Low Power State To Avoid Battery Damage Due To Excessive Drain, Daisuke Nojiri Oct 2019

Low Power State To Avoid Battery Damage Due To Excessive Drain, Daisuke Nojiri

Defensive Publications Series

Rechargeable batteries in portable devices can be damaged permanently and become unrecoverable when completely drained. Such a situation arises when a device is left idle for a long period of time. This disclosure describes techniques to prevent battery damage during extended idle periods. When an idle state is detected, a low power state is selected for the computing device based upon a battery state of charge. The selection of the state is based on a comparison of the measured remaining battery capacity with a predetermined threshold. If the battery state of charge meets the threshold, the computing device is placed …

Adaptive Biasing Of Radio-Frequency Power Amplifiers, Ming Sun, Fei He, Mike Kincaid Oct 2019

Adaptive Biasing Of Radio-Frequency Power Amplifiers, Ming Sun, Fei He, Mike Kincaid

Defensive Publications Series

Radio-frequency (RF) power amplifiers (PA) have a nearly linear response only at small input amplitudes, with their outputs gradually saturating as input amplitudes increase. This slightly sub-linear transfer characteristic gives rise to out-of-band emissions, which can potentially interfere with other users of the RF spectrum. Regulatory requirements place limits on the maximum out-of-band emissions by a device. In turn, these translate to operating the PA at a highly linear region, e.g., at low input amplitudes compared to the dynamic range of the PA. However, low input amplitudes are associated with low PA efficiencies. This disclosure describes techniques to adapt the …

Measuring Stereo Camera Alignment Using Depth Map Smoothness, Edward T. Chang

Defensive Publications Series

This publication describes systems and techniques directed to measuring stereo camera alignment using depth map smoothness as a quality metric for the stereo calibration process. The quality of the depth map generated by the stereo cameras, as measured by smoothness, provides feedback indicative of a need (or not) for stereo calibration to account for camera misalignment.
