Development Of Novel Nanocarbon Based Materials And Membranes With Enhanced Biocidal Capabilities For Clean Water Generation, Indrani Gupta
Development Of Novel Nanocarbon Based Materials And Membranes With Enhanced Biocidal Capabilities For Clean Water Generation, Indrani Gupta
Dissertations
Water scarcity is one of the major challenges facing humanity today, driven by population growth, economic development, and dietary shifts towards more water-intensive animal products. To address this issue, efficient water resource management and recycling of wastewater are essential. However, around 80% of wastewater globally is discharged into water bodies without treatment, posing a risk to ecosystems and human health. Pathogens, or harmful microorganisms, are a primary cause of water impairment and the transmission of waterborne diseases, leading to increased mortality rates. Traditional methods of treating pathogens involve the use of radiation or chemical disinfectants. Nonetheless, these methods have drawbacks, …
Large-Scale And Meso-Scale Ion Dynamics Of The Near-Earth Space Environment, Matthew Cooper
Large-Scale And Meso-Scale Ion Dynamics Of The Near-Earth Space Environment, Matthew Cooper
Dissertations
The mechanisms whereby low energy (order of lOs to 100s of eV) solar wind and ionosphere sourced particles are accelerated to high energy (order of 10s to 100s keV) in the Earth's magnetosphere are a trending research topic due to impacts on radiation belt populations, coupling to the high-latitude ionosphere, and energy budgets for collision-less plasma in dipole fields. Ultra-low frequency (ULF, order of 1-100 mHz) Alfven waves observed in the nightside inner magnetosphere during geomagnetic activity are one such acceleration mechanism. Several source processes for these waves, including the micro-scale drift-mirror mode, have been previously suggested but observational evidence …
Domain Decomposition Methods For Linear And Non-Linear Elliptic Problems, Tadanaga Takahashi
Domain Decomposition Methods For Linear And Non-Linear Elliptic Problems, Tadanaga Takahashi
Dissertations
The primary purpose of this dissertation is to expand upon the circle of domain decomposition methods (DDM) which are algorithms that reformulate a boundary value problem in terms of multiple localized problems on subdomains. The first project involves expanding upon DDMs in a relatively mature field: the Helmholtz equation for wave scattering applications. The proposed method is an adaptation of a continuous cross-point Finite Element Non-overlapping DDM algorithm. The usual unbounded computational domain is truncated and then the near-field wave pattern is solved with a parallelized finite element method. Several improvements over the standard transmission operator are discussed in this …
Development Of Novel Hybrid Structures For Fast Dissolution Of Hydrophobic Drugs, Mohammad Saiful Islam
Development Of Novel Hybrid Structures For Fast Dissolution Of Hydrophobic Drugs, Mohammad Saiful Islam
Dissertations
Nanomaterials have proven to be highly effective in the design and development of biomedicine. Complementary nanostructured hybrid particles show great promise in drug delivery applications. By improving functionalization, the physicochemical properties of the particles can be enhanced resulting in a high surface area, tunable hydrophilicity and porosity. These characteristics can provide a suitable environment for drug encapsulation, biocompatibility, high drug loading, and customizable release capabilities.
The formulation of drugs with poor water solubility faces multiple challenges, such as insufficient dissolution and inconsistent therapeutic efficacy, particularly when administered orally over an extended period. To overcome these challenges, some of the beneficial …
A Piezoelectric Gelatin Scaffold For Schwann Cell Induced Spinal Cord Repair, Scott Stratton
A Piezoelectric Gelatin Scaffold For Schwann Cell Induced Spinal Cord Repair, Scott Stratton
Dissertations
Spinal cord injury (SCI) results in axonal damage and consequently, functional loss for which there is no effective treatment at the present time. Axon growth across the injured site is needed to restore disruptive axonal circuitry, which is needed for recovery of lost function, but endogenous axon growth is poor. A Schwann cell (SC) transplant has shown promise in promoting axon growth in the injured spinal cord. Similarly, it has been shown that axons grow into biomaterial conduits especially when they are engineered to provide physical and biochemical growth-promoting cues. While both approaches are promising, their overall effect on axon …

Mixed Method - How Do Medical-Surgical Nurses Provide Compassionate Care To Patients In The Face Of Adversity?, Diane D. Kret
Dissertations
Compassion is a quality that is the very essence of nursing. Nurses, as professionals, seek to alleviate suffering. It is through providing compassionate, connected care that nurses can relieve their patients' suffering. In the midst of adversity such as taking care of ill and dying patients, especially in the Covid-19 pandemic, nurses have been challenged with providing compassionate care despite the increased toll that this may have on them. There is evidence that exposure to these events can cause compassion fatigue and burnout. When these signs of compassion fatigue or compassion burnout are not addressed, nurses have decreased job satisfaction …

The Journeys Of Women In Local Elected Office: From Community Engagement To Making Meaningful Contributions, Andrea Marr
The Journeys Of Women In Local Elected Office: From Community Engagement To Making Meaningful Contributions, Andrea Marr
Dissertations
Women remain underrepresented across every level of elected office in the United States. More than 30 years after the supposed “Year of the Woman,” women hold less than 30% of the elected positions in local, state, and federal office. In the past, researchers attributed the paucity of women in office to structural barriers, including sexism in the electorate, fundraising difficulties, and discrimination by party gate keepers. A growing body of research, however, attributes the dearth of female politicians to a lack of political ambition among women and to gender socialization that prevents women from seeing themselves as political leaders.

Humanitarian nongovernmental organizations (HNGOs) face a moment of reckoning brought on by decades of operational complexity and conceptual tensions between self-espoused values and external pressures as social change movements like #MeToo and Black Lives Matter demand organizational accountability. Humanitarian aid is being questioned systematically as most HNGOs continue reconciling with their colonialist origin stories from the Global North. Alongside a shrinking British foreign aid budget, and mounting pressures for proving value for money, HNGOs face a record number of natural disasters, energy crises, armed conflicts, and other major emergencies to respond to across the globe.
As the British aid sector …
The Development Of The Holistic Pastoral Wellbeing Assessment: A Mixed Methods Study, Timothy Captain
The Development Of The Holistic Pastoral Wellbeing Assessment: A Mixed Methods Study, Timothy Captain
Dissertations
Some pastors are clearly in crisis. Research has indicated that clergy struggle to cope with the stressors of their profession. While pastoral work is overtly spiritual in nature, day-to-day tasks include interactions with God, themselves, congregants, and the world at large. Without multi-dimensional tools to consider their wellbeing, specifically assessments that reflect their worldview and role, pastors may remain unaware of dangerously low levels of wellbeing until they reach a place of crisis. Therefore, in this mixed methods study, the Holistic Pastoral Wellbeing Assessment (HPWA) was developed and tested to offer a validated, useful tool for pastors and those who …
