The Influence Of Defects: Oxidation Of Non-Planar Transition Metal Model Catalysts, Maxwell Gillum
The Influence Of Defects: Oxidation Of Non-Planar Transition Metal Model Catalysts, Maxwell Gillum
Dissertations
Metal-catalyzed oxidation reactions are a major application of heterogeneous catalysis and are a widely applied synthetic route for the production of chemicals and reagents essential to modern society. However, as the intricacies of heterogeneous surface catalysis are slowly being unraveled, minute details of the catalytic environment have been revealed to play outsized roles in the catalytic activity of the surface. The experiments herein further investigate the interplay between surface geometry and the formation oxygen-induced surface structures. Understanding how defects influence surface reactivity is a necessary step in gaining the ability to accurately model heterogeneous catalytic environments. Two different aspects of …

“Buying Time Or Doing Harm?”: Tracing Contestation And Consensus In Debates On Puberty Blockers For Trans Youth, Dana R. Lavergne
“Buying Time Or Doing Harm?”: Tracing Contestation And Consensus In Debates On Puberty Blockers For Trans Youth, Dana R. Lavergne
Dissertations
The use of hormone blockers and other forms of gender affirming medical care for trans youth has emerged as a site of medical and political contestation, with 26 states passing legislation outlawing their use (Movement Advancement Project, 2024). Drawing from a multiple-methods approach, this dissertation examines the ways in which this contestation emerged and has been framed both in political case law and digital spaces, which a specific attunement toward how medical discourse is used to support arguments calling for either the allowance or ban of hormone blockers. This dissertation highlights the ways in which the families of trans youth …
Drawing The Curtain: A Grounded Theory Analysis Of The Conceptualizations Of Culture, Ethnicity And Race In Professional Training Materials For Child Life Certification, Kia Lee Ferrer
Dissertations
Objectives: Certified Child Life Specialists (CCLS) are pediatric healthcare professionals primarily working in hospital settings to support children and families in navigating the developmental challenges of hospitalization, illness, and enduring medical treatment. Recognizing the presence of racial and ethnic health disparities, coupled with the field’s notable lack of diversity (98% White female), the child life workforce is increasingly acknowledging the undeniable evidence that discriminatory behaviors adversely affect a child’s life and well-being. As advances in the social sciences increasingly reveal that discrimination functions as a "socially transmitted disease" in a child's life, I predict that the failure of child life …

Dissertations
In this project, we examined relations between parental talk and children’s affect on children’s STEM talk during an engineering-related activity (i.e., tinkering) in a local children’s museum. We characterized children’s affect in terms of valence (positive or negative) and activation (activating or deactivating), and parental talk was characterized as autonomy supportive or directive, as well as STEM-related or not. Parents and their 4- to 10-year-old children were recruited at the entrance of the Tinkering Lab exhibit at Chicago Children’s Museum. Parents and children were video and audio recorded during the activity. We coded parents’ and children’s behaviors using a time-sampling …
Forgive As We Are Forgiven: Reframing A Trinitarian Model Of Forgiveness In A Post-Genocide Rwanda, Deogratias Mbonyumugenzi
Forgive As We Are Forgiven: Reframing A Trinitarian Model Of Forgiveness In A Post-Genocide Rwanda, Deogratias Mbonyumugenzi
Dissertations
This dissertation seeks to develop a theological model of forgiveness rooted in a relational conception of the Trinity. The central argument of this dissertation is that the model of forgiveness practiced in post-genocide Rwanda and the forgiveness modeled by Jesus, and testified to in the New Testament and developed in the Christian tradition, are good, but not sufficient to address the kind of trauma and human disrepair, as well as the devastation of communities, inflicted by genocide. Rather, a theology of forgiveness modeled on a relational conception of the Trinity and its practical implications for a Trinitarian ecclesiology and anthropology …

Reduced Order Models Of Hydrodynamically Interacting Flapping Wings, Jose Pabon
Reduced Order Models Of Hydrodynamically Interacting Flapping Wings, Jose Pabon
Dissertations
Fish schools exhibit a collective behavior and self-organization that is mediated by hydrodynamic interactions between individual fish. However, the long-time evolution of hydrodynamically interacting collectives is challenging to investigate due to the persistent influence of long-lived vortical structures, and the high-resolution requirements of direct numerical simulation at large Reynolds numbers. Reduced-order models have therefore played an important role in theoretical investigations of collectives of swimming bodies. The main results detailed herein are several new reduced-order models of swimmers that self-propel by flapping, i.e., by executing a prescribed periodic rigid body motion. The models are extensions of a discrete-time dynamical system …

Joint Kinematics And Kinetics During Vertical Jump Landings With Progressively Increasing External Loads, Darcie L. Yount
Dissertations
This study examined sagittal and frontal plane kinematics and kinetics during countermovement jump (CMJ) landings performed with either a traditional barbell (BB) or a hexagonal bar (HEX) across increasing submaximal loads in recreationally active males. Generally, hip and knee flexion angles and joint mean angular velocities decreased as loads increased. Hip extension and knee flexion moments increased as load increased up to 20 kg, at which point these values decreased. Performing the CMJ with the HEX exhibited increased frontal plane stability compared with the BB group. Additionally, the BB group exhibited stiffer landing strategies, with decreased sagittal plane joint angles …
Applying Transcriptomics For Technology Development And Conservation In North American Marine Organisms, Cory Von Eiff
Applying Transcriptomics For Technology Development And Conservation In North American Marine Organisms, Cory Von Eiff
Dissertations
RNA biology is a rapidly expanding field, with many avenues of discovery among marine organisms. In this study, we analyze both mollusks and sawfish. First, we perform an evaluation of sRNA biogenesis pathways throughout Mollusca, with emphasis on the easter oyster, Crassostrea virginica. Understanding these molecules prescribes RNAi-based gene silencing approaches, benefiting genetic investigation and biotechnology. Similar to other animal groups, mollusks have conserved microRNAs (miRNAs), with some shared with ecdysozoans and deuterostomes; however, there is no evidence of an endogenous small interfering RNA (siRNA) pathway. These results suggest that long double-stranded RNA (dsRNA)-based RNAi is not appropriate for gene …
Population Dynamics Of Feral Hemp (Cannabis Sativa L.) Across Illinois, Bryan Scott Foster
Population Dynamics Of Feral Hemp (Cannabis Sativa L.) Across Illinois, Bryan Scott Foster
Dissertations
Hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) is an historically cultivated species re-emerging in modern agriculture due to its utility as a fiber, grain, and cannabinoid crop. While industrial hemp refers to cultivated varieties bred for specific agronomic traits and legally defined by low tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content, feral hemp, often called "ditch weed", represents escaped or naturalized populations descended from historical cultivation. These unmanaged populations persist and spread in disturbed habitats across North America, particularly in the Midwestern U.S., raising ecological and agronomic concerns due to their potential for genetic contamination, invasive behavior, and interactions with native species and agricultural systems. The overall …

Framing The Problem To Meet The Policy Solution: An Embedded Mixed Methods Case Study Of The 2017 Michigan Opioid Laws, Leandra Hawkins Burke
Dissertations
The opioid crisis presents a wicked problem for public administration. Hundreds of thousands of people have died from opioid overdoses in the United States, and countless others have experienced severe opioid-related physical, psychological, and socioeconomic harms. Countering the opioid crisis has been difficult due to interdependencies across different drugs and multiple pathways for abuse and dependence. Many scholars, health providers, and politicians have called for a broad public health approach to combat the opioid crisis, but the full expanse of what that would entail has not yet been realized. What has been demonstrated is that interactions targeting a single aspect …
Immune Modulation Affects Olfactory Glomerular Recovery In Zebrafish, Bonnie E. Ebendick
Immune Modulation Affects Olfactory Glomerular Recovery In Zebrafish, Bonnie E. Ebendick
Dissertations
Adult zebrafish regenerate neurons throughout their lifetime and exhibit rapid recovery from neuronal damage with support from their immune system, making them an excellent model for studying neuroinflammation and brain repair mechanisms. When olfactory sensory neurons are lesioned, their cell death stimulates the immune system by activating microglia and other immune cells in the olfactory bulb, initiating tissue repair and neuronal replacement. This dissertation investigates how the immune system influences recovery from neuronal damage, testing the hypothesis that immune perturbation in zebrafish alters neural recovery.
To investigate the link between immune function and neuronal regeneration, zebrafish received a unilateral lesion …

Mechanistic And Evolutionary Insights Into A Group Of Nicotine And Hydroxynicotine Degrading Flavoenzymes, Zhiyao Zhang
Dissertations
Flavoprotein amine oxidases (FAOs) are key enzymes in various kinds of metabolic pathways, mediating redox reactions via flavin cofactors. While most FAOs function as oxidases that readily reduce oxygen to hydrogen peroxide, a few outliers of the FAO family act as dehydrogenases that suppress the reaction with oxygen. The molecular basis for this divergence in function remains poorly understood.
The work presented in this study investigates the fundamental mechanisms of how flavincontaining enzymes activate or suppress their reaction with different electron acceptors to achieve high turnover rates. The overall body of work is divided into three different sections that (1) …
The Development Of High Throughput Assays For Identification And Evaluation Of Small Molecule Modulators Of The Pri-Microrna-18a—Hnrnp A1 Interaction, Emile N. Van Meter

Dissertations
Therapeutics targeting RNA is a rapidly growing field. While only 1.5% of the human genome encodes genes for protein, over 70% o=f the human genome contains the genes for noncoding RNAs that regulate protein expression and function. Expanding the paradigm of small molecule drug discovery from traditional protein targets to include RNA would broaden the therapeutic landscape and provide new methods to modulate previously undruggable targets. miRNAs (miRs) have been found to be aberrantly expressed in many disease states, including neurodegenerative diseases and cancers making them promising therapeutic targets. The production of functional, mature miRs requires multiple proteins in a …

Emerging Adulthood, Identity Conflict, And Self-Compassion’S Impact On Mental Health Interference Of Collegiate Student-Athletes, Courtney Amber Shields
Dissertations
Prior research identified a strong connection between experiences of being a collegiate student-athlete with mental health-related struggles; however, little research has been conducted into how the competing identities of student and athlete within a heavy identity developmental period (emerging adulthood) might be impacting mental-health interference. The purpose of this quantitative study was to understand how emerging adulthood, student identity, athletic identity, and the conflicting role of student-athlete identity had in mental health interference on training, competition, and willingness to see a sports psychologist within collegiate student-athletes as well as how self-compassion moderated these relationships. The following research questions guided this …
Supporting Cultural Capital In Undergraduate Biology: Instructor Roles And Practices, Lydia Nicole Mayo
Supporting Cultural Capital In Undergraduate Biology: Instructor Roles And Practices, Lydia Nicole Mayo
Dissertations
Undergraduate biology students must navigate complex academic environments that require more than content mastery alone. Increasing evidence shows that students’ attitudes, beliefs, and values—such as motivation, confidence, and a sense of belonging—are critical to student engagement, persistence, and success, especially among first-generation college students and those from historically marginalized backgrounds. Therefore, the purpose of this dissertation is to use cultural capital theory to explore how instructor practices in college biology classrooms support these non-content resources, framed as three forms of cultural capital: aspirational, navigational, and emotional capital for college biology.
To investigate this phenomenon, the dissertation integrates three complementary studies. …

Predictors Of Cyberbullying And Help-Seeking Behaviors In Rural Midwestern Schools: A Multilevel Modeling Analysis, Ashley M. Harrison-Pavlik
Dissertations
Cyberbullying is a significant problem throughout the United States. Many risk factors have been identified for cyberbullying victimization, including experiencing traditional bullying victimization, social media usage, gender, and underrepresented racial/ethnic status, although the results are inconclusive. In response to cyberbullying, youth may choose to engage in or avoid help-seeking behaviors. Individual characteristics such as age, gender, frequency of victimization, race and ethnicity, and student perceptions of school staff can influence whether a youth seeks help. School level variables, including anti-bullying policies and teacher awareness and perceptions of cyberbullying may also impact help-seeking behaviors. However, few studies have empirically assessed their …
Too Big To Fail? Using Microsatellites To Examine The Population Genetics Of Flathead Catfish (Pylodictis Olivaris) In Missouri Impoundments, Aaron Krolow
Dissertations
Flathead Catfish (Pylodictis olivaris) is a popular sportfish managed for recreational and commercial uses. Currently, managers in Missouri have implemented various reservoir-specific bag and length limits for P. olivaris to create sustainable populations of quality-sized individuals available for anglers to capture. In conjunction with field studies to estimate growth rates and size/age distributions, I developed and scored 15 microsatellite markers to estimate the effective population (Ne) and population structure within 10 Missouri reservoirs. I assessed the power of the markers to get acceptably precise estimates of Ne using NEoGen assuming life-history parameters (e.g., age at maturity, longevity and fecundity) estimated …
