The Continuous Non-Equilibrium Parametric Pump: A Theoretical And Experimental Study, John Lawrence Rak May 1978

The Continuous Non-Equilibrium Parametric Pump: A Theoretical And Experimental Study, John Lawrence Rak

Dissertations

A continuous parametric pump in which the feed and product streams flow steadily both in upflow and downflow (hot and cold temperatures, respectively) is examined theoretically and experimentally. The model system is Sodium Chloride-Water-Bio Rad AG11A8 Ion Retardation Resin, a physical system characterized by relatively slow interphase mass transfer rates. For short half-cycle times, where interphase equilibrium is not approached, separation of the salt from water is found to be enhanced by longer half-cycle times, smaller reservoir displacements, and longer adsorbant columns. In most cases, separation improves with increasing number of cycles. However, steadily degrading separation is found to exist …

The Development And Validation Of A Vocational Interest Survey Instrument With Audio-Visual Format, Paul Gene Elliott Jan 1978

The Development And Validation Of A Vocational Interest Survey Instrument With Audio-Visual Format, Paul Gene Elliott

Dissertations

Problem. Many present day vocational interest surveys rely exclusively on printed reading materials to assess youngsters' vocational interest . The use of printed reading materials alone may not best serve the youngsters who are unable to read or who learn best through a different kind of learning structure . There needs to be a variety of valid assessing techniques that explore the youngster's vocational interest. These techniques should not raise side issues of academic skills, but provide a pure measure of interest . The purpose of this research was to develop and test an instrument using photographs as choice stimulants …

Psycho-Social Factors Influencing The Learning Of A Second Or A Foreign Language, Dora Mae Rodgers Jan 1978

Psycho-Social Factors Influencing The Learning Of A Second Or A Foreign Language, Dora Mae Rodgers

Dissertations

Problem. With bilingualism now a world-wide phenomenon, language has become a powerful force for unity both at home and abroad. This, along with increased immigration, has emphasized the need for the study of second or foreign languages. In the United States, bilingualism and the learning of English as a second language are outstanding educational problems. Psycho-socio-cultural factors, attitudes, and motivation affect second language learning perhaps even more than age, aptitude, or methodology. The second language teacher must be aware of the existence and importance of these factors and their inherent problems. This study sought to classify and rate the importance …

A Model For The Development Of Educational Specifications For Small Schools, Raymond K. Wilkinson Jan 1978

A Model For The Development Of Educational Specifications For Small Schools, Raymond K. Wilkinson

Dissertations

Problem. The process of carefully planning school facilities to accomodate and support a particular educational program is but a recent addition to educational theory and practice. In fact, the use of educational specifications, in which educators describe how a school will operate, and thus guide the architects in their process of design, has developed within the same general period of time during which schools have grown in size and complexity (Callahan, 1962; Roaden, 1963). As a result, the process of planning has largely been related to big schools, and the distinctive needs of small schools have been neglected. The …

Developing A Model For Organizing And Administering Instructional Media Centers For Teacher Education In Iran, Mohammed Hossein Morovati

Dissertations

Problem. The purpose of this study was to develop a model for organizing, administering, and providing physical facilities for instructional media centers for institutions of teacher education in Iran. The major problem is that the institutions for teacher education in Iran currently do not have guidelines for management of instructional media centers. However, it is a recognized fact that in order to provide quality training for teachers of tomorrow such provisions must be made.

Procedure. This is a descriptive study covering the philosophy, the role, major administrative structures, and needed personnel for institutional media centers in Iran's educational institutions. In …

A Study Of The Attitudes Of The Non-Science Major Toward Science And Its Importance In Curriculum Design, Larry J. Fairbanks Dec 1977

A Study Of The Attitudes Of The Non-Science Major Toward Science And Its Importance In Curriculum Design, Larry J. Fairbanks

Dissertations

The purposes of this study were to: (1) Identify and explore the non-science majors' attitudes toward science; (2) Use the results of the investigation to design a course to be used by instructors of Earth and Space Science.

Two major instruments were developed to collect data for the study. The first was an Attitude Inventory and the second was a Course Content Inventory. A major goal of the Attitude Inventory was to collect data with which to develop an Attitude Index which could be used to predict those non-science majors who have some "negative" attitudes toward science. The course design …

A Model For Initiating Change In Large Social Systems, Richard E. Ault Dec 1977

A Model For Initiating Change In Large Social Systems, Richard E. Ault

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to develop a model for introducing change in large social systems. The model was based on (1) a review of existing models, and (2) the analysis of a participant-observer study of an attempt at intraducing large system change. Organization Development was the focal change modality examined. It was intended that the model thus developed would be of utility to the practicing change agent in whatever field--education, social work, community development, government, unions, business, or industry.

From the review of existing models and related literature, it was concluded that a useful model for practitioners would …
