Applying Andragogical Principles To Corporate Medical Sales Training, Benjamin C. Washington Ii
Applying Andragogical Principles To Corporate Medical Sales Training, Benjamin C. Washington Ii
Dissertations
This qualitative action research study investigated how to apply andragogical principles to corporate medical sales training. The study stemmed from a practitioner’s concern that instructional methodologies may be insufficient for the learning needs of medical sales representatives in the post-2008 recession climate, which was requiring greater return on investment and performance accountability. The phenomenon of sales representatives being in the field one day and the next day being deemed ‘trainers’ exposed several gaps in sales training programs primarily originating from instructor deficiencies in curriculum development, instructional design, and weakness in application of adult learning methodologies. Andragogy, a learning theory on …

Paris Burn, Iliana Rocha
Paris Burn, Iliana Rocha
Dissertations
First and foremost, Paris Burn- interrogates language as a rebel heteroglot in its relation to power and to identity, focusing on liminality and marginality. The speakers in these poems constantly (re)enact, generate, disassemble, and revise their lyric selves, either reaffirming or challenging dominant discourses and ideologies. Drag queens figure prominently throughout the manuscript because they are the physical embodiment of constructs that challenge an essential identity—race, ethnicity, sexuality, and gender. The title, an abbreviated form of Paris is Burning, an influential 1980s documentary profiling drag culture in New York City, invokes a physical body that figures in metaphorical relation to …

The Learning Needs Of Community College Emerging Scholars, Janet K. Walsh
Dissertations
The community college mission has always centered on providing higher education opportunities for all people (American Association of Community Colleges [AACC], 2015a; Bailey, Jaggars, & Jenkins, 2015; Dassance, 2011; Dotzler, 2003; Greenburg, 2008; Schuh, Jones, Harper, & Associates, 2011). However, many students who enrolled at the community college level were not college ready and often required developmental coursework to help bridge the knowledge gap prior to taking college level courses. Unfortunately, those students were unlikely to obtain higher education credentials (Bailey et al., 2015; Carnegie Foundation, 2014). On the other hand, the researcher observed a relatively small number of students …
Laboratory Studies Of The Biodegradation Of Chemically Dispersed Oil: Effect Of Droplet Size And Nutrient Amendment, Christopher D'Ambrose
Laboratory Studies Of The Biodegradation Of Chemically Dispersed Oil: Effect Of Droplet Size And Nutrient Amendment, Christopher D'Ambrose
Dissertations
Oil spills could have devastating effects on the shorelines, and for this reason, chemical dispersants are commonly used to disperse the oil slick in the water column, preventing it from reaching the shorelines. However, the long term fate of dispersed oil depends on its biodegradation by indigenous microorganisms, which in turn depends on the concentration of nutrients in water and on the droplet size distribution.
Using water from the shorelines of Atlantic City, we placed the water with oil and dispersant inside EPA Baffled Flasks and placed them on rotatory shakers. We selected two speeds: high (250 rpm) and low …

Dissertations
This dissertation focusses on terahertz (THz) wireless communication technology in different weather conditions. The performance of the communication links is mainly studied under propagation through atmospheric turbulence and rain. However, as real outdoor weather conditions are temporally and spatially varying, it is difficult to obtain reproducible atmospheric conditions to verify results of independent measurements making it a challenge to measure and analyze the impact of outdoor atmospheric weather on communication links. Consequently, dedicated indoor weather chambers are designed to produce controllable weather conditions to emulate the real outdoor weather as closely as possible. To emulate turbulent air conditions, an enclosed …

Parental Involvement, Socio-Economic Status And Students' Perceptions Of The Classroom Learning Environmnet As Predictors Of 8th Grade Students Academic Achievement: A Structural Equation Model, Allyson Blandin
Dissertations
Problem
Academic achievement among the nation’s youth has been on the decline for decades. The statistics from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) paints a bleak picture of the academic performance of more than half of the 4th and 8th grade students being below the required levels of proficiency in reading and mathematics. This is evidence that a problem of low academic achievement exists among certain student groups within the public education system. Therefore, it creates an academic achievement gap, which is reflected in the disparity in the standardized scores between students of color from low socio-economic status with …

Dissertations
Organized activities (OA) are a major context of adolescent development which are linked with positive development outcomes, yet the research is limited in understanding predictors of involvement and mechanisms that explain its effect. Using longitudinal data from a subsample of youth enrolled in the Project on Human Development in Chicago Neighborhoods (N = 1,043), this study examined relations between neighborhood characteristics (i.e., perceived neighborhood safety and neighborhood collective efficacy) and parent characteristics (i.e., parental supervision and parental warmth) and participation in organized activities (OA) at multiple points in adolescence, and whether these relations varied by age and sex. This study …
Inhibition Of B Lymphopoiesis By Adipocytes And Myeloid-Derived Suppressor Cells, Domenick Kennedy
Inhibition Of B Lymphopoiesis By Adipocytes And Myeloid-Derived Suppressor Cells, Domenick Kennedy
Dissertations
B lymphopoiesis declines with age in humans, mice, and rabbits. Impaired B lymphopoiesis correlates with increased fat in the bone marrow (BM), suggesting that adipocytes negatively regulate this process. In fact, adipocyte factors were found to inhibit B cell development in BM cultures.
Our goal was to understand the mechanism by which adipocytes inhibit B cell development. Through culturing mouse BM cells on OP9 stromal cells in the presence of adipocyte-conditioned medium (ACM), we found that adipocytes promote the accumulation of CD11b+Gr1+ myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs). These cells were not simply bystanders, as we report for the first time that …
Regulation Of The Subunits Of Hypoxia Inducible Factors By Sprouty2 And Its Impact On Different Biological Processes, Kristin Caroline Hicks
Regulation Of The Subunits Of Hypoxia Inducible Factors By Sprouty2 And Its Impact On Different Biological Processes, Kristin Caroline Hicks
Dissertations
The hypoxia inducible factors (HIF1α, HIF2α, HIF1β) promote transcription of genes that regulate glycolysis and cell survival and growth. Sprouty2 (Spry2) is a modulator of receptor tyrosine kinase signaling and inhibits cell proliferation via different mechanisms. Because of the seemingly opposite actions of the HIF and Spry2 on cellular processes, we hypothesized that Spry2 decreases the protein levels of HIF1α, HIF2α and HIF1β by enhancing the proximity of the HIF subunit to an ubiquitin ligase capable of degrading the subunit. Focusing on HIF1α as a prototypical alpha subunit, in a variety of tumor derived cell lines, Spry2 decreases the protein …
Studies Into The Allosteric Regulation Of Adp-Glucose Pyrophosphorylases, Benjamin Luke Hill
Studies Into The Allosteric Regulation Of Adp-Glucose Pyrophosphorylases, Benjamin Luke Hill
Dissertations
The synthesis of glycogen in bacteria and starch in plants is allosterically controlled by the production of ADP-glucose by ADP-glucose pyrophosphorylase. Using computational studies, site directed mutagenesis, and kinetic characterization, and protein crystallography we found a critical region for transmitting the allosteric signal in the Escherichia coli and A. tumefaciens ADP-glucose pyrophosphorylase. Molecular dynamics simulations and structural comparisons with other ADP-glucose pyrophosphorylases provided information to hypothesize communication pathways that link allosteric and active sites, and this was tested by site-directed mutagenesis and kinetic characterization of the mutant enzymes. In addition, the application of x-ray crystallography enabled the pinpointing of the …
Heart And Sole: The Functional Role Of Fast-Skeletal Myosin Binding Protein-C In Cardiac And Skeletal Muscle, Brian Leei Lin
Heart And Sole: The Functional Role Of Fast-Skeletal Myosin Binding Protein-C In Cardiac And Skeletal Muscle, Brian Leei Lin
Dissertations
The goal of my dissertation was to compare and contrast the function of all three major isoforms of Myosin Binding Protein-C (MyBP-C): slow-skeletal, fast-skeletal, and cardiac (ssMyBP-C, fsMyBP-C, and cMyBP-C, respectively), with a focus on the least characterized isoform, fsMyBP-C. Using a variety of ex vivo, in vitro, and in silico methods, my research demonstrated that the N-terminal region of all MyBP-C isoforms bind to actin and shift tropomyosin, thus activating the thin filament during contraction. Furthermore, each isoform differentially activated the thin filament over isoform-specific ranges of Ca2+: slow-skeletal activates at low Ca2+, fast-skeletal activates at higher Ca2+, and …

The Impact Of Altered T Cell Receptor—Peptide-Major Histocompatibility Complex Interactions On Antigen Recognition And T Cell Function, Timothy T. Spear
The Impact Of Altered T Cell Receptor—Peptide-Major Histocompatibility Complex Interactions On Antigen Recognition And T Cell Function, Timothy T. Spear
Dissertations
Adoptive cell transfer (ACT) using T cell receptor (TCR) gene-modified T cells is an exciting and rapidly evolving field. Numerous basic science and clinical studies have demonstrated various levels of feasibility, safety, and efficacy using TCR-engineered T cells to treat cancer and viral infections. Genomic instability of targeted diseases, however, requires effective and safe TCRs to cross-recognize mutated antigens while minimizing on- or off-target toxicities. Thus, improvements to T cell-based therapeutics mandate a broader understanding of the principles governing antigen recognition. This dissertation addresses critical biologic questions evaluating which parameters are most important in facilitating antigen recognition, and how alterations …
No Taxation Without Discrimination: The Racial Politics Of American Property Taxes, Kasey Henricks
No Taxation Without Discrimination: The Racial Politics Of American Property Taxes, Kasey Henricks
Dissertations
No longer is it acceptable to rationalize racial hierarchy in explicit terms. Today’s ideology substitutes these explanations for cultural ones that diminish racial oppression. Though recent studies uncover the slippery, covert, and seemingly nonracial discourse of colorblindness, claims of ideological progression are offered without empirical verification. Examining debate surrounding the three-fifths clause of the U.S Constitution, I complete a “historical ethnographic content analysis” that transplants colorblind ideology into historical soil some presume it does not belong. The data derive from “A Century of Lawmaking for a New Nation” and consist of 1,493 pages of congressional record. My findings reveal how …
