Measuring Student Growth In K–12 Schools Using Item Response Theory Within Structural Equation Models, Kenneth Lee Thompson Aug 2015

Measuring Student Growth In K–12 Schools Using Item Response Theory Within Structural Equation Models, Kenneth Lee Thompson

Dissertations

The use of test-based accountability has expanded beyond measurements of school effectiveness to include measurements of teacher effectiveness. However, whereas the use of test-based accountability has expanded, the understanding of the statistical methodologies used in accountability systems has not kept pace. Currently, Student Growth Percentiles and value-added modeling are the most prevalent methodologies for estimating annual student growth. Each of these methodologies is regression-based and relies on scale scores from standardized assessments. Given the prevalence of Item Response Theory in statewide assessment programs, these scale scores often result from Item Response Theory scaling practices. Grounded in earlier work of Brockman …

Understanding Mechanistic Details Of Neuroinflammatory Pathways Stimulated By The Alzheimer's Disease Amyloid-Beta Protein, Shana Usery Jul 2015

Understanding Mechanistic Details Of Neuroinflammatory Pathways Stimulated By The Alzheimer's Disease Amyloid-Beta Protein, Shana Usery

Dissertations

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is characterized by neuroinflammation. Senile plaques composed of aggregated amyloid-β protein (Aβ) are found in AD patients’ brains. The Aβ is formed by the proteolytic cleavage of the amyloid precursor protein (APP) resulting in Aβ fragments that are 39-42 amino acids in length. The two most common peptides are Aβ(1-40) and Aβ(1-42), which differ by two amino acids, isoleucine and alanine. Within the brain of AD patients, Aβ monomer self-assembles to form several aggregate morphologies, including oligomers, protofibrils, and fibrils. Activated microglial cells and associated secreted proinflammatory cytokines surround these plaques producing a localized inflammatory environment in …

Regulation Of Glial Cell Line-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (Gdnf) Production In Voluntary And Involuntary Muscle, John-Mary Vianney

Dissertations

Glia cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) is a survival factor for subpopulations of neurons, including somatic and autonomic motor neurons. These neurons depend, in part, on GDNF that is synthesized and secreted by their target tissues. It has been shown that a number of tissues in the periphery express GDNF and these target tissues differ in their composition, function, and in the case of different muscle cell types, their contractile characteristics. Whether the processes regulating GDNF production in these different tissues is similar or different is poorly understood. The broad goal of this study is to examine factors that normally …

Methods For Two-Sample Comparisons From Censored Time-To-Event Data, Nubyra Ahmed May 2015

Methods For Two-Sample Comparisons From Censored Time-To-Event Data, Nubyra Ahmed

Dissertations

In the analysis of censored survival data, it is frequently of interest to determine the efficacy of a treatment or new method over a control or existing method. For this purpose, one may report estimates of the two survival functions or, more specifically, their difference, accompanied by simultaneous confidence bands (SCBs). Alternatively, or in addition, one may conduct hypothesis testing for the difference of the two survival functions.

The first project exploits two bootstrap methods to develop new Wald-type SCBs for the difference of survival functions. The censored data bootstrap is employed to obtain nonparametric SCBs for the difference of …
