There has been much research in the past two decades about the dropout problem in America. Dropout rates have become a focal point for all public schools in the nation largely due to components of the No Child Left Behind Act and the Dropout Prevention Act that associate monetary rewards to schools that raise the graduation completion rates to 90%. The dropout rates for the United States rank the educational system 17th for graduation completion rates among developed countries. Mississippi has repeatedly earned the title of low-ranking among all states in the nation.

The most relevant disciplines, fish toxicogenomics and computational systems biology are reviewed in Chapter 1. Chapter 2 reviews major aspects of DNA microarray technology.

Purpose: To test the reliability and content and construct validity of an instrument developed to assess diabetes knowledge, motivation, and adherence to medical regimes. This research was a mixed-methods study exploring how improvements in understanding—learning—(as measured by a selectedresponse assessment) are reflected in changes in learner language (described in terms of conceptual integration patterns). The individuals, or participants, were all residents of a state-run facility in the southern region of the United States. In response to continued driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI) amongst young adults and increased drinking and driving amongst females, the current study aimed to decrease such risky behavior using threats to appearance as a deterrent. One hundred and thirty-three undergraduates at the University of Southern Mississippi completed a threepart study after sequential assignment to one of three groups, a no-photo group, a crash scene photo group, or a personalized-photo group. This study was designed to investigate the role of attachment anxiety and avoidance in predicting persons' body image, body appreciation, and obligatory exercise behavior. Two hundred and twenty eight participants (100 men and 128 women) completed the Relationship Scales Questionnaire (RSQ; Griffin & Bartholomew, 1994), Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire (MBSRQ; Cash, 2000), Body Appreciation Scale (BAS; Avalos et al., 2005), and Obligatory Exercise Questionnaire (OEQ; Pasman & Thompson, 1988). We examined the responses of Rat (Rattus norvegicus) to the RDX exposure and female fathead minnows (FHM, Pimephales promelas) to a model aromatase inhibitor, fadrozole, using a transcriptional network inference approach. Rats were exposed to RDX and fish were exposed to 0 or 30mg/L fadrozole for 8 days. We analyzed gene expression changes using 8000 probes microarrays for rat experiment and 15,000 probe microarrays for fish. We used these changes to infer a transcriptional network. This study examined the effect of Person-Environment fit, as defined by Holland's (1997) theory, on trait anger, interpersonal conflict at work, and workplace aggression in a sample of employees in the United States. Job satisfaction was also examined with regard to concurrent and discriminant validity information for this sample. Results indicated that there was not a statistically significant effect of Person- Environment fit on trait anger, interpersonal conflict at work, or workplace aggression. The concurrent and discriminant validity of findings was supported through relationships between job satisfaction, Person-Environment fit, and workplace aggression. This descriptive quantitative research study explored if a focus on Reading Apprenticeship strategies and routines in a college level composition class would affect students' metacognitive awareness and comprehension of academic text. Participants included 141 students from one junior college in a southeastern state. The 141 participants were enrolled by choice in six sections of composition taught by three instructors who had all received extensive training in implementing the Reading Apprenticeship framework in their classes. Although the literature has emphasized the importance of understanding between White racial consciousness, feminist identity development and family environment. Based on the relationships described by the canonical functions considered noteworthy in the analyses three main findings appeared to emerge. First, family environments that were perceived by White undergraduate women to promote engagement with a variety of outside perspectives were related to more actively antiracist worldviews and well-developed feminist identities; while family environments perceived to reflect a more insular focus (i.e. less exposure to divergent opinions) were related to more prejudicial racial attitudes and less feminist identity development. The main goal of this dissertation was to examine the processes that shape female mate choice and male reproductive success in an exploded lek species: the White-crowned Manakin (Pipra pipra). The first chapter examined if females select males with certain genetic characteristics to gain indirect fitness benefits. Proteins that regulate mRNA stability often bind to 3' untranslated region (UTR) sequence elements. The red-footed booby (Sula sula) is considered one of the most polymorphic seabirds, with three recognized major adult plumage types: (1) white; (2) white-tailed brown; and (3) brown, and several degrees of intermediates. The ratio of these color morphs varies among populations, with the white morph typically predominating. ABSTRACT This study utilized confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), canonical correlation analysis (CCA), regression analysis (RA), and correlation analysis (CA) for first-round validation of the researcher¿s Dimensions of Intuition (DOI) instrument. The DOI examined 25 personal characteristics and situations purportedly predictive of intuition. Data was collected from 302 respondents, ages 20-79, from differing occupations and educational backgrounds nationwide. Hypothesis 1: CFA disconfirmed the theorized 3- and 21-factor intuition models, finding 15 factors, accounting for 65.6% of the variance, to be the most efficient capture of intuition.
