Motion Of Viscous Liquid In Rotating Cylinder, Chicheng Wu Dec 1982

Motion Of Viscous Liquid In Rotating Cylinder, Chicheng Wu

Dissertations

A computer model for the withdrawl and buildup of the fluid from the pool bounded on the horizontal, rotating, cylindrical surface has been developed. For a incompressible Newtonian fluid, the model is based upon the modified SOLA-SURF algorithm to solve the finite-difference form of Navier-Stokes equations on primitive variables. A hybird of centered and partial donor cell differencings is applied to the momentum convective flux. In each time cycle, the cell velocity is adjusted by the pressure corrector and iterates to satisfy the equation of continuity. The free surface position is approximated by a surface height function derived from kinematic …

A Petrographic Analysis Of Ceramics From Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests, Arizona: Onsite Or Specialized Manufacture, Elizabeth M. Garrett Dec 1982

A Petrographic Analysis Of Ceramics From Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests, Arizona: Onsite Or Specialized Manufacture, Elizabeth M. Garrett

Dissertations

The primary purpose of this study was to determine if the temper in prehistoric ceramics could be used to reconstruct the patterns of ceramic manufacture in portions of the Apache-Sitgreaves and Coconino National Forests, Arizona. Homogeneity of temper would suggest the use of a restricted number of temper sources indicating that ceramic manufacture occurred in a small number of villages.

A second goal was to analyze the data for diversity of temper both within and among the ceramic wares in the study. The third goal was to compare the mineralogical composition of rock units in the study area and the …

Determination Of Organophosphorus Compounds By Hplc With Post-Column Photochemical Degradation Followed By The Formation Of Reduced Heieropolymolybdate, Stephen R. Priebe Dec 1982

Determination Of Organophosphorus Compounds By Hplc With Post-Column Photochemical Degradation Followed By The Formation Of Reduced Heieropolymolybdate, Stephen R. Priebe

Dissertations

A novel method for the determination of organophosphorus (OP) compounds by HPLC with post-column photochemical and chemical derivatization reactions has been developed. The OP compounds eluted from the column were photochemically degraded to orthophosphate by the use of a 450 W xenon lamp in conjunction with an auxiliary photodegradation reagent. The photodegradation reaction was studied extensively by means of batch irradiations with triethylphosphate as a model compound. The effects of the initial concentrations of triethylphosphate and ammonium peroxydisulfate, and of varying the pH of the reaction medium were determined. A survey of potential interferences was performed. Copper(II) ion was found …

Leadership Styles In Educational Leader Positions: An Investigation Of Some Common Factors In Socialization And Employment Environment Conditions, Gerald E. Lohr

Dissertations

This study examined the leadership styles exhibited by Michigan school superintendents in relation to school district size, birth order, family size, marital status, time served as a teacher before becoming a superintendent, and time served as a superintendent. The subject population consisted of 530 superintendents from which 363 were selected at random. A questionnaire was sent to the random sample with a 65% return. The questionnaire utilized the LBDQ FORM-XII to ascertain the self-perceived leadership styles of these superintendents. The aforementioned other sociological factors were determined by question. No support was found for the existence of any of the relationships …

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of using a systematically planned and presented promotional message on increasing the number of public and private K-12 teachers who use the media services of the REMCs.

The following hypotheses were tested: (1) There will be a difference in the proportion of teachers requesting REMC media services in the experimental and control groups as a result of the use of a systematically designed promotional message. (2) There will be a difference in the mean number of media items requested by users in the experimental and control groups as a result …

The Design, Field Test, And Description Of A Model For Collaborative Long-Range Community Planning, Ozzie D. Parks Dec 1982

The Design, Field Test, And Description Of A Model For Collaborative Long-Range Community Planning, Ozzie D. Parks

Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to design and field test a model for collaborative long-range community planning. A model was designed on the basis of research found in the literature, tested in a community setting, and evaluated regarding its effectiveness.

The problem delineated for the study was the lack of collaborative long-range planning in our society, particularly at the community level. A review of the literature in this field indicated that although long-range planning is considered to be important, it is seldom practiced successfully. The study's response to the problem was to design and field test a model which …

Dissertations

The major focus of this study was the development, use and assessment of instructional materials for teaching leadership awareness to second grade children. The purposes of the study were (1) to determine if there is a need for instructional materials to teach leadership awareness, (2) to determine how teachers and experts would use instructional materials, and (3) to determine the opinions of teachers about the Leadership is Vital to Education (L.I.V.E.) Series developed in this study. The materials in this study were evaluated as an instructional method which could be used to (1) develop in students an awareness of the …

A Comparative Analysis Of The Role Of The Academic Department Chairperson, Stanley Lawrence Coleman Dec 1982

A Comparative Analysis Of The Role Of The Academic Department Chairperson, Stanley Lawrence Coleman

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of collective bargaining and the incumbent's bargaining unit affiliation on the role of the academic department chairperson.

A questionnaire, designed to measure perceptions of the chairperson's role, was administered to a sample of 148 chairpersons from 10 mid-sized public institutions. Using the data contained in the returned questionnaires, comparisons were made between chairpersons' responses--grouped according to their inclusion in or exclusion from their faculties' collective bargaining unit affiliation on three aspects of the chairperson's role. These three aspects, and the data analysis procedures employed to evaluate them, were: (1) Expectations …

Fractionation Of Multicomponent Mixtures By Staged Sequence Cyclic Process And Parametric Pumping, Charles Omotayo Kerobo Sep 1982

Fractionation Of Multicomponent Mixtures By Staged Sequence Cyclic Process And Parametric Pumping, Charles Omotayo Kerobo

Dissertations

The continuous fractionation of multicomponent fluid mixtures has been experimentally and theoretically investigated by staged sequence cyclic process and parametric pumping operating in the direct thermal mode.

A multicolumn staged sequence cyclic process for the separation of solute mixtures was developed. The criteria necessary for the continuous fractionation of a system of n solutes with n+1 columns arranged in a series operated with n+1 cyclic variables is presented. The feasibility for practical application of this process was demonstrated by fractionating the model system, O-xylene-Anisole-n-heptane on silica gel. The separation was modeled by one column staged sequence experimental data and by …

Separation Of Proteins Via Ph Parametric Pumping With Electric Field, Helen Conway Hollein Sep 1982

Separation Of Proteins Via Ph Parametric Pumping With Electric Field, Helen Conway Hollein

Dissertations

A new semi-continuous parametric pumping process for the separation of protein mixtures has been developed, based on cyclic variation of pH and electric field. The model system used for this process consisted of a mixture of human serum albumin and human hemoglobin in contact with CM Sepharose cation exchanger. Experimental results show that the protein separation via the pH parapump with electric field is two to three times greater than the results which are obtained in batch chromatography or via either single-column or multi-column parapumps with cyclic variation of pH and ionic strength.

The separation in the new process depends …
