Automation Of Crack Detection And Quantification In Civil Infrastructure Facilities Using Deep Learning Techniques, Luqman Ali
Dissertations
Cracks are the earliest signs of structural deterioration that reduce the lifespan and reliability of structures and can lead to severe damage. Assessment and monitoring of the facilities are required for lifetime maintenance and failure prediction. Structure condition information can be obtained manually, i.e., through subjective visual inspection and evaluation by human experts. Manual inspection techniques are labor-intensive, time-consuming, and inspector-dependent, i.e., vulnerable to the inspector’s perceptiveness. Automatic crack detection is crucial at the earliest stage to avoid further structure degradation and allow fast intervention. Deep Learning algorithms have become more popular in crack detection systems in recent years. However, …

Restricted Powers, Special-Purpose Districts, And Path Dependence: Economic Graveyards In Downstate Illinois, Bethany Behrhorst
Dissertations
Property taxation in the United States is a critical issue warranting examination because it involves the directed distribution of government costs and benefits for citizens. The central question exists: Why are Illinois’ property taxes so high? Path dependence was explored as a theory to explain Illinois’ property tax reliance issues, asserting that as local governmental units in the State face budget limitations, they find alternative revenue streams. For example, restricted powers could lead to the development of quasi-governments, which are known as special-purpose districts. In such cases, once general-purpose municipalities charter a course by creating special-purpose districts, it is difficult …

With the shifting dynamics within higher education, there is a stronger reliance and need for financial support in order to aid the institution’s growth and financial health. One particular segment of their donor base that institutions will need to cultivate in order to respond to these dynamics is among their alumni. Simultaneously, while many institutions have made significant advancements for resources, services, and inclusion of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and/or queer/questioning (LGBTQ+) people, barriers to their academic, economic, social, and mental health still exist. Using student involvement, queer identity development, and identity-based alumni engagement theoretical models as guides, this study …
The Ethics Of Advance Care Planning, Ciaran Folliard Rhys
The Ethics Of Advance Care Planning, Ciaran Folliard Rhys
Dissertations
The COVID-19 pandemic subjected millions of Americans to alienated deaths in institutional settings. Given that the default response to health crises is to go to the Emergency Department, isolation protocol limited the care and support ill and potentially dying people could receive at the bedside. Crisis standards of care also cut off meaningful discussions of end of life care preferences. Communication barriers regarding end of life care existed well before the pandemic, however. This dissertation proposes a new approach to the concept of Advance Care Planning (ACP), or the process of deciding what kinds of care one would prefer in …

Examining The Bidirectional Associations Between Parenting And Adolescent Coping In The Context Of Exposure To Community Violence, Jenny Phan
Dissertations
Coping refers to all the strategies and processes that an individual uses to eliminate, reduce or tolerate stress (Lazarus & Folkman, 1984; Rosario et al., 2003). Within the general coping literature, research has observed that use of approach-oriented coping strategies is associated with positive psychosocial outcomes, and avoidant-oriented coping strategies is associated with negative psychosocial outcomes (e.g., Compas et al., 2001; Wadsworth & Compas, 2002). However, most of these studies have focused exclusively or predominantly on middle-class White participants (e.g., Compas et al., 2001; Wadsworth & Compas, 2002) which may limit the generalizability of these findings to other groups. Further, …
