This dissertation focused on exploring the subjective complaints of cognition problems among the United Arab Emirates (UAE) population using a validated and adapted Arabic Emirati language version of a subjective scale that assesses cognition problems, -The Subjective Scale to Investigate Cognition - Emirates (SSTIC-E). Cognitive complaints and lack of cognitive insights are not specific to schizophrenia. It could be related to depression, mild cognitive impairment, dementia, or Alzheimer's. Hence, scales in this field can be very useful to assess and collect data for populations at risk of developing cognitive decline. The study aims to translate, adapt, and validate the SSTICS …
Stressors, Academic Performance, And Learned Resourcefulness In Baccalaureate Nursing Students, Anne-Marie Goff
Stressors, Academic Performance, And Learned Resourcefulness In Baccalaureate Nursing Students, Anne-Marie Goff
Dissertations
Despite extensive research establishing that stress affects problem-solving ability and coping, and leads to decreased learning, academic performance, and retention in nursing students, a paucity of research explores specific factors that could enhance these learning processes and outcomes. This explanatory correlational study examines the mediating effect of learned resourcefulness, the ability to regulate emotions and cognitions, on the relationships of stressors—both personal and academic—to academic performance in baccalaureate nursing students. Gadzella's Student-life Stress Inventory (SSI) and Rosenbaum's Self-Control Scale (SCS), a measure of learned resourcefulness, were administered to 53 junior level baccalaureate nursing students (92.5% female; 84.9% Caucasian; 9.4% African-American …
Job Stress, Mentoring, Psychological Empowerment, And Job Satisfaction Among Nursing Faculty, Catherine Chung
Job Stress, Mentoring, Psychological Empowerment, And Job Satisfaction Among Nursing Faculty, Catherine Chung
Dissertations
The National League for Nursing (NLN) endorses mentoring throughout the nursing faculty career trajectory as the method to recruit nurses into academia and improve retention of nursing faculty within the academy (NLN, 2006). One way mentoring assists faculty is by easing socialization to the culture of the employing institution and decreasing faculty stress (Lewallen, Crane, Letvak, Jones, & Hu, 2003). Mentoring can also be a facilitating factor of an individual's psychological empowerment. Academia is an environment able to foster psychological empowerment, a state in which faculty may be self-directed, highly productive, confident, and find a meaningful connection to their work …

From Doubt To Degree: The Retention Of African-American Mother-Scholars, Tamala Y. Stallings
Dissertations
According to college student demographic data, the majority of undergraduate students are nontraditional. However a smaller portion of educational resources are allocated to retain nontraditional college students in comparison to traditional college students. An even smaller portion of resources are allocated for the retention of sub- populations of nontraditional college students, such as Mother-Scholars. Therefore it is imperative for postsecondary institutions to understand the needs of sub-populations like Mother-Scholars and adequately apportion resources to increase their retention.
Upon matriculation, Mother-Scholars encounter systemic barriers within their institutions that impede their college persistence. Furthermore, because of their intersectionality, Mother-Scholars have college experiences …

"Operation Motivation" - Samuel Shepard Jr., Nicalee Stephens-Wilson
"Operation Motivation" - Samuel Shepard Jr., Nicalee Stephens-Wilson
Dissertations
African-American students have often faced systemic oppression and racial inequities as learners in the United States. Public schools in their communities lacked the resources to offer full access to a fair and equitable education. For years, human rights activists fought for radical changes in public schools. Finally, in 1954, the U. S. Supreme Court in Brown v. Board of Education ruled segregation in public schools unconstitutional. The Brown decision did not have the power to eliminate the long-established segregation practices. Nor did it grant access to educational equity for children of color. Dr. Samuel Shepard Jr. began his work in …
New Methods For Stereoselective Glycosylation In Application To Significant Biomedical Targets, Melanie L. Shadrick
New Methods For Stereoselective Glycosylation In Application To Significant Biomedical Targets, Melanie L. Shadrick
Dissertations
Glycosyl halides have been utilized for glycosylation reactions since the early studies by Arthur Michael, nearing the end of the 19th century. Koenigs and Knorr then utilized silver salts to activate glycosyl bromides and chlorides to create synthetic glycosides. Many efforts to improve the outcome of reactions with glycosyl halides have emerged. The key emphasis has traditionally been placed on reaction rates, product yields, and stereocontrol. Recently, our lab reported that silver(I) oxide-mediated Koenigs-Knorr glycosylation reaction can be dramatically accelerated in the presence of catalytic acid additives. Methods to improve glycosylation was explored using mannosyl and glucosyl bromides. However, …

The Public Muse In Congress: The Punctuation Of American Federal Arts Policy, Elizabeth Deichmann
Dissertations
In 1989, American federal arts policy changed suddenly and drastically when the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) gained unprecedented attention in Congress for controversial grant awards that supported two visual artists. Prior to this, federal arts policy was an insulated subsystem run by experts applying high art aesthetic standards to grantmaking. Informed by punctuated-equilibrium theory (PET), this investigation of congressional rhetoric shows that Republican policy entrepreneurs during this time effectively set a new, more negative tone about federal arts policy by harnessing conservative culture wars messages. The change in tone preceded federal arts policy’s arrival on the broader congressional …
