Biomechanical Assessment Of Ertl And Burgess Transtibial Amputation Techniques, Abbie Elthea Ferris
Biomechanical Assessment Of Ertl And Burgess Transtibial Amputation Techniques, Abbie Elthea Ferris
Dissertations
In this dissertation, a model was developed to predict the inertial properties of the shank and foot of persons with TTA and functional differences between Ertl and Burgess amputees during curb negotiation and the sit-to-stand tasks were evaluated. The developed inertial model was able to predict the shank and foot segment mass, COM location, and MOI more accurately than using the intact limb inertial properties. Used as inputs into inverse dynamics equations, the general model predictions produced joint moments which were also similar to the subject-specific measures. Thus, this model is a better predictor than the current method of using …
School Policy And Practice To Tackle A Public Health Problem: Sudden Cardiac Arrest, Leigh Lynn Mcgown-Kauffman
School Policy And Practice To Tackle A Public Health Problem: Sudden Cardiac Arrest, Leigh Lynn Mcgown-Kauffman
Dissertations
Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is a leading cause of death in the United States. While the medical research has exhaustively documented that immediate response directly impacts survival rates in SCA and that schools could be the best catalyst for creating change by bystanders, there is little to no educational research addressing school policy or practices in regards to cardiac emergencies in schools. The purpose of this dissertation was to identify and describe characteristics of the Colorado schools that offer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training and onsite automated external defibrillators (AED). Two research questions were answered, Of respondents, what are the characteristics …

Predicting Coaching Efficacy In National Collegiate Athletic Association Assistant Coaches: A Social Psychological Analysis Of Coaching Goals, Commitment, And Values, Brett Allen Nichols
Dissertations
Coaching is a complex undertaking and understanding what it takes to be an effective coach is important for coaches and researchers in the field of sport and exercise science. Horn’s (2008) heuristic model of coaching effectiveness organizes and summarizes the previously established relationships among predictors and outcomes of effective coaching. The purpose of this study was to examine the heart of Horn’s model, specifically examining coaching goals, coaching commitment, and coaching values with the five dimensions of coaching efficacy (Feltz et al., 1999; Myers et al., 2008). Using intercollegiate assistant coaches (N=740) this study demonstrated initial reliability and factorial validity …

Sleep Disordered Breathing And Pregnancy: Prevalence And Outcomes At Delivery, Ryan Lyle Nations
Sleep Disordered Breathing And Pregnancy: Prevalence And Outcomes At Delivery, Ryan Lyle Nations
Dissertations
Introduction
Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB) during pregnancy is associated with maternal and neonatal morbidity, and in-hospital mortality. A recent prevalence study using the Nationwide Inpatient Sample reported an obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) prevalence of 7.3 per 10,000 in 2013, a rate of 24% per year over the last decade. The rise in prevalence mirrors the rise in obesity. Military Treatment Facilities (MTF) have seen an increase in obesity and related co-morbidities with an unknown prevalence of SDB. Most studies have been conducted in high-risk populations; the general prevalence of SDB and its association with adverse pregnancy outcomes in a military …

Attraction And Risk In Urban Bird Habitats, Megan E. Litwhiler
Attraction And Risk In Urban Bird Habitats, Megan E. Litwhiler
Dissertations
Urban expansion is an increasing threat to native bird populations. Consequently, maintaining and developing safe urban habitat space is necessary for conservation. Birds living in, or migrating through, urban areas utilize a variety of managed green-spaces such as parks, gardens, college campuses, and cemeteries. In addition to managed habitats, birds may use abandoned property that has been reclaimed by vegetation and associated spontaneous, biological communities. Such urban habitats may provide valuable resources for birds and other wildlife; however, these sites often contain high densities of non-native plants and can be polluted, potentially imparting a greater risk than benefit to the …

Philosopher's Stone: The Faustian Geist Of Development, Salikyu Sangtam
Dissertations
The present study juxtaposes scientific rationality with polyphonic rationality in respect to societal development. This is done to illuminate how scientific rationality provides a narrow and truncated view of development. In order to explicate the exclusion of polyphonic rationalities/knowledges in favor of scientific rationality, several development scholarships are examined along with an episode of developmental scheme and two episodes of development programs. This is done to expound (note: ‘→’ = influences) how scientific rationality → scholarships → organizational/institutional schemes, such as the MDGs → actual applications of development schemes, such as transmigration and compulsory villagization. The present inquest, …

A Mixed-Methods Exploration Of Employee Attitudes, Awareness, And Satisfaction With Regard To The University Employee Wellness Program, Linda Ann Walters
Dissertations
While there was an abundant amount of research supporting the need for and benefits of a workplace health program (WHP), little empirical research existed regarding WHPs in a university setting (Watts, 1992). Compared to other WHP settings, the university setting is unique in that the employee population consists of both faculty and staff, with various work schedules, job responsibilities, and demographics. Universities also provide a unique setting for WHPs due to their access to various internal resources, such as employees with expert knowledge, campus food services, on-site facilities, and students studying health and wellness disciplines (RAND Corporation, 2013). As reported …

Identifying The Molecular Mechanisms Of Early Cachexia Using Whole Transcriptome Sequencing In Muscle And Fat Biopsies From Cancer Patients, Amal Hussain Al Hadad
Dissertations
Cancer cachexia is responsible for one third of cancer–related deaths and contributes to the death of many others. More than 80% of cancer patients are cachectic towards the end of life. Despite intensive research, the mechanisms of cancer cachexia are still poorly understood. It is our hypothesis that identification of early changes in gene expression in cachexia will lead to an improved understanding of the mechanism that trigger this important problem in cancer patients. Thus, to shed light on the mechanisms involved in the major cachexia target tissues, we investigated the entire transcriptome in muscle and fat to identify altered …
