast Cancer Screening Behavior In African American Women, Regina Conway-Phillips
Dissertations
African American women (AAW) have the highest breast cancer mortality rate than any other racial or ethnic group. Limited access to care reduces mammography screening for AAW. Despite barriers, some AAW engage in breast cancer screening (BCS) behaviors like mammography. The salutogenic theory of health focuses on positive health behaviors and offers a framework to understand personal factors which allow some AAW to overcome adversity and engage in BCS. Sense of coherence (SOC) is central to salutogenic theory. Individuals with greater SOC utilize available resources to attain optimal health. This study: 1) Evaluated the contribution of SOC, social support and …

Global Distributive Justice After Rawls: A Modified Poggean Argument For How We Harm The World's Poorest, Mark Chakoian
Dissertations
This work presents an analysis of Thomas Pogge's approach to the problem of world poverty as presented in World Poverty and Human Rights. It begins by situating the project of Pogge relative to the work of his predecessor John Rawls. It then moves on to compare Pogge's negative-duty approach to more common positive-duty approaches by discussing the relative merits and weaknesses of the approach of Peter Singer to the problem of poverty. The remaining chapters give an in-depth analysis of Pogge's argument itself. Although there are significant holes and inconsistencies in Pogge's approach, a reformulated argument that preserves his original …

THINKING THROUGH THE PHENOMENON OF TRUST: A PHILOSOPHICAL INVESTIGATION
The phenomenon of trust is historically underrepresented as a topic of serious investigation in Western philosophy. This dissertation investigates the integral role that trust plays in enabling and sustaining meaning and significance in human existence. This thesis is substantiated in the following ways.
First, I explicate various senses and ways of thinking about trust in the work of two historically important philosophers, Plato and Nietzsche. I show that Socrates, in Plato's dialogue Phaedo, articulates the feeling of being entrusted with life, a feeling that one experiences as a …

Images Of God, Imago Dei And God's Relationship With Humanity Through The Image Of Mary's Breast Milk: A Focus Upon Sor María Anna Águeda De San Ignacio (1695-1756), Neomi Dolores Deanda
Dissertations
This dissertation presents an original contribution to the academic field of Theology, specifically Constructive Theology, because it begins the retrieval work of a woman's voice from seventeenth and eighteenth century Mexico, an entire area of historical and theological thought which has been globally under-explored. Analysis of María Anna Águeda de San Ignacio's eighteenth century original publications give a glimpse into this woman's official authority during her time, which also presents a historical woman's voice who has held ecclesial authority.
This project engages María Anna Águeda de San Ignacio's work to draw theological insights and further expand understandings about notions of …

Globalizing Kenyan Culture: Jua Kali & The Transformation Of Contemporary Kenyan Art: 1960-2010, Margaretta H. Swigert
Dissertations
In an age of globalization, when as a result of enhanced telecommunication and global media, the world's population is more interconnected than ever, the public at large still tends to associate Africa with poverty, disease and political instability. Yet keen observers of the social landscape have observed that despite Africa's legacy of woes, cultural productivity in the region is on the rise, leading scholars to refer to the phenomenon as an African Renaissance. This is particularly the case in Kenya where a contemporary art movement is flourishing through both local and global art networks. But the question remains: how in …
Introducing The Common Good Index And A Common Good Immigration Ethic, Ana Bedard
Introducing The Common Good Index And A Common Good Immigration Ethic, Ana Bedard
Dissertations
The U.S. and Mexican bishops, in their influential pastoral letter Strangers No Longer, frame immigration ethics through the lens of solidarity with the immigrant. This frame leads them to erroneously interpret the preferential option for the poor and ignore potential harm to poor U.S. citizens caused by recent undocumented immigration from Mexico and other countries. A better framework to immigration ethics is a specified common good approach, which is created in this dissertation. This approach uses the definition of the common good found in Catholic social thought and concretizes it through using a theological anthropology based in Martha Nussbaum's human …
The Impact Of Treating Major Depression During Pregnancy On The Postpartum Phase, Jamie Kent
The Impact Of Treating Major Depression During Pregnancy On The Postpartum Phase, Jamie Kent
Dissertations
Major depression during pregnancy is a risk factor for postpartum depression (PPD). Medically acceptable treatments for depression during pregnancy and postpartum are limited and many women are turning to complementary and alternative treatments. The current project examined whether treatment of major depression during pregnancy reduced the risk for PPD and explored predictors of PPD in this high-risk sample. One hundred twenty women were clinically assessed using the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HRSD17), the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II), and the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV (SCID) at ten weeks, six months, and nine months postpartum following random assignment to one …

Professional And Personal Lives Of Psychologists: Spillover, Family Functioning, And Life Satsiafction, Pedja Stevanovic
Dissertations
Two-wave, longitudinal data from a national, web-based survey of doctoral psychologists was used to examine work life, spillover, family, and personal lives. A measure of spillover, Stressors and Enhancers for Psychologists, was also evaluated. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated two negatively correlated dimensions of work spillover: positive spillover termed family enhancers and negative spillover termed family stressors. This measure was significantly related to a widely used, more general measure of positive and negative spillover and demonstrated high temporal stability. Respondents reported a significantly higher incidence of family enhancers than family stressors at both data collection points. Consistent with previous research, the …
Moving To The Level Of Representation To Explain Variations In Family Child Care Provider Sensitivity And The Effectiveness Of Child-Related Training, Diana Davidson Schaack
Moving To The Level Of Representation To Explain Variations In Family Child Care Provider Sensitivity And The Effectiveness Of Child-Related Training, Diana Davidson Schaack
Dissertations
Many young children in the United States spend a substantial amount of time in the care of family child care providers. Previous research has found that when providers are sensitive and responsive to children's needs, children are more likely to develop secure attachment relationships with their providers, which, in turn, have been linked to many developmental benefits for young children. Unfortunately, it appears that many children do not experience the levels of caregiving sensitivity that are necessary to develop secure attachment relationships with their providers and that increased child-related training is not always effective at improving provider caregiving behaviors.
Attachment …

Using Expectation Methods To Estimate A Discrete Choice Model When Individual Choices Are Not Observable: Methodology And Applications To Tillage Choice, Tara R. Wade
Dissertations
This study presents an alternative method of empirical estimation of a logit model that uses the full information on the attributes of agents and only aggregate measures of agents' choices in an application to the estimation of the costs of the adoption of conservation tillage by Iowa farmers. The methodology treats the aggregated data as an expected value-the group average of individual probabilities of choosing conservation tillage subject to measurement error. The study then adapts the new methodology to the distinctive case where the researcher not only has the group expected value but also knows the magnitude of the within …
Development Of Energy Absorbing Laminated Fiberglass Composites Using Electrospun Glass Nanofibers, Evan Kimbro
Development Of Energy Absorbing Laminated Fiberglass Composites Using Electrospun Glass Nanofibers, Evan Kimbro
Dissertations
The ability to predict failure of composite laminates due to delaminations is critical because of its subsurface nature. Traditional strengthening methods such as stitching and Z-pinning, while improving interlaminar properties in woven composites, lead to a reduction of the in-plane properties. Electrospun non-woven sheets of nanofibrous mat applied at interfacial regions offer an option to traditional treatments. Applications where protrusion energy must be dissipated completely would benefit the most from the use of the electrospinning treatment. Examples are bullet proof vests and vehicle armor. Penetration of a projectile through a composite material may be avoided by creating more energy absorbent …

Role Of Notch Signaling In T Cell Polarization, Shilpa Keerthivasan
Role Of Notch Signaling In T Cell Polarization, Shilpa Keerthivasan
Dissertations
The differentiation of CD4+ T cells to different effector lineages in response to pathogenic stimuli is the core of the adaptive immune system. One of the effector subsets recently discovered is Thelper 17 (Th17) and it plays a predominant role in autoimmune diseases and inflammatory disorders.
In my thesis, I aimed to study the role of Notch cell surface receptors in Th17 differentiation. Using in vitro Th17 differentiation assays of human naïve CD4+ T cells, I have shown that Notch signaling, particularly Notch1, plays a crucial role in Th17 polarization. By using pharmacological inhibitors and specific knockdown of Notch1, I …
