A Statistical Comparison Of First Time Praxis Ii Pass Rates Between Homegrown 4 Year Students And Transfer Students Of A Medium Size Suburban University: A Six Year Study, Jason Edward Holmes Jr. Apr 2011

A Statistical Comparison Of First Time Praxis Ii Pass Rates Between Homegrown 4 Year Students And Transfer Students Of A Medium Size Suburban University: A Six Year Study, Jason Edward Holmes Jr.

Dissertations

In order to meet the federal mandate specified by the No Child Left Behind Act to demonstrate content competency for teaching certification, students must pass a written examination. Missouri and 37 other states chose the Praxis II to satisfy requirements. Presently, schools of education advertise the passing rate of the Praxis II as 100%, since students can take the Praxis II until they pass. This study examined only the first time Praxis II pass rates for undergraduate students in a medium sized university over a six year period. The quantitative, predictive non-experimental research study statistically analyzed first time Praxis II …

Missouri Charter Schools And Educational Reform, Phillip James Guy Apr 2011

Missouri Charter Schools And Educational Reform, Phillip James Guy

Dissertations

In 1998, Missouri‟s two largest school districts, St. Louis and Kansas City, had become, in the eyes of many, completely dysfunctional. In court-ordered attempts to end desegregation and improve academically, each district built costly and extravagant magnet schools; however, low test scores and high dropout rates continued. These problems, and others, would cause both districts to lose their state accreditations in the next ten years. In an effort to put the focus back on student learning and force these districts to improve, Missouri lawmakers passed Senate Bill 781. This bill allowed charter schools to open and operate within the Kansas …

Women Of Foreign Superstition: Christianity And Gender In Imperial Roman Policy, 57-235., Karl E. Baughman Apr 2011

Women Of Foreign Superstition: Christianity And Gender In Imperial Roman Policy, 57-235., Karl E. Baughman

Dissertations

The relationship between Christianity and the imperial Roman government from 57 to 235 was partially dependent upon the enforcement of traditional gender roles and the exercise of those roles by women in unique positions of influence. Rather than attempt to break free of their defined gender roles, women with distinctive connections to Christianity and the Roman government were, especially during times of crisis, able to influence imperial policies that provided an atmosphere conducive to positive growth for the early Church. This work concentrates on the crises which were connected to gender---especially times during which the emperors failed to fulfill their …

Investigating The Transition Process When Moving From A Spiral Curriculum Alignment Into A Field-Focus Science Curriculum Alignment In Middle School, Randi Kay Alwardt Mar 2011

Investigating The Transition Process When Moving From A Spiral Curriculum Alignment Into A Field-Focus Science Curriculum Alignment In Middle School, Randi Kay Alwardt

Dissertations

This investigation examined the transition from a spiral science curriculum to a field-focus science curriculum in middle school. A spiral science curriculum focuses on a small part of each field of science during each middle school year, more of a general science concept. In contast to that, the base of a field-focus curriculum is that each grade level focuses on a specific field of science, more of a high school like concept. The literature reviewed provides a history of science education, the steps of the change process, and the importance of professional development. The literature review provided a basis for …

Predictors Of Mathematics Majors At The Post-Secondary Level Of Education, Megan L. Reineke Mar 2011

Predictors Of Mathematics Majors At The Post-Secondary Level Of Education, Megan L. Reineke

Dissertations

While there are numerous studies examining the courses students take at the secondary level and how different levels of mathematics courses can affect student achievement in beginning post-secondary mathematics courses, there are no studies that examine math majors at the post-secondary level of education. In addition, many reports stating gender and ethnicity gaps in the field of mathematics fail to discuss the issue surrounding what type of student pursues a mathematics degree. Understanding mathematics majors, including the types of high schools they attended and their ethnicities, may provide some insight into which students are becoming interested in the area of …

An Analysis Of Attendance Policies And High School Attendance Rates, Dawn Michelle Brenner Mar 2011

An Analysis Of Attendance Policies And High School Attendance Rates, Dawn Michelle Brenner

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to ascertain the relationship between the dependent variable, average daily attendance rate, and the independent variables, socio-economic status, student enrollment, and the type of attendance policy implemented in the 85 public high schools in southwest Missouri. The types of attendance policies were sorted into one of three pre-determined categories: punitive, reward, or affective. Data were collected for each of the independent and dependent variables. A percentage was calculated by dividing the number of policy types within each category by the total number of policy types. Then the data were organized based on the average …

Modeling Of Equilibrium Point Trajectory Control In Human Arm Movements, Kai Chen Jan 2011

Modeling Of Equilibrium Point Trajectory Control In Human Arm Movements, Kai Chen

Dissertations

The underlying concept of the Equilibrium Point Hypothesis (EPH) is that the CNS provides a virtual trajectory of joint motion, representing spacing and timing, with actual movement dynamics being produced by interactions of limb inertia, muscle viscosity and speed/position feedback from muscle spindles. To counter criticisms of the EPH, investigators have proposed the use of complex virtual trajectories, non-linear damping, stiffness and time varying stiffness to the EPH model. While these features allow the EPH to adequately produce human joint velocities, they conflict with the EPH’s premise of simple pre-planned monotonic control of movement trajectory. As a result, this study …

Study Of Mechanisms Of Phytotoxicity Of Alumina Nanoparticles, Anthony Elijius Jan 2011

Study Of Mechanisms Of Phytotoxicity Of Alumina Nanoparticles, Anthony Elijius

Dissertations

Plant growth inhibitory effect of alumina nanoparticles has recently been reported (Ling Y, Watts D, 2004) but the mechanisms of such an effect are yet to be established. The phytotoxicity of aluminum and some of its compounds is well known, but the rapid expansion of nanotechnology resulting in the introduction of new sets of materials in the nanometer range has led to the development of new approaches, experimental methods and modes of investigation.

In this study, the observed phytotoxic effects of alumina nanoparticles suspension on five plant species (Zea mays, Cucumis sativus, Daucus carota, Brassica oleracea, Lactuca sativa) …

A Molecular Dynamics Simulation Based Principal Component Analysis Framework For Computation Of Multi-Scale Modeling Of Protein And Its Interaction With Solvent, Tao Wu Jan 2011

A Molecular Dynamics Simulation Based Principal Component Analysis Framework For Computation Of Multi-Scale Modeling Of Protein And Its Interaction With Solvent, Tao Wu

Dissertations

This dissertation presents a new computational framework for calculating the normal modes and interactions of proteins, macromolecular assemblies and surrounding solvents. The framework employs a combination of molecular dynamics simulation (MD) and principal component analysis (PCA). It enables the capture and visualization of the molecules' normal modes and interactions over time scales that are computationally challenging. It also provides a starting point for experimental and further computational studies of protein conformational changes.

A protein's function is sometimes linked to its conformational flexibility. Normal mode analysis (NMA) and various extensions of it have provided insights into the conformational fluctuations associated with …

Distributed Synchronization Algorithms For Wireless Sensor Networks, Nicola Varanese Jan 2011

Distributed Synchronization Algorithms For Wireless Sensor Networks, Nicola Varanese

Dissertations

The ability to distribute time and frequency among a large population of interacting agents is of interest for diverse disciplines, inasmuch as it enables to carry out complex cooperative tasks. In a wireless sensor network (WSN), time/frequency synchronization allows the implementation of distributed signal processing and coding techniques, and the realization of coordinated access to the shared wireless medium. Large multi-hop WSN's constitute a new regime for network synchronization, as they call for the development of scalable, fully distributed synchronization algorithms. While most of previous research focused on synchronization at the application layer, this thesis considers synchronization at the lowest …

Modeling Of Magnetic Field Driven Simultaneous Assembly, Rene David Rivero Jan 2011

Modeling Of Magnetic Field Driven Simultaneous Assembly, Rene David Rivero

Dissertations

The Magnetic Field Driven Simultaneous Assembly (MFDSA) is a method that offers a non-statistical and deterministic solution to the problem of assembly via batch processing; a hybrid of serial and parallel processing. The technique requires the use of electromagnets as well as soft and hard magnetic materials that are applied to devices and recesses respectively. The MFDSA approach offers the ability to check and correct errors in real-time and is capable of scalable, versatile, and high-yield integration.

Devices, coated with a layer of soft magnetic material, are moved from initial to final positions along predetermined pathways through the action of …

Model Reference Control For Ultra-High Precision Positioning Systems, Lan Yu Jan 2011

Model Reference Control For Ultra-High Precision Positioning Systems, Lan Yu

Dissertations

Due to the increasing demands of high-density semiconductors, molecular biology, optoelectronics, and MEMS/NEMS in the past decades, control of ultra-high precision positioning using piezoelectricity has become an important area because of its high displacement resolution, wide bandwidth, low power consumption, and potential low cost. However, the relatively small displacement range limits its application. This work proposed a practical ultra-high precision piezoelectric positioning system with a complementary high displacement range actuation technology. Solenoids are low cost, high speed electromagnetic actuators which are commonly used in on-off mode only because of the inherent high nonlinear force-stroke characteristics and unipolar forces (push/pull) generated …

This dissertation contains the results of three related novel investigations in the field of structure-property-processing relationships of pharmaceutical polymer-based products. They are: a) modification of a pharmaceutical anionic nanoclay with two different Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) to produce nanohybrid API carriers intended to be used alone or in acrylic polymer matrices, b) comparison of binary systems containing the above APIs in the selected acrylic polymers in terms of their miscibilities with the polymer, but in the absence of nanoclay, and c) comparison of the polymer/API binary systems with ternary polymer/API/Clay systems.

For the first study, the calcination method which can …

Pattern Formation In Oscillatory Systems, Hui Wu Jan 2011

Pattern Formation In Oscillatory Systems, Hui Wu

Dissertations

Synchronization is a kind of ordinary phenomenon in nature, the study of it includes many mathematical branches. Phase space is one of the most powerful inventions of modern mathematical science. There are two variables, the position and velocity, that can describe the 2-dimensional phase space system. For example, the state of pendulum may be specified by its position and its velocity, so its phase space is 2-dimensional. The state of the system at a given time has a unique corresponding point in the phase space. In order to describe the motion of an oscillator, we can talk about its motion …

Developing Anaerobic Digestion Cooperatives In Ireland, Aoife Ní Ruanaigh, John Mcgrory Jan 2011

Developing Anaerobic Digestion Cooperatives In Ireland, Aoife Ní Ruanaigh, John Mcgrory

Dissertations

Anaerobic Digestion (AD) is a natural process of decomposition and decay that takes place in the absence of oxygen and by which organic matter is broken down to its simpler chemical components. AD plants could help Ireland meet its requirements under a number of EU Directives as landfills release far more greenhouse gas emissions than other forms of waste treatment. It is estimated that 37 million tonnes per year of animal manure are stored on farms before disposal. There are also 676,000 tonnes of municipal food and garden waste produced annually. This waste could be used in AD plants to …

Autonomy Through Social Skill Development: A Camp Intervention For Young People With Spina Bifida, Lauren Nicole Zurenda

Dissertations

Spina bifida is a complex condition that presents multiple physical and psychosocial challenges to autonomy development. Pediatric psychology may play a role in promoting autonomy development in this population through the implementation of empirically-supported, developmentally-appropriate, and syndrome-specific interventions. The current study was one attempt to meet the need for such interventions.

This study represents one step in a line of intervention research designed to promote autonomy gains among young people with spina bifida. Its purpose was to evaluate a manual-based curriculum as a part of a one-week long overnight camp exclusively for young people with spina bifida. It was hypothesized …

Mechanism For Pre-B Cell Loss In Mutant Ali/Ali Rabbits, Gregory Robert Robbins Jan 2011

Mechanism For Pre-B Cell Loss In Mutant Ali/Ali Rabbits, Gregory Robert Robbins

Dissertations

Pre-B cell receptor (pre-BCR) signaling is a critical checkpoint in B cell development in which B-lineage cells expressing functional μ-chains undergo selective expansion. My dissertation work used a rabbit model system to study how VH structure affects the early stages of B cell development in the bone marrow (BM). Developing B cells in mutant ali/ali rabbits predominantly utilize VH4 during VDJ gene rearrangement. However, most of the VH4-utilizing B cells encounter a severe block early in B cell development. In contrast, wildtype rabbit B cells predominantly rearrange VH1, a gene >90% identical to VH4, and develop normally. We hypothesized that …

Molecular Expression Of Neuroprotective And Neurodestructive Signaling Systems Following Axotomy-Induced Target Disconnection: Relevance To Als, Melissa Marie Haulcomb Jan 2011

Molecular Expression Of Neuroprotective And Neurodestructive Signaling Systems Following Axotomy-Induced Target Disconnection: Relevance To Als, Melissa Marie Haulcomb

Dissertations

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is the most common adult motoneuron (MN) degenerative disease. Discovery of a portion of familial cases with a mutation in the gene superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) gene led to the development of a transgenic mouse model. Pre-symptomatic SOD1 mice show no symptoms well into adulthood, however once symptom onset has occurred they display pathological hallmarks of ALS. The initial pathological event is loss of neuromuscular junctions in the lower limbs and therefore the die-back theory of ALS, suggests disconnection from the target musculature leads to MN degeneration. Our lab utilizes a peripheral nerve injury model to …

Neuroendocrine Consequences Of Binge Alcohol Exposure During Peri-Puberty On Functioning Of The Hypothalamo-Pituitary-Adrenal (Hpa) Axis, Magdalena Malgorzata Przybycien-Szymanska Jan 2011

Neuroendocrine Consequences Of Binge Alcohol Exposure During Peri-Puberty On Functioning Of The Hypothalamo-Pituitary-Adrenal (Hpa) Axis, Magdalena Malgorzata Przybycien-Szymanska

Dissertations

Binge alcohol (EtOH) exposure in adolescence is a fundamental health concern. In 2005, over 20% of teenagers between ages 15 and 17 reported binge drinking behavior within a one month period preceding the survey (Dept. of Health and Human Services: Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration). Binge drinking is defined as consuming enough alcohol within a 2.0 h period to bring blood alcohol concentration above 0.08%. In the adolescent population, this type of alcohol exposure tends to be repeated. In adults, alcohol abuse has been correlated with increased incidence of mood disorders and these disorders are characterized by dysregulation …

The Role Of Sdf1/Cxcr4 Signaling In Opioid-Induced Hypernociception, Natalie Wilson Jan 2011

The Role Of Sdf1/Cxcr4 Signaling In Opioid-Induced Hypernociception, Natalie Wilson

Dissertations

Opioids currently represent the best treatment option for severe and chronic pain conditions. Opioids while effective at controlling pain states also come with a number of side effects such as respiratory depression, urinary retention, dependence, tolerance, and opioid-induced hypernociception (OIH). OIH is a phenomenon in which opioids induce pain and this pain is often experienced at a site separate from the site of injury. Much research has been conducted investigating the mechanism of OIH, but the mechanism remains unsolved. One potential mechanism that has yet to be adequately explored is chemokines. Chemokines role in OIH is warranted given recent studies …

Patriarchy, Christianity, And The African Hiv/Aids Epidemic: Rethinking Christian Marriage In Light Of The Experiences Of Hiv Positive Women In Tanzania, Melissa Danielle Browning Jan 2011

Patriarchy, Christianity, And The African Hiv/Aids Epidemic: Rethinking Christian Marriage In Light Of The Experiences Of Hiv Positive Women In Tanzania, Melissa Danielle Browning

Dissertations

Given that women and girls carry the heaviest burdens of the African HIV/AIDS epidemic, their lived experiences should be the starting point for any pedagogy of prevention. In light of this claim, this dissertation project uses qualitative fieldwork with HIV positive women living in Mwanza, Tanzania to ask why marriage is an HIV/AIDS risk factor. By beginning with women's experience as a hermeneutical lens, this dissertation seeks to establish a creative space where African women can imagine new alternatives to HIV/AIDS prevention that would promote human flourishing and abundant life in African communities. The aim of this dissertation is to …

Mechanisms Of Adenovirus Membrane Permeabilization, Oana Maier Jan 2011

Mechanisms Of Adenovirus Membrane Permeabilization, Oana Maier

Dissertations

For a successful infection to occur, a virus must first penetrate host cell membranes to access intracellular sites of viral replication. Currently the mechanism through which adenovirus, a non-enveloped, dsDNA virus, disrupts the endosomal membrane during cell entry is not well characterized.

Recent studies suggest that adenovirus protein VI, which is released from the interior of the capsid during cell entry, has all of the in vitro membrane lytic activity of the virion. We found that protein VI binds membranes via an amino-terminal 80 residue α-helical domain. Critical to this interaction are conserved hydrophobic and basic lysine residues within this …

Cofactors In Coronavirus Entry, Ana Shulla Jan 2011

Cofactors In Coronavirus Entry, Ana Shulla

Dissertations

Viruses have evolved complex ways to penetrate host barriers and cause disease. One of the most important barriers the virus has to cross is the cellular membrane. Enveloped viruses accomplish this task by viral glycoprotein-mediated binding to host cells and fusion of virus and host cell membranes. For the coronaviruses, viral spike (S) proteins execute these cell entry functions. In my dissertation research I focused on understanding the coronavirus spike proteins as well as other cofactors required for S-mediated entry into cells.

The S proteins are set apart from other viral and cellular membrane fusion proteins by their extensively palmitoylated …

The Impact Of Treating Major Depression During Pregnancy On The Postpartum Phase, Jamie Kent Jan 2011

The Impact Of Treating Major Depression During Pregnancy On The Postpartum Phase, Jamie Kent

Dissertations

Major depression during pregnancy is a risk factor for postpartum depression (PPD). Medically acceptable treatments for depression during pregnancy and postpartum are limited and many women are turning to complementary and alternative treatments. The current project examined whether treatment of major depression during pregnancy reduced the risk for PPD and explored predictors of PPD in this high-risk sample. One hundred twenty women were clinically assessed using the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HRSD17), the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II), and the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV (SCID) at ten weeks, six months, and nine months postpartum following random assignment to one …

Professional And Personal Lives Of Psychologists: Spillover, Family Functioning, And Life Satsiafction, Pedja Stevanovic Jan 2011

Professional And Personal Lives Of Psychologists: Spillover, Family Functioning, And Life Satsiafction, Pedja Stevanovic

Dissertations

Two-wave, longitudinal data from a national, web-based survey of doctoral psychologists was used to examine work life, spillover, family, and personal lives. A measure of spillover, Stressors and Enhancers for Psychologists, was also evaluated. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated two negatively correlated dimensions of work spillover: positive spillover termed family enhancers and negative spillover termed family stressors. This measure was significantly related to a widely used, more general measure of positive and negative spillover and demonstrated high temporal stability. Respondents reported a significantly higher incidence of family enhancers than family stressors at both data collection points. Consistent with previous research, the …

Black Club Women's Purposes For Establishing Kindergartens In The Progressive Era, 1890-1910, Jean Marie Robbins Jan 2011

Black Club Women's Purposes For Establishing Kindergartens In The Progressive Era, 1890-1910, Jean Marie Robbins

Dissertations

Little literature exists that examines black people's efforts to educate their young children during the Progressive Era. It was the period in which early childhood education in the form of kindergarten began to flourish in the United States and around the world. Even in the abundance of literature about kindergarten's successes and its potential to transform impoverished families, the overwhelmingly poor black population remained invisible to the great majority of researchers writing about the progress of that movement.

Yet primary historical documents, such as the National Association of Colored Women's Clubs (NACW) records, manuscripts, and Progressive Era newspapers, reveal that …
